Air Duct Cleaning
I found a thread from 2015 that discussed recommendations for air duct cleaning services with specific mentions of Breath EZ & Wilson cleaning. Does anyone have more recent experiences?
First overwhelming recommendation is to get a small camera, put it in the ducts, and find out whether you really need it or not. It's a service very often oversold.
Does anyone have a recommendation on who in the area does the dryer vent cleaning?
TownFriend, personally, I find it's cheaper to throw out the old vent duct and put on a new one. It's only about $10 for an 8 foot section of it at Home Depot. I do it every 5 years.
Above all does a number of units in our neighborhood

ianimal, some people have a long duct that runs through walls and/or ceilings, and they can't easily just replace it.
Also, I don't know which kind you use, but those cheap, flexible ducts (the ones that feel like a big spring covered with mylar foil) are not as safe as solid-metal ducts. Those cheap ducts can still burn, they are more likely to catch lint, and they are more likely to tear, which can lead to exhaust leaking inside the home.
Homedepot sells a dryer vent cleaning tool you hook up to a drill. Works great and only like $25
Hey, JW... yeah I didn't really think of other setups. I suppose if you have a 2nd floor laundry room in the center of the house, it would be much more difficult to swap out the vent duct than when it's along the basement wall with the exhaust opening directly above it.
The duct I use isn't the plastic lined one, but it isn't rigid like a wood stove flue either. It's all metal, but segmented so that it's flexible.
I know exactly the type you mean, ianimal--I've used them myself, in a few houses.
And yes, my last place was a condo, with the laundry room in the middle of the upper floor. The duct ran a long way, through the trussed floor below, to get to the outside. The only practical way to clean it was with the type of thing Enjoy mentioned, above--a drill driven brush connected to flexible rods. It was a real hassle--but damn, it was nice having a laundry room right outside the bedrooms!
@luvlife. How did you know that sears did a "great job"? Did you look inside the ducts after they were done? What were they like before they came?
I've got to agree w/ not sack regarding Sears. The first time I had my vents cleaned, I used Sears and the guy basically replaced the section of vent pipe in the laundry closet and that was it - he did nothing with the actual metal "flu" pup up to the roof and was gone in about 5 minutes. The next time, I had BreathEZ come and do the cleaning and he cleaned EVERYTHING - was there for about 30 minutes, cleaned the flex pipe from dryer to vent pipe, then climbed into the "attic" space and cleaned the length of the solid pipe to the roof. The guy was great and cost almost a third of what Sears charged for the same thing.
Actually NS I watched them do it and saw all the built up dust flying out. I bought the place and don't think the air ducts were ever cleaned you could see the build up in the vents that's why I had it done! So yes, IMO Sears did a great job! I'm not talking about dryer vents rather as OP asked "air duct" cleaning.
@luvlife,
Glad you had a good experience w/ Sears, then. I didn't think I had a bad experience until I saw what BreathEZ did in comparison, and for much less.
Is this the Breathe EZ that everyone is referring to?

Yes. It's is the right one. I have used them many times. Always a great job, reasonable prices.
Change the air filter on your furnace blower regularly and you'll never need to clean your ducts.
To be honest, duct cleaning is a lot like having your muffler bearing changed.
That's what I've always heard from the "old hands"... if you keep your filters clean/replaced, the ducts don't get dirty. And if your ducts ARE dirty, so is your COIL and that can actually cause damage to your system...
I had Breathe E-Z out today and I highly recommend them!
Professional and did a great job!
I change my filter each month and the ducts still needed to be cleaned
Summer- Did they clean in the furnace as well? The coil for instance if you have central air.
Greg
He made an opening in the duct near the furnace...attached a huge hose...then went to each register checked inside with a light and blew towards the vacuum...before he did the returns he went into basement cleaned out what was blown down...did the returns...cleaned out again
If the person saying your air ducts needed to be cleaned is the person that just cleaned them, I’m not sure that is a trustworthy comment
True Big Bobby I saw myself with a flashlight before and after....I could hear debris being removed by the vacuum. Plus there was some debris (start of a nest) in one of the vents ....same vent I smelled something burning last week and had my heating person out for
Who knows...I will have them done every 5 years to be sure
Hello. I am looking for specialists who will disinfect my ventilation.
Chris from this company did a great job cleaning the ducts but I don't know if he does disinfecting.
