Scam from 917 area code

I just want to inform everyone that I received a call from a 917 area code stating they were from the US Treasury about my taxes. I knew when they left a message on my phone that it was a scam, but wanted to find out more.
I don't know if there is anyone to contact to let them know of the scam or not.

I just received the same call...the IRS will never call, text or e-mail but only contact someone in written form if there is an issue.

Notify the police. They are actively prosecuting these scammers whenever possible. If you have a phone number to call back they may be very interested in seeing how far they can go.

If they claim to be from Treasury

If you have received a call or an email that you suspect is fraudulent, report a description of the communication to:

OIGCounsel@oig.treas.gov, or 202-927-0650.

If they claim to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or it is about taxes

If the call or email contained claims related to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or taxes, you must report it to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at:

https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/contact_report_scam.shtml or
1-800-366-4484.

When reporting a suspicious call, telephone carriers require that you provide the exact date and time that you received the call(s) and the geographic location and time zone where you received the call. For example: “I received a suspicious call from telephone number XXX-XXX-XXX to my home phone in Tallahassee, Florida (Eastern Time Zone) on October 23, 2015 at 9:23AM claiming that there is a legal action against me from the Treasury Department of Legal Affairs.”

I'll say the robo-calls are relentless. We get them from everywhere

NYC, NY
Denver, CO
San Antonio, TX
Congressman Scott Garrett (he's probably the biggest offender, the douchebag)

@Andy Loigu, you're welcome. I can't believe they left a message for me to call back. I knew while talking to them it was, because I never use my nickname on my taxes.
So many of us know when they are being scammed, but the elderly are always the victims and I feel horrible when it happens.

Got the 917 call to. Listening to it on my answering machine. They never hung up, the message was going on it's 3rd recording when I unplugged the machine. He left his name and number. I figured I was going to jot it down, but when I played it back it wasn't on there, probably because I unplugged it. Darn.

These calls need to be reported

This is not the first time we've had a thread on these calls, they're prolific. That website JrzyGirl88 posted is a quick and easy way to report it. They get thousands of reports a day and have been trying to go after these people for several years. The calls are from outside the US so it takes a long time to get any results. And they've found law enforcement at the other end is sometimes unresponsive, or even complicit.

They even have called a Treasury Department Inspector...

I've gotten the calls - once or twice the fake number generator must have failed and the caller ID actually showed the international number, but they didn't leave a message so I didn't think I could report it.

We got one today, 917 area code, the caller had a foreign accent and said his name was Dennis Quaid! Sounded like he was in a closet. I'm gonna call the number tomorrow from work and mess with them a little!

It doesn't become a scam until you fork over money. NEVER give money to an unknown source/phone caller

On the message I got it sounded like he said his name was Dennis Quaid.

Anyone with Comcast (Xfinity) triple play can block up to 25 numbers by pressing star 60 and following the instructions . You can also block all anonymous calls . I hardly get any nuisance calls anymore since activating these functions . There are also landline phones sold that allow up to 250 numbers blocked , if you have caller ID of course .

My fear is that an elderly person may fall into this trap! Please pass the word along.

I just got the call from Dennis Gray with the callback number of 706-844-1784, the same as auntiel's. They must be working through our exchange.

What terrible people.

I got the call from 706-844-1784 last night too, let it go to voicemail and he left that as the call back number as well.

Wendy, more likely it was Randy Quaid... he definitely could use the money, lol. Was it a number in Vermont?

I also got the call last night. I listened to it and he doesn't even speak correct English. I don't mind the Indian accent, but most folks from India speak very well with just their accent. This guy is a joke.

Yes, Lynnada, that is exactly what it sounded like!

I loved how my case was going to go to magistrate, or state court, or federal circuit court, or the Internal Revenue Service. Yeah, right.
