Adult Children
I am asking for some opinions, for those of you that have adult children.
How do you refer to them when speaking to others. I spent the day with my adult child, or is it politically correct to say I was with my kids, or I was with my adult kids, if not using the term family . Any thoughts ?
Thanks !
I'll bite.
For the most part political correctness is a ridiculous notion. It's nonsense flamed by people who are insecure and force their misguided thoughts onto others. In my opinion of course.
As far as how to refer to your offspring- your children will always be your children. If they are just minutes old or 100 years old. Refer to them as you feel, not how you think OTHERS feel. Honestly who cares what others think of how one addresses their own children. For me it will always be my children- no additional label needed.
Thank you Greg, I had a family member correct me when I said I spent the day with my kids, meaning my grandchildren and children. The relative commented they are adults now not kids. Coming from someone who has no children of their own.
Wow Greg - I have to give you the *infinity* number of kudos or pluses for that reply.
Line-by-line speaks in volumes of the truth, that's being reduced, cancelled, or inverted by too many nowadays. (Not who I can entirely blame most of them). Thx
I agree with Greg. But, don't look now, because NJ just passed a BOE rule not to call 'kids' male or female now, so - It's more confusing by the day.
“The kids” will always be “the kids”. Having used the phrase over and over again, for 18 years, is a hard habit to break. At what point does one switch the phrase? On their 18th birthday? Midnight? The time they were born? Fa-getta bout it! The kids, almost 40, are alright!
A family member gets on my case when I use the phrase “kids”. She always says “they’re not baby goats!”.
What can I say? Old habits die hard.
You could say: I spent the day with my son/daughter, or with my kids and grandkids, or with my son's/daughter's family, or just any way you want. Who cares what anybody else thinks you should say, it's not their family and you should be happy about that LOL
advice needed
Did they make a suggestion as to what THEY think you should call them? I mean if you're above a certain nebulous age, it's very unlikely you're going to have minor children, even if it is possible, including if you adopted children. It's superfluous to specify your "adult" children. My Mom's 88, and my Dad nearly 93. They both call me their son, and the group of my siblings and myself are their "kids", not "adult kids", or "minor kids", or goodness knows what else, just their "kids".
IMHO, they're nit-picking for no good reason except to cause you agita, perhaps because they have issues in their own life and want to make others in the family feel aggravated and spread the pain around.
How about...this is my son (name) or my daughter (name). Or, for the example you gave...my grandchildren?
I don't see how anyone could have a problem with that. If they feel the need to "correct" you, it says more about them than it does about you.
I agree with GC especially if you have children that already have children of their own...I refer to my children (who are both now over 50 years old) as My son...and My Daughter and then give their names..
Greg's opinion is correct. What a 60-year-old person would call his/her parents, senior citizens? Mom and dad!
Bizarre how some people can get so bent out of shape because of a word someone uses.
Some people aren’t happy unless they’re miserable.
Right up to the time my grandmother and grandfather died (in their mid-late 80’s) my mother and her sisters called them, “mommy and daddy.” Heck, even when they’re talking about memories to this day they refer to them by those monikers. And my mom and her sisters are now grandparents themselves.
