Rt 46 Closed 8/22/20 - Motorcycle Accident

Rt 46 is closed west bound at the top of the hill at naughright and east bound at East avenue.

Looked like a motorcycle underneath a pickup truck near the dentist's office by East ave.

Hope for the best... expecting the worst. :(

Oh crap, I was afraid that's what it was when I went by since there wasn't another vehicle in front of the one with the twisted bumperguard. I was on East Ave. and suddenly had many Police vehicles going by. We were being waved around the accident and someone looked to be giving CPR to a person lying on the shoulder of the road.

It looked as though the Budd Lake EMS Fire vehicle was on its way to the scene just as we were passing the light by Target. I hope they got to this person quickly enough and they're able to make a full recovery. A friend got hit years ago and it devastated him physically. He was very lucky just to have made it out alive.

Ironically, just a short while after this on Rt. 46 E, there was a couple on motorcycle that passed me in Budd Lake. They were nearly in my blind spot, so I looked over and waved to let them know I knew they were there. They finished passing me and a Cavanaugh Pest Control Van (154) pulled out and turned almost right in front of them at the CVS Budd Lake intersection and the bike had to take evasive action to keep from either hitting them, dropping the bike, or both.

Way to go, person in the van. You're being reported to headquarters, by the way.

:(

Just came in from working in the on my bike and saw this. Ugh.

Tomorrow is 2 years since my accident- and I haven't got back on it yet, but have been working on it recently.

I'm not religious- but lets hope fate is in favor of whoever got ran over by an inattentive a-hole.

hi
Saw police taking pictures of the pickup - bike was gone by then.
There was personal items strewn all over the road- papers. clothes, etc.
Traffic was being diverted back up the hill but absolutely no detour signs so people not from this area would have no idea where to go- way to go road crew. lol.

It was not a pick up truck that ended up on the motorcycle.

it looked like a jeep Cherokee with lift kit.

yes you are right- it was a Jeep brown color

For some reason I seem to remember a Black or other very dark colored Toyota SUV with a (badly bent) brush guard in front.

I was trying to pay more attention to the road, especially since the driver in front of me kept braking trying to get a better look and there were people in the roadway. Didn't want to be in a secondary accident.

Sadly, they were airlifted to the hospital and apparently lost a limb:-(

No... it may not... not everyone would want to live crippled.

Many individuals compete at the highest level of athletics utilizing prosthetics.
It’s whats in your heart that counts.
Sorry you consider them “cripples”.
Think they’d beg to differ.

Stymie Stymie
Aug '20

No.

That's entirely my point.

Not everyone has the same drive and confidence of a high level athlete.

Many wouldn't 'have the heart' or desire to live without a limb.

Some do. Some don't. Don't put everyone in the same box.

And yes- even those athletes are crippled by definition.

crippled; crippling\ ˈkri-p(ə-)liŋ \ Definition of cripple (Entry 3 of 3) transitive verb. 1 : to deprive of the use of a limb and especially a leg the accident left him crippled.

Just because modern society dislikes the use of proper words and phrases doesn't mean the word and the reality doesn't apply.

Same as we can't say handicap?

Cancel culture makes society worse- not better.

does anyone have an update on the person's condition

Today is the one year anniversary of being hit in Chester. I am now a below knee amputee. I don't consider myself a cripple, but it certainly has changed my life. I can't do everything that I used to, but I am back to work for 4 months now. I have fallen a coule times and it takes a day or 2 to be able to walk right again, especially when you hit your stump with no prosthetic on. It certainly overall is a life change, and yes thanks to technology I am able to walk and do most things. I will tell you that running or sports will certainly take time. It takes almost a year to get really adjusted the the prosthetic, and adjustments need to be made. Anyhow, I saw this accident after it happened yesterday, and it made me angry. Angry because people just do not pay attention, and choices directly affect peoples lives. I don't know exactly what happened, but I do know that man on the motorcycle, his life will be changed forever. However, if anyone knows him, and he would ever like to talk with someone who has been through it, please feel free to contact me.

Hopefully the old axiom "no news is good news", taken as not having updates, means that things are going as well as possible (and not that there is no news that is good news).

HPD and Washington Twp.'s Facebook pages, WRNJ's page, and the initial link that I found are lacking in updates. Most of the other links I've been finding are just copies of the link I found earlier. I really hope this gentleman has an easier recovery than my friend did.

I still can't forget the images of the first motorcycle accident I ever saw around 12 years old. Someone had either cut the cyclist off or had stopped suddenly when the cyclist had been following too closely. That was just over 50 years ago and it was a fatal one. This reminded me a lot of that, except the bike was apparently in front of the other vehicle. I'm just glad this person's alive, though as Josh and the Schmidty know, there are a LOT of challenges and recuperating afterwards.

I wonder if this was the same biker I saw a day earlier going 46 east up the mountain towards Budd Lake. He tailed my wife and I, so I moved over. Then he tailed a pickup that was also traveling above the speed limit. He then went on to pass that truck and another car in the right hand lane by driving between them! Not even a quarter mile later he was also in between two other cars. At that point he was clear and accelerated to at least 80 miles an hours. Yes we need to look out for bikers.

The bike was in front of the SUV, not behind it. Sure, there are some hot dogs that ride motorcycles, including those that go 150 miles an hour sideways and down at the same time and kill a cop car by landing on it. But that's neither here nor there. Too many people turn right in front of motorcycles and somehow miss those headlights that are always on. If it's because the sun's in their eyes, that's one thing, but many times people either ignore them or try to rush across in front of them to save a few seconds.

They disappear even easier in a vehicle's blind spot than another car does, so yeah, while you have to watch for a few hot dogs, you really need to watch out for the average rider to know where they're at. Situational awareness. There's only so much they can do to avoid 4+ wheelers who aren't paying attention or don't care.

Pray for him....

here is a good article explaining how a driver doesn't see the motorcycle. I have been saying just about the same thing for many years. The driver takes a quick look to see if a car is coming. It is getting worse all the time. Too many drivers barely slow down at a stop sign or right on red. just a quick peek and go. anywee the article

I wonder whether it might be a good idea to have motorcyclists have a red or orange flag/banner that can hang somewhere on the bike to help aid others in seeing them on the road more easily, Since most bikers wear black or gray, this may help.

Wondering what anyone's thoughts are on this idea, thank you

It is becoming much much more common now for a motorcyclist to have a bright vest or helmet...as well as add extra lights to the bike, and brake lights that flash upon application.

Unfortunately all such things are still time in comparison to a person glancing for a car.

I had on a bright yellow helmet and ride with the highbeam on during the day and the car still pulled out in front of me.

thanks AJMS I needed a good laugh!

Unfortunately this man lost his life. He was a great friend, and co worker of mine. He is from Massachusetts and was down there for work with our second work crew. His name was jake. PLEASE say a prayer for his family. They need it at this time. Hold your loved ones tight , people. <3

Joe Wall,

So sorry for the loss of your friend. Will pray for Jake's family and you during this difficult time.

Very sorry to hear that. Condolences.

Joe Wall

Very sorry to hear that. The last info published said that Jake had lost part of his leg, which is bad enough. I feel terrible for him, his family and their friends and coworkers. Did the investigation show how this tragedy unfolded and whether or not the driver of the Black Jeep is facing charges?

The man in the motorcycle accident on Saturday on route 46 did not die , and his name is not Jake..

SO

Is Joe Wall mistaken and on the wrong thread, or is he (or she, since anyone can make up a fake name, as we all know from past experience here) just some troll trying to make trouble? If it's the latter, then that's pretty sick.

Of course since both of you only seem to have only one post under your individual user names, it doesn't lend much to either of your credibility.

It would help if ANY of the local so-called news outlets had any kind of update on this accident. HPD's facebook page, WRNJ...useless as well as Washington Twp PDs Facebook and Twitter pages. I'm sure that people would like to at the very least send their well-wishes to this person and (/or condolences to) their family, if they know them or would like to help out.

It would be helpful if the local news would give an update to let others know that the biker did NOT die and his name is not Jake. Clearly they are still investigating. Condolences to Joe Wall if he lost his friend but he must be on the wrong thread.

This person involved in the accident in Hackettstown on Rt 46 is still alive

This is off-topic, but Phil D. raised a point that has been bothering me for quite some time. Trying to get local news, current and updated, in and around our Hackettstown area. We often see initial stories about fires or accidents on here or the local FB postings, and then....nothing. WRNJ is useless, no daily newspaper covers this area, it's frustrating. Most of what we do find on-line are just rumors or mis-information, similar to what was just posted above. Sorry for this rant.

Not hard to understand why the media isn’t jumping to cover a place many people actively don’t believe or use the media. At some point less opportunities equals less demand equal less supply. Star Ledger used to give one story per week; they stopped, no interest.

Strangerdanger Strangerdanger
Aug '20

So what do we want WRNJ to do? Call the hospital for an update? Ever hear of privacy for the patient!!

Charges for the driver of the Black Jeep? If any tickets were issued, it will be on the police report. Since it's a MVA, the police report is public record. The Washington Twp PD will provide a copy of the report to anyone who requests it. Any personal information will be blacked out, though, for privacy reasons. I'm always cautious to guess how an accident actually happened based on a few photos, so let's not assume the driver of the Black Jeep is at-fault.

Phil D. I know that the person that on the motorcycle is still alive in the hospital and his name isn’t Jake..Because he is my husband’s cusin....He is still in serious condition, he lost his leg and broke many bones and is very lucky he is still alive..

Let's all pray for this man .... regardless of your opinion, TY

It seems there was an honest misunderstanding here. I don't think anyone was trying to cause trouble. Also, I read a post on another site (may have been the community FB page?) by a woman who witnessed this loss and stated it was not the car's fault. That's not up for anyone but the police and insurance to decide, but what if that vehicle's driver or family reads this forum and sees they are being villainized w/o cause? That hurts too. That can be damaging too. I am sure they are devastated regardless of fault. I think we should keep everyone involved in our thoughts and prayers. No one wants or expects to be in a loss like this. I am very happy to hear the cyclist is recovering!
