Urgent question re: heating/furnace

Hi
I urgently need someone to come out and check why my heat will not go on.
Can you reccomend someone who would come out Monday morning?
Thanks for your help.

Have you tried pushing the reset button on furnace ?

What kind of heat do you have? Electric, oil/furnace, oil/steam... etc, etc.

Furnace/boiler issues- see Billy, who is always at Quick Check. Anyone know who I mean? He's awesome.

He came in 30 minutes when I had an emergency.
Another time, he talked me through what to do when I had a problem.
Such a great guy.

Lots of previous discussions about companies to use, including:

There's also a thread somewhere about how to trouble shoot the system.

I think you are talking about Scotty Rebecca.

Yes Nature Lover, that would be Bill Green from Scotty & Son Heating & Air Conditioning. A Good Day, please contact Bill at 908-850-3070. He's really great. Good luck.

Scotty & Sons, the business listing says Andover but the guy lives on Mt. Rascal. 908-850-3070.

If it's a gas furnace, Air Group has a lot of people and may be able to come out quickly. Nick Schulaka has more than one person as well, TGM is who I currently use and would give a call to see about availability. On HL it seems like there are some All Temp fans as well.

One of them should be able to come out quickly.

+1 AirGroup.

Thanks all. Appreciate the quick responses. Seems it is an older furnace and has loose wires. Fixed up now.

Rebecka is correct his name is Bill .,,,the business is Scotty & sons . I have used him for years.,.great guy!

The day we moved in (Thanksgiving Eve this year), our furnace quit. We called Scotty & Son and were very happy with the quick emergency service and fair price. They will be back to do regular maintenance soon.

I recommend Scotty & Sons also. Always responds and fair price.

Thanks to everyone who recommended Scotty & Sons.. Bill bailed us out today. Fast service fair price.... he gained both mine and my dads business.

Any one know of a good company that doesn't charge $100 just to walk in the door? Furnace keeps shutting off.

TGM services. Used them to service my old furnace and it works great now.

I had them clean my oil furnace and their rate was $225. About an hour it took. That price had everything set in it already.

Maybe you should consider signing up with a full service company which would have their own technicians 24/7

Both Scotty and Sons and All Temp did not return our calls when we left a message for help with a blocked central AC drain. Very, very disappointed in the lack of good customer service with just a courtesy call.

We've used ICE SYSTEMS for many years. They install/repair any/all types of heating & air conditioning. It's a small, local, family-run business that is quick, professional & HONEST in all aspects! They have always been there for us & always knows exactly how to fix what is broken! We would never trust anyone else with our air conditioning & heating needs!

Called my regular guy yesterday, only because I was desperate, left message, but no call back. That's why I'm looking for someone else. That, plus he's pricey, I feel.

Has anyone tried to contact Scotty's and Sons recently. Tried to call several times and also emailed with no response.

Not Scotty's and Sons but called both Dannys and Beams on 11/13 with no callback from either one. Spoke to the girl answering the phone at TGM twice (11/2 &11/9) still no callback from them either. Looking for a quote on some new work, no emergency. I can not understand at least a callback to tell me they are too busy (or whatever) Have all of them made so much money this year that they don't need any more work? Sad

We've been regular customers of Scotty's for years. I was concerned because they always give us a call back. Very unusual for them.

Old Tpke Resident
Nov '17

Same here old Tpke...I have always used them but after a no show and then no return call to reschedule I decided to call TGM.
I don't know if he just has enough customers that he doesn't need to bother or doesn't have the help or what, but I'm not going to beg someone to do work for me.
I guess I will stick with TGM and see how it goes. They were prompt and seemed to get the job done without issue.

I would not think they all made so much money this year....

Everyone waits to last minute, "Me included" Turn on heat first cold night and yup a problem. Meant to call months ago to have it serviced and cleaned. Many do not have a office person to keep returning calls sadly....

Scotty! Without a doubt!

Schedule and Service your boiler in the summer. 90% of no heat calls are at this time of year. All of the companies are overwhelmed with calls now.

Indie Indie
Nov '17

Yea did that indie.....still no show...no call. Then the eccuse is they aren't worried about heat since they are swamped with calls about servicing the AC.

Call Trinity Air (908) 938-7794 Scott , He is reasonably priced and will call you back. He's a great guy too. I gave up on the other local guys .

Re: Urgent question re: heating/furnace

My gas-fired furnace won't fire and I've traced the cause to a faulty pressure switch. The problem is that the company that made the one I have went out of business around the time the unit was installed.

My question is are they all fairly interchangeable or are they strictly specific to manufacturer? Attached is a photo of the switch and its connectors.

ianimal ianimal
Oct '18

Did you do an internet search ? I would imagine as long as the one you buy has the same specs it should work. Make sure that is the problem though. It could be a secondary issue. Good luck.

There is a many top one hierarchy in furnaces, so there is a high chance that it will be replaceable by another make. Before you replace it, make sure there is no blockage which would trigger it to prevent furnace ignition.

There are replacement pressure switches for what you have. There are also “universal” pressure switches that have the bilious to be set up in the field to match what is there. I agree with ijay, test and confirm that it is the switch and not a blockage of some sort.

RoadKingRider RoadKingRider
Oct '18

Remember that the blockage could be partial, enough to trigger the switch. Spider webs and bird nests is all that it takes.

I did negative and positive pressure testing on all the lines (i.e., suck and blow, lol) and airflow was free and easy. I have a buddy who does HVAC for a living and he's confident that it's the switch. He lives pretty far away so I didn't want to bother him to come out to my place if it's just a matter of swapping a new one out for the old.

And I did do a lot of internet searching, but there's not a lot of information that I could find related to pressure switches... just warehouses that you can order them from.

What does that sticker say? Can’t read it from the pic.

justintime justintime
Oct '18

The bottom one? "Blower"...

ianimal ianimal
Oct '18

Lol no, other one. Looks like there’s something written on it. Any clue could help.

The two questions i have are:
Is the switch normally open or normally closed?
What’s the pressure it is sensing?

justintime justintime
Oct '18

That's just the product identification tag... mfgr, serial number, rating, etc.

Pressure switches are normally open. Once the draft inducer blower starts, it should create a vacuum to vent the waste gases out. When the switch senses that vacuum, it closes and allows the natural gas supply to flow to the burners.

ianimal ianimal
Oct '18

Ok if you have the mfg number have you tried calling a hvac supply center, or possibly another mfg and let them cross reference it for you? If not have you googled the part number and found the specs?

I’m sure another switch will work but personally I would want the specs before purchasing.

justintime justintime
Oct '18

Pretty simple to test the switch... Ohm it out. While Unit running. Then while you blow through the hose. If both methods show it closes then you have other problems. Such as a small blockage in the exhaust vent.

Forcefed4door Forcefed4door
Oct '18

Good advice FF4D... I'll do that first.

ianimal ianimal
Oct '18

Start the furnace, when the draft purge blower starts, jump the pressure switch ; if the flame and combustion is sustained, then you can be assured you need the pressure switch. Don't operate the furnace with the switch jumped. Just jump it out as a test.

"...then you have other problems. Such as a small blockage in the exhaust vent."

Would 10 to 15 one-inch landscaping stones qualify as a "small blockage"? Nothing like a 4-year old son to make life interesting.... thanks for the suggestion. It triggered my memory of catching him trying to put a rock in there. I thought it was his first one. Not by a long shot, lol.

umm... I've been reading this thread - know nothing about furnaces, but I have one, so I've been following along...
THIS is a problem that I can understand! LOL
I hope that you have heat ianimal!

pmnsk pmnsk
Oct '18

Yeah, once I cleaned out all the rocks, the furnace fired right up.

Another question... I had to saw off the exhaust vent at the riser elbow on the exterior side of the house in order to clean out the rocks. The previous configuration was in the form of a periscope, with an open hole staring right at a 4-year old boy with a limitless supply of rocks... attractive nuisance at its finest.

When I replace the stack this weekend, can I put another 90 on it so that the opening points down? Or will that impact the exhaust flow capacity negatively? I guess my other option would be to re-do the periscope and put a screen fitting on it.

ianimal ianimal
Oct '18

If there is only 1 pipe coming out of the house you can put another elbow on it. It there are 2 pipes I wouldn’t recommend it. If you have to put a screen in the elbow there is a possibility of condensation catching on the screen and freezing over in the winter, screens normally only go in the fresh air intake pipes. If you have the installation manual you can reference what the manufacturer recommends for the termination of the exhaust pipe.
Usually when a “periscope” is used it is to raise the exhaust pipe at least 24” off the ground for expected snowfall.
Kinda long winded but I hope that helps!

RoadKingRider RoadKingRider
Oct '18

Better off leaving the same slant and installing a screen. Most air intakes have the screen and it stops rodents, large insects, and I guess rocks too...

Use a free flowing wire mesh. Road King is spot on that if you use a fine material in the pipe it can def. Form a block of ice from the condensation in freezing temps.

Forcefed4door Forcefed4door
Oct '18

Not long-winded at all. Good information that's greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

ianimal ianimal
Oct '18

The adapter is about $15 for the mesh, it is not dense so condensation won't freeze.
