just bought two tomatoes at donaldsons.it 7.70 cents for two tomatoes thats with the senior discount.how can tomatoes cost more then chicken.whats the best price for tomatoes around hackettstown
mel Last time I went to Donaldsons, I paid $5.44 for one large tomato. Orts Farms is cheaper. I paid $4.00 for 2 yesterday. Haven't eaten them yet, but assuming that they're good.
Joyce Polack Better to grow your own. If space is an issue, you can use pots. We've used them in the past with success.

ed caufield Check out the hackettstown farmers market every sunday behind the dollar general, 9:30-1. 3 vegetable vendors, plus lots of other vendors to shop from. Tomatoes are looking good!
Fourfieldsfarm Check the farm stand on route 46 in Great Meadows. They have all local produce as well as local honey amd flowers.
They are right next to Ed's trading post
The variation in prices is free entrprise. Just as folks are free to shop where they please - some liking the convenience, ambiance and atmosphere of a place like Donaldson's. Family and Mom & Pop businesses are run by hard working individuals. Let's stop focusing on ways to drive them out of business.
I fear that the Covid pandemic left too many individuals with too much time on their hands and this time was devoted to nitpicking and searching for what they disliked about anybody and evrything. The cure for Covid was found but the negative mindset of too many has not recovered.

Patti The high (tomato) prices have very little to do with covid or the mindset folks may or may not have adopted. It all has to do with the continuing high inflation and increasing energy costs across the board. The ever increasing high cost of living in the US is strangling a majority of American families. In my opinion of course....
With that said I do love Donaldson's tomato selection for sure.
Greg Patti, really? I think they have the worst produce at Weis. When I go it's either older stuff or just not appetizing. Bought a bag of potatoes once, got home and they were all eyes, but the bag wasn't see-through, so, ugh.
I've always known Alstede, Tranquility, and Donaldsons (since they've gotten bigger/more events etc) to have higher produce prices than the smaller farmstands, Best's, etc. Not covid related.
Donaldson's offers more experiences, facilities and things to draw people in, so it makes sense to expect higher prices at thise places.
I think WONDERING was saying that negative comments are attributable to a mindset that grew when people's lives changed during and since covid. S/he was not in any way talking about tomato prices, but rather people's reactions to them.
Ah, understood Ole timer. I can remember my parents complaining about "suburban" farmstands in the 80s/90s as this area saw an influx of new people, so to me its not a new thing :)
I do know Donaldsons has higher prices. I pay for the convenience of not having to drive out of town. Their quality is best IMO. But, they got me yesterday. I stopped for corn. Bought only what I needed. I never saw watermelon for $10.00 before, so I passed. Picked up 1 tomato, pint of tomatoes , and a cantaloupe. I thought I’m going straight home I’ll get one of those key lime pies. I admit I didn’t pay attention to my total at checkout. I swiped my card and left. When I took the pie out of fridge to show my hubby I noticed the price. As Roseanne Roseannadanna said “I thought I was gonna die”. $24.99. It’s funny now, but not then. I can’t believe how lazy I’ve gotten checking my receipts. Not your fault Donaldsons, I am to blame. I will never buy a pie from you again. There was no gold in it, not even a prize.
auntiel Shop Rite is/and or will be carrying local grown produce this month thru next. It is from a locally grown farm in this area. I find the prices to be much cheaper than local farm stands and a great buy when they come in. Today They had "Jersey Tomatoes" for $1.99. They were from south jersey and picked early for shipment. I did not buy any and bought a couple of plum tomatoes for a $1.69 a pound. I will only pay higher prices from local farm stands when it is convenient or much cheaper than the prices quoted here.

Went to Shoprite earlier this week, the cherries on sale were old, wilted and not totally ripe so I passed. Was in Weiss today and their cherries were firm and really good so I bought some. I can find off produce in any store. That's why I shop around.
Mr 4Paws I will go to Bests or Orts. Better prices than Donaldson's as just as good.
Wondering... don't think any of our comments about Donaldson's will be driving them out of business! Some people can still afford to pay their prices & they will continue to do so!
We picked up a whole bag of 5 very large tomatoes for $5 at the farm market on Main Street today.
Tranquility has delicious tomatoes!
I much prefer both the corn and tomatoes from Tranquility over Donaldson. The prices are a bit lower at Tranquility too, although I usually spending the money I've saved at their ice cream window.

Leslie Got a basket of 5 large tomatoes for $4.50 at farmers market on Main Street.
Plenty of other good things there too from many vendors.
Tomatoes at a little stand on RT 57 West in Broadway (Franklin Twp) just before Broadway Auto called Karen's has tomatoes for 4-5 dollars a basket.
AJMS Plenty of friends sharing their Jersey tomatoes now, but soon will have to be at the mercy of SR, Weiss, Wegmans.

Scott Tomatoes at Riamede in Chester ate bountiful & still PYO. Not sure if the price is per bag or per pound, but they're always terrific
Donaldson's$2.99 lb for tomatoes, Hackettstown farmers market $1.50 lb and they have a great variety of other foods
