Did you grow up in a town with an Army Base?
To day is Memorial Day. A day to reflect on those men and women that sacrifice their lives not just for our Freedom, but for the freedom for so many in other countries. As I sit here and watch many great war movies . I she'd tears for all those who really were in these wars. I grew up in East Hanover. Born and raised in a military town. The base was called The Nicky base. Us kids use to call it the Yankee base. Many kids from the base were good friends and a fun place to hang out. NJ had many Military basses now gone. Living in my town is why I will always honor our military. We had resepect for our Military, and I still do. Oh these are just a few in my collection of Military movies I have alot. These are the ones I've watched today. Saving Private Ryan, We Were Soldiers, Windtalkers, and Flags of Our Father's. Great movies! Thank you to those that served our Country! May you all rest in peace.
I was born on a Navy base in CA and loved on or near bases for the next 18 years of my life...being Navy we had to be by water...final stop NJ and my dad retired after 23 years. Lived in NJ from then on. Born in CA but consider myself a Jersey gal. Being a military dependent is a cool life, but not always easy. Proud of my dad for the service he gave
I never knew there was a facility in East Hanover. It was called the Nike Battery. Interesting.

The site is now, of course condos.....
Born in Fort Monmouth, grew up near Ft. Dix and went there for all of our healthcare. Loved going to the commissary and PX as a kid.
Married young and was stationed at Ft. Monmouth. Was there for two months and them went to Vietnam.
Said I would come back but never did. Loved the area.

Many residents of Hackettstown were employed at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover NJ.Several of my family members worked there. We used to visit the arsenal on Armed Forces Day.
If anyone hasn’t seen the HBO mini- series Band Of Brothers, I highly recommend watching it.
I grew up in East Hanover. Once a month or so they would raise the Nike missiles and people would drive by to get a look.
