Longboard Rules?
Anyone know the rules as to where its legal and safe for a teenager to ride their longboard in Hackettstown? Is it just the sidewalks? Thank you!
Way cool, love the longboarder. My son was just using the newly paved roads outside H-town and Field of Dreams path for flat-landing it but path too thin, too flat, to gain much speed. Honestly not sure of the rules and its an extreme sport no matter where you do it. Best to have buddies. Love the Longboard and yes, folks, there's a difference. Think Fish surfboard, short, with multiple fins for agility in the small stuff (like skateboard) versus Mals or the long boards surfers (like longboard skateboard) use for nose riding or the big waves. Less agile, more speed, bigger waves.
Get it?
Longboards not for skate-parks.
I left NJ a year or so ago so I'm not sure the current conditions of the roads. Bilby road was a good ride with little traffic depending on the time of day. Washburn road off of Rockport was also a good road to skate.
Believe it or not but the far end of Pequest Rd recently paved with multiple grades.
Seriously, most towns ban them on "Main Street." Not sure what Hackettstown's rules are but I doubt they want these activities on Main.
It's all on the town website:

isn't that special. And they confiscate your board. Them's fighting words. Thanks for posting Greg, I never would have imagined so grand a scale for prohibition.
probably made surf boards in the musky illegal too.
NJ, let's see: $46 for not wearing seat belt, $25 for not wearing a bike helmet, jaywalking $54, $400 fine for texting, $200 for cell phone, $50 minimum for running a stop sign, and $100 for being on a skateboard, on the sidewalk, on a public street.
Of course, it doesn't matter to the law if you have a skateboard helmet on or not......
What's next, fining kids in Radio Flyers?
Methinks some of the town fathers are fuddy duddies trapped in the 50's trying to avoid evil skateboard gangs. Talk about harshing a mellow.

From what I can tell it's still a safety issue. They don't want you on streets that can potentially carry regular thru traffic. It's the same in Washington. Longboards and skateboards are slightly more difficult to control than say a bicycle and not sidewalk-friendly due to the size of the wheels. Also you don't really have the option of blinking lights and I don't see people wearing reflective gear while riding.
Riverfront Park has a good paved section but it might be a little flat. Meadowbreeze in Washington also has a nice paved path with a short hill for babby's first bombing run.
