Fireplace repairs
Has anybody used Ryan & Son for chimney repairs? I need a second opinion and looking to them for their expertise on replacing a chase cover at the top of the chimney. Any reliable handymen done this before? Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I have seen the other threads on this forum but looking for other opinions.
This advice is GOLD:
98% of chimney sweeps/repairman are crooked.
This guy is a gem - honest as the day is long and all-around wonderful.

We used Ryan and Son to replace a chimney from our wood stove that another "recommended" chimney sweep tried to "repair" the previous year and was totally wrong.
Highly recommend them:)
I used them to clean my fireplace and had them replace my fireplace doors. I had a good experience with them.
I was going to use Ryan for a number of projects - I found them very expensive and they recommended work that Up on the Roof said was not necessary- and it wasn't
I never had Up on the Roof do any actual repair work, but they did an inspection and sweep when I was moving out (to concur/negate what I thought were questionable findings by a different company) and they seemed like very honest stand-up guys - both Aaron and Wayne. They actually waived some costs that I was willing to pay for their time when dealing with the relocation company.
looking for updates on this topic - want to have my gas fireplace checked before i turn it on this year.....
Highly recommend Up on the Roof.
They did a cleaning for me two years ago, and added some money saving tips.
Very reasonable rates.
Looking for updated recommendations as I need the liner in my chimney replaced. The heating system is supplied by a furnace via fuel oil. Any. feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I used Luna Chimneys, South of Newton in Andover on 206. A little expensive but they know their stuff. They will do a good job of explaining the process before purchase. They are very clean. Also, if you are replacing, there's no science for removal of the packing material around the sleeve. Hopefully it all comes up, but if it doesn't, can be a longer job --- may bust some drywall inside. They can explain, tell you your odds, and probably will be a nothing. Mine was like 35 years old, probably a material they don't use anymore, so I appreciated the heads-up, and felt great when it all came out. FYI --- the process is pretty darned fast.
Note: the newer more efficient oil burners put off different gases than the old. So, if you have old, might get new higher efficiency one before you move, be sure to check to see if new sleeve can handle. Learned that the hard way when boiler installers didn't check, the new boiler degraded the existing flu pretty fast, and had to replace after the fact. Woulda been nice if boiler guys, who do chimneys too, had given me a heads-up.
