KoalaNJ has enough red flags to be Switzerland. Why would you say Easter Morris County and then suggest the most far western Morris County towns, including right on the border with Warren? And then talk about the commute when commuting from Route 80 at Allamuchy would be far quicker than the highway land locked places in Morris County?

The other outright bigots aren't worth a response.

With the mention of all of those coastal towns that guy is going to work at, I don't think geographically here is the right place to move. However, that doesn't take away from the large steaming pile of misinformation being distributed.

That was a pretty funny read. Didn't mention anything good about this town at all. From reading that I wouldn't move here.

My concern with some illegals is that we here in the USA have no record or knowledge of crimes such as rape, child molesting and murder that some of them may have committed in their country before coming here . Take 1,000,000 illegals from any country in the world and there will be a percentage. .

The officer observed an injury to his hand and was then transported to Hackettstown Regional Medical Center. Through an investigation it was determined that 26yro Luis Avelar-Vazquez of Hackettstown, NJ broke the side window to the business and then made entry. While Luis was inside the business he damaged the cash register by using a pair of metal shears in an attempt to gain access. Luis also had in his possession a burnt marijuana cigarette and a marijuana pipe. Luis Avelar-Vazquez was charged with burglary by entering a structure, 2 counts of criminal mischief, possession of under 50grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of burglary tools. Luis was unable to post the $50,000.00 bail and was then lodged in the Warren County Correctional Facility. Assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Rescue Squad.

The point that seems to go over some heads is that crimes committed by illegals would NOT be committed if they were not here illegally to begin with. Why is that so hard to comprehend ? Many legal American citizens have been slaughtered on our roads by illegals . You can google many of these events exman and post for us.

jerseycash5
Apr '14

Denis - Unlike others, I didn't selectively choose to focus on a narrow set of violations. I simply quoted the most recent postings by the HPD on their Facebook page.

Given that my wife was recently a victim of a "traffic violation", eg hit and run, I don't consider people who violate traffic laws (and then disregard their tickets as harmless). I also don't consider people who choose to disregard drug laws as harmless. I agree with you that they are not as severe as a burglary but a crime is a crime and we have many "natives" committing crimes. I do find it ironic that you only commented on the "petty" crimes and not the more severe ones I posted.

jerseycash5 - I've been on record many times stating that people need to come here legally. I did, my family did, and many other people I know did.

What I don't choose to do is walk around focusing on one group when there are plenty of crimes being committed by all groups. I don't need to google squat to understand that.

Illegals, regardless of race, are here illegally, and they are on our dime! Yes, many "legals" as mentioned above, commit crimes too, that is society. Illegals tax our systems and resources, but do not contribute. "5CATMOM", since you asked, my grandparents immigrated into the US legally over 100 years ago. They had to learn English, there was no "press 2 for Polish" or bilingual signs....BTW, my original post never mentioned race, just that another illegal immigrant commited a crime. Also, I grew up in this town and over the years had, and still have, hispanic friends. Their families were here legally, they worked, bought homes and paid taxes.

I think the idea is that if we were able to actually control our border we could keep many (most?) of the crimes committed by illegal aliens from happening at all. Sure, some of them may enter the country legally (and commit crimes), but then they actually have something to loose... I have no problem with immigration, my grandparents were immigrants. I have a problem with illegal immigration. People seem to think one equates the other.

Brendan Brendan
Apr '14

"....my grandparents immigrated into the US legally over 100 years ago."

Legally? - Sure they did; there were no restrictions that far back! Maybe they would have come anyway?

Since many of us believe in "individual liberty" and "the pursuit of happiness", we should at least feel regret that our country can no longer welcome all who want to come to better themselves.

Mr G - Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Germans used to say thank goodness for the Irish. The same is true of these posts. No common sense. Blame everyone else, never look in the mirror. Conviction by appearance. "Us" vs. "Them".

Everyone is welcome legally, remember Ellis Island ! Legally is the key here, if someone commits a crime,do you know his name? His or her real name, where they are really from? Who do you go after for the crime, there name could change in a day.The key word here is Legal ! I can't break the laws they do,can you? Go down town, stand between the old Strand movie theater, and the health food store, see if you can get day work, for cash, no taxes, and do it everyday! I think you might get in trouble,so would the owner who picks you up! Is that conviction by appearance? We are looking the other way,and we have all these people with no jobs ! So please come to the United States Legally, pay taxes, have a social security card, pay for medical , like us , then reap the rewards !

jd2 --- nice pick up. and amazingly most of our forefathers arrived to take the jobs that no one else wanted or dared to do. and at the end of a truly long, dirty day, we were known for catching a buzz, a big buzz. However, we did not risk all to cross the border just to commit criminal activities like today's illegals who risk all just to come over just to get stoned, try to pry open a cash register, cut our hand, and then kindly open the door for the police.

iPhone-imal iPhone-imal
Apr '14

Calico,

As mentioned above, a hundred years ago there were few "illegals" because there were few restrictions on immigration.

What "free" health care do they get now? I suppose maybe at the emergency room, for those who can't pay? Maybe in the 1920's, let's say, undocumented people would have been treated by sympathetic doctors for critical problems, maybe some were refused treatment? Not sure.

Still, you make a valid point as to how "illegal" persons fit into our system of entitlements (such as schooling), which is why there is a comprehensive immigration reform bill that has passed the Senate on a bipartisan basis, but is unfortunately not even being brought up in the House of Representatives by the leaders there.

jd2, I don't think any immigration reform bill should be brought up until our borders are secure.

Sorry emaxxman, an unpaid traffic ticket, and a marijuana pipe is petty in my book. The reason these two were mentioned is highlight that you are trying to make a point by flooding the post with recent arrests most off which are no way are on the same level as the crime originally cited.

Denis Denis

Denis - In my original posts, there were:

3 motor vehicle-alcohol related incidents
1 hit and run
1 traffic warrant arrest
2 illegal pot pipes (of which one was also an illegal Rx possession)

and yet you only focused on the two "petty" crimes and ignored the more serious ones.

I'm sure if an illegal was caught with a pot pipe, no one would consider it a petty crime.

Slacker Alert, Monday 11:51am (allegedly) smoking dope...

Berardi's a real winner there.

On 5/3/14 at approx 3:51AM the Hackettstown Police responded to Al’s Quality Cleaners (208 Rt182) in reference to a 911 call for an individual requesting help. When officers arrived on location, an employee, who was sleeping in after performing maintenance on equipment, observed an individual enter the business and then rummage through drawers. The officers observed a male fitting the description in the Rite Aid parking lot. Through an investigation it was determined that 50yro John Berardi of Long Valley, NJ threw a rock through the front window and then entered the building. John stole an undetermined amount of money. John was charged with burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, theft and refusal to provide fingerprints. John was unable to post the $25,000.00 bail and was then lodged in the Warren County Correctional Facility. Assisting at the scene was the Hackettstown Detective Bureau. Later that morning the Hackettstown Police responded to Studio Nails (186 Rt182) in reference to a burglary. Through an investigation it was determined that John Berardi opened the rear window and entered the business. A video surveillance caught John going through the cash register and drawers of the business. Nothing appeared to have been stolen. John was charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Another Bail was set at $25,000.00 and John is still lodged in the Warren County Correctional Facility.

Cash5, its because emaxx (long time HL poster) who is not Hispanic, is just tired (As am I) of people posting on HL crimes committed by person or persons with Hispanic sounding last names then that person or persons being accused of being in this country illegally. Yet rarely does anyone post when a crime is committed by someone with a non Hispanic name. As if only non whites are the ones who commit all crimes. As for the (Could that junk have been headed for our bucolic town ) comment, explain the heroin use in this BUCOLIC TOWN as you call it, long, (as in years) before this guy got caught.
There is no such thing as a drug free town in America.

And by honest I mean they are actually doing a back-breaking job, although it is technically illegal of course.

In a perfect world, they would not be there in the morning. But as you know we don't live in a perfect world...

Wow...looks like I missed an exciting day on the forum while I was hanging out on Main Street.

I think there is some confusion here. I originally pasted an announcement from the HPD page about a Victor White. I made no judgments about white people. I can see how that would be confusing. Some of my best friends, in-laws, neighbors, colleagues, best man at my wedding, etc. are white.

My original post also only questioned counts of people based on immigration status. If one can assess Berardi's immigration status from just his name (and even infer that he's white), then they are certainly better than I.

emaxxman emaxxman

I am a bit confused. John Beradi was arrested at 3:51am on May 3rd and was unable to post the $25,000 bail. He is then arrested later that morning and again is unable to post another $25,000 bail. Don't you need to appear before a judge and the court sets the bail amount? Not sure he would be arrainged that early in the morning. Also, why was bail only set at $5,000 two days later when he was arrested for a third time. Something doesn't smell right.

All-You-Can-Eat Taco Bars Deemed Offensive, Face Campus Extinction

Every year across the nation, several Pi Beta Phi sorority chapters host all-you-can-eat “Pi Phiesta” taco bar fundraisers at their respective campuses to raise money for charity.

But that longstanding tradition, typically held around Cinco de Mayo, is in jeopardy.

In the past few weeks, pressure from a handful of Latino students at two high-profile universities who complained the events are offensive prompted dramatic changes to two “Pi Phiesta” fundraisers.

At Dartmouth College, the fundraiser was cancelled outright, and at Stanford University, the sorority girls scrapped their Mexican themed “Pi Phiesta” for a summery, ocean-themed one, although they still served tacos.

Nevertheless, the future of “Pi Phiesta” fundraisers across the nation hang in the balance as the charitable tradition faces increased scrutiny from the politically correct campus police.

No one is saying that it's OK for illegals to be here. No one is denying that there aren't illegals here in the U.S. The problem is that people like you see a bunch of Hispanics on a corner and immediately think they are illegal. Could it be that some are here illegally? Sure. There is always a possibility. To automatically assume guilt first (and require them to prove their innocence) goes against what this country supposedly stands for. Is that OK to you?

Also, what's the solution? Do you have one? Are you going to frisk every Hispanic person and force them to prove their legal resident status? What do you do about the other races that are here illegally (which accounts for almost half of the illegal population?)

History shows us that the only viable solution is to remove the opportunities and the illegals will go home. It happened during the recent recession. Start targeting the businesses that hire the illegals. Put them out of business when they are found guilty. No jobs = no illegals. And BTW, the businesses who hire the illegals aren't paying their fair share of taxes either.

I don't want my tax dollars to go to support the health and education of illegals either. And agree that we shouldn't assume everyone standing on the corner is illegal. I feel sorry for owner of the sew/vac store, who has posted no loitering signs, and the guys still stand there. But this problem is complex and removing the jobs they perform may not be a valid solution.

Many work seasonal jobs on farms and follow the harvest. In some cases, farmers have a difficult time finding legal US workers to perform some of these jobs. Not all, but many US workers just don't want to work that hard for the wage, or don't want to get dirty and sweat!

hktownie hktownie
May '14

BLD -agreed,

An interesting question may be this:

Back in, say, 1776, there were no restrictions in the free movement of people across borders, here, and probably everywhere else. Perhaps moving where-ever you want is a natural human right?

But entitlements, here and in other developed countries, have ruined this possible right, as it cannot be tolerated for people to move somewhere in order to receive them.

So the question is, if entitlements did not exist, would there today be no objection to the free movement of people across borders?

I for one object to free movement of people across our borders ! The museum of 911 is open today, lets not forget,to secure our country, and keep it safe,no more open arms policy, your either legal or your not ! We need to know there history, before they become citizens. We are not talking about Hispanics only,we need to check everyone that wants to come to America.Remember Ellis Island, and old idea with a lot of merit !

Uh.....Ellis Island was open door until the 1920's, an outcome of WWI......by that time the vast majority of immigrants that passed through Ellis had already done so.

So the answer is ? 40% approval rate?

Lobo...could not agree with you more on your last post about the 911 Museum....

htownlifer htownlifer
May '14

Is there a question?

Meanwhile, of course illegals should not get entitlements illegally; that's the law. They do however get emergency medical assistance until someone changes that law.

So once again let's deal with the great alien entitlement fraud. First we can go to FOX to see some latino buying fresh Mahi Mahi with SNAP benefits and explain the illegal alien fraud or......you can look at both sides of the entitlement mess starting on the plus side: illegals pay taxes. Sales tax, property tax (whether they own or rent), income tax, medicare and social security (if their employer is legal). If their employer does not follow the law, the same non payment of taxes would probably occur for citizens. Currently there's about $7B in unclaimed social security by illegals every year, the "suspense" file should be over $200B by now. Illegals fund about 10% of the social security system without getting much of anything back. There's just not a lot of illegal alien social security fraud, but there's a heck of a lot of illegals paying in.

On the negative side: they somehow get entitlements like social medicare, and SNAP benefits using forged papers. How much nobody knows but we do know there's about $200B in taxed wages each year without a refund being generated.

In aggregate, the net sum illegal alien entitlement fraud estimate at the federal level is billions to the plus side --- they pay in more than they take out. Matter of fact, be careful what you ask for: if these folks became legal today, we'd tank on legal entitlements instantly if they were allowed to take what they deserve in terms of social security, welfare, and tax refunds. If they leave, we'd have to pick our own cotton.

mistergoogle mistergoogle
May '14

GC, what was the 1740's German situation?

In response to Lobo, I should revise my question about free movement across borders, in that it was never accepted by any society that people perceived to be an enemy would be welcome.

Remember that free movement could benefit any of us, if we ever were to decide, for any reason, that life somewhere else would be better! And that you could always come back if it isn't.

Immigration overall has been a huge plus for the U.S.; many of our best people are immigrants. But yes, we need to somehow control the influx under present circumstances. But a little empathy for people who simply want to better themselves would be better than labeling them as "criminals". Most want to work, not "collect".

jd2 - Before there was a United States, Pennsylvania was private property owned by the Penn Family. William Penn sent flyers to the war areas of Germany begging them to take free land because he respected their farmers and wanted them for colonists. Open door and thousands risked the voyage down the Rhine.

Interesting, thanks, GC.

I've read, can't recall where exactly, that the German-speaking population in America in the early days, say, 1776, was quite significant, maybe 50%.(!?) But, they did not involve themselves in politics at all, didn't write much of anything, and so are basically forgotten. Benjamin Franklin thought about this, and why it was so. He decided it was because the Germans, unlike the English, were not accustomed to institutions that gave rise to politics or literature, etc. There was after all no "Germany" in those days, mostly just a bunch of smaller states run by kings and princes. (Except Prussia?) Nor did the Germans sail the seas, set up colonies, obtain slaves, etc.

Press Release(9/2/14):Burglary/Criminal Trespass/Theft Of Movable Property Arrests.

On 9/2/14 at approx 12:34AM the Hackettstown police responded to the 400 block of Center St for a report of a burglary in progress. When officers were responding, the individuals left the residence and fled on foot. The officers then arrived on location and located 2 individuals lying on the ground behind a sports equipment box in Morgan’s Field. The two males were identified as 18yro James Biamonte of Hackettstown, NJ and 19yro Darren Knudsen of Hackettstown, NJ. Through an investigation it was determined that the two males entered a vehicle belonging to the resident and stole a Garmin GPS. The two males then entered the residence in an attempt to steal items but were scared off by the homeowner. Both were charged with burglary by entering a structure, criminal trespass and theft of movable property. Both were released pending a court appearance.

Why were they not put in jail and required to post bond? Aren't burglary and breaking and entering felonies?

For those that think his parents didn't give the parental guidance needed, do you realize his mother died when he was pretty young and his father a few years later. Not an excuse for his actions but please, don't drag his parents into mix.

He is still a very young man and has plenty of time to turn his life around. In the bigger picture what he did was not that big of a deal if he does not repeat the criminal activity.

Flash forward 10 ten years, he may be a great asset to society or something else. The choice is his...

I recently saw a comment that is now deleted. Stating about the oldies sister harvesting the social security money. Now I don't the Knudsen family personally but being that I was in a similar situation as them I would like you all to know that the money from social security is so help raise the children, food, clothing roof over there heads it has nothing to do with saving money. Look up what social security is before you make stupid comments. Also for those that at talking bad about that family just remember not everyone is as perfect as you. I bet these children wish they had it as easy as most but unfortunately there lives as changed at a young age for them all. Maybe people should try to understand other situations before talking about about everyone. What these kids is were bad yes and stupid now maybe this can be there turn around and I hope it is. It sickens me on how everyone is so quick to judge the whole family. If none of you dealt with there life's personally or lived a day in there shoes you can't say anything. I want to see how perfect you all are.

This is the exact problem with society today!! It is very sad that he lost his parents but that is by all means NO excuse for him to rob somebody!!! Everyone gives excuses these days for kids and that is why this world is so messed up! The bottom line is he/they are grown men! And we all know right from wrong weather are parents are here or not.

18 and 19 are grown men? So, then they would have no problem walking into a liquor store and buying beer or a convenience store and buying cigarettes, in the case of the 18 year old? Or does society prevent them from buying beer and cigarettes because they are still really just stupid kids who have a tendency to make bad decisions? You see the conundrum, right?

ianimal ianimal
Sep '14

Not seeing it at all ianimal. When you turn 18 you are considered an adult. So, what your saying is in New Jersey we are not adults until we are 21 because that's when we can drink? As I said, excuses are made too often. At 18 you are old enough to go and fight for our country. So do you think we should not let "stupid kids" join the armed forces either.

Armed forces are a way to straighten some people out in many cases. That said, I have always felt that if 18 is old enough to serve your country you should be able to legally drink and buy tobacco products. Once 18, it should be your choice.

Of course with the way things are these days, with "kids" living in their parents' houses and staying on their medical insurance until they are around 45 years old, no wonder why 18 seems so young and immature.

Calico696 Calico696
Sep '14

"So, what your saying is in New Jersey we are not adults until we are 21 because that's when we can drink?"

I'm not saying that; the law is saying that. "Underage", "minor"... these are terms applied to people under 21. It certainly doesn't appear that they have full legal "adult" status, does it?

The law also says that you are an adult at 18, because that is the age when you can be sent to prison, join the army, enter into a contract, etc.

Like I said... "conundrum".

ianimal ianimal
Sep '14

i don't give a flying f if they had a rough life or not. There is no excuse to break into someone's house and rob them!! What he did was not a big deal?? They family was home, these kids are lucky no one got hurt, because they break into the wrong home when someone is there and this could have ended a lot differently.

darwin darwin

No one is saying his parents dying is an excuse. That fact is that having siblings guide young and lost emotionally children is much harder then parents being able to guide children. " I'm not sure why people get so nasty when alcohol is involved."

It might have something to do with the fact that there seems to be 8 or 10 men for every woman within that specific demographic in town. A lot of guys, regardless of ethnicity, want to either fight or do something else that begins with the letter "f" when they're drunk. It's not much different from keg parties in high school... the fewer girls that were there, the better chance that someone was getting punched in the face by the end of the night.

ianimal ianimal
Sep '14

Alcohol puts the brain to sleep slowly. The thinking brain goes first and you get stupid. The more that happens the more the emotional brain takes over. You start "crying in your beer". When even the emotional brain starts going down people often lash out and the violence starts. It's a natural consequence of the level of alcohol involved.

As far as I'm concerned, alcohol simply brings out the true person inside. As a college student, I've had my shares of binge drinking. I never got violent because I'm not necessarily a violent person. I've seen people become belligerent and/or violent. They were the same belligerent/violent a-holes (just to a lesser degree) when they were sober.

Signs, like when you only have $2.72 to your name and can't afford the $4.55 for the cheapest stinking rotten beer and have to steal it and drink by the rail road tracks when you're over 25 years old. Yeah, those signs. (look at the previous history)

But all of "those people" are the downfall of society and not this guy and his lack of delivery of his birth right. Make the signs out of tissue paper so he can punch them in his anger management class and not have to refuse medical help. What is he going to say in his court appearance? "I know I'm right but it's a case of reverse discrimination and the 'PC Crowd' made me a bad guy." ???

Time to grow up.

I wonder how often this happens and goes unreported. Good for the other employee to call him out.

"violations included one for general food safety and another for not having employees trained in ServSafe, a state-mandated certification"

Geez, you have to take a class to know that you can't spit into someone's food?

.

Completely agree Calico. I never send anything back. I am not a huge fan of eating out to begin with since I've heard so many horror stories about what goes on in the kitchen.

I know that background checks cost businesses money- but Google is free....just saying

Is this the same John Stagg of Great Meadows that was sent to prison for 10 years ( is out of jail awhile now)for almost killing the gas station attendant with a baseball bat (gas station across from M & M )during a robbery a while back? The chef has the same name about the right age and was from Great Meadows. If it is it sounds like he isn't too nice a guy.

LOL, if you watch Channel 7 news, do you even have enough money to go out for dinner in the first place? ABC is the worst network on TV... I think the only thing they broadcast that I ever watch is Castle and even that is probably 5 episodes deep on my DVR.

Wow, I could say it must be a slow news day, but with Ebola and Enterovirus D68, ISIS

Really? You think it happens all the time? I've worked in restaurants before and have never witnessed anything. Such a gross thought!

Sensible co-worker? There's no way that could get to the dining room without the entire kitchen doing nothing. Anyone sensible would have grabbed that plate and throw it in the trash before a server had the chance to get it. Not at all surprised the article says the entire kitchen staff was fired wholesale. They're all complicit and shouldn't be working in the food industry any more.

Okay Clyde I always though Harry Bellafonti was Italian and then I found out he's black.

"I think Charlie Sheen is Mexican so maybe Stagg is also. Sometimes names fool you."

Sheen's real last name is Estevez. Charlie took his father's stage surname. Emilio kept his father's real last name. So while some names will fool you, that one shouldn't.

LOL The best part is that he's banned from Walmart. Get a little class kid and expose yourself at Macy's or Brookes Brothers. His defense team will blame it on the media and cite yesterdays headlines about the Newton cop exposing himself on traffic stops.

On February 13, 2015 at 2:42 pm Annamarie Karner (32) of Mansfield was arrested and charged with shoplifting from Walmart. She had concealed merchandise in her purse before attempting to leave the store without paying. She had also been in the store the night prior and stole similar items. She was charged and released pending a Court appearance - same EMT from Mansfield forgery https://www.facebook.com/28MTPD

NJ Transit vehicle slides on ice into Lexus, temporarily closing Hackettstown Station

A New Jersey Transit maintenance vehicle slid on icy tracks into a passenger vehicle Tuesday morning in Hackettstown, according to police there.

The maintenance vehicle driver was taken for treatment, and the passenger vehicle driver complained of knee pain. Because of the incident, police said, trains were suspended for about three hours from entering the Hackettstown Station
