How very sad. May she rest in peace and her family stay strong after losing two children this way.
Oh my gosh when I read they lost another child the same way I was so sad. Of course even one is sad and devastating but two? I can't even imagine the grief.
Something positive for 2017

I feel bad for this family.
My girlfriend's aunt lost 3 sons to car and motorcycle accidents over the years. Her daughter died a year or so ago from heart failure. And her grandson died from drugs shortly after his mother. I don't know how that woman and her husband function with all of that loss.
Yes, everyone feels grief, yet they resist a rehab facility in their immediate area. I see on another thread the complete lack of accessible facilities. Really sad that we choose to live with these tragedies rather than attempt to help.

Ah they probably were I'm sure but drugs and poverty are rough stuff - makes otherwise good people do foolish things - nobody says they're going to be a petty criminal when they grow up
Pretty good bet they are close if they work at QC as a. Adult and are compelled to steal
I understand people live in poverty. Rent is high, food costs are outrageous, and many jobs don't pay enough to survive. Stealing from others is never the right thing to do and you will most likely get caught at some point. I just don't understamd all of the sympathy some have for drug users?? Nobody forces a person to go out and do heroin, meth, crack, or any of the other highly addictive drugs. This is a choice that people make of their own free will knowing what the consequences are. It is taught in schools at a very young age, we see it all over TV, and countless other places. Hell, in today's society many have had family members or friends that have been involved in drugs, gotten into trouble, or died from them. The point is they know exactly what can happen if they do the drugs....yet they will still do it. Maybe that's part of the problem. People feel sorry for them, make excuses for what they do, and let them off easy.
Sure but people make stupid choices about lots of things every day - doesn't fix the problem. people want to be productive in society - stuff happens though bad choices and circumstance that derails that effort - spending money to lock them up just makes that worse- now they're REALLY unemployable and we're all paying for that one way or the other. Would rather decriminalize and spend the money on treatment

Poor guy. Police probably asked his name and, upon hearing it, locked him up as a drunk. Look at that first name ----- say it and you too will sound drunk :>)
"Waiting to hear the reason why the woman crossed into the oncoming lane."
To get to the other side?
"Suicide at the Rt. 80 scenic overlook...."
Perhaps we might want to change the name from scenic....
I am so sorry. Will take a self-imposed 2-minute time out.
What would have happened if the police hadn't been in the right place at the right time to stop this guy? Who am I kidding, it probably happens on a daily basis. Is Bottle King responsible for monitoring the condition of customers who DRIVE to their business and then purchase more alcohol? I just love knowing my family and I have to share the roads with these reckless drunks.

SD - Trust me, this is the mildest thing he has ever done. He's no stranger to the police. If it had been someone else, they probably would have just told them to get down. They probably broke his chops because he gives them grief.

The courts should handle the recurring arrests, not the cops upping the ante. Not that any of that happened here. Sounds like this guy could be unruly even when climbing a street lamp.
Map show heroin deaths in Warren County in 2016.
http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/warren-county/index.ssf/2017/09/every_opioid_death_last_year_i.html#incart_river_index
That's interesting, frightening and misleading all at the same time. If there's any good new in this, it would appear that Mom and Dad are locking the medicine cabinet, most of these deaths look like street buys associated with Heroin abuse. Hate to say it this way, but the heroin crowd tends to burn itself out fairly quickly one way or the other. Fentanyl users will burn out even faster. Not really concerned about Heroin hooked Vietnam Vets anymore...for example.
My concern is our focus on the different potential issues here versus bundling all this problems into a single monolithic opioid issue looking for a single solution and a huge budget. Although Heroin overdoses are spiking dramatically, the synthetic opioid deaths are skyrocketing at even a much higher level. Often these two are linked but the chance of dying from synthetics is exponentially higher.
Fact is Heroin is bad bad juju. Synthetics are multiple times worse.
Why are we here? From my reading, it starts with American DRs prescribe more pain killers. It's not that more Americans are in more pain, it's that DRs are relieving more with drugs. Most agree this is a good thing. Then what follows is some medicine cabinet abuse by kids and a lot of parents get hooked. We seem to have a better handle on the cabinet aspect now. Meanwhile, Mexican Cartels figure out the heroin price demand curve, cheap supply, and how to price lower but make it up in volume. This expands the number of heroin users but also provides an alternative for medicine cabinet abuser parents looking for more or looking for cheaper high. The Mexicans not only expanded the traditional market, they opened new markets as an pain killer prescription alternative that's cheaper with more horsepower. Then we add the synthetics. Even more powerful high, cheap, untrustworthy and unsafe, these are just plain old killers. Might as well sniff glue.
Therefore, IMO, when you take apart the opioid crisis, the first target should be the synthetics, education to the masses on the incredible danger, find wherever they are cooked up and destroy them and the people associated. The second target is Mexico --- take out the poppies and the cartels. While this are both opioids, often connected, often interchangeable, they are different markets and customers and the attack on either will need to be different.
OK, the article and the fud to feed our fears. First it says: "A database of deaths involving heroin and fentanyl obtained by NJ Advance Media shows a dozen occurring in Phillipsburg — the county’s most populated town, and home of a new drug abuse and mental health outpatient facility that opened last summer." Heroin and Fentanyl. Nope, the map was opioids. Not sure how they made that editorial mistake. Most populated, most deaths, ok, we'll leave that Captain Obvious moment without conclusion alone (like maybe on a per capita basis, does Phillipsburg even have a higher rate than Hackettstown?) Second, and this is the insidious part, the way the article says "last summer" in September for a June opening somehow tangentially linking these deaths with the substance abuse facility to create something in the reader's mind. Gee, what could the journalist be thinking of creating here? Of course they leave out the same center operating in Glen Gardener since 2014.......which must have a track record by now. This is yellow journalism of an insidious nature.
Good post Calico, terrible stuff these opioids, and I hope we lazar focus on the root causes and solutions rather than loose connections between abuse facilities and overdoses without even fact checking the death rate on a per capita or other comparison factor.

Hmmm, the dog may have been a bit blue in the face before getting the Ox, but if it really did get that one, then Paul Bunyan mustn't be far behind!
I'm very glad the little doggie's OK. I feel badly for the people who lost their homes and possessions, especially during this time of the year and hope they're all in comfortable surroundings now.
I also hope the Firefighter that was treated is doing well now too. Several weeks ago a Firefighter in Stanhope succumbed to a heart attack during a training exercise:-(
The family pretty much lost everything and the Mom just delivered a baby tonight. There is a gofundme page floating around for anyone interested in helping. They need the cash to get new place and replace things.
Sorry I have to post this. When I was 10 we lost our house to a fire. It was the Williams and Hibler Lumber Yard fire. Its devastating to a family to start over. This woman just had her baby today and lost all her brand new baby items. please donate even if its a little bit. Its the Holidays! CAN YOU IMAGINE THIS HAPPENING TO YOU?

Phil D., that was the son of one of the beloved teachers at my children's school. Very sad. He was very young.
Tracy
Yes, that's definitely a real shame. As a firefighter, I'm sure he knew that he may be in danger at an actual fire, which is the point of having training exercises to begin with, so you're prepared for most eventualities and are able to quickly make adjustments and adapt as conditions change. I saw the black wreath on the front of the Stanhope Fire Station on Main St. and then later found out more details.
I'm sure that he wouldn't want his death to be in vain and I hope that both medical screening and training principals and practices are examined after they're sure of exactly what conditions lead to his passing so that everyone is able to learn and practice safely.
