Lung transplant
Has anyone had experience with lung transplants, either for themselves, family or friends?
I have many friends who have lung transplants. Most of them are female and have CF. The transplants saved their lives.
About 15 years ago a coworker had a double lung transplant and unfortunately the outcome was not good...
Some people do very good with transplants while others not so much. I wouldn't know the statistics on the success but I can tell you that the amount of Organs and Tissue that is being transplanted is on the rise.
People who would normally be on the list until the end of their life without being able to receive a transplant have new hope due to the rise in deaths from Overdoses.

Check out the Sharing network. It's an organ donation site. I haven't seen it, personally, but a friend of mine had a lung transplant, 30 years ago. He made it to age 78. Maybe they have information you could use. I hope things work out ok. Not sure what's going on, but your top post indicates trouble. I hope you, or whoever you're speaking on behalf of, is ok.
One of my relatives had undergone lung transplants. Now he is living a peaceful life.
Having angiogram Monday. If that looks good, transplant is next on list per doctor. Thank you for help and advice. Will surely need some additional guidance, info as things progress. I understand it is a long process.
Best wishes Dansker. The inspire network is a really good health community and one I've found helpful (www.inspire.com).
Our Prayers are with you Dansker. Be STRONG and THINK POSITIVE AND NEVER GIVE UP !!!
My prayers are with you and I'm sure will be answered...the cats need you Dansker.
Such a good person you are...
I am praying our lord will guide the surgeon hands through the process, Dansker, May he give you the strength to see you through the process also. May God bless you.
Prayers for you Dansker. Just don't let the grass grow under your feet. Lungs are not like failed kidneys. I had dialysis to keep me alive waiting for a transplant. Stay on top of things with the doctors. If they order tests, do them asap. Best to you.
If Karma can just work its magic here, they will find you a donor and you will have a successful operation.
For those who don't know Dankster, it's like Positve said- such a good person: heart of gold+fabulous sense of humor+spirited to put it mildly. One of the coolest people I've met in our town.
Wishing you positive thoughts all the way through your journey. Please keep us updated and if you need anything, you know where your HL family is. Never hesitate to reach out to us if there's anything we can co.
Thank you to everyone for prayers and well wishes. They worked! Dr could not believe how clean my heart and arteries were. Figure the Lord cleaned everything out for the next step. Could not respond right away as they went through my right wrist artery and I kept having bleeding issues if I moved wrist or fingers. No texting, writing, knit , crochet or pc keyboard till Friday pm. Almost lost my mind! Recheck on Tuesday, see specialist Oct 31, to determine feasibility of lung transplant or other surgical options. Heart is strong and I stay active, albeit slowly, so hoping. Prayers are welcome.
Dansker, prayers and best wishes. I hope the next step in the journey is the best it can be. Stay well and be strong!
So glad to hear that Dansker...looks like Rebecca was right, the good Karma you've created is coming right back at you.
So happy to hear this process is moving forward, Dankster!! You'll remain in my prayers and those of so many others, I know.
((((Hugs))))) and positive energy to get through all the necessary steps along the way.
Just catching up on HL threads. Lots of prayers and good wishes coming your way, Dansker!
I thank you all for prayers and best wishes. I will hold them close to my heart on this journey, whichever way it goes.
Dansker, Consider joining Transplant Survivors. There are a lot of folks with many different types of transplants talking about the good things and some of the not so good things that we need to be aware. I'm 23 years out with a kidney. Yes I have some issues, but I'm alive and that is the good thing. Nothing I can't handle. After Transplant I was able to travel to many countries including, Australia, Japan, Portugal, Spain, France, England, and even Pakistan. No problems anywhere. Transplant isn't a cure, but it did give me a great quality of life. Dialysis was not fun.
Thank you for best wishes! Appointment is Monday. Very appropriate if I get approval to start the process on Halloween, as my grandson figures I already have Darth Vader eyes (cataract lenses), Darth Vader ears (hearing aids) and can maybe add lungs. Gotta stay on the good side of the Force though!
Just got to read this thread. Good luck Dansker. You are an amazing human being . We are all behind you. Thinking positive thoughts and prayers.
Dansker, Sending positive thoughts your way that All goes well for you. Please update the HL family; we all care and will be thinking about you.
Are you a candidate for a lung transplant?
The lung transplant program at the Penn Transplant Institute performs lung transplantation for patients with advanced lung diseases, such as emphysema (COPD), cystic fibrosis, pulmonary vascular diseases, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension, as well as many less common lung diseases.
Criteria for lung transplantation varies from one transplant center to another. At Penn Medicine, patients are considered for transplant if they:
•Have advanced or end stage disease limited to the lungs and treatable with transplantation
•Do not have cancer
•Have a lung disease severely impairing quality of life
•Are under the age of 75
•Are in general good health other than their lung disease

What to Expect From the Lung Transplant Team
transplant lung team
Our first goal is to determine the best treatment option for your lung disease. This may include medical management without surgery. If transplant is recommended, we perform evaluation testing quickly and comfortably in the outpatient setting. This usually takes place over four consecutive days. You can expect that your care will be designed based on your specific needs and goals. We work closely with your health care providers at home to ensure your comfort, confidence and safety.

Thank you, Ms Fishy. I am seeing a specialist tomorrow that my cardiologist has worked with. I will surely follow up on your leads also. I would really like to be able to walk more than 10 steps without gasping for air, and that's with oxygen 24/7, nebulizer every 3-4 hours. Can think of a whole lot of other things I would rather do with that time!
Update : I saw specialist on Monday. Had new lung function tests and am going for a new CT scan on Oct 7. Have to get the oral pred down to 10 mg or less, so have started inhaled steroids which should make the tapering faster and easier. It should also help with the shortness of breath issues as testing showed the albuterol is really not helping much any more. Am getting actively back into pulmonary rehab, which I had cut back on in order to take care of my garden. The body is limited as to how much physical work it will do...mind is willing but that's not quite enough. Go back to doctor on Nov 30. Baby steps are good! Thank you for all your encouragement , advice and prayers!
Sounds really good Dansker and like you said baby steps.... Stay strong and continued prayers :-)
Was finally strong enough after January relapse to reschedule first consultation at Penn Transplant Institute. Going next Tueday, March14 at 2. Pray for no snow or icy roads and a good outcome so I can continue to the next stage of consults. Breathing is definitely a good thing! Thank you in advance for prayers and best wishes!
Please let us know how you are - we are all keeping you in our thoughts and prayers and hope this returns you to health quickly
If you ever need someone to drive you just holler! And my car can get through any winter weather. But even if it's nice out... a friend helped me with some of my medical appts when I needed it, and I would be happy to take you.
Appointment at Penn Institute moved to March 21, due to snowmaggedon. They are trying to come up with something earlier.
I'm sorry to hear that Dansker. Take it easy tomorrow and don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything.
bumping up. Had consult with Penn Transplant this past Tuesday, 21. All is moving very fast. I had heard 6 to 8 weeks for eval date, but I'm going in April 10, 11, 13, and 14. Things were going downhill rather quickly. So am scrambling to get assorted tests, bloodwork, vaccines done before then. Prayers and happy thoughts are welcome. Also , prayers that I can lie on my stomach for 10 minutes tomorrow for virtual colonoscopy (can't have any sedation). Thanking you in advance.
Dansker, Sending heartfelt thoughts and Prayers your way for excellent outcomes in all that you face on your way to Good Health.
Dansker, I will be praying for your situation and all the doctors, nurses and technicians. taking care of you.
Dankser - I've met your old neighbor as well as you in person. I know exactly where you're coming from and wish you nothing but the best for your future health.
Thinking of you during your eval appts, Dankster, and praying and praying... and wishing you lots of patience in dealing with all the medical tests. I imagine it can't be easy. ((Hugs))
Up-date. Evaluation testing is done, at least for now. Attending physicain for barium swallow said all was good. Physician for 2nd angiogram said all was clean and good. Went through neck this time, so grandson says I am now officially a vampire! Got through the 6 min walk. Had a few other strength tests. All my gardening has paid off. I am stronger than the average healthy 68 year old. Everything's in good shape except the lungs, which are very handy to have. Waiting for more test results, but so far, I am sick enough to need transplant and strong enough to live through it. Will let you know. Thank you for prayers and good wishes.
On the list for bilateral lung transplant as of yesterday! Having diaphragm test this Tuesday to maybe open other lung options. Now just have to wait for a match.
Congrats! It's motorcycle weather so hopefully you won't have to wait long. Stay strong
Good luck on your test Tuesday. Sending prayers your way for a quick response on a match.
Positive thoughts and Prayers for a perfect match are streaming your way Dansker!!
Am temporarily off list. Too sick right now. No worries. Just have to get prednisone down and strength up and I will slide right into place.
Ok Dansker, get well and rest up. You are in my prayers. Thanks for the update.
Best wishes on getting back on the list. I hope the prednisone is not to heavy and you get some energy from the miracle of this incredible pharma. May you bounce back, get on that list, get the transplant and dance by the light of the moon.
God speed.
You will be in my daily prayers and thoughts, Dansker...Praying that this all will soon be behind you.
Please see the post I just added on the forum regarding my mom, Dansker (Ingrid). Really in need of prayers, positive energy, and any support you can offer
