You may want to try a chiropractor. The one I go to fixed it when I had scaitica. Now I go monthly for maintenance.

Dr. Scott Meyer or Dr John Knightly at Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists in Morristown. The best there is!!!

This is going to sound strange, but try sit ups. It usually help realign your posture and relieves sciatic nerve pain. Also be careful that you aren't mistaking sciatic pain for kidney pain. Hope you get relief soon!

Not sure if you could mistake Kidney pain for sciatic pain, as sciatic pain is pain that shoots down your leg, especially when compressing the abdominal muscles. I went to the Orthopedic Center of New Jersey, in Hackettstown, and had Dr. Castro check me out.

I had a couple of MRI's and decided that surgery was not urgent at this time, so I was prescribed physical therapy. Physical therapy has really helped out and most days now the sciatic pain is gone.

As far as sit ups, I was told by the physical therapist to limit those, as it compresses he spine in the exact place you don't want to compress the spine. The exercises I do are opposite doing sit-ups, where I flex my back the other direction. That definitely has helped me best.

I also use this when it's real bad and it has helped out tremendously:

Sorry, it was the Orthopedic Institute of New Jersey, not Orthopedic Center. And again, if they determine that surgery is not urgent (dependent via an MRI on the extent and location of the compressed nerve/s, and whether or not the spinal canal is compromised too much), I highly recommend physical therapy.

Thank you all. Sadly, Meyer, Knightly and Chapple are not in my insurance. I called and the first available appointment for Castro at any location is next Friday. I can't wait that long. I made an appointment with Dr. Murphy at Skylands Orthopaedic. I will also try the stretcher Rich, thanks. I have been doing some yoga stretches but nothing is helping. I know I have some herniated discs, so I am thinking one is pushing on the nerve at this point, can't sit for more than 5 mins, can't stand longer than 15. The struggle is real, lol.

townie22, the yoga pose that work best for me is the "Cobra" pose. For me, the sciatic pain is on the left side. When it is bad, the pain shoots all the way down to above the ankle, but now when it acts up, it goes down to behind the knee or just below. I also have herniated discs, and bone spurs that narrow the canal that the nerve travels through. Knowing where the pain actually originates from really helps the physical therapist direct the treatment.

I had sciatic pain for years, but it would come and go, lasting only several days at a time. It was only when, earlier this year, the pain came and stayed for well over a month and was really interrupting my life. That is when I sought out the spinal doctor and started physical therapy (2 or 3 months ago). Like I said, it really helped me and I hope the same for you. Good luck!

I have three herniated discs that cause severe sciatic pain (and still does occasionally). The only relief I found was from a chiropractor. I was pain free in less than 10 days. I suffered for a very long time (close to a year) and sought numerous avenues to relieve my pain. Would never consider spinal surgery. Ever. Strengthen your core, too, once you're able to. That helps. As far as PT, it does help, but not by itself and not fast.

A good chiropractor can work wonders with sciatica. I'm not sure whether Dr. Jeffrey Culbert on Schooley's Mountain Road takes your particular insurance, but he's great. I've gone to him for years.

My cardiologist gave me a referral to a Dr. Brian Beyrl at Atlantic Neurosurgical ....

My sciatica finally eased up after 2 months with crutches and canes. Suffering severely, as you well know.

I get it left side, right side. Never both at the same time, but I usually get it from bending sideways while trying to move or lift something.

I had been to Dr's for cortisone shots years ago.

Inversion table works for me ( 3 herniated discs and one fragmented ) ..auto accident 17 yrs ago....never ever have surgery unless you have exhausted all other options.
There are muscles on either side of your spine, tone them with leg exercises'.

Good Luck !

Castro is a moron!! He told me there was nothing wrong with my back. 6 months later I had a discectomy and three bone fusion and four bone fusion in my neck! Dr. Steven Dorsky saved my life!!!

100% Recommend Dr Paul Vessa. He saved my life. I had degenerated disc disease at 28. Constant sciatica and chronic pain. I walked in his office, he looked at my MRI and knew exactly what my daily symptoms were. Amazing doctor and staff. He's worth the trip to Bridgewater. If you can't go to him, then Dr Deehan in Hackettstown is also fantastic! Best of luck to you.
