The beach is nice, the town a dump. The millions of dollars tossed away over the past 20 years we could of knocked down all the crumbling houses and turn it into a real beach town, maybe 55 and over communities(no burden on schools, and a tax base)but all the money went to the casino's and never to the town itself.Look at it now..what a shame.

I don't see it as people with half-empty glasses. I see it as people with pockets half-empty and are rightfully making their disdain for taxpayer-funded financial disasters known.

Personally, I've never once seen my taxes go down due to a taxpayer investment in a private enterprise so the anger over the failure in AC is well warranted.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in NJ, Christie sets record for most rating cuts ever as NJ gets flushed down Christie's economic policies drain: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-09-11/christie-gets-record-eighth-rating-cut-on-pension-moves.html

Naw, just woke now to a new day. Wouldn't it be ironic if a future Democratic Governor had to make such cuts as a last resort? Anyone with half a brain sees the spending problem growing exponentially. In private lives, such behavior leads to bankruptcy...

Re: Where is Christie?

Apparently in public coffers, Christie's financial behavior leads to bankruptcy too. It's not just this recent move to re-engineer the pensions and health plans; economically Christie's policies have kept the state back in the turnaround race when compared to state's where government economic policies are not lame.

Fact is he could have seen this one coming for years but kept "blue skying" his budget year after year making revenue forecasts that only his staff (since he knows nothing) believed. Year after year.

Fact is his policies have not created new jobs, increased income or anything economically equal to the national average, surrounding states, much less with states with strong economic leaders.

Sure he didn't create the pension and health care problems, he just papered over them with pie-in-the-sky revenue forecasts. And he has not affected the NJ economy positively in any other manner as well. He has increase taxes for most using smoke and mirror property tax tricks, he has lowered taxes on the upper tier, and dares to claim to be holding the line on taxes. The only line he held was against business where we rate 50th in taxes (defined as highest.....) Our foreclosures were legendary amongst the states while our home prices plummeted faster than most states. Our poverty rate is at a 50-year high. Now, up against his own fiscal wall of a bad revenue forecast, getting caught for once again shorting the state's pension responsibilities as a one time stop gap measure to save the budget, suddenly when his revenue falls short for another year, he punts to his faithful "state workers suck" mantra for the fix. Each time he gets in a pinch, he rolls out a last-gasp fix, and then rolls ahead to the next blue sky budget.

So yes, we must enact pension reform but CLEARLY that does not fix the problem. It just makes his admirers say "Atta boy" until about June of 2015 when once again.......... It is NOT the FIX for what ails NJ economically. Christie does not have a clue what to do there.

Because that won't change that fact that economically, Christie's policies are a total failure.

From the Mercatus Center 1/2014 (and it hasn't gotten better)

Cash Solvency --- NJ is number 36
Budget Solvency --- 50!
Long Run Solvency ---- 50!
Service Level Solvency ---- 39 (ability to get local services)
State Fiscal Condition Index ---- 50

As of August, BusinessInsider places us 36 for economic growth citing unemployment change of 1.8% and income change of .8%.

Forbes puts us at 32 for Best States for Business and Careers with costs being the culprit while QOL is number 3 in the nation.

Basically, economically, NJ is NUMBER ONE in the bottom tier of the 50 states. Not quite in the bottom ten worst states, but just hovering above.

However, a bright note. For the New Economy, NJ is number 10 by Forbes so feel safe, computer, broadband networking and even telephone geeks.

Point is it's not just the pensions, it's not just this current budget disaster, it's Chris Christie ------ economically the guy is a dud, has been, and I am pretty sure he always will be.

mistergoogle, right on the money! (no pun intended)

Governor Blame-it-all-on-public-employees sole interest at this point is positioning himself for the 2016 presidential race, and anyone who believes otherwise is blind. He's selling NJ down the river with his "business tax incentives" that fail to create jobs and have helped lead to yet another downgrading of NJ's credit rating.

And now he thinks the solution to Atlantic City's economic disaster is...ready for this? More tax incentives!

He signs agreements to repay debts, and then welshes on them. How did he get through law school without passing Contract Law 101?

Our roads and bridges are crumbling, and he refuses to even consider the only intelligent way to replenish the Transportation Trust Fund by increasing the gasoline tax. After all, Presidential Candidate Christie wants to be able to run on the "I never increased taxes in NJ" platform.

I hope for the sake of his family that Mary Pat balances the checkbook and not him!!

Re: Where is Christie?

I hate to say it JG, but we should be offering tax incentives to business. We need revenue (jobs) and rate-ables (buildings and houses) to slow our speed circling the drain. The problem is he is "deal making" onesy twosey like a carnival huckster to stop individual businesses from leaving. If I ran a company still, I would be lining up at his door asking WIFM gov? I'm leavin on a jet plane, what will you give me?

To gain jobs and rate-ables, we need tax incentive programs to attract new business (there's a foreign concept), like NY's (where these companies were sprinting off to), as well as retain what's left. Having the highest business taxes combined with complex regulation is just not going to do it.

To gain enough revenue to stem our stink-hole of a state budget, we need not only to have pension (including double dipping) and health care reform for public workers, we need to make our state tax system fair. Under Christie, the bottom 20% pay over 11% in taxes, the top 20% pay 7%. That is blatantly unfair even to flat tax advocates. Since 2009, only the top 1% have seen their taxes actually drop. Have you?

It will take both cuts and increases to bring this thing in line especially if we have to keep doling out tax breaks to businesses to keep them out of New York, PA, and Delaware. And we need marketable programs, not back room deals, to establish NJ as the best place to do business. We have the best business people, the best workers, now we just need a governor with a financial head on his shoulders versus a number-nuts with his head where the sun don't shine.

There are many factors that companies need to look at that make it cost prohibitive,housing/cost of living, transportation, etc. Don't be fooled by New York States commercials about all these companies relocating there. This is a problem for all politicians and it is because we have "career" politicians. None of them are where they are supposed to be, regardless of party affiliation. The President on down to Sate level are always campaigning for their next election as opposed to actually working.

Coming up to the past major election cycle, I am guessing the Pres. spent at least 9 months outside of DC doing nothing than pushing his stump. Same with the Pres before him also. Not a political party thing, but a gross negligence thing by all involved

Andy - Anyone who ever met you would never question your honestly for a second. No need to have to explain for a microsecond.

Mr G - No, that crude photoshop attempt isn't it. Sure the synchronicity of being fixated on fleece is initial impetus, but the occupation of commercial spokesperson is the real nexus. Scrunchy has all sorts of fun with the kids but he doesn't actually manufacture anything himself. Christie has talked up lots of sweet tasting ideas and implemented next to nothing. COAH is still there, Abbot essentially in place, school mandates breaking the bank, even the crowning pension compromise achievement was weak, yet he's out of money to pay for roads while turning down education money in order to borrow instead and be bankrupted by the interest payments. Something as bad as his promise to clean up car insurance doesn't even seem mentionable compared to all the rest.

Still Scrunchy leads the parade, and sells sugar and HFC to kids. It's all Christie fun and games and millions fundraising for the political party. Just like his tenure as US Attorney, he's stumping all the time and waiting for his staff to do all the work then hold a press conference to get the glory. Only problem is his people don't have any solutions, they're making it even worse.

Andy has got it right - it's no weight joke, it's about absenteeism. There's work to do and what work is done is pretty poor at that.

Christie has spoken his opinion on "gifting" numerous times.

As a Morris County official, Christie stopped county officials from accepting gifts from people and firms doing business with the county.

Now he uses the "friends and family" exception to excuse the Dallas shindig.

He also appoints Port Authority management.

Christie endorsed a deal between the Port Authority and Legends Hospitality LLC which is partly owned by Jerry Jones; Dallas Cowboys organization.

One thing about the Hall of Fame, the museum recognizes things that guys did who are not in the hall --- guys like Rose, Bonds, etc.

Even an Alex Ochoa bat is in there --- he did have his moments.

But the Hall of Fame plaques are sacred. Heck, I'll move this to the MLB site but first, Ted Williams was a Republican ... I remember him campaigning for Reagan and Bush --- the "liberal" media did not keep him out.

By the way, I was asked just recently by someone I've known for over 40 years, if I have a Hall of Fame vote. Even though I covered Phillies games regularly in the 70s I never traveled with them and I've been told a lot of guys got a vote by being sports editors of dailies ... which I was ... but I never pursued it.

I did have a Heisman Trophy vote, even though I only went to one or two college games a year, did mostly the high schools and the Eagles when they were home on Sundays.

Re: Where is Christie?

OK, Chris attended Green Bay game with orange sweater. According to Daily Record:

"Jones has referred to Christie as his team’s “mojo” because Dallas has won the last five games Christie has attended wearing the orange sweater for good luck."
I heard he actually said Morejo, but hey, that's just me.

Christie picked 38-28 Dallas "“Well, as confident as you can be being on the road and (facing) a team that’s undefeated at home,” Christie told The Associated Press before the game, which the Packers won 26-21. “But I feel pretty good. The team’s played well, and it’s going to be a good day.”

A hug and a handshake later, he was off to the box.

mistergoogle mistergoogle

A few things that have been discussed regarding shortages of funding for social security benefits and how to keep the system solvent long term ...

* Creating more jobs for the elderly.

* A means test, with reduced benefits for the wealthy.

* Taxing of benefits for the wealthy.

* Restraints on wasteful health-care procedures.

* Authorization for part of our taxes to be shifted to personal retirement accounts.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Jan '15

Not sure what this has to do with "where's Christie" or even his state of the union since it is not a NJ state issue but.........

* Creating more jobs for the elderly.
Say wha? I mean not a bad thing, but what does it have to do with keeping SS solvent. Of course, if we follow some of your other ideas, we may have more old folks entering the work force ........

* A means test, with reduced benefits for the wealthy.
* Taxing of benefits for the wealthy.
I agree with means testing, to a point. I mean it is your money, you put it in. So I can see means testing reducing and/or delaying the payout but there has to be a reasonable expectation that you might, and I say might, like if you live forever, that you will at least get some of your money back.......

* Restraints on wasteful health-care procedures.
Slippery slope, but I agree, but has nothing to do with SS. This is Medicare.

* Authorization for part of our taxes to be shifted to personal retirement accounts
NOPE. SS was never meant to be more than a safety net. It was not meant to be a retirement account. It is a personal bank account of the last recourse, not a profit center one should risk. Letting people gamble with their safety net is as risky as trapeze without a net. Perhaps sexy, perhaps some people feel they deserve to risk their money, and I'm sure everyone feels they can do better than special T-bills, but I feel no one should be risking their, and our, safety net. Remember, if they risk and fail, it's not just they who suffer. We either leave them in the cold or cover their losses.

Everyone's retirement portfolio should be a diversified blend of risk and reward. SS is the lowest risk element; live with it.

Other ideas:
* Reduce Fraud (especially Medicare)
* Privatization (NOPE, feel the same way as shifts to personal accounts)
* Adjusting payouts and minimum age payout dates for younger participants (the biggee)
* Change COLA formula to "chained CPI." (a minor change)
* Raise the SS tax cap currently capped at incomes of around $107K. (a no brainer)
* Include excluded workers (state and local govt, ministers, etc.) in the system (another no brainer)
* Improved education (this is a weird one but since many people think SS IS their retirement program and therefore don't build another, we need to change this stupid idea and explain the mindset that people can retire on the safety net. End result might be more people making more money, retiring later, and even means testing out of the system ---- yeah, it's a weird one but minimum benefit of getting people to understand you can't live well off SS would be beneficial.

Remember, Social Security needs help but is not broken. The system is solvent until 2033 and I think last year did not run a deficit. The system also funds a huge percentage of our national debt, the largest single holder at about 16%, next is the Fed at 12% and then --- China 8%, Japan 7%. Remember the lottery in the 70's? They had two scratch offs....a dollar each, paid at least two dollars or more for a win. Now there is 50 different scratch offs..ranging up to $30 each. 10 different paper games all paying less each year. Add that to the average property taxes of 6-8k a year. Where the heck does it all go!!?? Tennessee property taxes are literally a tenth of N.J. They have police, schools etc., also.

Chris apparently thought Jersey was New Jersey and recently travelled to England to find out while snagging some freebies and looking Presidential.

There, in London, he mooched into a soccer game where fan's cheered him on. According to MSNBC: "As he left the stadium amid a throng of somewhat inebriated football fans, the scrum of reporters and cameras drummed up some interest in the man at the center. “Who are you? Who are you?” a cluster of young men started chanting around him."

Christie vowed to reimburse the team for the tickets. Honest.

Later Chris stopped in London for some word waffles on the Measels debate calling for "balance" between parental wishes and governmental controls and then saying whattaya crazy --- get the vaccine. Of course the initial comments were targeted to boost NJ/English pharmacutical trade as Christie poohed poohed vaccines while touring a MedImmune laboratory that produces, guess what, vaccines. Savvy negotiator no doubt employing the reverse pysch sales strategy.

He then went on to slam our President in front of foreigners, a time honored custom, over the topic of trade negotiations and negotiating in general. Nothing like airing the dirty laundry in front of strangers to make you look like a stand-up guy.

Just before his free dinner by David Cameron, Chris said that Cameron was a good guy for taking many of the austerity measures that Chris has bequeathed to the residents of NJ who don't go to free games and get free meals in London.

Next we'll go round the world with Chris as the NY Times highlights the lavish freebies he took after changing the law to allow foreign governments to lavish luxury trips and accommodations.

You just can't make this stuff up.

I just love it when they cry "the media is all noise." “There’s only one Chris Christie, everybody, and this is it,” the 52-year-old Garden State governor said Monday night." Well, he got that right.

Budget Update:

Chris started February by hitting the floor sitting: http://gawker.com/imagine-chris-christie-falling-out-of-a-chair-forever-1683091667. Of course, he was out of NJ, in Philli, doing some radio.

Then, after declaring "mission accomplished" over the pension four years ago, he was governor-slapped for $1.6B by a judge who said: "not quite accomplished spanky" as he was ordered to pay the payments he promised to pay but pilfered. Christie quickly reacted in his budget address by rolling out the same old plan that he gutted before stating, it's all cool, me and the NJEA got a deal. The NJEA immediately said "not quite accomplished spanky......."

Now Chris will return to the town meetings starting tommorrow taking time from the national stage to craft some tasty tidbits for those national stage haters gotta hate soundbyte lovers. Well, at least he's in NJ making national news versus being in IOWA making NJ news.

Krispy Kreme told the states district attorney to settle out of court for 250 million less than 3% of what the state originally wanted

TRENTON -- While the snow continues to pile up this winter, and memories of last year's heavy accumulations still haven't melted away, the Fiscal 2016 budget unveiled by Gov. Chris Christie last week cuts snow removal funding for the coming winter in half.

Highlights of the governors' $33.8 billion proposed spending plan for Fiscal 2016 include a $44 million reduction in "winter operations/snow removal," a 49.3 percent reduction from the current fiscal year.

So if we think there are problems this winter - just wait till the next one.

5catmom 5catmom

That works perfectly with the Christie mantra of only announcing budgetary shortfalls in the last quarter so that it's a total emergency and no one has time to ask, "how the frack did we wind up with this mess."

Probably will take credit for lower cost, more efficient snow removal for nine months until the hammer comes down, the sky is falling (literally), and we need an emergency funding source with no time to look back and see where Chris screwed up again.

Last night, Friday 3/7/2015, Chris dined at Donald's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla. where he keynoted some Repubs. Today he's off to Iowa spreading his manure at an agricultural summit. Can you say "Soooooie."

Mr. G. the "pensions" were underfunded and overcompensating from day one...

Yes they were Ijay. Then Christie claimed "mission accomplished" and he would pour $2.4B into the fund. He continued this claim in NJ and across the land for a long, long time. Then he stole the money back in 2014 to fix his failed budget, failed because he miscalculated blue sky revenues while his programs to fix NJ's economy faired much worse than other states.

Now unfortunately his time is winding down. Unfortunate since it's way too early for him to depart the clown car; we have only just begun to laugh. I guess the good news is we will have room for two more clowns :>)

Why? Well some Sandy folks even came to Iowa to heckle the gov who responded: ""I think you understand, I'll deal with you here the same way as I deal with you in New Jersey," Christie warned, half-jokingly."

I would like to know why before Gov. Krispy Kreme came into a office the state was paying about $150 million that's about the average a state would pay Wall Street to handle pensions and now the state is paying over $600 million to Krispy Kreme's friends on Wall Street

Yesterday Chris was actually in NJ at a townhall defending his $228M deal versus the $8.9M on the courtroom table. Chris said: "it's actually a really nice settlement and they'd have to say something nice about me." Later he went Sargent Shultz on them and said: "The attorney general makes the decision. I don’t interfere with the attorney general." Apparently our NJ top dog knows nothing, does nothing, and influences nothing in his own administration as he has noted many, many times in the past. Bridge, what bridge?

But the important part was his disclosure: ""They're going to have to clean up everything no matter what it costs, and we're going to get the $225 million on top of it," Christie said. "If you read The New York Times you'd never know this." Christie stressed: "They have to fix everything that they polluted to state standards and there is no cap on what they have to pay.""

Yes he is right that the deal details have not be disclosed; apparently we too know nothing. But we do know that the $228M is actually $180M post legal fees. We also know that the court case called for a full clean up; the "clean up" Chris says is "nice" is a simple capping leaving all the crap where it lies. Can you say 1,000 years of drip, drip, drip.....

Speaking of lieing, so what is the deal Chris. Or do you really know nothing there too?

Hillary isn't lieing, yet, on this one. She is Clintonian foot dragging. After waiting as long as she could, instead of getting an independent review, she said "i've looked myself and here are the ones I say are of state." Yeah right. Now she waits to see if it dies down or whether she has to do what she should have done all along. Typical Clintonian delay strategy and most disappointing.

Not only has Krispy Kreme has been busy, busy, busy but his buddies has created his Super Pac, America Leads which, while formed earlier, was just announced a few days ago. It's lead by Phil Cox from Christie's RGA days. According to NBC News "Cox helped lead the RGA....." OK, I really couldn't have said that better (think about it).

Remember, Super Pacs are third party unlimited fund machines that do their own thangs. Kind of like political pit bulls which ought to be real funny given the bar raised by bully boy.

Mar '15

If anyone wondered why Sampson announced his retirement and why the firm, a firm he helped found, changed its name then you can be sure this is why.

Until they come down we won't know who and what is in the indictments but the best educated guess is that the whole rotten Christie administration, a government for sale that has plundered New Jersey and driven it into fiscal chaos, will be coming down and one hopes that includes the lout in the governor's seat.

Even if Christie is not among the indicted it will be the end of his campaign for president and may indeed present the New Jersey legislature with grounds for impeachment. One hopes federal housing is in the governor's future -- at Alenwood, Pa. but even if not him a lot of people around him are going to go to prison and they will belong there.

vous
Apr '15

Finally. My earnest hope is that they all go to jail, including our esteemed governor. To condone the criminal activity that went on around him by claiming not to know what was going on with his staff is disingenuous at best. Perhaps he doesn't understand that he's supposed to know what's going on (and I'm willing to bet he did) and that the buck stops with him? I am especially looking forward to seeing Bridget Kelly get the book thrown at her - what a despicable excuse for a public servant, which I suppose could apply to all of them, now that I think about it .Ms. Kelly, meanwhile, has been publicly silent for 15 months. But in a rare statement in May, her lawyer alluded to a wider network involved. “Anyone who thinks they are going to rewrite history and make Ms. Kelly a scapegoat,” he wrote, “is gravely mistaken.”

vous
Apr '15

Jail for Christie? Don't make me laugh and there are a lot of people in Trenton that should go first by a long shot:

1) The double dippers
2) Legislators that do not represent the people in a broad sense of NJ but rather a subset represented by powerful unions and special interest groups

I know where Chris Christie isn't going to be in Tennessee at the NRA convention Christie and Paul are the only Republican presidential candidates that were not invited to speak at the convention

Or " http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/05/13/chris-christie-buys-the-iraq-line/?_r=0\" I think that's because he had extra cash after selling NJ a bridgegate.

Of course pandering in Massachusetts is worth.....nothing. "Chris Christie defends Tom Brady" http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/12/politics/chris-christie-tom-brady-deflategate/

Next up, we now have Christie's grocery bills which have shrunk by more than the 85lbs he has lost over the past two years. He was spending over $1,000 per spree mostly at Wegmans. Well, Chris has been eating out a lot, I mean out of state that is. In 2009, NJ state police spent $22K to protect Chris on trips. Last year --- just under $500,000.00, a tad of an increase. Keep paying those taxes, man's on the move.
