Budding relationship between Hackettstown, Centenary will influence downtown

The town and Centenary College officials hope a budding relationship with one another leads to a revitalized downtown business district.

The union hasn't always been rosy. But it has potential, for example, to meet housing needs for college students and help merchants land a larger share of the $8.1 million students spend each year on consumer goods and services, excluding groceries.

Town and college officials plan to meet Monday to compare the town's plans with those of the college and find common ground, Mayor Michael Lavery said. He doesn't see the recession slowing revitalization efforts.
