Hackettstown wants Centenary on Main Street

Centenary College students were a regular sight downtown when Achieve Fitness served as the college gym during the renovation of Centenary's gym in 2006.

Town officials hope to re-create that foot traffic by encouraging Centenary to open some operations downtown. The town's new revitalization committee recently identified finding redevelopment opportunities for Centenary on Main Street as its top priority.

"Of all of the work that we plan to do -- including recruiting new stores, making our downtown more walkable and helping existing merchants to do better -- we all agreed that our top priority should be to make Centenary College more of a presence on Main Street," committee member Thomas Marshall said.

A basic planning principle is having people live on Main Street to support the stores, Mayor Michael Lavery said. Opening student housing downtown would add a new customer base for Main Street stores, he said
