Five orphaned kids, a future of debt and doubt

Frightened, mostly. But also hurt, sad and confused. A very young family, just orphaned, faces a grim and uncertain future.

Their father, Thomas Knudsen, 54, was killed in a bizarre accident three weeks ago, caught between the door and the rear panel of his car as it rolled into the side of a utility shed outside a church near his Hackettstown home.

Their mother, Sherri, died of liver disease in 2003. She was only 40.

Left behind are Courtney, 12; Darren, 13; Alicia, 18; Thomas Jr., 24; and Belinda, 25.

Left behind, too, a ton of debt and legal problems these young people now face, none of it their doing -- but now their responsibility.
