Vintner's Circle Uncorks Expansion Plan

Winemaking shop looks to grow this year after a law establishes a license for the industry

Armed with a freshly minted license from the state, Vintner's Circle Winemaking Shops plans to open a case of new locations this year. David Schmeltzle, president of the Hackettstown company, used last week's New York/New Jersey Franchise Expo in the Meadowlands Exposition Center to begin recruiting franchisees.

"I think there is a lot of opportunity for this type of business in New Jersey," says Schmeltzle.

Winemaking shops are a cottage industry in the state, which has about 20 such facilities. The shops are not attached to vineyards and get their supplies from wine grape growers around the world. Customers keep what they bottle or give it away as gifts.
