Hackettstown council weighs new downtown restrictions

The town council on Monday is to vote on an ordinance that would narrow the kinds of businesses permitted on Main Street.

Specifically, tattoo and massage parlors, nail salons, check-cashing facilities, dance halls, escort services and drug paraphernalia shops would have to get special permission to open in the business district.

The ordinance has drawn fire from some business owners and residents, who say the council is anti-capitalism. Mayor Michael Lavery, on the other hand, argues that the council should decide what is and isn't allowed to move into the downtown.
