Hackettstown rental inspection program on chopping blockMarch 31, 2008 at 8:06 am A controversial program that allows town officials to inspect rentals to crack down on overcrowding is back up for debate. Council has introduced an ordinance to repeal the program. Councilman Paul Wallace, who has long opposed the program, recommended the move at last week's council meeting. Wallace said he'd prefer better enforcement of the town's construction and fire codes with heavy fines if residential overcrowding, also known as stacking, is found. Wallace did not return calls for comment on this story. Councilwoman Maria DiGiovanni said council is split on repealing the program, known as the landlord registration and inspection bureau. Landlords are charged $120 per rental to support the program.
