School District pitches online classes to school officials

A handful of officials from northern New Jersey schools gathered in the Hackettstown High School library today for a sales pitch on the Virtual High School program -- a series of online courses offering instruction students might otherwise not be able to find in their own high school.

Districts will have to consider such initiatives if the suggestions of a 2004 U.S. Department of Education report are to be followed. Among the recommendations in the report, titled "Toward a New Golden Age in American Education," is more support for e-learning and virtual schools.
