Budget could prevent Hackettstown from filling police ranks

Citing concerns about police officer and resident safety, town police Chief Leonard Kunz and the officers union asked town council Monday to reconsider leaving two police vacancies unfilled.

Mayor Michael Lavery and other town council members said a grim forecast for next year's municipal budget is a major reason the town may not hire two people to fill the spots left by retiring officers.

"Clearly we're heading for an economic challenge we have not seen before," Kunz told council, stressing the need for the replacements to fill out roster duties and keep up police services. "We're averaging three officers to a shift."
