Used to be the child needed to turn 5 before the end of Oct in the year you want them to start K. For some kids with Sept/Oct birthdays some parents would choose to start them a year later, depending on readiness.

Are you looking for kindergarten or the towns new public prekindergarten program?

Cut off date for most towns in New Jersey is October 1st. Child must be 5 on or before October 1st to be admitted to Kindergarten, or child must be 6 on or before October 1st to be admitted to 1st grade.

Spoken from experience as the parent of a kid born on October 2nd.
