2018 NFL Season

It's cut down day. Let's see who stays and who goes on the rosters.

The playoff rematch of the Falcons and Eagles will kick off the season Thursday night. Doug Pederson says the public won't know until 90 minutes before kick-off whether Wentz or Foles will start. Please, please, please football gods.....let Ginger Jesus be ready!!!! LOL

It's a game for neanderthals and criminals. Biggest bummer about the end of summer is now we have to deal with all the football idiots and their "fantasy" teams. My favorite is the people that talk like they are on their favorite teams roster. Beyond pathetic.

NFL Football was Great pre-1980's expansion. Now, as in other pro sports, they have way too many players ruining the sport by dilution. 70-80% of the NFL couldn't make the Canadian or Mexican football leagues back then.

Pro baseball has never recovered from their strike, but it will come back once the people die who lived through it.

Then again we're Americans, we forgive Professional Talkers i.e. politicians, media and lawyers for mis-speaking, mediocre athletes for continually terrible performances, and of course the weathermen who bat way less than .500 on their forecasts.

The libs are winning this one too. They found that by politicizing past times, they can get fans to give up. Heck, they are even saturating home and garden tv with little political digs, in no time they'll be just like espn.

Used to be Religion, then it was sports, and now politics is the opium of the masses.

Wise up! take your time and money elsewhere.

The NFL is a complete joke. If you watch it then you also must watch pro wrestling, it's on the same level. The NFL in the 70's-early 90s were the golden years. What you have basically supports gambling and the criminal element we call players.

So sad to hear people talk football like it matters. Even worse is a constant push from parents to get their kids in line for a concussion by some overzealous fanatical armchair coaches. Such ghetto game now.

I'd say the weathermen bat way over .500 --- you're being much too harsh --- if you can do better, then do a public service and become a weatherman.

If the quality of play in the NFL is so bad, how come so few players from Hackettstown and Warren County have made the cut? New Jersey is well represented in NFL annals but who is the most recent guy from Warren to play there since Ned Bolcar of Pburg?

"Is that sarcasm? They had nobody with 1,000 yards last year and only two WRs break 500. "

LOL. I felt awkward writing it myself. Regardless, Brown wasn't ever in contention for more than a 5th or 6th WR spot. They had Dez, T. Will, Beasely as locked in starters. That trio was pretty good the year before. If you count Witten as the WR4, it's going to be tough for any late round pick.

I do like the WR corp better this year. The 3rd rd pick looks to already be a more polished router runner than Dez. Hopefully Allen Hurns regains more of his pre-injury form. I'm worried about TE. None of them have shown to be better than an senior Witten (which is damn scary.)

A group of Hall of Famers want insurance and salary from the NFL or will boycott future ceremonies.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24720441/group-hall-famers-threaten-boycott-induction-ceremony-nfl-provides-health-insurance-annual-salaries

Calico696 Calico696
Sep '18

They are probably the correct group to advocate for former players. I think lifetime healthcare insurance isn't too much to ask, considering...

As for the annual salary, I'm a lot less inclined to sympathize with that, unless they're talking about guys who played in the '50s and '60s. Even mediocre pros make more money in ten years than the average working stiff makes in his lifetime. If you pissed it away, that's on you.

-------------------------------------------------------
While the proposal is currently for Hall of Fame players, Dickerson said the goal is to eventually get health insurance for all former NFL players.

"I want health care for every player, that's my main goal," Dickerson told ESPN. "All my offensive linemen who blocked for me, the tight ends, receivers and everyone I played with, don't you think I want them to have health care? I want those guys to have health care. I want those guys to get exactly what we get. I want them to have a really good pension.

"Those guys played just as hard as I did to get to the Hall of Fame. I want them to get health care, but we have to start here first. We have to get to 1 before we can get to 10. You have to start with the Hall of Famers because we're trying to get some power first. We don't have a voice at the table and we're trying to get there with the attention of the Hall of Famers first. When you get Hall of Famers talking, hopefully you get the attention of the masses."

ianimal ianimal
Sep '18

Not sure why they just don't set some money aside, while they are playing, to buy their own insurance.

Oh wait, that would mean actually planning instead of blowing money on drugs, cars, jewelry, booze, women etc.

Calico696 Calico696
Sep '18

Well, for one thing, the players of the 50s were not made aware what damage the game would do to them for the rest of their lives … and just about all of them had to work an off-season job simply to provide the basics for their families. The NFL is such a money making machine these days, they could do more, to show these people some appreciation. The Lambeau "Frozen Tundra" and all the traditions that made the NFL so popular began with these guys. Most of them were good, conservative Christians, they always stood for the anthem … only a few were the sort of reckless person described above.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Sep '18

Dear NFL Players and NFL itself-

I 100% agree football damages both the body and the mind of the players.

I 100% agree that for a long time the NFL organization was well aware of this while downplaying the risks to the players, both taking advantage of them and profiting from it.

That being said, a a veteran of the U.S. Army, when I read this-

"To build this game, we sacrificed our bodies. In many cases, and despite the fact that we were led to believe otherwise, we sacrificed our minds. We believe we deserve more. We write to demand two things: Health insurance and annual salary for all Hall of Famers that includes a share of league revenue."

I see that you played the sport, profited and partied from the sport, and now in older age are having sour grapes. Seeing the current contract pay #'s must really upset you.

Cold hard fact- every single minute of every single day, as I type, as you are reading, under the comfortable umbrella of safety they never stop providing- there are many many thousands of men and woman sacrificing not only body and mind, but years away from family & friends and a normal life. In many instance death, loss of limbs, disfigured.

Servicemen never got a big salary. Horrible pay in fact, and way more hours than a normal person gives for a paycheck.

Servicemen never get paid attention to unless someone died and then they get a 30 second mention on the news.

Unless you have lived it, you don't realize the shear # of humans sacrificing any moment of any day to allow this umbrella of comfort you live under.

Our country is great right?

The only reason another country hasn't taken us over, hasn't taken our land is because the entire world is well aware of our ever ready military force.

Shamefully our own citizens take it for granted, but we have a massive amount of people working / training every day, with all the pain and sacrifice that entails- ready to absolutely destroy whatever an enemy brings our way if they are called upon.

Service person never get limelight on TV, never get people wearing their jersey or a collectors card or poster, never get the 'burden' or 'hassle' of an autograph session.

They don't open sports bar in their name, no hall of fame coats glory, no big rings, no publicized platform to grand stand with threats of not showing up in order to force more money.

I'm tired of typing- so basically, suck it up and deal with it. You wouldn't have had the luxury to have had what you did if it wasn't for people suffering MUCH more than you for MUCH less pay, respect, recognition. If anything YOU owe the veterans.

Not just the NFL players- every single person reading this. Even me- I served, I suffered, but I still owe those that suffered more than I, those that didn't make it back, or came back less than they were before they left.

Ugh. :(

KC vs LAR in the Superbowl. That's my prediction.

Strange thing happened...I was busy with work on Sunday during the 1pm games (so couldn't sit on the couch and watch.) Decided to bring up the NFL app and (remembering that they "had" a deal with Verizon), thought I'd watch the locally televised game. I was expecting to watch the Jets (with Giants playing at 4pm.)

I was able to watch Dallas vs Detroit, free of charge. The app did ask me if I had DirecTv (or one other service...which I can't remember right now.) I do have DTV and gave the app my log in info.

Is there a deal with DTV by where you can watch non-locally televised games for free? I don't have the NFL package. Is there a free promo going on?

At a Phillies baseball game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, a group of Philadelphia fans was antagonizing the home crowd with chants of "E-A-G-L-E-S" and "Boston sucks."

By the way, with the University of Oregon quarterback being the most highly regarded college prospect these days, the Giants may start tanking games to get him in the draft … the cheer will be "Suck for the Duck." LOL

Ravens with 11 sacks, winning a shutout against the former superduck QB. They've given up 77 points in six games, by far the fewest in the league. Said the Raven, 'never score.'

First time in a long time I watched football all day. I was visiting family in South Jersey just outside of Philly and we watched mostly all the games.

I 100% disagree with the Titans going for the two point conversion. I call that going for the loss.

My brother decided to go home after the third quarter of the Carolina Philadelphia game with the score 17-0. His quote "...it's over..." I said I do believe there is still another quarter of football to play. His reply? "...believe me CBGB, it's over..."
great comeback by the Panthers and an exciting end to a game I really didn't care who won.
Redskins Cowboys was a good game as well.
But I was truly disappointed when the Browns Buccaneers game was taken off the air during overtime. I know it is the policy but that still sucked.

Steelers went into their bye week in third place and came out of it in first place. Not a bad week off...

The Ravens missed an extra point for the first time in seven years, at the worst possible time! Not a second guess, I wanted the Ravens to go for two, for the win, because … 1. I didn't want Brees to get the ball again and beat us … 2. the offense had momentum and the Saints were having trouble defending the pass … they could have run a trap, counter, or draw, against a spread out defense ... the "ratbirds" were right there with a chance to win ... in OT they would have needed to put together another drive (Jacoby Jones and his 100-yard kick returns are no longer on the roster).

"Redskins Cowboys was a good game as well."

Fun to watch, but not a good game for the Skins at all. The Skins did not win, Dallas lost. We just got lucky to score the W and after years, score a Dallas win.

The team probably heard the loudest cheering that they have heard in years. That's always a good thing to inspire. And it was exciting; everyone was yelling.

Smith has the stuff but loses it in consistency and mistakes. A run out of bounds within 1 minute while not getting the first down and allowing Dallas to save a timeout is something he will be hearing all week and beyond. He has his albatross. High School clock control on that one. His team is the same. They have the stuff but miss tackles, missed opportunities, 4th down attempts when 3 points would have helped.... And how did Prescott keep slipping the grasp; like he was greased or maybe our defense greased their own hands. Of course, again, over and over, they keep letting the opponents back in the game in the 2nd half. Fear of winning is stopping them from gaining an early closure. Lots to work on.

A win is a win, we enjoyed it, would love to rally behind the team but just have that nagging sense we are about to be massively disappointed by their inconsistent play. Would rather have luck than skill but don't want to survive on it.

Eagles got their act together in the second half, at least enough to beat a Jax team that has fallen on hard times. Wentz is a great athlete, but there are times in the NFL when you need to throw the ball away and not try to extend the play -- turnovers could have been really costly today. Now, a bye week and a big home game vs Dallas :-D

Second week for the field goal to hit the uprights during the Native American game last week out (dallas), this week in (natives). Poor Eli, does not seem fair, so many sacks. Seemingly great team talents, but can't get it together ---- sure sounds familiar to me and may again very, very shortly.....

Fewer stupid mistakes, most of today's by the Giants, so getting to feel like we are actually playing 4 Q's of football.

Then, the Native Americans still almost found a way to dump an uncatchable lead in the 4th quarter. So, still not getting totally suck in, but getting much, much closer.....

Had to give kicker Way the Emmy for his hurt leg routine on the punt. As he limped off the field, God was actually present, likes the Natives, and we witnessed a football miracle three downs later when Way pushed his replacement off the field and boldly, yes, gamely, shook off the limp and blasted that ball for one of his longest punts.... He then sprinted off the field :>)

We're against the death penalty, but totally for some capitol punishment and if you're gonna fake an injury, fake a personal attack, you're in good company in DC.!

The Native Americans played the Eagles pretty tough last year. I consider them legit. The NFL parity rules make it pretty tough to build a team without any weakness, and they make it hard to keep a good, veteran team together.

I've seen a couple of champion Ravens teams taken apart simply because they had to make choices on who to pay and who to let go, which had nothing to do with the individuals' performance, because they would have preferred to keep everybody.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Oct '18

Yes, we had the skills last year, but could not get it together to be top tier.

So many years, so many skilled tribes that went down in flames. Just a little shell shocked after the last decade given that when we win three-in-a-row, it's like a hundred year flood record...… A couple more wins, and once again I will be lost in the frenzy.

Did wonder why Smith over Cousins.....glad to see Cousins getting good play, a TV ad, --- he deserves it. He was skilled, just couldn't get it together in DC.....

But even in our worst year, we can still give the Giants, Cowboys, and Eagles fits, and vice-versa in our best years. I do love this division and would be a Giants or Eagles fan in a second if the Natives did not exist. Especially the Giants who give me that Natives feeling every time I watch. Never a Cowboys fan however; that's a bridge too far....

Everyone on those skins teams choked. Cousins stats say different

No, there appears to never have been a fit, both ways. Cousins, from all accounts, never did anything wrong, he just never seemed 110% invested. 3 years on the bench may have started it. For his six years there, he rented his house... Same with mgt who, at one briefing, called him Kurt —4 times. For the money they paid, they wanted superman and all they got was a great q. Kirk just wanted to win, and it was very hard there. So I saw the term “wary” as being used to describe both sides. A fit issue from both sides and, from what I read, the team caught in the middle without a leader or mgt that believed.

It.happens but didnt seem like a lot of fireworks in this one, just didn’t fit.

Now Theisman, now there’s some personality disorder stories!

I met him at a cable TV convention signing, no memorable anecdotes, blond aging Tony Curtis was much more friendly. Skipped the graph and we just chatted. Still have the Theisman graph.

The best was the t-shirt story. But the time Joe was dating Kathie Lee, basically the team had disowned him for being such an obnoxious self-centered arrogant jerk. Only Riggins and Mosely would begrudgingly sit with him for meals during training. In this environment, Joe comes in with a "get hot with Kathie Lee" t-shirt for his teamies.

Not long after, a hole developed In the offensive line and LT steamed on through.

Rumor has it that replacement Jay Schroeder immediately gave the line Rolex's and the hole magically disappeared. I never heard any Natives fan blame LT although I have heard them blame the T.... :>)

A lackluster performance today by a Ravens team that needed a win to stay in serious contention. Unlike the two Super Bowl winners, this year's Ravens have no running game.

The Baltimore Buzz now is that Harbaugh's job is in jeopardy, but he can't run onto the field to make a block or tackle somebody, the players have to do that:-(

Next two are at home vs. Cincy and Oakland --- if they lose to Oakland ….

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Nov '18

You want lackluster, the skins rule. We were mauled. It was an epic beat down. The fans left early in the fourth. We had more penalty yardage than yards. Our best defense was interference. And now, once again, I have to watch. This was a coaching problem; apparently we were expecting the Eagles and a bird of a different color showed up. A very fast bird, a Falcon. Literally they ran circles around us.

Yes, lots of division games for the Eagles. Two extremely tough games though. Saints and Rams both on the road.

Here's to hoping Mr. Tate can give the offense the boost it needs. Sproles is supposed to be back this week and Jernigan was cleared for practice. Still missing some other pieces, but it's go time if they want a playoff spot.

Calico696 Calico696
Nov '18

Getting Tate is a really good move. The Sixers tried hoarding draft picks, they called it "the process" but they still are not being taken seriously as an NBA contender. In football, you've really got to have the "win now" mentality, because tomorrow is never promised to anyone and it is always a day away.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Nov '18

There's a reason Dak was a late 4th round pick. Endzone INT was poor decision making. Two sacks he took was because he hung onto the ball too long. Had a chance to throw the ball away on one run out of the pocket but held onto it. Lucky he didn't lose yardage (and ended up with a sack.) Last throw on 4th down out the back of the endzone was terrible. Give the receivers a chance!

I'm not one to put all the blame on the QB but Dak is not good enough. He'll make a play here and there but most times, he's just not a good passer.

With all of this said, playcalling was terrible too. I don't care if the OL isn't playing to elite status. They are still a good OL. There are a plenty of good teams with not-elite OLs.

Ready to move on from the Garrett era. Make Kris Richard the head coach. Get an innovative OC for the offense. What he has done with the defense has been amazing.

Very strange to me, espically with this weekend coming up.
When I was not as “ long in the tooth” as I am now, I could watch football nonstop.
Thanksgiving morning would begin with the annual HS game “Iona Prep/ New Rochelle” on channel 9 hosted by Marty Glickman in black and white.
I didn’t care about the teams or the quality of the transmission. It was football.
That was followed by the annual Turkey day dbl header- always Dallas and Detroit and some other game.
Then on to college football- one or two Friday games, then a full slate on Saturday.
Full NFL schedule on Sunday, followed by the marquee game-MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL- Howard, Dandy Don and the Giff!
I watched it ALL. Couldn’t get enough.
But now, don’t really care.
I check the scores and watch a little college. But I’ve lost my appetite.
Players are bigger and faster, but despite this, the game has slowed down ( to me).
Pumping in commercials on a split screen during a time out, lengthy review from the booth, stupid touchdown celebrations, penalties, penalties, penalties— stick a fork in me , I’m done.
I’ll watch a little Hockey, UCONN Woman’s hoops, and patiently wait for NCAA hoops- conference tourneys and THE BIG DANCE, which in my opinion, is the purest athletic competition of the year-One and DONE.
Sorry about the lengthy post- but I’ve lost my football “ Jones”.

The NFL rules are out of whack IMO. Spiking the ball to stop the clock for example. I understand what it is. What I don't understand is how this fits in the rules of the game. If it is a pass then it should be ruled intentional grounding. If it isn't a pass then it should be a fumble. I understand that the rules of the game were changed for that situation, I just don't like it. Which leads me to a play I saw in a Jets game. The ball was fumbled into the end zone which was OK since it wasn't 4th down or near the end of the half. Again I understand the intention but I don't agree. Intentional grounding isn't intentional grounding if you are outside the tackle position and this and that, oi vey.
And the antics are getting out of control. Players acting like they won a playoff game or the superbowl after something as simple as an interception.

But I'll keep watching

Ron Jaworski "Jaws" says a lot of dumb things but one that made me laugh … "I never spiked the ball, I just threw it to the prettiest blonde in the stands."

Dallas' defense played lights out but they've been playing great all year (with the exception of the Titans game.) I'm not entirely shocked Dallas won but am totally shocked at the low score. I thought it would be a 31-28 type game.

Bad missed calls by the refs for both teams in the second half. Real sloppy officiating. At the end of the day, both teams got favorable calls (offensive pass interference in the endzone anyone?) Too late now for N.O.

Onto Philly. Whatever happens, Dallas can't lose this one. If somehow they end up with the same record, Philly will have the div tie breaker. They can lose vs Colts, just not vs Philly.

The Eagles are 5-for-5 when going for two … last night it was big, making it a two-score game … then "The Giant Killer" made it a two-touchdown game … Sanchez is still in the league while Kaepernick is not … many may not like what Kaepernick did (I certainly would have preferred a different way to protest, I would have advised him that kneeling at the anthem would detract from and cloud his intended message) but it was not violent … a lot of guys with violent felonies in their history are still playing. Go figure.

Hey, he was the only guy willing to come to work that day...…but still --- he gets one more chance before he's on the bone pile. Everyone deserves a come back rally. Even Lazarus.

Yeah, DC would have had a "values" issue with Kaepernick --- you do know what city we play for, right? Remember what our name is, right? That would be the sweetest irony around :>)

Nice Lazarus reference … bless you, you're a good man. Y'know that Redskins name has been around forever … even before I started watching the games over 50 years ago … don't recall Martin Luther King or Bobby Kennedy ever saying anything about it … and they were such great civil rights crusaders who I'll admire forever.

The Eagles secondary is decimated … maybe they can bring in a decent player from the Canadian Football League. An old high school teammate played in the CFL … when I asked him how he liked it, he said "there's one more guy out there who can hit you" … for those who don't know the CFL has 12 players and three downs … Baltimore is the only US city to win the Grey Cup, in 1995, also the only city to win the NFL, USFL and CFL championships … of course, the latter two would not have happened if the Colts had stayed in town.

The Ravens are in for a rough game. After all these years, Cleveland is putting together a really competitive team worthy of NFL membership.

How about that Nick Foles … whether the Eagles make it in or not, Sunday's game was a memorable one for the ages.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Dec '18

Fingers crossed for Baltimore - will be a rough game for sure - Cleveland is growing up! Not so impressed by Jackson - afraid he may be another injury-prone Michael Vick-type player - what do you thing Andy - is he too young to really be evaluated, is he likely to mature into a player with more than the default run capacity?

I think that the Eatles plays differently with Foles at the helm... I wonder if they have more confidence in Foles - or are more comfortable with him as a leader?

pmnsk pmnsk
Dec '18

Jackson got his opportunity due to the injury to Flacco, and he's run with it (pun intended) … the Ravens have done well with drafting linemen on both sides of the ball over the years and that's more of a factor in their recent success, Jackson has been the beneficiary of having teammates who are well equipped for a running game … and ball control has helped the defense … they are fresh because the offense rarely has gone three-and-out.

Ultimately, to be a successful NFL QB long term, Jackson's passing game will have to improve … this whole situation reminds this old Baltimore Colts fan of the time in 1965 when John Unitas went down with an injury and the Colts had to face the Green Bay Packers of Vince Lombardi in a play off game "on the frozen tundra" with Tom Matte at QB. You can look that one up on google if you're interested in some NFL history.

Now that the Chargers have already seen what the Ravens do with their revamped offense, will be interesting to see what kinds of adjustments they make. If the offense is ineffective in the first half, will they go to old playoff veteran (he's got a good playoff win/loss record) Joe Flacco?

One thing that scares me, hoping for the Eagles to continue embracing their underdog role -- the Bears made a lot of big pass plays with their receivers running double-move routes... and nobody is going to mistake their QB for Joe Montana ... Brees is probably licking his chops while watching the film.

Well, the Ravens lost to the Saints by a point, the only missed PAT in Justin Tucker's career … so you can stay with the Saints if you play good defense … but that game was in Baltimore … the Saints really catch fire at home.

Eagles in a 49-48 shootout … in addition to Foles' brilliance, I like the birds' receivers … they really go get the ball, it does not have to be a perfect throw for them to catch it … Eagles win on a Hail Mary after recovering an onside kick ... that would be FUN :-D

I've always believed when it comes to choosing all-star teams (I've had experience with that as local media) and Hall of Fame voting … you can't let personal feelings color your evaluation of someone's performance on the field. Certainly, if a coach wants to win, he has to play the best players regardless of who he likes or dislikes personally or who the kid's parents are. You can't argue with Brady's results … besides, when KC went ahead, I knew in my gut that Brady was going to bring his team back and win the game... he is THAT GOOD. I would agree that Tom Brady is the greatest QB of all time... but all-time greatest player, IMO, is Jerry Rice. No one has dominated a position like he did.

From Wikipedia...

"His 1,549 career receptions are 307 receptions ahead of the second place record held by Tony Gonzalez. His 22,895 career receiving yards are 6,961 yards ahead of the second place spot held by his former 49ers teammate Terrell Owens. His 197 career touchdown receptions are 41 scores more than the second place record of 156 touchdown receptions by Randy Moss, and his 208 total touchdowns (197 receiving, 10 rushing, and one fumble recovery) are 33 scores ahead of Emmitt Smith's second place total of 175. He also threw a touchdown pass against the Atlanta Falcons in a 1995 regular season game. His 1,256 career points scored make him the highest-scoring non-kicker in NFL history. During a career spanning two decades, Rice averaged 75.6 receiving yards per game"

Lots of people agree with Ian … Rice has rings and records and really stands apart … coaching also plays a major role in the success of players … Rice and Montana had the great Bill Walsh. Continuity of coaching … if you're playing for a different coach each year, you don't know which end is up.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Jan '19

Jerry is great no doubt but he also had 2 HOF QBs throwing the ball. Randy and TO might have come closer if they didn't go all psycho towards the ends of their careers.

I'll stick with Brady. 9 SB appearances, 8 straight AFC championship games in a salary cap era designed to keep that from happening. He's done it with a star here and there but also done it with nobodies around him more often than not.

emaxxman emaxxman

I became a Brady convert after seeing what he did to the Falcons in the Super Bowl. And yes I think he has passed Rice as the best ever.
but this picture "rings" a bit true

honestly, the eagles are in the same division as those teams mentioned. they play twice a year. now if the eagles beat the super bowl champs both times during the regular season then that would be something

In the 80s and 90s that was a great division. No easy games, ever. Michael Vick beat the Ravens with a late TD in the 2012 game … since it was the Eagles, I remember saying to myself, hey, this might be our year :-D

Brady may be a great player, but he is a sore loser.
He did not shake hands with Nick Foles at last year's Super Bowl.
Just found out that he played 8 super bowl games. Won 5.Lost 3.
He did not shake hands with Eli Manning either when the Giants won 2 Super Bowls.

I'm curious why the Saints fans arent up in arms about the blatant facemask penalty against Goff that would have set the Rams up with a 1st and goal at the 1-yard line on the drive immediately preceding the missed pass interference call. I guess missed calls only constitute "robbery" when they go against you.

The Saints also, like the Pats, had everything in their hands when they won the coin flip and got the ball to start overtime. Unlike Brady, Brees chucked up an awful ball that got picked off and Zeuerlein did the rest. That was a kick for the ages. Saints fans may and probably should supplant Seahawks fans as the biggest whiners in the league.

Tom Brady can tie Jim Kelly for all-time most Super Bowl losses with 4 if the Rams win. Then, his overall SB record of 5-4 wouldn't look all that impressive... if you happen to ignore how amazing it is to get to 9 SBs in 18 years.

He would also be 2-4 in his last 6 appearances. (could have been 1-5 if not for the choke of the ages by Matt Ryan and the Falcons... and 0-6 if Pete Carroll just would have fed Beast Mode).

Joey Mo would once again get a lot more support when it comes to talk of GOAT. "Sure Brady can win the crappy AFC every other year, but , when the chips are down... I want Montana in the Big Game"

ianimal ianimal
Jan '19

...but one of Montana's wins came at the expense of a massive no show by Denver, no?

At the end of the day, you win by playing well regardless of whether the other team chokes or not. It's not like Atlanta stayed in the locker room after half time. Brady also marched his team down the field to take the lead in the win over Seattle. If they lost, it would be on the defense and not on Brady. Team sport.

The Patriots dynasty of 10+ years in a free agency-salary cap era is more impressive than anything before and during it. We may never see another dynasty like this.

I enjoyed the game - tense defensive struggle, some great plays by Julian Edelman. And I agree with CBGB about Tony Romo; I got sick of listening to him.

I guess technically the Rams didn't deserve to be there. But that's another discussion of this league of losers. It was the equivalent of the underdog pinning the champ in wrestling but the ref was knocked out and didn't see the pin. Classic WWF. Go back and watch a game from the mid 70's. Football is unrecognizable today.

I figured the Pats would win prior to the game starting, however it was cemented in my mind when the camera panned to Jared Goff during the National Anthem. His hand was shaking and he looked like he was going to pass out. I turned to my husband and asked if he saw it. He said yes. I told him that it was not going to be a good game for Mr. Goff.

"Football is unrecognizable today." Yeah, there was that one call on "he tackled him too soon after the catch....." I mean these guys gonna need helmet cam with red/don't, green/do warning lights soon to know when it's OK to hit.

And overtime. "We need to reset the clock 10 minutes back so the refs can explain the overtime rules, again, for 10 minutes...…."

I though the commentators were as good as Madden, if Madden was drunk and passed out.

Wow, I missed that.... yikes...

Oh well. The GOAT does have a "kryptonite"...

vs Manning 0-2
vs Foles 0-1

At least we Giants and Eagles fans have that! lol

to be fair to Goff, that was probably Brady's worst game too, Neither QB looked good. Also that hit on Goff right at the sideline would have been a flag if it was Brady.

After 2 exciting Conference Champ Games we get probably the worst SB of all time.

Maybe we can have NO and KC play next week in a consolation game?

The Ravens eliminated the Pats in the playoffs twice, and came darn close two other times … Joe Flacco does have that in his history.

Calico would have liked Johnny Unitas back in the day, they tell tales to this day in the dives and watering holes of Baltimore about Johnny U's legendary beer drinking :-D

Natty Boh!

Jim L -- they did play a consolation game back in the 1960s, before the NFL started adding divisions and created wild cards.

The second place team in the East played the second place team from the West at Miami's Orange Bowl … as the second place team from the West, behind Vince Lombardi's Packers, the Baltimore Colts won this game in 1966 and 67 (35-0 over Dallas and 20-14 over the Eagles) … go figure that Baltimore was from the West and Dallas was from the East … guess the NFL never was very good at reading a map.

I'm sticking with SB VII as still the worst. Sure Miami completed their perfect season but the highlight was the garo yepremian pass attempt resulting in Washingtons only score in this snoozefest 14-7 game.

I think excitement for the N.F.L. and the Super Bowl is a thing of the past. It’s far from the N.F.L. That I grew up with.

For this old timer, the worst Super Bowl games were the four that Minnesota lost, the one where Dallas beat Denver (January of 78), and the blowouts.

If I were a Giants fan, the Ravens' 34-7 romp over the Gmen in Supe 35 would be at the top of the list (the only Super Bowl game the Giants have ever lost) … the Ravens made winning ugly an art form that year while just totally shutting down the opposition … said the Raven "never score" … if I wasn't such a Baltimore guy I would have totally despised that team :-D

Roywhite Roywhite

Yes, Mr. Yankees classy outfielder from the 60s and 70s … story out that Joe Flacco is going to Denver … done deal, just a matter of which round draft pick the Ravens get in the transaction.

If he stays healthy all year, Super Joe could lead the Broncos back to glory … with that defense he'll feel the way he did when guys like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed had his back.

With Flacco's destination set, the Giants must be thinking about making a move on Foles, no? Or will they take one last chance with Eli?

Foles will not go to Balt.?

Maybe u were lucky enough to hear Frank Messers call, full of cadence...hit to left...Roooy White makes the play.

Roywhite Roywhite
Feb '19

I'd be THRILLED to see Foles go to Baltimore but they seem committed to Lamar Jackson and that "Wildcat" style offense that works better in college than the NFL. Frank Messer … there's a real old school baseball broadcaster … called O's games with Chuck Thompson before he went to New York to do the Yankees.

Frank Robby's catch of a woulda-been Roy White walk-off homer in 66 is quite a memory … Frank fell back into the stands and I've seen it on video several times … he said the fans were trying to pull the ball out of the glove … all I know is he hopped back onto the field with the ball in his glove … the ump said "out" and the game was over. Hard to believe that was over 50 years ago … I was in high school!

He was caught on video during a sting operation for human trafficking - not a good look for the NFL . Anyone watching the AAF league ? Some of those games are pretty entertaining with players competing hard for another shot at the NFL .I especially like the bombs away offense of the Orlando team .

I've been watching the AAF. If it seems we have enough interest here, I will start a thread. My husband and I chose the Memphis Express as our team (obviously not looking like the best choice so far.....LMAO) since nothing was local. We have enjoyed the games so far.

Calico696 Calico696

The Memphis Express have sure shown why the Jets never played their second round pick QB Christian Hackenberg . By the same token I wonder what flaw 27 year old Orlando QB Garrett Gilbert has that cost him his backup spots in the NFL ? So far he's chuckin' the rock 50 yards or more down the field with ease and right on target .

What is "B/R Live"?

Bleacher Report have a streaming service or something?

ianimal ianimal
Feb '19

B/R live is an app owned by Turner Sports and is free until June . I will probably check to see if the game (if it's one I want to watch) is on aaf.com or watch it on reddit aaf streams on the computer rather than order an app and cancel it in May . Or I may just check to see if getting the app on Roku doesn't require giving them credit card info .It was a real PITA to cancel Sirius once they had the cc info - almost canceled the card before they finally answered my email .

Unlike the Netflix Marvel shows which were living on borrowed time since Disney announced it would launch it's own streaming service . Yep they canceled Punisher and Jessica Jones . Don't care about any of them except Punisher and Daredevil , both of which had really good last seasons . Hopefully Disney will continue them as the Netflix exposure gave them a built in fan base .

Calico, do you remember the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars in the USFL? … a most successful franchise on the field, went to the finals all three years of the league and won two titles... attended some of the games and watched the rest of them on TV.
Many players went on to the NFL. They signed all the Penn State guys they could, figuring they had a great football education. Turned out to be a good plan.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu

Among the USFL players who made a big impact in the NFL was Reggie White!

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Feb '19

Jim Kelly(his Houston Gamblers were my favorite USFL team) and Steve Young were a couple of other USFL players who had Hall of Fame NFL careers . If you liked the USFL Andy read the book Football For A Buck . The Warren County library has it and it's hilarious ! Don't know if this league will survive , but I'm going to enjoy it while lasts . BTW pretty much every game is on the aaf.com website .

Thanks. This new league looks like an NFL Triple-A league. The USFL seriously went after top talent … many owners hoped their franchise would be taken in by the NFL in some sort of merger.... that never happened.

We'll see if someone from the AAF makes a big NFL impact next year, that would give it a real boost.

A lot of the USFL franchises had a problem competing with major league baseball for attendance during the spring in the large markets … the Phillies were a World Series team during the time the Stars were there, with household names like Rose, Schmidt and Carlton … cities like San Antonio, Orlando … those are perfect for this kind of league. In 1983 the 76ers were World Champs (playoffs lasted throughout May) … the Flyers were a playoff team … lots of competition for the entertainment dollar
