2018 NFL Season
It's cut down day. Let's see who stays and who goes on the rosters.
The playoff rematch of the Falcons and Eagles will kick off the season Thursday night. Doug Pederson says the public won't know until 90 minutes before kick-off whether Wentz or Foles will start. Please, please, please football gods.....let Ginger Jesus be ready!!!! LOL
Not interested anymore since several players decided to disrespect our veterans as well as our country by kneeling during the national anthem in favor of their false narrative.
I can't believe the Cowboys cut Dan Bailey , the best kicker in their history , and kept recently busted unproven TE Rico Gathers .
The Bears back up the money truck for Khalil Mack and make him the highest paid D-Lineman ever ! No wonder Tom Brady is feeling like the end is near with his modest contract .
It's a game for neanderthals and criminals. Biggest bummer about the end of summer is now we have to deal with all the football idiots and their "fantasy" teams. My favorite is the people that talk like they are on their favorite teams roster. Beyond pathetic.
"My favorite is the people that talk like they are on their favorite teams roster. Beyond pathetic."
Hahahaha! I have one friend who constantly uses "we" when talking about his teams. It drives me batty!
And now we have soccer heading concussion injury alerts.....
New generation of soccer protection suits.
Roywhite - Vegas says 10-1 odds on that.
Not interested anymore since several players decided to disrespect our veterans as well as our country by kneeling during the national anthem in favor of their false narrative.
But yet you decided to not only read a thread titled: "2018 NFL Season", but then comment in said thread. But NO you're not interested, NOT you.
Sports unifies, politics divides. I'm glad I live in a country where nobody holds a gun to my head to force me to stand at attention for the anthem. I simply do it out of my own free will to show love and optimism for my country. I thank the servicemen, such as John McCain, whose heroic actions have enabled our country to be free, a land where civil liberties and freedom of speech are valued.
Clyde Potts, yeah I took time to comment on the thread for the reasons stated. So what's your problem?
Anyone who has Nike stock - SELL! SELL! SELL ! Nike is making Colin Kaepernick one of the faces of their new ads . I can't imagine how that will turn out good . It will be about as popular as the New Coke debacle !
Colin Kaepernick, Face of N.F.L. Protests, Is Face of New Nike Campaign https://nyti.ms/2MNYCC5
Their research probably shows Colin works for their target demographic, which most likely is not middle aged men who sit in their easy chairs watching FOX News all day. I doubt they will do many ad buys there, if any.
NFL Football was Great pre-1980's expansion. Now, as in other pro sports, they have way too many players ruining the sport by dilution. 70-80% of the NFL couldn't make the Canadian or Mexican football leagues back then.
Pro baseball has never recovered from their strike, but it will come back once the people die who lived through it.
Then again we're Americans, we forgive Professional Talkers i.e. politicians, media and lawyers for mis-speaking, mediocre athletes for continually terrible performances, and of course the weathermen who bat way less than .500 on their forecasts.
The libs are winning this one too. They found that by politicizing past times, they can get fans to give up. Heck, they are even saturating home and garden tv with little political digs, in no time they'll be just like espn.
Used to be Religion, then it was sports, and now politics is the opium of the masses.
Wise up! take your time and money elsewhere.
The NFL is a complete joke. If you watch it then you also must watch pro wrestling, it's on the same level. The NFL in the 70's-early 90s were the golden years. What you have basically supports gambling and the criminal element we call players.
So sad to hear people talk football like it matters. Even worse is a constant push from parents to get their kids in line for a concussion by some overzealous fanatical armchair coaches. Such ghetto game now.
I'd say the weathermen bat way over .500 --- you're being much too harsh --- if you can do better, then do a public service and become a weatherman.
If the quality of play in the NFL is so bad, how come so few players from Hackettstown and Warren County have made the cut? New Jersey is well represented in NFL annals but who is the most recent guy from Warren to play there since Ned Bolcar of Pburg?
The irony of using Kaepernick as a spokesperson is they probably paid him a lot of money for that ad while paying slave wages to people in other countries to make their products. Poor Colin.... I'm sure he's living off Ramen noodles with all the millions he's made....
I have been watching football for 43 years I am so disgusted with this Colin Kaepernick don’t even want to watch anymore he wore socks with cops as pigs enough said .
We all have the choice to boycott whatever we would like. If you don’t like the NFL, it’s very simple, don’t watch.
"who is the most recent guy from Warren to play there since Ned Bolcar of Pburg?"
Noah Brown, WR - Dallas Cowboys. It's his second year but he just got moved to IR. Played a few games last year but with the WR depth that Dallas has, a UFA, like Brown won't get many snaps.
I'm shocked that you didn't know about him Andy. :-)
"with the WR depth that Dallas has..."
Is that sarcasm? They had nobody with 1,000 yards last year and only two WRs break 500. Bleacher Report ranks them 30th, ahead of only Buffalo and Tennessee (for whatever that's worth)...
Doesn’t West Morris High School in Flanders have a guy in the NFL....maybe the cowboys,I think he came to Hackettstown last year to a store and signed pics.Somebody correct me if I’m wrong lolll..
Found this. His name is Michael Burton says he plays for the Chicago Bears now.
Thanks BroadwayNJ that’s him....I knew I wasn’t daydreaming..anybody remember him coming to town last year or 2 for pics ?
So who does everyone like on the betting line tonight? I've got a parlay with the Eagles giving half a point and the over at 45.5 on SugarHouse which pays 265 per 100 if I hit.
I'm on SugarHouse only because I can't get DraftKings to take my money. Not sure what the problem is. There isn't any issue depositing money to gamble on DFS, only their sportsbook seems to be a problem.
Ugly, ugly, ugly....but 1-0. The Eagles defense did an excellent job of keeping the game close.
"The Eagles defense did an excellent job of keeping the game close."
that was the inept Falcons offense that did that. :)
14 QB hits with 4 sacks. Atlanta better get some OL help or Matty Ice will be dead by week 3.
Question... Has the Eagles team done anything in the past to encourage more sane behavior from their fans? Last year's rampage was it for me...I root for anyone but the Eagjes now. Sad because some family members grew up in Phillie.
It was on the news after their final game. They did considerable damage to one of the city streets. Don't know who they played though. Were they in the Suoer Bowl?
Link? There was no damage I was aware of at all. While you are looking for that link, be sure to look up damage to other cities after championships were won. One city that sticks out in my mind is when the Chicago Bulls won in the 1990s. Riots, shootings, fires several times over the decade the Bulls were hot. But yet Philly is always the city to pick on. Sigh...
Calico, I didn't read it on any site... Just looked up Phillies last game and score.
I actually saw it on one of the news channels because my son was at my house at the time and pointed out the damage being done to the city on whatever channel was on the tv at the time.
I know other fans get wild too, but had never seen the damage that follows the big games
before. I must lead a sheltered life! ; )
Hahaha, maybe. This kind of stuff has gone on forever in all different cities. Cars get overturned, fires are started, looting etc. There is no excuse for it IMO, but just pointing out that it happens all over the place.
yet still damn funny.
I will say jet fans are right up there with the philly fan rep. I was at the Monday night game against Buffalo that got beer sales stopped at night games at the meadowlands. it was brutal.
"Is that sarcasm? They had nobody with 1,000 yards last year and only two WRs break 500. "
LOL. I felt awkward writing it myself. Regardless, Brown wasn't ever in contention for more than a 5th or 6th WR spot. They had Dez, T. Will, Beasely as locked in starters. That trio was pretty good the year before. If you count Witten as the WR4, it's going to be tough for any late round pick.
I do like the WR corp better this year. The 3rd rd pick looks to already be a more polished router runner than Dez. Hopefully Allen Hurns regains more of his pre-injury form. I'm worried about TE. None of them have shown to be better than an senior Witten (which is damn scary.)
"No two events are quite as demonstrative of failure as a father as the first time your daughter grabs the stripper pole or the first time your son dons a Dallas Cowboys jersey." - Thomas Jefferson
"Anyone who has Nike stock - SELL! SELL! SELL ! Nike is making Colin Kaepernick one of the faces of their new ads . I can't imagine how that will turn out good . It will be about as popular as the New Coke debacle !"
well that panic lasted a whole 5 business days. $81.25 before the announcement, dropped to 79.39 after and back up to $82 today. Glad I didn't sell my stock
Mad Money's Jim Cramer said wait a week then buy Nike stock - since it's more global than U.S, based . I would never since seeing that sleazeball Phil Knight on 60 minutes in the 80s bragging about paying slave wages in Asian countries to mark up his swoosh brand at thousands more for profit . There are brands like new Balance and Saucony that are quite affordable . But if you want to believe Nike lying marketing (Colin Kaepernick still has has 20 million from his NFL contract so he isn't giving up anything) by all means invest in a lying crooked company selling way overpriced swag !
Once again Mile Rowe is absolutely spot on.
How about that rookie QB Sam Darnold ? His first NFL pass in a nationally televised game on the road in front of a hostile crowd and he throws a pick six . But then comes back and routs the other team , the guy must have ice water in his veins . Unfortunately ESPN sounded like they had Suzyn Waldman in the broadcast booth again .
Darnold had a fine game by any standard, especially for a rookie debut, but let's be real here...he didnt rout the other team. 2 TD tosses does not create 48 points.
Except the Iggles weren't dumb enough to give Old Nick a 6-year, $120-million contract (-;
Howie Hero! Hopefully he can unload Foles for something decent, after Ginger Jesus comes back. Off to another team where the QB blows out a knee.
Flacco has seen better days, which is why they drafted a QB this year and brought in RG3. They also need to get the running game going, can't be one dimensional.
The Browns need a place kicker! Charlie Brown could be the kicker, with Lucy as the holder :-D
A few teams need a kicker after today . Just ask Minnesota LOL ! I can't believe Dan Bailey is still unemployed , he really must be injured .The Jets fell back to earth today , but that's okay since this was always a rebuilding year and they are over 90 million under the salary cap next year and can turn it around very quickly if they make the right moves . KC's QB Pat Mahomes Jr. (son of Mets' relief pitcher Pat Mahomes) looks amazing as is his ability to throw the ball 70 yards . But their defense stinks . Should be an interesting year .
Does anyone know how many FGs and extra points were missed yesterday? It seemed like a ton.
A group of Hall of Famers want insurance and salary from the NFL or will boycott future ceremonies.
They are probably the correct group to advocate for former players. I think lifetime healthcare insurance isn't too much to ask, considering...
As for the annual salary, I'm a lot less inclined to sympathize with that, unless they're talking about guys who played in the '50s and '60s. Even mediocre pros make more money in ten years than the average working stiff makes in his lifetime. If you pissed it away, that's on you.
While the proposal is currently for Hall of Fame players, Dickerson said the goal is to eventually get health insurance for all former NFL players.
"I want health care for every player, that's my main goal," Dickerson told ESPN. "All my offensive linemen who blocked for me, the tight ends, receivers and everyone I played with, don't you think I want them to have health care? I want those guys to have health care. I want those guys to get exactly what we get. I want them to have a really good pension.
"Those guys played just as hard as I did to get to the Hall of Fame. I want them to get health care, but we have to start here first. We have to get to 1 before we can get to 10. You have to start with the Hall of Famers because we're trying to get some power first. We don't have a voice at the table and we're trying to get there with the attention of the Hall of Famers first. When you get Hall of Famers talking, hopefully you get the attention of the masses."
Not sure why they just don't set some money aside, while they are playing, to buy their own insurance.
Oh wait, that would mean actually planning instead of blowing money on drugs, cars, jewelry, booze, women etc.
Well, for one thing, the players of the 50s were not made aware what damage the game would do to them for the rest of their lives … and just about all of them had to work an off-season job simply to provide the basics for their families. The NFL is such a money making machine these days, they could do more, to show these people some appreciation. The Lambeau "Frozen Tundra" and all the traditions that made the NFL so popular began with these guys. Most of them were good, conservative Christians, they always stood for the anthem … only a few were the sort of reckless person described above.
Dear NFL Players and NFL itself-
I 100% agree football damages both the body and the mind of the players.
I 100% agree that for a long time the NFL organization was well aware of this while downplaying the risks to the players, both taking advantage of them and profiting from it.
That being said, a a veteran of the U.S. Army, when I read this-
"To build this game, we sacrificed our bodies. In many cases, and despite the fact that we were led to believe otherwise, we sacrificed our minds. We believe we deserve more. We write to demand two things: Health insurance and annual salary for all Hall of Famers that includes a share of league revenue."
I see that you played the sport, profited and partied from the sport, and now in older age are having sour grapes. Seeing the current contract pay #'s must really upset you.
Cold hard fact- every single minute of every single day, as I type, as you are reading, under the comfortable umbrella of safety they never stop providing- there are many many thousands of men and woman sacrificing not only body and mind, but years away from family & friends and a normal life. In many instance death, loss of limbs, disfigured.
Servicemen never got a big salary. Horrible pay in fact, and way more hours than a normal person gives for a paycheck.
Servicemen never get paid attention to unless someone died and then they get a 30 second mention on the news.
Unless you have lived it, you don't realize the shear # of humans sacrificing any moment of any day to allow this umbrella of comfort you live under.
Our country is great right?
The only reason another country hasn't taken us over, hasn't taken our land is because the entire world is well aware of our ever ready military force.
Shamefully our own citizens take it for granted, but we have a massive amount of people working / training every day, with all the pain and sacrifice that entails- ready to absolutely destroy whatever an enemy brings our way if they are called upon.
Service person never get limelight on TV, never get people wearing their jersey or a collectors card or poster, never get the 'burden' or 'hassle' of an autograph session.
They don't open sports bar in their name, no hall of fame coats glory, no big rings, no publicized platform to grand stand with threats of not showing up in order to force more money.
I'm tired of typing- so basically, suck it up and deal with it. You wouldn't have had the luxury to have had what you did if it wasn't for people suffering MUCH more than you for MUCH less pay, respect, recognition. If anything YOU owe the veterans.
Not just the NFL players- every single person reading this. Even me- I served, I suffered, but I still owe those that suffered more than I, those that didn't make it back, or came back less than they were before they left.
Those Bud Light beer fridges were finally unlocked! Congrats Browns fans!
I had the Jets plus 3 points and straight up on the money line. Was looking like a genius until they broke the tie-rod and forced a real QB to come into the game. Mayfield looked pretty good, I have to admit.
He did look good, but it's the Jets. Remember how Darnold looked against the Lions? I need to see him play in a few more games to assess fully. ;-)
Excellent job by the Eagles' defense, stopping Andrew Luck late in the game to hold onto a win. It was Wentz' first game, without taking any snaps in the preseason games, he'll be fine. They put a scoring drive together when they needed one, as they overcame some adversity against an inspired opponent.
Holy upset weekend! Week 3 is historically a bad week for picking. I went back over the last 5 years of my Pick 'em. Week 3 has the lowest win totals by far over any other week.
It was great to see Wentz back yesterday. He looks great! Loved the 11+ minute drive. Hopefully Jeffrey will be back next Sunday. He is sorely missed.
The only thing that would have made this better is if it would have been Jesse James instead of Vance McDonald, lol...
That was a great stiff arm. Loved it. Agree though, would have loved it even more if it were my beloved Jesse.
Nike stock at 85. If you bought the day after the announcement you would have earned just over 6% in 3 weeks. Outperforming the DJIA, which is up just over 2% by almost threefold.
So much for Trump crew's impact on Nike stock.
Why are the Giants and Saints (2 NFC teams) playing on CBS (the AFC's network)?
The only time I've ever seen it before was on Turkey Day when there weren't any AFC teams playing in Detroit or Dallas...
I asked the same thing regarding CBS. Made no sense.
That said, *&^%$#@@! Eagles.. :-(
I noticed last year that the away team's conference network doesn't always get the game anymore. It's up to the NFL and games of national importance is the only thing I can find on the net about it . I had to watch the Cowboy game on the internet today while following it and all the other early games on NFL Network's Redzone channel so I wasn't too concerned about it today . I did laugh when Earl Thomas got hurt and flipped the bird to the Seahawk bench though . Apparently he broke the same leg he broke previously , thank god they didn't take the second round pick offered to them by the Cowboys !
I wasn't too optimistic about the Ravens going into the season, since Flacco had not been very special the last couple of years and the defense has had problems finishing games.
After taking a 14-0 lead, it didn't take the birds very long to allow Pittsburgh to tie it up, but the Ravens prevailed and now are 3-1.
Now everybody's heard about The Bird. Well, don't you know that The Bird is the Word? … papa ru mau mau … Family Guy is dancing away :-D
I put an "emotional hedge" on the game and had $50 on the Ratbirds at +140. I'll use part of my $70 winnings to buy some salve for my severely chapped ass... this defense is sucking wind and the offense spit and sputtered all night. Terrible effort on both sides of the ball.
"Screw the NFL."
If you feel that passionate about it, why take the time to click on this thread and comment?
She's the bluebird of happiness... spreading sunshine and rainbows everywhere she goes, lol.
Nobody's perfect, we're all different … we're all on the same planet. Someway, somehow, we need to try to make it work.
KC vs LAR in the Superbowl. That's my prediction.
Strange thing happened...I was busy with work on Sunday during the 1pm games (so couldn't sit on the couch and watch.) Decided to bring up the NFL app and (remembering that they "had" a deal with Verizon), thought I'd watch the locally televised game. I was expecting to watch the Jets (with Giants playing at 4pm.)
I was able to watch Dallas vs Detroit, free of charge. The app did ask me if I had DirecTv (or one other service...which I can't remember right now.) I do have DTV and gave the app my log in info.
Is there a deal with DTV by where you can watch non-locally televised games for free? I don't have the NFL package. Is there a free promo going on?
Are you sure the Dallas game wasn't broadcast locally? I was at work so i have no idea what was on TV during the early games.
Cowboys -Lions game is being rebroadcast on the NFL Network right now - 8pm EST Oct 3rd . Saw it on Reddit NFL streams live , it's nice to be able to DVR it .
ianimal - yeah, it wasn't. I checked to see so I could record it. I usually like to rewatch the game for anything I may have missed the first time around...but only if they won. :-)
Brees wrote a book called Coming Back Stronger, that I'd like to read one of these days … Sports Illustrated awarded him Sportsman of the Year as much for his charitable activities to help New Orleans get back on its feet after Hurricane Katrina, as for his amazing sustained peak performance on the field.
Drew Brees is my favorite QB. After Carson Wentz, of course. He's just a great guy all around. I loved the one mini Brees with the homemade "Brees Jr." jersey!
Yeah, I am so glad we, the Redskins, could help out. Although I didn't think we needed to go that far...…
At least I watched until Drew passed the record, didn't realize what an icon he is so that was nice. Then I threw up and changed the channel
Something tells me it's gonna be another very long year...….
If you have DIRECTV you can watch Tony McGee on MASN or Redskins Nation on NBCsportsWashington … misery loves company. Meanwhile, Touchdown Baltimore on MASN doesn't have any Baltimore touchdowns to talk about this week :-O They should rename the show to Field Goal Baltimore :-D
My all-time favorite commercial endorsement by a football player :-D
Wentz was really clicking on third down passes and the defense was in Eli's face all night … the running back Barkley was all the Gmen had, and he may be the next Herschel Walker, Walter Payton, Marcus Allen …
the best is still ahead for this year's Eagles … and the Giants are headed for another ugly season and another high draft pick … they will be drafting a quarterback :-D
Hmmmm, I guess it's not just fans in Philly....
At a Phillies baseball game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, a group of Philadelphia fans was antagonizing the home crowd with chants of "E-A-G-L-E-S" and "Boston sucks."
By the way, with the University of Oregon quarterback being the most highly regarded college prospect these days, the Giants may start tanking games to get him in the draft … the cheer will be "Suck for the Duck." LOL
Ravens with 11 sacks, winning a shutout against the former superduck QB. They've given up 77 points in six games, by far the fewest in the league. Said the Raven, 'never score.'
First time in a long time I watched football all day. I was visiting family in South Jersey just outside of Philly and we watched mostly all the games.
I 100% disagree with the Titans going for the two point conversion. I call that going for the loss.
My brother decided to go home after the third quarter of the Carolina Philadelphia game with the score 17-0. His quote "...it's over..." I said I do believe there is still another quarter of football to play. His reply? "...believe me CBGB, it's over..."
great comeback by the Panthers and an exciting end to a game I really didn't care who won.
Redskins Cowboys was a good game as well.
But I was truly disappointed when the Browns Buccaneers game was taken off the air during overtime. I know it is the policy but that still sucked.
Steelers went into their bye week in third place and came out of it in first place. Not a bad week off...
The Ravens missed an extra point for the first time in seven years, at the worst possible time! Not a second guess, I wanted the Ravens to go for two, for the win, because … 1. I didn't want Brees to get the ball again and beat us … 2. the offense had momentum and the Saints were having trouble defending the pass … they could have run a trap, counter, or draw, against a spread out defense ... the "ratbirds" were right there with a chance to win ... in OT they would have needed to put together another drive (Jacoby Jones and his 100-yard kick returns are no longer on the roster).
"Redskins Cowboys was a good game as well."
Fun to watch, but not a good game for the Skins at all. The Skins did not win, Dallas lost. We just got lucky to score the W and after years, score a Dallas win.
The team probably heard the loudest cheering that they have heard in years. That's always a good thing to inspire. And it was exciting; everyone was yelling.
Smith has the stuff but loses it in consistency and mistakes. A run out of bounds within 1 minute while not getting the first down and allowing Dallas to save a timeout is something he will be hearing all week and beyond. He has his albatross. High School clock control on that one. His team is the same. They have the stuff but miss tackles, missed opportunities, 4th down attempts when 3 points would have helped.... And how did Prescott keep slipping the grasp; like he was greased or maybe our defense greased their own hands. Of course, again, over and over, they keep letting the opponents back in the game in the 2nd half. Fear of winning is stopping them from gaining an early closure. Lots to work on.
A win is a win, we enjoyed it, would love to rally behind the team but just have that nagging sense we are about to be massively disappointed by their inconsistent play. Would rather have luck than skill but don't want to survive on it.
In the NFC Least, they have as good a shot as anyone right now … still looking for the Eagles to go on a win streak … do they have it in them?
Does not help that "nagging sense" of imminent disappointment...…
So many bad years at this point, it will take a lot of time, and maybe a really obnoxious ring.
So appropriate for this Eagles game to be played in England … those folks are used to watching the ball get kicked LOL
Here we go again. I wonder who will show up? Choking Eli or Deadskins?
I always love games where it's not who won, but who lost the game...…
Consistency --- the hobgoblin of little minds and checkered-results football teams
Eagles got their act together in the second half, at least enough to beat a Jax team that has fallen on hard times. Wentz is a great athlete, but there are times in the NFL when you need to throw the ball away and not try to extend the play -- turnovers could have been really costly today. Now, a bye week and a big home game vs Dallas :-D
Ravens not looking very good in Carolina this afternoon :-O
Second week for the field goal to hit the uprights during the Native American game last week out (dallas), this week in (natives). Poor Eli, does not seem fair, so many sacks. Seemingly great team talents, but can't get it together ---- sure sounds familiar to me and may again very, very shortly.....
Fewer stupid mistakes, most of today's by the Giants, so getting to feel like we are actually playing 4 Q's of football.
Then, the Native Americans still almost found a way to dump an uncatchable lead in the 4th quarter. So, still not getting totally suck in, but getting much, much closer.....
Had to give kicker Way the Emmy for his hurt leg routine on the punt. As he limped off the field, God was actually present, likes the Natives, and we witnessed a football miracle three downs later when Way pushed his replacement off the field and boldly, yes, gamely, shook off the limp and blasted that ball for one of his longest punts.... He then sprinted off the field :>)
We're against the death penalty, but totally for some capitol punishment and if you're gonna fake an injury, fake a personal attack, you're in good company in DC.!
I talked with somebody a few winters back, who worked at a restaurant in the Tampa Bay area and she said, when the Buccaneers were having a miserable season, lots of people were leaving her tickets as tips :-(
The Eagles picked up Golden Tate from Detroit for a third rounder. Nice trade Howie!
The Native Americans played the Eagles pretty tough last year. I consider them legit. The NFL parity rules make it pretty tough to build a team without any weakness, and they make it hard to keep a good, veteran team together.
I've seen a couple of champion Ravens teams taken apart simply because they had to make choices on who to pay and who to let go, which had nothing to do with the individuals' performance, because they would have preferred to keep everybody.
Yes, we had the skills last year, but could not get it together to be top tier.
So many years, so many skilled tribes that went down in flames. Just a little shell shocked after the last decade given that when we win three-in-a-row, it's like a hundred year flood record...… A couple more wins, and once again I will be lost in the frenzy.
Did wonder why Smith over Cousins.....glad to see Cousins getting good play, a TV ad, --- he deserves it. He was skilled, just couldn't get it together in DC.....
But even in our worst year, we can still give the Giants, Cowboys, and Eagles fits, and vice-versa in our best years. I do love this division and would be a Giants or Eagles fan in a second if the Natives did not exist. Especially the Giants who give me that Natives feeling every time I watch. Never a Cowboys fan however; that's a bridge too far....
A lot of people said Cousins "overachieved," whatever that's supposed to mean. Guess that means he was better than people expected.
Cousins is known for choking in big games . He's like Tony Romo in that way , but with a stronger arm .
Choking is a harsh word I prefer not to use. Not many people who have actually been in the arena choose to use it.
Everyone on those skins teams choked. Cousins stats say different
No, there appears to never have been a fit, both ways. Cousins, from all accounts, never did anything wrong, he just never seemed 110% invested. 3 years on the bench may have started it. For his six years there, he rented his house... Same with mgt who, at one briefing, called him Kurt —4 times. For the money they paid, they wanted superman and all they got was a great q. Kirk just wanted to win, and it was very hard there. So I saw the term “wary” as being used to describe both sides. A fit issue from both sides and, from what I read, the team caught in the middle without a leader or mgt that believed.
It.happens but didnt seem like a lot of fireworks in this one, just didn’t fit.
Now Theisman, now there’s some personality disorder stories!
I met Joe Theisman's sister at a college party, just like her brother, a chatterbox! Runs in the family :-D
I met him at a cable TV convention signing, no memorable anecdotes, blond aging Tony Curtis was much more friendly. Skipped the graph and we just chatted. Still have the Theisman graph.
The best was the t-shirt story. But the time Joe was dating Kathie Lee, basically the team had disowned him for being such an obnoxious self-centered arrogant jerk. Only Riggins and Mosely would begrudgingly sit with him for meals during training. In this environment, Joe comes in with a "get hot with Kathie Lee" t-shirt for his teamies.
Not long after, a hole developed In the offensive line and LT steamed on through.
Rumor has it that replacement Jay Schroeder immediately gave the line Rolex's and the hole magically disappeared. I never heard any Natives fan blame LT although I have heard them blame the T.... :>)
Romo homers always talk about his stat's and ignore his pathetic lack of playoff success . With all the money the Vikings threw at him , Cousins will go down in NFL history as the game's most overpaid choker .
Cousins is going to need at least one more huge contract to pass such world class chokers as Phillip Rivers ($203M), Matt Ryan ($179M), Matt Stafford ($178M) and his replacement in DC, Alex Smith ($146M). None of them have ever won the big game and all of them have choked when the chips were down.
Cousins is only 30 , plenty of time to rake in hundreds more millions while choking .
He'll be 33 when the current guaranteed contract is up. Projecting anything beyond that is nonsensical speculation... sort of like your non sequitur meme.
The way they overpay and overprotect QBs today it will become commonplace to play into their late 30s . I thought that pic was funny and was far from the worst on the internet on that subject .
Come on, that meme is a piece of art, so many ways you can look at it.
- a statement on his contract-
- a statement on recent "me too" events
- a statement on winning
- a statement on celebrity
and so on and so on.
A lackluster performance today by a Ravens team that needed a win to stay in serious contention. Unlike the two Super Bowl winners, this year's Ravens have no running game.
The Baltimore Buzz now is that Harbaugh's job is in jeopardy, but he can't run onto the field to make a block or tackle somebody, the players have to do that:-(
Next two are at home vs. Cincy and Oakland --- if they lose to Oakland ….
You want lackluster, the skins rule. We were mauled. It was an epic beat down. The fans left early in the fourth. We had more penalty yardage than yards. Our best defense was interference. And now, once again, I have to watch. This was a coaching problem; apparently we were expecting the Eagles and a bird of a different color showed up. A very fast bird, a Falcon. Literally they ran circles around us.
Wonder if Flacco feels Lamar Jackson coming up from behind... a totally different type of QB.. Really, though, no offense at all - so very disappointing this year.
Flacco does not have the players around him that helped him in better years. If the Ravens are out of it by the final weekend or two, I'd like to see Jackson get a couple of starts under his belt. Even Tom Brady came into the league as an understudy -- remember Drew Bledsoe?
That division is still very winnable for the Eagles, and they have several division games left on the schedule.
It's nice to win on the bye week!
Yes, lots of division games for the Eagles. Two extremely tough games though. Saints and Rams both on the road.
Here's to hoping Mr. Tate can give the offense the boost it needs. Sproles is supposed to be back this week and Jernigan was cleared for practice. Still missing some other pieces, but it's go time if they want a playoff spot.
Getting Tate is a really good move. The Sixers tried hoarding draft picks, they called it "the process" but they still are not being taken seriously as an NBA contender. In football, you've really got to have the "win now" mentality, because tomorrow is never promised to anyone and it is always a day away.
There's a reason Dak was a late 4th round pick. Endzone INT was poor decision making. Two sacks he took was because he hung onto the ball too long. Had a chance to throw the ball away on one run out of the pocket but held onto it. Lucky he didn't lose yardage (and ended up with a sack.) Last throw on 4th down out the back of the endzone was terrible. Give the receivers a chance!
I'm not one to put all the blame on the QB but Dak is not good enough. He'll make a play here and there but most times, he's just not a good passer.
With all of this said, playcalling was terrible too. I don't care if the OL isn't playing to elite status. They are still a good OL. There are a plenty of good teams with not-elite OLs.
Ready to move on from the Garrett era. Make Kris Richard the head coach. Get an innovative OC for the offense. What he has done with the defense has been amazing.
Is anyone surprised at all regarding this new info about Jamarcus Russell? Not me. LOL
Bryant will probably catch a TD pass when they play the Cowboys , take the ball out to the star in the middle of the field to celebrate , and idiot coach Jason Garrett will clap ! They don't call him the Princeton Clapper for nothing .
7 year old Cowboys fan sends a letter to Jerry Jones.
The Cowboys need a coach who is willing to be honest, like this, to the media :-D
Jets get whooped. I would have liked to see the QB changed at some point. Why stick with the last gasp vet. Sure the sub is untested but why not. The announcers were almost demanding Bowles be fired.
Rams Seahawks was a fun game to watch.
two snoozers playing tonight maybe I am glad my bedtime is 9pm
Well it looks like the Eagles are going anywhere at all this season. That's what happens when you play like a bunch of clowns.
Well, the Skins played in the Suck Bowl yesterday and, unfortunately we lost. We tried and we tried to suck as much as we could. But, try as we might, we met a suckier team --- the Tampa Sucanneers and they outsucked us and so we won by sucking less once again.
Luckily, we are in the suck division where we lead in......well, you get it.
Averaging close to 70 yards per game in penalties, only Pittsburgh is worse this year. Hey, it's good to lead at something plus it's much easier to look better after this :>)
We have the stuff, we just need to avoid the muff.... (clever, eh?)
A quote from former Hackettstown coach Art Piancone is appropriate here … "I'd rather win ugly than lose pretty." A win is a win... watch a tape of Super Bowl 5 … the Colts did not give back the trophy :-D
The Bucs has 480 total yards yesterday and only managed to score 3 pts. Two fumbles, two interceptions, two missed field goals. What a train wreck!!!
Yeah, well the Skins were a train wreck too. We just wrecked less, and trust me, TB had to work extra hard to beat that...…
We may have the best record, but we are not even close to being a play-off contender even if we get to post season. We have the skills, but have much work to do to stop the mistakes, errors, and frankly ---- in the case of Atlanta, some really bad coaching. We knew they were fast, very fast, and we did not have a plan to defeat that. We couldn't even challenge it.
Nothing sweeter than sitting in a bar in Baltimore surrounded by Ravens fans watching the Steelers kick the ever-loving tar out of Carolina...
Glad you enjoyed the visit, i-man, your business is always welcome in Charm City, the Land of Pleasant Living. Much love and crabcakes!
All the baseball teams in the American League, (and the Red Sox and Yankees' fan bases) enjoyed their visits to Baltimore beyond measure this summer.
The joke down there goes that you can tell when the Yankees' fans are in town, because there is nothing left at the buffets, and there is a ring around the harbor :-D
Ah, those memories of "all you can eat" crabs with Chesapeake Bay. Tasty even with bloody fingers......
Redskins are showing improvement, especially on D. The young guys are coming along nicely and I think they may improve even more when Clinton-Dix gets more familiar with the system. We'll see. Jordan Reed needs to pick it up.
Free NFL ticket was nice on DirecTV yesterday.
That Saints' o-line is really good, probably the best in the league. Brees makes everything look easy. But they should have taken him out earlier, what was he doing still in the game when it is 45-7?
Very strange to me, espically with this weekend coming up.
When I was not as “ long in the tooth” as I am now, I could watch football nonstop.
Thanksgiving morning would begin with the annual HS game “Iona Prep/ New Rochelle” on channel 9 hosted by Marty Glickman in black and white.
I didn’t care about the teams or the quality of the transmission. It was football.
That was followed by the annual Turkey day dbl header- always Dallas and Detroit and some other game.
Then on to college football- one or two Friday games, then a full slate on Saturday.
Full NFL schedule on Sunday, followed by the marquee game-MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL- Howard, Dandy Don and the Giff!
I watched it ALL. Couldn’t get enough.
But now, don’t really care.
I check the scores and watch a little college. But I’ve lost my appetite.
Players are bigger and faster, but despite this, the game has slowed down ( to me).
Pumping in commercials on a split screen during a time out, lengthy review from the booth, stupid touchdown celebrations, penalties, penalties, penalties— stick a fork in me , I’m done.
I’ll watch a little Hockey, UCONN Woman’s hoops, and patiently wait for NCAA hoops- conference tourneys and THE BIG DANCE, which in my opinion, is the purest athletic competition of the year-One and DONE.
Sorry about the lengthy post- but I’ve lost my football “ Jones”.
Three TDs in final 17 minutes, Big Ben gets it done.
You want "ugly win" I'll nominate today's Ravens' game for the prize. Who said a high school/college option offense would not work in today's NFL? … LOL
Poor Alex Smith , breaking his leg 33 years to the day that Joe Theisman broke his leg . Cowboys are back in the hunt playing Washington for first place Thursday . Of course even at 3-7 the Giants are still in it - such is life in the NFC Least .
Well, the Giants need to win six more in a row to finish 9-7 and even then, their fate may rest on one of those goofy NFL tie-breakers.
"Three TDs in final 17 minutes, Big Ben gets it done."
You should have seen the first 43 minutes... he was 10 of 22 for 45 yards and three interceptions.
the Bucs scored 28 points in the second half and the Giants squeaked that one out fer sure.
Carolina goes for the loss and........get it
Dallas is going to the Superbowl!!!
Come back and see if I feel the same way after Hurricane Brees-Kamara-Thomas hit Dallas. :-P
Right now I'd pick New Orleans in the NFC … but things can change, we see that all the time in the "Any Given Sunday" National Football League.
What an awesome game last night.... more entertaining than the rest of the games this weekend combined.
The Saints are unstoppable in their home dome; I'll give them that. I don't see them winning the Super Bowl, though.
"What an awesome game last night"
If it were arena league...the NFL has become a joke...no defense...they'll be grabbing for flags in a few years and do away with linemen.
The two defenses combined to force 7 turnovers and score three touchdowns of their own...
I'm still a game-watcher, but the reasons the NFL is no longer the same for me are, you're never sure what a catch is, what gets penalized … if N.O. finishes as the NFC one-seed, they are really tough to beat in their dome … Super Bowl is another story if somebody's defense can get to Drew Brees, at least get him out of rhythm!
I agree Andy, the refs are more a factor sometimes than the team play plans. How many penalties were there Monday night? wow
The NFL rules are out of whack IMO. Spiking the ball to stop the clock for example. I understand what it is. What I don't understand is how this fits in the rules of the game. If it is a pass then it should be ruled intentional grounding. If it isn't a pass then it should be a fumble. I understand that the rules of the game were changed for that situation, I just don't like it. Which leads me to a play I saw in a Jets game. The ball was fumbled into the end zone which was OK since it wasn't 4th down or near the end of the half. Again I understand the intention but I don't agree. Intentional grounding isn't intentional grounding if you are outside the tackle position and this and that, oi vey.
And the antics are getting out of control. Players acting like they won a playoff game or the superbowl after something as simple as an interception.
But I'll keep watching
Ron Jaworski "Jaws" says a lot of dumb things but one that made me laugh … "I never spiked the ball, I just threw it to the prettiest blonde in the stands."
I am having Thanksgiving at a TV-less house during the Dallas/Skins game. No internet unless I go to the sky, so real time is out on my budget. Feel my pain.
Do they tape these for later playbacks or only for subscription holders?
Anyone posting live during the game will be an angel.
If you don't have access to the internet, what good will posting updates on here do for you?
Will pull from the sky, not the server but due to my service, full stream a kjttle expensive. Text Ok.
There are a hundred sports and news websites that you can check the score of the game on.
Check and see if SiriusXM has a free 30 day subscription going on... you could install the app and listen with earbuds. Also, no TV? What about wifi? Then you dont have to worry about data charges.
Thanks. Yeah, I will find a score page. No wifi, no tv, thus any color commentary here is appreciated. Actors.......
they dont stand for the anthem, therefore I dont watch, dont respect our flag or country and you want me to support you? Sorry not happening
Vegetarian, the meal, not I and I am OOH. Have a good one and stay safe.
I watched Invincible to get in the spirit. Then some D Vermeil so I could be ready to cry....
I watched the game on TV, pretty sure WFAN sportsradio carried the broadcast, it was part of the Westwood One national package. WBAL AM carried it and they have a strong night signal which reaches all of the Mid Atlantic and New England states.
Yeah, radio, you may have heard of it. Well, speaking of the Skins, the turkey wasn't the only thing that was annihilated that evening … the Atlanta Falcons were even worse:-D
I was thinking the same thing as Andy about the radio - even amish country gets radio signals . Or maybe someone there had a phone with unlimited data and could have downloaded the locast.org app which now has 4 more channels (18 total) and simply watched the games . To watch all the games only 2,4,5 would have been needed . That app now has Me tv, Laff Channel , and an all western channel called Grit TV .
MeTV carries Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Perry Mason, the corny 60s version of Batman, Charlie's Angels and a lot of cool old-time comedies like WKRP in Cincinnati … which I turned on while The Saints were blowing out The Falcons. The MeTV website gives you oldies music you can actually sing along to …
Today's music ain't got the same soul, give me that ol-time rock-n-roll :-D
Lamar Jackson wears the same number Trent Dilfer did for the Ravens … fun to watch the new look offense.
The Eagles are the Giants' daddy.
My Cowboys turn in the best defensive performance of the year - OF ALL TEAMS IN THE NFL . Question is was it a one off or harbinger of things to come ? Meanwhile legendary head scout Gil Brandt gets inducted into the Cowboys Ring of Honor at halftime .
Surprised as heck that a blatant helmet-to-helmet cheap shot with intent did not get called late in that game (leading with the helmet, not a "natural" tackle) ...against the Cowboys. There were some really dumb penalties late in that game, stuff that will need to get cleaned up in practice (long break before the next game) … Parcels always preached playing great defense in December in order to win championships, we'll see how consistently this Dallas team will play in the big upcoming games and how smart they will be.
Nobody getting on the Native Americans' case about picking up a player freshly charged with domestic abuse?
Dallas' defense played lights out but they've been playing great all year (with the exception of the Titans game.) I'm not entirely shocked Dallas won but am totally shocked at the low score. I thought it would be a 31-28 type game.
Bad missed calls by the refs for both teams in the second half. Real sloppy officiating. At the end of the day, both teams got favorable calls (offensive pass interference in the endzone anyone?) Too late now for N.O.
Onto Philly. Whatever happens, Dallas can't lose this one. If somehow they end up with the same record, Philly will have the div tie breaker. They can lose vs Colts, just not vs Philly.
Ravens are fumbling and stumbling through an ugly first half … why do I watch? :-o
RG III got some action, Tucker booted some field goals, defense made plays, the hay is in the barn for the Ravens.
Well, if it wasn't over for the Redskins after losing Alex Smith, it's definitely over now. I wonder what other bottom feeder they will pick up to back up Mr. Butt Fumble......not much else available. Kaepernick?
Very harsh.... let the guy get a few practices in.... But yeah, looks bleak. Add one more year to our decades of sorrow.
Harsh? Do you forget that my team was stuck with Mr. Butt Fumble for 8 starts back in 2014? He had a QBR of 57.5 and that was his "best" season stat wise. Eeek!
The Eagles are 5-for-5 when going for two … last night it was big, making it a two-score game … then "The Giant Killer" made it a two-touchdown game … Sanchez is still in the league while Kaepernick is not … many may not like what Kaepernick did (I certainly would have preferred a different way to protest, I would have advised him that kneeling at the anthem would detract from and cloud his intended message) but it was not violent … a lot of guys with violent felonies in their history are still playing. Go figure.
Hey, he was the only guy willing to come to work that day...…but still --- he gets one more chance before he's on the bone pile. Everyone deserves a come back rally. Even Lazarus.
Yeah, DC would have had a "values" issue with Kaepernick --- you do know what city we play for, right? Remember what our name is, right? That would be the sweetest irony around :>)
Nice Lazarus reference … bless you, you're a good man. Y'know that Redskins name has been around forever … even before I started watching the games over 50 years ago … don't recall Martin Luther King or Bobby Kennedy ever saying anything about it … and they were such great civil rights crusaders who I'll admire forever.
If you didn't see Derrick Henry's touchdown run during the Titan v Jaguars game last night, you really missed a fun play! He moved to score!
My son has been a Titans fan since day 1. He was hosting a work dinner last night. Too bad, as he missed a rare win :)
Did they both like the name? Or did they have other things to think about, And yes, both I and the name have been around forever. Just equating the name issue with the K mans evil sin to say DC could probably weather the K. It was a joke.
But yeah, retire the name, stick with Sanchez, go from hero to zero, I will still be a fan. Its what we do.....
I do believe King and Kennedy had more important things to concern themselves … Henry's 99 yard touchdown was either the greatest run in NFL history, or the worst tackling.
My favorite memory of Eagles' games which I have attended, Jaws to Mike Quick, a 99-yard touchdown pass to win the game in overtime. And it was on a great weather day, a November day that felt like September :-D
Giants and Jets both win. Crazy Dolphins play to beat the Patriots. Bears could have the best D. Good Cowboys win and a fun game to watch. Bonus Chiefs Ravens coverage was cool too.
Well as a Skins fan, that was beyond a total disaster. A loss for the record books. Has to be one demoralized group of guys. Maybe Eli can offer emotional support :-)
The Eagles secondary is decimated … maybe they can bring in a decent player from the Canadian Football League. An old high school teammate played in the CFL … when I asked him how he liked it, he said "there's one more guy out there who can hit you" … for those who don't know the CFL has 12 players and three downs … Baltimore is the only US city to win the Grey Cup, in 1995, also the only city to win the NFL, USFL and CFL championships … of course, the latter two would not have happened if the Colts had stayed in town.
Didn't Nick start his run at the LA Coliseum against the Rams LAST YEAR? Yes, deja vu all over again … possibly :-D
What a win for the Eagles! Underdogs, nobody thinks they can win, with the backup quarterback in there … sound familiar?
Yet another week of of crazy upsets! The Eagles win in LA was great, however the Cowboys being shut out by Indy was almost as good.
The Steelers defense finally stopped someone in the 4th quarter for the first time in a month. The fact that it was the Patriots makes it that much sweeter...
Even though I knew the Ravens could have slid into first place, it was hard to root for the Patriots … just did not feel right to root for the Patriots.
Andy we need the Philly Chickens to win out and the Cowgirls to lose out for Foles 2.0. But it would be a hell of a story.
Philly could also do the wild card ride … the previous three Eagles' Super Bowl appearances all came when they had home field throughout the playoffs, but this year, who knows? Wild cards have reached the Super Bowl before.
The fat lady is getting close to singing in regard to the Eagles 2018 season. They need to win out and need help, just to get a wild card berth. A tall order.
Nick Foles > Carson "Made of Glass" Wentz...
Pretty sure that's the first time I've ever typed those particular words, lol.
For the first time it seems like the Browns might actually be on the right track!
The Ravens are in for a rough game. After all these years, Cleveland is putting together a really competitive team worthy of NFL membership.
How about that Nick Foles … whether the Eagles make it in or not, Sunday's game was a memorable one for the ages.
Fingers crossed for Baltimore - will be a rough game for sure - Cleveland is growing up! Not so impressed by Jackson - afraid he may be another injury-prone Michael Vick-type player - what do you thing Andy - is he too young to really be evaluated, is he likely to mature into a player with more than the default run capacity?
I think that the Eatles plays differently with Foles at the helm... I wonder if they have more confidence in Foles - or are more comfortable with him as a leader?
Jackson got his opportunity due to the injury to Flacco, and he's run with it (pun intended) … the Ravens have done well with drafting linemen on both sides of the ball over the years and that's more of a factor in their recent success, Jackson has been the beneficiary of having teammates who are well equipped for a running game … and ball control has helped the defense … they are fresh because the offense rarely has gone three-and-out.
Ultimately, to be a successful NFL QB long term, Jackson's passing game will have to improve … this whole situation reminds this old Baltimore Colts fan of the time in 1965 when John Unitas went down with an injury and the Colts had to face the Green Bay Packers of Vince Lombardi in a play off game "on the frozen tundra" with Tom Matte at QB. You can look that one up on google if you're interested in some NFL history.
So... when do pitchers and catchers report?
Just kidding... looking forward to a big weekend of wild card football. Two intriguing matchups in each conference.
The Phillies spent big bucks on a closer … Manny Machado and Bryce Harper are still available … oops that's for some kind of hot stove thread.
Now that the Chargers have already seen what the Ravens do with their revamped offense, will be interesting to see what kinds of adjustments they make. If the offense is ineffective in the first half, will they go to old playoff veteran (he's got a good playoff win/loss record) Joe Flacco?
That off-the-field diva drama and distraction must have taken its toll on the Steelers … hard to believe Big Ben is not in the playoffs after the amazing season he had.
Against the spread, I like the Texans at -1.5, the Seachickens at +2.5, the Chargers at +3 and the Iggles at +6.5.
Straight up, I'm taking the Texans, Seahawks, Chargers and Bears.
Oh look, Ray Lewis on before the game today. Hope he dosn’t have to throw that suit away.
Wasn't that fun? I'd say that Golden Tate deal paid off … The Eagles stay alive :-D Nick Foles continues to come up big under pressure.
Best of luck to the Chargers at New England next week … they certainly had the right game plan to shut the Ravens down … would going to Flacco in the second half have turned it around sooner? Maybe.
I don't know if Flacco could have salvaged the game, but I was surprised that he wasn't put in after Jackson's poor showing in the first half....
Eagles nail biter!! Usually I don't like the "ice the kicker time out" but this time it proved to be a winning decision!! WOW
Eagles are a scrappy team this year. I was not a fan of them for a while over the Vick dog abuse thing, that really bothered me, but that is a done deal now, let bygones be bygones. I was hoping they won today (no money on the table) and a win is a win.
This is a pretty good NFL season without all of the politics from last year as a distraction.
"If I were Harbaugh, Flacco would have started the second half, without question."
I said the exact same thing. They were -2 passing through the first half. Not sure what they were thinking.
Pleased with the Eagles win, although those two Foles INTs were not good. They made it come down to that missed FG.
Anyway, on to NO. Won't be a repeat of the last game, I can tell you that for sure. What a controversy in my household. Yikes! LOL
personally, I think there is more going on there than we know. it just didn't make sense. maybe he's become the knoblauch of the nfl. not that he was great to begin with.
If they had lost, the Flaco decision would have haunted him....
Congrats Calico, given the Skins demise, couldn't ask for a more entertaining team to take their place, or one of the two places they "passed" on..... Well deserved for the SB champs. First half a bit boring, second half for the books ---- for so many things. Can't wait for NO, best luck.
One thing that scares me, hoping for the Eagles to continue embracing their underdog role -- the Bears made a lot of big pass plays with their receivers running double-move routes... and nobody is going to mistake their QB for Joe Montana ... Brees is probably licking his chops while watching the film.
Well, the Ravens lost to the Saints by a point, the only missed PAT in Justin Tucker's career … so you can stay with the Saints if you play good defense … but that game was in Baltimore … the Saints really catch fire at home.
Eagles in a 49-48 shootout … in addition to Foles' brilliance, I like the birds' receivers … they really go get the ball, it does not have to be a perfect throw for them to catch it … Eagles win on a Hail Mary after recovering an onside kick ... that would be FUN :-D
The Eagles need their pass rush to come up big and make Brees feel the heat … can't leave that inexperienced secondary exposed. Looking forward to a great game :-D
For a team that was left for dead the Eagles made an exciting season of it.
So many injuries but they still had one final shot at it … and they only got called for four penalties, ON THE ROAD, they deserve credit for that. Now we go back to what do the birds do with Foles next year?
Hi Calico … if Andy Reid gets to the Super Bowl, would you root for him to finally win one? I've always liked the Eagles (Baltimore did not have a team during the Randall Cunningham/Buddy Ryan/Rich Kotite/Reggie White/Mike Golic era) and I'm interested to see if the hard core lifelong birds fans have any shred of regard for him. As for me, how could I not root for a fat guy named Andy? :-D
Good game, IMO, Eagles can be proud; they didn’t lose, scared the heck out of them, Saints just won. Great year for Superbowl winners, no apologies. Thanks for the game.
Andy Reid has to make it to the Super Bowl for that question to be relevant. As far as I know there is still one more game to play before that.
I did say that important word …. if … but the Chiefs are at home, they have a chance.
You wouldn't be rooting for Tom Brady, would you? That would make me feel very deflated LOL … Tom Brady, another guy who vigorously defended himself before the onslaught of investigations!
I would never root for Brady or the evil Cheatriots ever. Well, maybe if they were playing the Cowgirls in the SB. ;-)
I'm rooting for the Saints as of now. If it turns out to be Rams/Chiefs, we will see.
Now that the Eagles have landed, it’s all Saints day for me. Patriots will be tough though.
Good to see all the top seeds advance
Good to see Tom Brady and THE Patriots start their post season with a kick ass win
Sunday will be FUN!!!
One thing I like about the Patriots … the "Flying Elvis" logo. The earlier colonial soldier in position to snap the ball was a cool one, too, but they weren't a winning team in those days, not consistently, anyway.
Love this meme! LOL
Should be a couple of good games Sunday. I'm an NFC guy and like Drew Brees. Hopefully it will be an epic game. If Anderson bulls his way like last week, the Rams could roll.
I gotta say that young man Patrick Mahomes in KC is a gamer for sure. I would love to see Brady sit on the field like a child as he does when things turn south. He can watch someone else hoist the Lamar Hunt AFC Championship trophy this year.
Great map. I hate the Pats.
I sure hope my cable doesn't go out because of the storm. It would suck to miss the games.
Hate to say it, but LET'S GO PATS!!!
I put a $100 parlay on both road dogs to win outright at +480. The Sheep hit on the front end for me. So if the Pats win, I will have $580 more than i do if they lose, lol.
If it weren't for two BS pass interference calls that they got against the Steelers that resulted in two touchdowns, the Steelers would have made the playoffs. So, I've got zero sympathy that they didnt get one that they SHOULD have (-;
The Saints beat the Ravens by a point on the only missed conversion kick of Justin Tucker's career. They've had their share of lucky breaks.
So tired of the Patriots
Wow kc was great and so were the Patriots. Even my self being a Patriots fan for a lot of years I wanted to see KC make the win to nights game was Super Bowl quality was a game to watch
Andy Reid did win a Super Bowl championship ring as a Green Bay assistant, anyway
The KC pass rush was basically non-existent, surprised they didn't blitz Tommy boy. He had all day sitting in the pocket.
Andy Reid will never win anything. That blown call in the Saints game sucked big time. That said, GO RAMS!
If it happens on the field it should be reviewable. That has been my opinion since the review system was put in place. After this weekends games just maybe the NFL will make penalties missed or wrong calls reviewable. After all the goal is to get it right isn't it.
Exciting games even with or because of the dreadful officiating. Brady IMO is the greatest all time player.
Glad I didn’t bet on these playoffs. Voted with my heart. I am deflated:-)
This years superbowl: crazy vs crooked. New vs old. East vs West. Swamp vs Smog.
I've always believed when it comes to choosing all-star teams (I've had experience with that as local media) and Hall of Fame voting … you can't let personal feelings color your evaluation of someone's performance on the field. Certainly, if a coach wants to win, he has to play the best players regardless of who he likes or dislikes personally or who the kid's parents are. You can't argue with Brady's results … besides, when KC went ahead, I knew in my gut that Brady was going to bring his team back and win the game... he is THAT GOOD. I don't know the guy other than what I hear on talk shows etc. … if I walked a mile in his shoes and got to know the guy, I might even get to like him. Never know.
There have been many seasons in which the Eagles beat the eventual Super Bowl champion during the regular season … they've done it to Dallas, the Redskins, the Giants and my Ravens … this season on Dec. 16 they beat the Rams 30-23 … "I love LA"
My song for the next two weeks … I love LA :-d
Screw the Rams. Go Patriots! Lol.
Seriously though, Brady is the greatest player to play the game ever.
I would agree that Tom Brady is the greatest QB of all time... but all-time greatest player, IMO, is Jerry Rice. No one has dominated a position like he did.
"His 1,549 career receptions are 307 receptions ahead of the second place record held by Tony Gonzalez. His 22,895 career receiving yards are 6,961 yards ahead of the second place spot held by his former 49ers teammate Terrell Owens. His 197 career touchdown receptions are 41 scores more than the second place record of 156 touchdown receptions by Randy Moss, and his 208 total touchdowns (197 receiving, 10 rushing, and one fumble recovery) are 33 scores ahead of Emmitt Smith's second place total of 175. He also threw a touchdown pass against the Atlanta Falcons in a 1995 regular season game. His 1,256 career points scored make him the highest-scoring non-kicker in NFL history. During a career spanning two decades, Rice averaged 75.6 receiving yards per game"
John Riggins for both on and off the field football legendary moments.
"Lighten up Sandy Baby...…" Can you imagine that one today. Me-too :>)
Lots of people agree with Ian … Rice has rings and records and really stands apart … coaching also plays a major role in the success of players … Rice and Montana had the great Bill Walsh. Continuity of coaching … if you're playing for a different coach each year, you don't know which end is up.
Jerry is great no doubt but he also had 2 HOF QBs throwing the ball. Randy and TO might have come closer if they didn't go all psycho towards the ends of their careers.
I'll stick with Brady. 9 SB appearances, 8 straight AFC championship games in a salary cap era designed to keep that from happening. He's done it with a star here and there but also done it with nobodies around him more often than not.
I became a Brady convert after seeing what he did to the Falcons in the Super Bowl. And yes I think he has passed Rice as the best ever.
but this picture "rings" a bit true
honestly, the eagles are in the same division as those teams mentioned. they play twice a year. now if the eagles beat the super bowl champs both times during the regular season then that would be something
In the 80s and 90s that was a great division. No easy games, ever. Michael Vick beat the Ravens with a late TD in the 2012 game … since it was the Eagles, I remember saying to myself, hey, this might be our year :-D
Brady almost missed out on this Super Bowl, which Eli Manning ended up winning.
Brady may be a great player, but he is a sore loser.
He did not shake hands with Nick Foles at last year's Super Bowl.
Just found out that he played 8 super bowl games. Won 5.Lost 3.
He did not shake hands with Eli Manning either when the Giants won 2 Super Bowls.
I'm curious why the Saints fans arent up in arms about the blatant facemask penalty against Goff that would have set the Rams up with a 1st and goal at the 1-yard line on the drive immediately preceding the missed pass interference call. I guess missed calls only constitute "robbery" when they go against you.
The Saints also, like the Pats, had everything in their hands when they won the coin flip and got the ball to start overtime. Unlike Brady, Brees chucked up an awful ball that got picked off and Zeuerlein did the rest. That was a kick for the ages. Saints fans may and probably should supplant Seahawks fans as the biggest whiners in the league.
Another eventual SB champ the Eagles beat during the regular season was the 1980 Oakland Raiders. Guess who beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl? Oakland Raiders :-(
In 1979 the Eagles beat the Steelers during the regular season, then the Steelers went on to win yet another SB championship … the Steel Curtain owned that decade.
Look! An awesome person in the NFL. Great sentiment.
Tom Brady can tie Jim Kelly for all-time most Super Bowl losses with 4 if the Rams win. Then, his overall SB record of 5-4 wouldn't look all that impressive... if you happen to ignore how amazing it is to get to 9 SBs in 18 years.
He would also be 2-4 in his last 6 appearances. (could have been 1-5 if not for the choke of the ages by Matt Ryan and the Falcons... and 0-6 if Pete Carroll just would have fed Beast Mode).
Joey Mo would once again get a lot more support when it comes to talk of GOAT. "Sure Brady can win the crappy AFC every other year, but , when the chips are down... I want Montana in the Big Game"
...but one of Montana's wins came at the expense of a massive no show by Denver, no?
At the end of the day, you win by playing well regardless of whether the other team chokes or not. It's not like Atlanta stayed in the locker room after half time. Brady also marched his team down the field to take the lead in the win over Seattle. If they lost, it would be on the defense and not on Brady. Team sport.
The Patriots dynasty of 10+ years in a free agency-salary cap era is more impressive than anything before and during it. We may never see another dynasty like this.
Saw some video of Tom Brady playing Hamlet -- the guy has a future as an actor … win or lose he will be mulling over … "to retire, or not to retire..." … have to give him credit that he kept winning after they no longer had Aaron Hernandez … they no longer had all their "weapons."
On that Rams play against the Saints … I thought that guy had a great shot at an interception if he'd only looked for the ball … he was so intent on slamming the receiver … I don't get it.
A rather dull game imo. I never felt the Rams were going to win this game by mid second quarter. Romo is way too raw to be a Super bowl announcer. He is QBing/coaching the game when he should be announcing or talking about the game.
Super Bore. The NFL is a classless joke that has gone the way of the WWE. I think the Maroon 5 joke sums it all up.
I enjoyed the game - tense defensive struggle, some great plays by Julian Edelman. And I agree with CBGB about Tony Romo; I got sick of listening to him.
I guess technically the Rams didn't deserve to be there. But that's another discussion of this league of losers. It was the equivalent of the underdog pinning the champ in wrestling but the ref was knocked out and didn't see the pin. Classic WWF. Go back and watch a game from the mid 70's. Football is unrecognizable today.
I figured the Pats would win prior to the game starting, however it was cemented in my mind when the camera panned to Jared Goff during the National Anthem. His hand was shaking and he looked like he was going to pass out. I turned to my husband and asked if he saw it. He said yes. I told him that it was not going to be a good game for Mr. Goff.
"Football is unrecognizable today." Yeah, there was that one call on "he tackled him too soon after the catch....." I mean these guys gonna need helmet cam with red/don't, green/do warning lights soon to know when it's OK to hit.
And overtime. "We need to reset the clock 10 minutes back so the refs can explain the overtime rules, again, for 10 minutes...…."
I though the commentators were as good as Madden, if Madden was drunk and passed out.
"I figured the Pats would win prior to the game starting, however it was cemented in my mind when the camera panned to Jared Goff during the National Anthem. Wow, I missed that.... yikes...
Oh well. The GOAT does have a "kryptonite"...
vs Manning 0-2
vs Foles 0-1
At least we Giants and Eagles fans have that! lol
Here's the video of the National Anthem. The show Goff at 0:49.
to be fair to Goff, that was probably Brady's worst game too, Neither QB looked good. Also that hit on Goff right at the sideline would have been a flag if it was Brady.
After 2 exciting Conference Champ Games we get probably the worst SB of all time.
Maybe we can have NO and KC play next week in a consolation game?
The Ravens eliminated the Pats in the playoffs twice, and came darn close two other times … Joe Flacco does have that in his history.
Calico would have liked Johnny Unitas back in the day, they tell tales to this day in the dives and watering holes of Baltimore about Johnny U's legendary beer drinking :-D
Jim L -- they did play a consolation game back in the 1960s, before the NFL started adding divisions and created wild cards.
The second place team in the East played the second place team from the West at Miami's Orange Bowl … as the second place team from the West, behind Vince Lombardi's Packers, the Baltimore Colts won this game in 1966 and 67 (35-0 over Dallas and 20-14 over the Eagles) … go figure that Baltimore was from the West and Dallas was from the East … guess the NFL never was very good at reading a map.
I'm sticking with SB VII as still the worst. Sure Miami completed their perfect season but the highlight was the garo yepremian pass attempt resulting in Washingtons only score in this snoozefest 14-7 game.
I think excitement for the N.F.L. and the Super Bowl is a thing of the past. It’s far from the N.F.L. That I grew up with.
For this old timer, the worst Super Bowl games were the four that Minnesota lost, the one where Dallas beat Denver (January of 78), and the blowouts.
If I were a Giants fan, the Ravens' 34-7 romp over the Gmen in Supe 35 would be at the top of the list (the only Super Bowl game the Giants have ever lost) … the Ravens made winning ugly an art form that year while just totally shutting down the opposition … said the Raven "never score" … if I wasn't such a Baltimore guy I would have totally despised that team :-D
Yes, Mr. Yankees classy outfielder from the 60s and 70s … story out that Joe Flacco is going to Denver … done deal, just a matter of which round draft pick the Ravens get in the transaction.
If he stays healthy all year, Super Joe could lead the Broncos back to glory … with that defense he'll feel the way he did when guys like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed had his back.
With Flacco's destination set, the Giants must be thinking about making a move on Foles, no? Or will they take one last chance with Eli?
Foles will not go to Balt.?
Maybe u were lucky enough to hear Frank Messers call, full of cadence...hit to left...Roooy White makes the play.
I'd be THRILLED to see Foles go to Baltimore but they seem committed to Lamar Jackson and that "Wildcat" style offense that works better in college than the NFL. Frank Messer … there's a real old school baseball broadcaster … called O's games with Chuck Thompson before he went to New York to do the Yankees.
Frank Robby's catch of a woulda-been Roy White walk-off homer in 66 is quite a memory … Frank fell back into the stands and I've seen it on video several times … he said the fans were trying to pull the ball out of the glove … all I know is he hopped back onto the field with the ball in his glove … the ump said "out" and the game was over. Hard to believe that was over 50 years ago … I was in high school!
I know it is a football thread, but here is that Frank Robinson play at Yankee Stadium..
Robert Kraft has been charged with solicitation of prostitution.
He was caught on video during a sting operation for human trafficking - not a good look for the NFL . Anyone watching the AAF league ? Some of those games are pretty entertaining with players competing hard for another shot at the NFL .I especially like the bombs away offense of the Orlando team .
I've been watching the AAF. If it seems we have enough interest here, I will start a thread. My husband and I chose the Memphis Express as our team (obviously not looking like the best choice so far.....LMAO) since nothing was local. We have enjoyed the games so far.
The Memphis Express have sure shown why the Jets never played their second round pick QB Christian Hackenberg . By the same token I wonder what flaw 27 year old Orlando QB Garrett Gilbert has that cost him his backup spots in the NFL ? So far he's chuckin' the rock 50 yards or more down the field with ease and right on target .
B/R live is an app owned by Turner Sports and is free until June . I will probably check to see if the game (if it's one I want to watch) is on aaf.com or watch it on reddit aaf streams on the computer rather than order an app and cancel it in May . Or I may just check to see if getting the app on Roku doesn't require giving them credit card info .It was a real PITA to cancel Sirius once they had the cc info - almost canceled the card before they finally answered my email .
Unlike the Netflix Marvel shows which were living on borrowed time since Disney announced it would launch it's own streaming service . Yep they canceled Punisher and Jessica Jones . Don't care about any of them except Punisher and Daredevil , both of which had really good last seasons . Hopefully Disney will continue them as the Netflix exposure gave them a built in fan base .
Calico, do you remember the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars in the USFL? … a most successful franchise on the field, went to the finals all three years of the league and won two titles... attended some of the games and watched the rest of them on TV.
Many players went on to the NFL. They signed all the Penn State guys they could, figuring they had a great football education. Turned out to be a good plan.
Jim Kelly(his Houston Gamblers were my favorite USFL team) and Steve Young were a couple of other USFL players who had Hall of Fame NFL careers . If you liked the USFL Andy read the book Football For A Buck . The Warren County library has it and it's hilarious ! Don't know if this league will survive , but I'm going to enjoy it while lasts . BTW pretty much every game is on the aaf.com website .
Thanks. This new league looks like an NFL Triple-A league. The USFL seriously went after top talent … many owners hoped their franchise would be taken in by the NFL in some sort of merger.... that never happened.
We'll see if someone from the AAF makes a big NFL impact next year, that would give it a real boost.
A lot of the USFL franchises had a problem competing with major league baseball for attendance during the spring in the large markets … the Phillies were a World Series team during the time the Stars were there, with household names like Rose, Schmidt and Carlton … cities like San Antonio, Orlando … those are perfect for this kind of league. In 1983 the 76ers were World Champs (playoffs lasted throughout May) … the Flyers were a playoff team … lots of competition for the entertainment dollar
