Are bookstores even a viable business at this point?
The last few times I went to B&N in person, they didn't have the book I wanted and told me that they'd order it and I could drive back to Roxbury when it came in. I said no thanks and ordered it from Amazon and saved myself the 25-mile round trip.
New. I love the store. There are a couple of leather chairs and the fireplace is always going. Good selection, nice music.
As I've mentioned before, I don't really read books, I listen to them on CD. I never pay full price for books anymore, I order from Amazon and buy them used, like new for a fraction of the cost. I buy both books & books on CD this way.
The Book Loft is a new-book bookstore and is pretty good. They don't have a huge selection, but if they don't have a book they will look it up for you and have it ordered and in the store in a couple of days. No shipping, no extra cardboard packaging. And they gift-wrap for free.
Oh, and there's a nice little area for the kids, too -- I think it's important to have books for sale in your town, and a place where kids can learn the value of books. Of course, there's the library, but bookstores can be fun, too. I admit, we buy a lot of books, but we like to own our books as well as "rent" them. We spend a lot of time in used bookstores, too -- usually when we're out of town, as there aren't many good ones around here. That being said, I'm not sure another book store -- or even a used bookstore like the one that's in the cooking lessons spot across from ShopRite -- can survive in this town. Sad but true.
There used to be a used bookstore in Chester, not sure if it's still there though. Problem for me is most books are so expensive. If you're buying a best seller or something that you just want to read once, to pay $20-$25 is a lot of money for me. Now if I buy it used in good condition for $15 including shipping, it's worth it. I bought a used Barbie reference book that was $25. new, I paid $13., shipping including. Of course, you're not getting instant gratification like going to the book store, but that's ok for me. By the way, if anyone uses the Hackettstown Library for books on CD, if you haven't been there in a while, they have quite a few new books to listen to.
You know Hackettstown is a decent sized town. We have all the usual age groups. Why is is so hard for a business to succeed? There is always lots of traffic down and around Mountain Ave and Main St. Is it the convenience factor maybe. People want easy quick access to stores or eating places.
When I was a stay at home Mom we used to go the the Library at least once a week. I used to look forward to it. It was not convenient going there but this was before we had the new annex on Rt 46 in Independence.
Here is where I sound like an old fart but everyone is always in such a hurry wanting the quickest food whether it is nutrious or not. The cheapest products - one stop shopping. I think it is about not having enough time. Time seems to be in short supply for most people.
It was brought up before, but the entrance/exit to the Boston Market property is dangerous. I noticed that even before I moved here. A Starbucks makes no sense here. Most of the morning traffic is moving east and traffic that comes off of 517 (with a nearly constant right turn green light) is fairly constant. Even if someone is nice enough to let you in front of them on 57 E, you are likely to get slammed by someone flying around the corner off of 517. Even turning right out of there can be dangerous.
traffic is easy to fix, ie: they could extend their driveway to connect to the building next door. The diner is doing a great business and has similar issues. I know several people who would like to see a drive thru starbucks
JustAsking, I do hear that Warren County Library has a nice selection of books on cd. Unfortunately, Hackettstown residents can't use it. We can pay to join, but not use it for free. Hackettstown Library has gotten quite a few new ones though.
yeah whats the deal with H-town residents not being able to use the Warren County Library. That is so stupid. Correct me if Im wrong but H-town is in Warren County right?! I went to rent movies from the Htown Library and the selection was very limited. However the County Library has alot of great movies. Does anyone have an answer as to why we cant use it? The person at the County Library said because we just can't. Um is that an answer. lol
