Stolen laptop

Is there anyway to trace a stolen laptop to all you Tech
Experts out there? My daughter's apartment was broken
into and they stole her laptop. I know this is far
reached, but I thought it was worth a try for I want
these thieves to fry ;) Tx

Not after the fact that I know of.

When my daughter went to college we put laptop lojack on hers.

That was 5 years ago, there may be something new now. Rich?

"Lo Jack" sold the laptop part of the business to a different company that now calls it "Absolute Notifier". It's the same product just a change in ownership.

Current web site:

And if you didn't already guess, I'm a user. It's $12 a year which as a business expense is nothing. I think anyone with a reasonable investment in their laptop should get some kind of service like this.

This is a slim chance, but if the computer wasn't locked and your daughter uses gmail, and the thief logs into the gmail account, she can use Google to find out the IP address of where it was logged in. Otherwise, like was already said, unless she had some kind of security software made for that purpose, it will be close to impossible to track it.

There is always the possibility that the thief will continue doing stupid things and will eventually get caught, in which case it may be recovered.

Just found a good article on how anyone can enable their Windows 10 computer to track it's location, so you would know where it was if it was lost or stolen.

It won't help anyone who's device has already been lost or stolen, and won't let you do all the features of the software like what GC mentioned, but it will give you the location, which may help.

Password changes are very important if the computer didn't have a password when it boots up. Cloud data, credit card websites, Amazon, etc. where she possibly saved the password so she didn't have to log in every time.
