Urgent recommendations needed for transmission work
Jrsemom had to rescue me from the side of the road last night. The old van's transmission decided it didn't like its fluid anymore and vomited it up all over Continental Drive. Of course, it was 9:30PM, pitch black and in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks to Officer Laver of the NJ Park Police for hanging around with me until she showed up.
Now it's time to find someone to fix it. I'm pretty sure it's just a gasket/seal/hose as there was no warning and did start to work after adding fluid into it. Just leaks everywhere. PLEASE let it be cheap!
Anyone in H'Town have recommendations for repairs? I've been looking at the normal places for reviews and get very mixed results. At this point, I'm thinking Steve's Pit Stop but don't know if he does that work.
Highly Highly recommend Bill's Service Station on Rt 46. Completely honest and excellent work.
Do NOT go to Scotty G's. He ripped me off big time.

While most of those folks are good overall mechanics, most times you want a real specialist for any transmission work.
Go to Dean's Transmission in Stanhope. HL has a number of very trustworthy people all suggesting Vic Dean in two different threads. Yes, some of the other transmission people have mixed reviews. Dean's (formerly Holly) is the one that everyone has said all the best things about.
I have used Tibor at Riverside Imports (at the Shell station next to Dairy Queen) for years. He has always been extremely fair and honest (One mechanic told me I needed a ton of work done, I took it to Tibor for a second opinion, and it turned out there was only a minor problem. I've been using him ever since.)
I can tell you from personal experience that you do not want to use Hackettstown Transmission.
Theres a mechanic I use he has a shop in Johnsonburgh .His name is Bill.201 961 3753.Its a side buissiness he does.Great with prices to.

I agree with Mr. Resident's post about Valley Auto, very nice service, probably best in town
Ted at Valley is very honest and wont rob you! Stay away from the big box mechanics. They told us we blew a head gasket and never did. The car is still running at 202,000. It was a hose quick fix.
I would recommend Valley Auto on Main Street. I've gone to them on a few occasions and they were always priced fairly and got the job done quickly.
Big Plus on Vic Dean at Dean's Transmission in Stanhope. He's the best in the area.
I would definitely advise going to a transmission place rather than a general mechanic shop.
I agree Calico. As an aside,Ted at Valley sends all of his transmission work to Victor in Stanhope.
Victor Dean in Stanhope. Top notch, honest and does the transmission work on our pickups, vans, etc from work.

Soooooo, a friend of mine who worked at Warnock Dodge for years met me at the parking lot at the Sussex Branch Trail Head this evening and gave the transmission a once-over. Turned out, back in August when Firestone replaced the transmission lines, they used the wrong clamps, which he tells me are the wrong clamps to use. Well, the outlet line's clamp snapped. Firestone saved $0.22 on the clamp and I got stranded and got to purchase and use $30 in transmission fluid. Not to worry, they WILL be hearing about this!
I hate to say this Mike, but you've learned the hard way why folks use the Camp's, Kozimor's, or Valley's of the world. The big corp types as well as the dealers go the cheap route and charge the big $ because they're not focused on the long term relationship.
In re hackettstown transmission I was more recommending Brian only not the shop it self
Glad this thread popped up. Need to get work done on basically all struts. I'll check some of these guys over the dealer
