Warren Hills Quarterback Dies after game injury

Please keep the Murray and entire Warren Hills family in your thoughts and prayers today. Last night they lost their three year starting quarterback to an injury sustained during a game against Summit.

If your child attended Warren Hills or knew Evan Murray and needs to speak to a grief counselor, they will be available at the high school today at 9:00am.

How horribly sad. RIP Evan. Condolences to his family and friends.

Just heard about it. So sad. Terrible, terrible tragedy. My heart is so broken today after hearing this. Didn't know the family, but I spent many a days watching my son play football for Warren Hills, years ago, and it just sends shivers down my spine. I can't imagine. Makes you put things in perspective. Will be praying for the entire Murray family. God bless.

I just woke up to the news. A tragedy, someone so young. R.I.P. Evan Murray.

I've seen Evan play three sports and he was a nice fellow, good sportsmanship which is something I value and encourage. My heart bleeds for his family.

Last night I was at Phillipsburg and for today I've been assigned a game in Mendham. I go where my assignments take me and the games go on, but this really puts a cloud over everything.

This has to be very, very hard for Warren Hills coach Larry Dubiel, and also for Bob Lockhart, who worked to develop Evan as a quarterback when Evan was a youth player.

It is hard for everybody who knew him.

Please, everybody who comments, be sensitive.

The family has to be in shock right now.

Oh my word so very sad. Having so many boys myself it makes you sick to think something like sports, that they love, could take them from you like this.

Reggie - Although there are not specifics regarding what exactly the injury was, I'm sure school officials had no idea of the extent of the injury or what the result would be when they continued the game.

Story update:
he walked off the field under his own power. Then later, around halftime, he collapsed on the sidelines. He again got up under his own power, and was put on a gurney and an ambulance too him to Hunterdon hospital, where he apparently passed.

Sounds like a bleeder to me. It wasn't instant, but didn't take long. And by the time the hospital got him MRI'ed or CT'ed or whatever, and knew what was going on, it was too late. My dad died from an aneurism (bleeding inside the brain), so I know a little bit about it.

They live 2 house from mine.
We went there today.
As you can imagine the parents are destroyed, they need a lot of support from the town.
The house has been packed with friends. They are not originally from NJ, so they do not have a lot of family nearby.

My neighbor was killed in Vietnam in 1968, age 20. He would be 67 now, if he'd been lucky enough to avoid the draft.

Saddest funeral service I've ever attended over all these years, still remember it vividly.

His mom took the flag down from in front of her house, started questioning why the USA was in that war, and became a hippie.

A tragedy whenever someone dies young, sincere sympathies to the Murray family..

I lost my son unexpectedly at the age of 22. It is the WORST pain you can have. Unless you have gone through it you know idea what the pain is like. You Never get over you just learn to live with it. The pain never goes away. To Evans family I send my deepest sympathy and prayers. I pray that GOD holds you in the palms of his hands at this sad time and gives you strength.

It turns out that this poor young man died from a ruptured spleen. How awful.

A young player from Florida, who I read about, died from a hit to his liver last fall.

There are some firms advertising lightweight shields that players can wear to protect vital and sensitive areas.

I wrote about one such firm in the middle portion of a column last year.

Oh yes, he is. He helps the owner out at Pasta Grill by Enzo on Route 57 in Washington a lot. He helped them rebuild their sports bar last year.

You could stop by sometime and tell them you extend your regards, if you don't happen to see him.

Sticking to the topic, I've heard it has been suggested that the football field or stadium be named in Evan's honor and memory.

I've seen nice memorials at the Hackettstown and Mendham fields, put up for all to see, that pay tribute to players who were gone too soon. The player memorialized at Hackettstown perished in 9/11. Even people who never knew him cried at the dedication ceremony.

Ah, I was responding to a post that now has disappeared, and this post looks so out of left field. Social media!!

Just got an email from the fellow I was responding to. He was afraid his post was too light hearted to be appropriate for this thread.

I certainly understand the somber nature of the thread, but I thought it was OK.

Really good article on the UK daily mail about this:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3252577/Death-high-school-quarterback-17-said-felt-woozy-tackle-attributed-internal-bleeding-lacerated-spleen.html

So very sad.

So, so sorry snowflake. Can't imagine what parents go through.

Wondering if his spleen was enlarged because of illness or from being hit during practices or earlier games and didn't know it. My son played for the Blue Streaks and injury is always a thought in a parents mind, but always praying it doesn't happen. This just breaks my heart.

So sad that WHRHS lost 3 students in the past 8 months. GOD BLESS ALL THE FAMILIES. I didn't know any of them, but every time I read the stories, they bring tears to my eyes.

Browneyesguy - Please let the Murray family know that all at HL have them in our thoughts and prayers.

An enlarged spleen could be from an illness totally unrelated to football. Not sure if a blow to the spleen could cause it to be enlarged, but if it's possible it could have occurred in an earlier game or practice, or from a injury totally unrelated to football. Pretty sure being hit in an enlarge spleen isn't probably a good thing. However it occurred it is a terrible loss for the family and the community. Prayers to the family.

I was thinking the same sam. No matter what the reason, we are all saddened by this.
Tears and prayers for his family and friends.

I went to Music for Murray today and it was marvelous.

The Hackettstown Marching Tigers, color guard and cheerleaders really rock!!

The Warren Hills Blue Streaks marching band and color guard, H-town Community Band, Colonial Musketeers, Trinity Ringers (making magical sounds playing the bells), Cuchullain Bagpipe Band from Morris County, and Slattery School of Irish Dance also were truly entertaining. Kudos to all.

It was really nice at the finish, when they all joined together to perform Amazing Grace.

So many people united for a great cause. They raised about $1,500.
