Strange bird

This bird has been spotted in my backyard in Independence twp. Can anyone identify it? I've never seen it before. Thanks.

I think you are right. Why are they here? There are two. Shouldn't they be near the shore?

They are probably coming from Alumni Field.

Speaking of birds - is there any bird expert out there?
I saw what I believe was a female cardinal chewing for the longest time on a red flower petal from a red begonia plant in my yard.
She didn't eat it, just chewed it for a long time.

Are you sure it was not a poppy???

Poppies are early flowers and long past. Most are brown, dried, shriveled, and on the ground at this point.

Green herons frequent inland waterways, not the shore.

I guess they think my pool is their inland waterway. Lol.

The begonia is in a pot and she was standing next to it with the flower petal in her beak, chomping away.

The Hackettstown Hatchery is loaded with green herons. Maybe they nested in your area. Pretty cool.

I never knew they were in the area but yes, I do think they are nesting nearby. It is so awesome!

They were both in my backyard for 4 days during the beginning of the month. Looked really silly when perched on my umbrella clothesline! Sadly, now all my garter snakes, ribbon snakes and tree toads seem to have disappeared! We had so many this year, were tripping over them.
