American Sniper

Went to Bow-Tie cinema to watch the 8:00 show on Sat. night, but it was sold out completely. Ended up watching Taken at 8:20. Family behind us did too. Make sure your early if your gonna watch this one on the weekends................ maybe it was a snow thing....lol

Yes, same thing here. Saw "Theory of Everything" instead. Acting was superb, but not the kind of movie for everyone.

We saw American Sniper this past week and even then people were hanging out the doors waiting to get their tickets for the show. When we did get in we had to sit pretty far upfront but we did get a seat. All I can say is try again...It was perhaps one of the best movies we have ever seen. Runner up is Unbroken...

HINT:

pre-buy your tix online. That at least gets you past the line at the ticket booth.

We got there 30min ahead of time, and that was only 5 minutes before they opened the doors to the theatre, and there was already a LONG line waiting. I bought popcorn and got to the theatre just as they opened the doors.

>>Saw "Theory of Everything" instead. Acting was superb, but not the kind of movie for everyone.<<

Searched it on imdb. The trailer looks good, and their suggested movie "trailers" (Imitation Game, Still Alice, WIld) look pretty cool , too!

I must not be "everybody."

I consider that a good thing...so, thanks for the post, Joyce!

Saw Theory of Everything and LOVED it! Highly recommended. Keep in mind, the movie is more about Hawking's relationship with his wife than he himself and all that he is known for just so you don't leave disappointed.

Definitely looking forward to seeing American Sniper as well, might wait for it to come out on DVD to rent since the theaters have been a madhouse for it.

Read the book, can not wait to see movie!

Went at 1400 on Saturday. Theater was packed, but managed to grab a seat. Definitely, one of the best movies I have seen.

Kris, I haven't seen the movie yet, but it seems like one of those that benefits most from the large screen and premium sound. I think much of its impact will be lost on a smaller screen. Try the Regal at Pohatcong if you're having trouble seeing it locally; it seems to be much less crowded typically.

When the movie ended you could hear a pin drop. Very moving movie. He was a true hero.

Same experience as jm62. After the movie ended there was complete silence and nobody jumped up to leave like they usually do. When everyone did start to exit it was somber and slowly. I think the movie affected every person in the theater.

Good call ianimal, I'll try my luck there on a week night if it can swing it

Kudos to Gary Sinese for "getting it"

http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2015/01/27/howard-dean-trashes-american-sniper-viewers-gary-sinise-fires-back/

People don't realize that the point Clint Eastwood tries to make with his war films such as "Flags of Our Fathers", "Letters From Home" and this one is that while the men and women who go to war mostly from a sense of duty, honor and country, it is an ugly thing that evokes a terrible toll on upon those who fight them - on all sides.

"Gran Torino" was another awesome movie with a greater message as well.

I haven't seen "American Sniper" yet, but plan to do so once the crowds die down a bit - pun NOT intended.

So true Phil D. It is a movie about the human toll war has on our soldiers not a "war is cool movie" like those who have not seen it yet assume.

I think every American should see this movie, it's a winner.

I saw it on opening night. It actually wasn't jam packed. We got our tickets online and I got a good seat 20 min before it started. Great movie. I liked it a lot.

We went on Saturday and as others stated the 8 o'clock show was sold out. We decided to try again last night and were amazed by the impact that it had on both my husband and myself... as mentioned earlier on this post, at the end of the film, not a noise was made. Everyone just sat for a few minutes and then got up and slowly left the theater.
God Bless our soldiers and their families, without their sacrifices we would not have the freedom that we enjoy today.

agree with gary sinise, what the hell is howard dean talking about?

the ex-DNC chair is out of line once again spewing his angry looney leftist hateful diatribes for anything and anyone conservative.

Howard Dean is one more entrenched idealog, who has made it his mission to assassinate the character and image of anyone who does not follow the dictums of the 'progressive' crowd. Howard Dean has shown himself once again to be an angry lib; a 'hater' and has revealed himself as another democrat who is totally intolerant of anyone who thinks differently than he does. wow !

BrotherDog BrotherDog
Jan '15

Right BrotherDog because only Democrats and "libs" show any level of intolerance. While we're at it, let's blame Obama too!

Eyes right everyone, eyes right!

taxedtodeath taxedtodeath
Jan '15

come on taxed', admit it, one of your own is a hopeless idealog who is on a mission to denigrate everyone who has a different mindset. where's the tolerance?

Howard Dean assuming that the reason this film is a huge success is due to angry tea partiers? are you kidding me?

trying to deal with this honestly, what's your take on Dean's diatribe?

BrotherDog BrotherDog
Jan '15

Do we really need to turn this one political? And that's coming from ME....lol.....

Besides- the popularity of the movie, the box office sales, speaks for itself. Americans of ALL stripes love this movie. Republicans, Democrats, Tea Partiers, Progressive Socialists... everybody.

JeffersonRepub JeffersonRepub
Jan '15

BD, why does Howard Dean's personal opinion have anything to do with taxedtodeath or anyone else for that matter? Howard Dean is obviously a whackjob, but that has no bearing on any other person, only him.

One of YOUR own, Pat Robertson, recently remarked that homosexuals are doomed to die out because they can't reproduce... apparently completely oblivious to the fact that homosexuals are primarily born from heterosexual parents. Should I assume that all conservatives are complete morons simply because they are conservative and some other high-profile influential conservative has proven himself to be one?

ianimal ianimal
Jan '15

you have a point which i support, but you are off the mark as i addressed taxedtodeath for a valid reason;

i agree with your statement of course, but my reasons for posting that way are for a purpose and i don't feel the need right now to clue you in on it. it's interesting that you go to bat for an individual who does the exact thing you called me out for . . . .

and thanks for agreeing with me that Howard Dean the ex-DNC chair is a 'whack job', appreciate the props, (btw, PR is not one of my own, you happen to be wrong on that score, but I happen to be on target, you'll need to trust me on this (you probably won't, but that's ok w/me))

"homosexuals are primarily born from heterosxual parents"

primarily? lmao I would say ONLY lol, no secondary case there.

oh wait, homosexuals can commit heterosexual acts. my bad.

Who cares what Howard Dean thinks? Or Michael Moore or Seth Rogan for that matter. Their 15 minutes are over. Seems to me the more they run their mouths the more people are running to see it!

Ollie Ollie
Jan '15

Yeah, the "bad press" isn't hurting the movie at all.... quite the opposite.... even if people go to see it expecting to agree with Michael Moore or the other nitwits, they seem to be leaving DISagreeing with them...

As I said, the movie speaks for itself.

Going to see this movie tonight.

Saw this statement- "I think every American should see this movie"

I'll get back to you guys and let you know if I agree or disagree with that.

For reference, I was a medic in the U.S. Army.

The only notable war 'movies' that I remember making enough of an impression that I feel EVERYBODY should see them-

Saving Private Ryan

Band Of Brothers.

To be fair, I haven't seen every war movie made.. but both of those show the sacrifice and hardship.

And honestly, nothing can truly pass on the experience of the military unless one has experienced it.

When people ask me about the Army, I tell them- I had never, and will never again be- as hot, as cold, as wet, as tired, physically pained, as humiliated, as humbled, as lonely, as sad, but as strong, as proud and fulfilled as I was while I was in the Army.

People watch something like Band of Brothers or Private Ryan, but don't realize for the people there- they went extremely long times without sleep, without food, without a shower. No houses with heat, no beds, no chairs, no real food. Wearing the same dirty clothes for days at a time. I was lucky enough to have baby wipes as a 'shower' in my time. Back then? Nah..

The movie Forest Gump actually shows a bit of that- they walk in the rain, they sit in the rain, they sleep in the rain.

When you are in the military, there are no concerns given to comfort. You are a machine. You MUST be a machine. Keep moving, do your job. When we were on a forced march and the time came for the troops to take a short break to drink / pee.. myself and the other medics didn't get to stop, we had to run around and check on everyone and treat who needed it. Even though my feet would be raw from all the blisters torn open and toenails lost.

Just realized I am on a rant.. but I won't delete it. Off to the movie I go...

That's OK Josh, you have every right to rant a bit - you lived what many of the movies try to portray. That's part of the point of some of Eastwood's movies, as I mentioned above. The same goes for "Saving Private Ryan". They show the sacrifices you and others have gone through and how it's actually a gritty, ugly and dirty thing. The members of our Armed Forces suffer, as do their families.

Thanks for your service!

Thank you for your service Josh. I had the pleasure to serve in the Army ROTC many years ago but did not serve in Active Duty. I have yet to see it, but will definitely in the comfort of my home in the near future.

he's a true american hero, period, gimme a break already with the pc equivalences, msnbc needs a full frontal lobotomy the way they go after accomplished and decorated soldiers like Kyle, the left really has their panties in a wad over the success of this movie.

I'm hoping the movie is better than the book. I just finished reading it. Although interesting, I didn't think it was very well written at all. That said, it certainly has the subject matter to be made into a good movie.

Hubby said there was a program on TV last night with the man that did the last interview with the actual American Sniper. They also showed more about becoming a sniper and what extensive training (more so than depicted in the movie) they had to go through to become one. I would go to see that movie again...it was that good!

I've had a few weeks to think about this movie.

I'm not sure how to take the general public's reaction to it.

On one hand, it is good to see people appreciate anything the military does, as we typically get overlooked at best, and looked down upon more often than not.

But, honestly the movie (to me) wasn't anything special or ground breaking. There are countless guys over in places like this, doing the same patrols and same firefights every day.

I *highly* recommend anyone who liked this movie- get your hands on the box set of 'Band Of Brothers' and watch it through.. I really think it is excellent beyond words. ..and yes, I am aware that it is hard to fit much into a 3 hour movie as opposed to a mini series.. but watch it.. you will see what I mean..

Josh, I agree on the Band of Brothers
