Atlantic City is Over!

I remember AC in the 1970's before the gambling it was a Sh*thole with homeless, prostitutes, and drug addicts.

Now 40 years later it still looks like a dump outside the casinos.

No one is interested in going there anymore when there are so many other venues with gambling today with thing to do outside the doors of the hotel.

This place is doomed to failure. I have no clue what genius thought the Revel was their savior.

The place is OVER!!! Cut your loses as the Showboat is doing this week.

Going this weekend. Can't wait. I love it. Boardwalk is great and the casinos we go to are a lot of fun. Try it again Mr Negative.

The fix for AC is simple and the place would be bigger then Las Vegas with 2 simple fixes. Legalize weed and prostitution.

AC had 40 yrs to get it right and each time they didn't. While Vegas was busy making their city a vacation/destination tourist attraction with their resorts, AC was only concerned with the weekened NYer's/Philly gamblers. They marketed to the elderly with their penny slots. Never once did they do anything to attract the high rollers or familes. The only reason to go to AC was to gamble

So when Yonkers, Allentown and the Poconos started opening up casinos it was the death nail for AC. no need to drive 2hrs anyone for cheap gambling.

AC blew it cause it could have been so much nicer than Vegas with the beaches/boardwalk

I kinda agree with Darwin but recognize the difficulties.

First you have to compete with Vegas and location, location, location, does not buy you much when getting to Vegas is so cheap and the result ----- an entire city dedicated to why you came catering every possible need ---- is a tough sell.

Then, casino culture says keep the fool playing 24x7. So the idea of maximizing the natural asset of the beach is outside the casino marketers thought process. For years, Vegas has tried to expand share by faking family friendliness. Don't think they ever made a go of that. AC might be able to create that model but instead it's casino, casino, casino. Thus the business could care less about the beach and the city.

Instead of trying to differentiate itself they attempt to copy Vegas are thus are doomed to failure or, at best, being a number two on the beach and that's just gross.

MG if you have been to Vegas lately you would see the resorts' pool scenes are amazing. The resorts cater to the vacationers and do everything they can to keep them on site. They don't try to keep them at the casino tables 24/7 but they do try to keep them on their premises 24/7. Vegas is a destination city where AC is a local weekend gambling city. The casinos are empty most weekdays.

I went there once, thought it was a dump and never went back.

It has potential to be nice, but would take an awful lot of planning and money to be so.

I think this message has been written on the wall for a long time. The thing is it's not going to just happen overnight. You can still go there and hit a nice bar or restaurant and stay in a nice hotel room. It can still be fun. It will hang on but what will be left 10 or 20 years from now? Hard to say right now.

My Story of being a winner there. My best friends wife broke her knee cap. They went every month by bus. They met his two sisters there from Connecticut for lunch. She pleaded to me to go with her husband. I went three times. I only played with the buss money.I won $75 in that time. I kept saying I tried to give it back to Donald and he wouldn't take it.

According to this article,

http://in.reuters.com/article/2014/08/22/usa-newjersey-atlanticcity-idINL2N0QR1KF20140822

Atlantic City's property tax will drop from over 20 billion in 2010 to about 10 billion in 2015. The city has under 40,000 residents.

Newark on the other hand has about 275,000 residents and a budget of about 600 million.

You would think they could pave the streets in AC with gold with that kind of money. Yet they are in a panic that they will only have 10 billion to spend next year.

Darwin, yeah it's been awhile since I Vegassed myself. But last time only saw hangover victims and hookers at the pool, not too many families. Then again, I may have had victim's eyes..... :>)

Also, it has always been very, very, hot when I went, luck of the "business" trip.

I do love Vegas, no place like it, and the less families the better in my book but always wish Vegas well, it is unique.

Mr G. - Much to my dismay, Vegas has become a Disney World of sorts for some families. Strollers all over the place. Sigh.....

As for the hangover victims and hookers, they're still there.
