Brrrr... it's cold outside
The outdoor thermometer registers 44. Weather Channel says 50 but I am not sure about that. Closed windows and put on the heat for an hour...
It is cold!!! I actually slept with winter pijamas and a used a comforter. Not too warm for August. This weather is crazy!!!
It's finally GOOD to get up in the morning.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the tree tops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow...
OK, I digress.
it's gonna be a very cold sustained winter this year, sun spot activity is low, less heat from the sun means a colder planet.
al gore is gonna have a snit fit over it, he dont know what to say out loud anymore, (good)
GC: Please!! And note I said... "Please" be Quiet!!! I know you love this weather, however so enjoy!
So chilly but I love the low humidity.
Early predictions for this winter season are not good ! All of the HL snow bunnies may be happy though. "It’s too early to make maps for this upcoming winter, but we have an abundance of hints we can use for some early forecasting. Predictions for temperature and precipitation will be given. Anomalies in confidence will be listed; if no confidence level is listed, confidence is average.
For the Northeast: A cooler than normal winter with above average precipitation is currently favored. Snowfall is projected to be above normal."

I also love the low humidity, but would like for the temps to at least be in the 80's :) and please do not even mention Winter yet!!!! If we have anything even close to last year in snowfall I am definitely moving!
I told people during the brutal winter, I hope we keep getting those polar vortexes during the summer, when we can use them.
Other parts of the world have had some incredible heat ... for example, Australia when it was their summer.
Things like the California drought concern me ... I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about the future due to a cooler than we're used to summer.
It's gotten down to 44 degrees the last two nights at the Pequest Fish Hatchery. Won't happen tonight due to the spotty cloud cover.
We haven't hit 90 degrees since back on July 23! Have to go all the way back to July 2 for the last 90 + degree day in Hackettstown!!
I've been harping on this since the spring. The pattern really hasn't changed since about mid summer of last year. I thought this summer might be a bit cool. So far we are just a bit below average i believe. Kind of feel like this winter could be somewhat similar to last winter at this point.
Winter is a very bad word and I will not hear of it. I am thankful to be going to Florida next week where I can enjoy some hot, sunny weather. I don't feel as though we truly had a summer around here.
Bryan - we are going to the beach next - any thoughts about the weather? Hope it warms up! thanks!!
Amen Jazzkat! We just got back last week and miss it already. Ocean temp on the gulf side- 84 and pool temp 92. I know it will shoot back up to the 90's just as the kids head back to school:(
True it could be even colder this winter yet drier. Especially with a possible el nino year because that could bring a more southern storm track (like 09-10). Just would depend on where the cutoff is. In 09-10 it started shifting north in Feb and we wound up getting buried.
jrn - it seems like every 'next week' forecast this summer was for a big warmup that never happened. I see more of the same for next week.
Was in NC last week. 65-70 and rain for 4 days, but humid. Yuck!
Glad Florida is warmer for you.
Don't get me wrong me i think it's been a good summer. Though i wouldn't call it an ideal pool/beach summer that's for sure.
Blackcat
Thanks for the Florida weather report. We will be visiting the beach on the Gulf side and I can't wait to swim in that ocean. Where did you visit in Florida?
We started over in the Jensen Beach area to visit my mom for a few days then drove to Naples to visit my sister:) DH rented a boat for the day to go to Keewaydin Island- which is only accessable by boat. And where I got caught in a current and almost drifted off to Mexico in my cheap inner tube;) thank goodness there was a nice Domican family from NJ to come and fetch me:)
Have fun!
We also went to Cassaden Beach( I think that was the name of it) in Venice to look for shark teeth. Did find some and some fossilized stuff:)
Blackcat, do you go to Bathtub Beach? My parents have a house in Florida in PSL. We go to BB whenever we visit.
I've never been to that beach but there's always a next time! Looks really nice! My mom lives in PSL:) We stayed at a place on the beach with a pool - for my son- and my mom stayed with us while we were there.
At least we have the 80's for a few days here:)
The American model shows a very slow moving hurricane hitting FL next week. That being said, this isn't a hurricane model by any means. Definitely something to keep a close eye on though.
AGGGHHHH!!!! Bryan say it isn't so. We are boating on the Gulf on Monday.
Just my luck. I leave my beautiful Florida home after being hit by four huricanes, move back to Jersey and then get hit by Irene and Sandy and now go back to Florida for vacation to face another one. I can't win.
Now the model puts the hurricane just east of the Bahamas. Needless to say this will change again but it is only 5-6 days away so we are starting to get within range.
Eeeeek! Winter predictions.

OOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, baby.
Gone away, is the bluebird,
Here to stay is a new bird.....
[Yikes, better run, duck, and cover I think I see the pitch forks and torches from the snow haters club....]
CAN"T WAIT FOR SNOW!
Ordered all the parts needed to rebuild the chain case on my snowmobile.....again....should be back together sometime this week!!

I am always cold and hubby is always hot...Today we have our usual game going in our house...He opens the windows...I close them...I say it is cold today....he says its a beautiful sunny day... Just like two kids!!!
Joyful, you just described Andy and Mrs. Andy ... how about that?
Now that I just made reference to myself in the third person, y'all know I'm a gooney bird (-;
You probably suspected that all along, anyway.
Here's a first snow in Calgary (this was yesterday). Pretty unusual even for them, they are not in the mountains.

Anything above 60, I enjoy a lot. 50 is a little cool, but wear a jacket and I love that kind of weather!!
The cold front that brought snow to Alberta Canada also brought it to parts of the Rockies and northern plains...
http://www.weather.com/news/weather-forecast/fall-first-cold-frost-20140904
Calgary is pretty far north and at 3,500 elevation so these things can happen. Relatives in Laramie got down into the 20s and got snow. They used to tell us if you want to visit in the fall come in September because it usually snows in October; September is not safe this year...
Anything can happen, 'tis the season for all the winter predictors to give it their best.
The Eastern PA Weather Authority has been very reliable ... this is a good read:

Bryan - You might have to start the "first snowfall" contest earlier this year. :-(
Well we are entering into an El Nino supposedly. Usually that means warmer across the northern part of the county and cooler and wetter across the southern. La Nina tends to be colder across the the north and warmer and drier across the south. Of course there are other factors especially in the east. And remember warmer can easily mean more snow, especially the farther north you go.
Here is a photo of the snow that fell yesterday at the Rapid City, South Dakota NWS Office. It was the earliest measurable snow on record in Rapid City dating back through 1888.
Good Morning Sheridan Wyoming! Photo was taken at 8AM local time this morning.
It's coming folks!! :-)
The thing about Rapid City is that it will probably hit 85 or 90 before Winter sets in...
I am not turning my heat on. NO NO NO. I will be starting to bring in the house plants.
I woke up during the night and needed a blanket. Leaves are falling this morning. But today will be 71 and sunny. Love that!
It was so cold yesterday night that I had to put winter pijamas. And fet the comforter out. I heard not enough sun flares so might get a harsh winter. Hopefully NO! I hate cod weather :(
Was quite cool Monday morning with a low of 37 at Pequest. It's the first reading down into the 30's since the morning of May 20th when it made it down to 35 degrees.
I was colder this morning in Northern Sussex. Yesterday when I woke up I had 40.....today was 33.
Down the road from me, Pequest made it down to freezing this morning. Last time that happened was May 19th. Some clouds rolled in around midnight last night for a couple of hours which made temps come up a bit. Had that not happened we probably would have been a couple of degrees colder this AM.
Folks in Hackettstown made it down to 37 this morning.
Wow, cold down there in Pequest. It was a balmy 41 up on top of our hill in Oxford this morning when I left a little after 6 am.
Yeah Calico pretty amazing temp difference. Same thing occurred in Sussex County this morning with High Point Monument making it down to 41 while in the lower elevations Walpack was 31.
Weird temp profiles tonight under late October clear skies. Colder in south jersey than here in the north.
After a warm week it will get chilly by Friday and quite cold by the weekend with possibly a few snowflakes in the air. Overall though we are in a warmer pattern and that looks to continue. So any cold spells will be brief for now.
As long as it stays sunny.
I have passive solar and, for the most part, this has been great. Heat does not come on until 4am many nights as of late. And turns off by 9 am.
I saw Saturday well be getting flurries. I think we can all agree it'll be a depressing sight.
I doubt everyone agrees with that penning but to each his own.
Something to watch, today's models are deeper and stronger with the cold/snow. Someone in the northeast should get accumulating snow out of this. Who is will be remains to be seen. I'm sure the Facebook crowd will be barking today if they aren't already.
"Depressing" ???!?!
What nonsense!! It'll be that beautiful time of year again. You've never heard of the "Snowlovers Thread" have you Pennings?
In the words of Ren & Stimpy - Happy Happy Joy Joy:

I hate when it snows out early, I love the fall too much, it's the most amazing time of year, the trees are beautiful the weather is perfect.
+1 Pennings. Followed closely by spring. Winter and summer are just 2 annoyances we must tolerate to get to the good stuff!
Haven't turned on the heat yet. It's only been down to 60 in the house so far and I'm waiting to get oil... .
Phil, no heat at 60? That was when I finally turned mine on. I couldn't hold out any longer. I know I will regret it when it's time for an oil delivery :)
I agree with Calico and after last year I would LOVE a mild winter....
Lol Missrx. Doesnt happen often.
nj.com says 2 scenarios possible for this weekend. One not so bad, the other, UT OH!!
NOAA is saying a 40% chance of snow for Saturday. Let's see how it changes as the week progresses.
I hope not... I have to drive all the way up to Crystal Springs for a wedding on Saturday.
I hope not too. I have a Halloween party. Don't you hate when Halloween parties are after the fact? I know I do. Silly IMO.
Today's models shift most of the action farther south. Strange for this time of year. We'll see how it trends. Just a few snow showers for us (almost 4 days out subject to change of course).
