Waterloo Village reopening

A non-profit organization has taken it over. I for one am glad. I hope it can be saved.

This is wonderful...When my older children were in school(20+ yearsago) we lived in Florham Park and Waterloo was a special class trip for all of them....When we moved here my eldest son went to so many things there...Joyful and haphaphappy!

I hope they do concerts but they did not mention it in the article. I also liked the antique events they did.

I would guess that this will put a damper on adult film making at Waterloo Village.

I'm glad to hear it's coming back. Even though Waterloo Village was originally a settlement of British sympathizers. They made ammunition there for the Redcoats.

Re: Waterloo Village reopening

Just a great spot to visit. The history is interesting and the wildlife beautiful.

A good day

Wendy I totally forgot about that incident! Yeah I guess they will have to find another place. Maybe they can go to the nudist camp.

For your reading pleasure.

My dad lived in the village for 10 years when he was a child. Way back when it was a village, not a landmark.

The village was established in 1820?

Think most if not all the buildings are not original to the site - they were moved there from other locations.

Re: Waterloo Village reopening

The only building moved to Waterloo was the Rutan Cabin. With the exception of the modern buildings constructed by the original Waterloo foundation, the other buildings are original to the town. The village prospered due to the canal and railroad. No evidence that ammunition was manufactured here, not even for the redcoats LOL! Items made by the Andover Furnace were shipped from Waterloo, so maybe a cannon ball or two.

Think the whole place is a waste of money for the state & should be sold to private investors...the place sat dormant for at least 10 years not generating any income for the state but taxpayers paid for maintaining the place...i don't get what the state is going for on Waterloo Rd.

They buy houses along the road and don't maintain any of them - the place right before the RR Tracks on the right going into town is a somewhat historic tavern for the Morris Canal. The state buys the place and run's it right into the ground - let's it go to hell with broken windows and than mold and now the place is shot.

Just don't get what the State Government's thinking is - the state is $78.4 Billion Dollars in debt but they can buy private properties with some significant historical value & not maintain them.

I dunno just seems like if a private owner would take more pride in the place than the state has been - but think there is an agenda behind it.

Not a fan of these McMansion Developements but really if the state is $74 Billion in debt & can't maintain all of it's properties - it's time to let some of this state land be sold to private interest's. Towns can zone for whatever and deem historic buildings but the state just seems to do a poor job of property management.
imo

NJ just give me the plan for Waterloo Rd?

Is it buy everything you can & let it go to hell?

Actually....... It first was the town of Andover named for the founder's hometown in England. When they started a forge, they made pig iron, for anyone who would buy it, mostly sold to England ---- but then again, everyone sold to England then. Was called Waterloo two years after Napoleon's famous defeat. Two years into the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress appropriated it and then it made pig iron that was used to make armaments for Washington's Army. Once the railroads took off, the town died.

The latest reopening was spearheaded by Andrea Proctor, Centenary graduate, long time Waterloo lover, Parks department worker, and ex Waterloo guide and program creator. She has a "concession agreement" with the state to run tours, small funding, and a few volunteers. This is way far from a comeback or rejuvenation, but my take is if you have a group, especially kids, this would be a thing to do, and while low key, it sounds very exclusive and personal run by people who really love what they do. Scouts, schools, etc. should take a look at the pricing and take advantage if they can.

At 32 people, it priced out at $9 a head, looked like 200 was the limit and also looked like even if you had 32, they would fill up the rest of the 200 per session if they could so not necessarily private.

RU: I didn't think it was that old either, that was something I overheard that years ago from one of the re-enactors at the Apothecary building.

Went to a recent meeting regarding future events at Waterloo, and concerts will not be be in the cards. The new group is focused on the historical aspect of the canal town and the state does not want the liability issues that come with major concerts.

I do enjoy walking around there now but am excited for it to get back to working order. I always told myself if I won the lottery I would see if I could fix up the houses there and live in one, LOL.

I really want to dig up the old privies!

Smack - you must be a bottle collector then. I understand that was always prime hunting ground for old bottles.

What is the best site to see concerts and festival schedule for Waterloo Village? I always get info too late to go but love this place.

The Methodist Church is going strong and has managed to remain open. Stop in for services, Sunday at 10 a.m., or 9:30 in the summer. And then enjoy a walk in the Village.

Maybe they can make it like Millbrook Village, reinacting some of the old-fashioned ways of doing things, like spinning wool and dipping candles, etc.
That, plus a few arts and crafts activities for kids on the weekends (Maybe once a month) would be terriffic.

They used to do that. My daughter worked there for a while in the farmhouse. The broom maker made the most wonderful brooms that lasted forever.
