Acid reflux

Tried diet, meds, nothing works. All tests show everything is fine. Any different diet suggestions? Constant sore throat if I eat. Thank You. I saw three specialists all just say Nexium 3 times a day or similar product. Does not help much. Thanks.

Chia seeds and DGL Licorice both work. You should check with your doctor before taking DGL because there are issues if you have high blood pressure/heart condition.

When I was pregnant and had heartburn or reflux, I always found that milk helped. Sorry you're going through this and I hope you find some relief soon.

Be careful with overuse of Nexium. It blocks the absorption of calcium. You might be swapping one problem for another. You might also be experiencing Nexium rebound where your body compensates by creating more acid.

My suggestion would be a medication free week with a ver bland simple diet. No chocolate, caffeine, soda, gassy foods, tomatoes, citrus foods, etc. Less tan 4 ounces of liquid with your meals. No food two hours before laying down. Then build from there. I've done it now I am medication free and can eat anything. Good Luck!

Did they check your gallbladder? I only ask because I was having horrible heart burn and it turned out my gallbladder was the culprit. I did a major diet change and now only have to take one omeperazole a day. And the apple cider vinegar is a major help too, esp if you can find the one w. mother in it.

I found that gluten was causing most of my reflux. After eliminating it as much as possible, I rarely have any symptoms of reflux, unless I give into temptation, that is!

Try lying on your left side, which keeps the outlets of the stomach relatively upwards. In many cases, that will give relief when trying to fall asleep or while watching TV, etc. Even sitting while leaning to your left side against pillows or the side of a couch may help a bit.

Everyday....Stress kills my stomach. Lose the stress if possible. Protonix if you can't.
I have had to avoid all ACIDIC foods and beverages if I want to live without it. Can't do it so I suffer. I keep a bottle of Malox in the fridge and make my midnight trek to it to ease the pain most nights.

Went to bed at 11:00, and I was awakened by GERD.
Yep, my good PITA Buddy Acid reflux... gave me a sour hot burning taste and anxiety palpitating pains as if I was having a coronary.
So here I am, waiting for a Zantac to stop the liver from over ejection into my stomach.

I had acid reflux for over 30 years.

First thing, I had to buy an electric adjustable bed (like a hospital bed ) to keep elevated. There is no such thing as laying flat for me.
Last week my GERD was so out of control, I could only sleep sitting up on the couch.

The holidays and foods / fats / sugars / and sheer gluttony on my part I guess did me in. Oh! Excuse me>>>>> ( Burp! ). Ahhhh! Felt good. Relieved some pain.
Gas. The acid also creates gas. Gas in the stomach is created by not enabling your own enzymes to work effectively in the stomach.

So, what do I do for that? ... Easy! Take enzymes. The wife gets them for me 600ct. at GNC ...Papaya Enzymes. I take 4 or 5 with meals. More for BIG Meals.

A German Dr, told me.............:::
Our body after 40 years old, doesn't excrete enough enzymes in some people.
Say hello to Mr. Some. LOL

Probiotics with acidophilus one a day to take care of the waste management lower end of the digestive system. If The lower is messed up, the signal from the brain says, hey acid man...something wrong with stinky man way down under....send some acid and bile to see if that clog of poo bad will wake the heck up and leave in peace.

Yeah, I may be ready for the funny farm, but I sure as heck don't want this GERD to put me on the slab at The hospital with a surgeon trying to repair the holes in my stomach and esophagus. Or the slab at the local funeral parlor.

I take anti gas for the digestive system if the distress is really bad. That does happen when I go overboard and have a big meal with alcoholic beverages. Rarely, but it happens once in a while. Bad Boy Me!!

Why do the Italians and the Greeks (as an example) eat fruit before meals; like grapes and apple wedges or pears??? Because of the Enzymes in the fruit.
They know that aids in digestion.
I can't afford fruit (fresh) in my diet every day, and so that is why I take the enzyme tablets. Easy...just chew them and they taste just like candy. No! Actually like a orange flavor.
They really help in MY digestion. Eat three meals a day. Omit heavy snacks and eating in between. Yeah! Right!.... But I eat too much, and then I suffer. You probably know the drill!!

Don't drink with meals. Wait 1 hour before consuming water or beverages. Give the enzymes a head start, and let them work before flushing and thinning out the stomach content.

Excess stomach gas or pain....as I am doing now between writing. Stand away from the counter a bit, and lean forward with your elbows and arms (forearms) folded and on the counter, then after 2 minutes, stand up straight, then back to the on the counter again, and if there is a gas pocket, it will be expelled out the esophagus and as a burp.
Voids in the stomach with gas will aid the acid in impinging and dissolving the mucous lining.
Take large deep breaths inward to let the air help push the stomach from the lower diaphragm to relieve gas pockets.

Do you have to do this all the time?? No!! Just relief help if you experience a GERD attack.

The most important thing, is while you have this problem, is to prop up the upper torso and keep elevated while asleep.

With extreme onset of acid reflux, you may want to eat fruit, like a few wedges of apple, before and after eating. Look up foods that are high in pectins (enzymes) .
Limit fats. Grease, like in fried foods. Once the GERD is under control, you can go back to fried foods in moderation. Once the esophagus and stomach lining is hopefully restored with mucous membrane, it will be less problematic with digestive acid.

Don't forget. The acid is ejected only because of diet, and incomplete digestion. Its a brain control which is a involuntary reaction.

Good luck. I Know it's no fun.

My problem today, was I ate a 3 egg omelet with Oooey Gooey cheese and fried mushrooms which suck up the oil they were fried in like a sponge.
It was Good Going Down, but Heck coming back up!

Oh! I forgot. I was taking Lipitor ( a cholesterol reducing drug ) and for 2-1/2 years, I suffered with chest pains, and could only sleep in a chair (recliner) upright and waking up every 20 minutes with GERD. The heart was OK and ultrasounds were done on the liver. The liver blood tests were normal, and it was working. The pain was so intense and the GERD was so bad, I was a wreck. I stopped the Lipitor, and in 2 weeks, I could not believe that the chest pains stopped 100%, and I was able to sleep on my back again. The fist time with no pain, I called out from work, and slept till 2 o'clock the next day; just to enjoy not having any more pain.

Lipitor is a good drug, but it was not for me and some people! The Doctors just laughed when I complained, and even asked if it could be the Lipitor. They thought I was crazy..
Hope this can be of some help sister Jane

i saw a thing on dr oz yester day he said if u put a teaspoon or two in a 8 oz glass of water it will get rid of acid reflux imediately . also he said if you take melatonin on a daily basis or chewable licherish tabs that will prevent you from getting acid reflux

That was a great post embryodad. I do not suffer from GERD but do have an over production of acid in my chemistry make-up. I have only had reflux a couple of times ( felt like hot blood or oil slowly rolling up towards by throat. AWFUL!! I do suffer daily with symptoms from almost everything I eat or drink. Coffee right now. Forget cereal with a banana for breakfast..no way - no toast and jelly or even toast with fake butter. Lean protein is probably one of the things I can eat without repercussions. Gall Bladder was removed when I was 28 after being quite sick during pregnancy which honestly gave me some relief for a short time. I have been on several OTC drugs and nothing really worked. Finally about 6 years ago Dr scoped me to check out the esophagus and look for causes - nothing serious - thank God just some inflammation. Protonix worked great in subduing the acid pumps in the stomach. I went off Protonix several years ago to loss of health ins and found that stress was the biggest culprit. If I keep stress down I can control the symptoms better. Stress is the killer in many areas. It's hard to keep that under control but I have made progress. Meanwhile I have my nice cold bottle of chalky Malox in the fridge and I make my midnight trek through the dark to fine some relief when needed. Now back to sister jane.

My 20 year old daughter has similiar problem, after an endoscopy she was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. Her doctor said there is really nothing to do except change her diet, nothing acidic, no coffee, no chocolate, nothing to eat at least four hours before bed. He told her to elevate her head and shoulders when she sleeps, He gave her prescription strength prilosec as well. The presciption along with watching her diet has helped, she'll go a week or more sometimes with no reflux or heartburn at all.

Sodium Bicarbonate ...commonly known as baking soda is a quick relief for neutralizing stomach acid. Good for quick help, but contains a lot of sodium.
Unfortunately, I am on a salt (sodium ) restricted diet; so that leaves me without that relief.

A pinch in a half glass of water is usually how it is taken.
It takes an acid, and neutralizes it because it is alkaline.

My family members all took that baking soda after eating.
The only problem with that, is the digestive acid is needed for complete digestion.

DGL is magical!

1 drop of peppermint oil will help! Put it in your drink of choice. Just make sure you buy the right variety for ingestion.

Ive had it for years and I too have a hiatal hernia. I can go for awhile and be fine and then I get flares. I wast just told about ACV too, Im curious how and if this work. Anyone with good results? Can it be harmful? It just seems so acidic to take.

ACV is good for anyone to take. 1-2 tbsp 3x a day. Pour 8oz glass of water and just drop in. May be gross but it's a super power "food". Get the unfiltered organic version with "the mother".

My 24 year old son has been suffering from GERD for years and the past three weeks it is an everyday occurrence. He's going back to Dr. Chang on Friday. All previous rx have not worked. MRA he had in the winter came back negative. I will suggest the apple cider. He already sleeps on an incline. Unfortunately, he does drink coffee :( . We're looking for a remedy, that's for sure.

Sister Jane, I know you've said you tried diet, but have tried gluten free/dairy free yet? I used to be scared to go to sleep at night, because I would wake up unable to breath, gasping for air, with acid in my chest. I no longer need to take nexium, protonix etc. My diet boils down to fruits/vegetables/lean meats/water. Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures :)
