Pew!!! You Stink

I have a 9 year old son (just turned 9) that seems to have body odor issues already. I tried to research but only received back information on girls. Isnt he too young for anti-perspirant/deodorant??? How do I tell him, that he smells? Do I need to tell him about the birds and the bees at the same time? Its just me, Mom, and I always thought my ex would handle this but he just turned out to be a Loser. OMG he is growing up so fast. I dont think I am ready for this but I dont want other kids to make fun of him. Any suggestions.

sheesh. a little harsh.
just buy him a stick of deodorant, leave it in his bathroom and tell him this is what young men use so they dont stank.

As a former nine year old boy, I can assure you that just because he goes into the bathroom and you hear water running and he comes out of the bathroom with wet hair... that doesn't mean he is washing himself properly.

Boys that age resent being told to shower and think they're getting away with something by fooling you. That is most likely the reason for the stank, because you're right... until he hits puberty, body odor shouldn't be an issue if he bathes regularly.

This is normal part of growing up. Tell him to wash well and get him some deodorant.

He is not to young for deoderant. No you don't have to tell min about the birds and the bees yet but he may already know more than you realise. As a single Mom you will have to take on this subject soon and try to stay age appropriate. He may have started growing hair there and other places too. Your son may be maturing a little faster than other boys his age but that is perfectly normal. Good Luck

And before you know it he will be taking two and sometimes three showers a day and you won't be able to get him out of the bathroom. You'll get throught this.

Deansangie - I have not told him he stinks, I just say "honey you need to take bath or shower". I just put that in the topic line.
And thank you all for your advise, He is my oldest and raising kids is not easy (maybe just for me). I dont have that another parent to say "hey have you noticed this or that" so I always second guess my judgement. Just want to raise "normal" well adjusted kids that wont say to their psych doctor "it's all my mother fault".

justasking: I'm a single parent, too, with just one daughter, though, which has been enough for me. When she was 20, she started to see a therapist for depression. I'll never forget how she said to me after her first session "You're not gonna like this, Mom, but it's all your fault." We can laugh at it now.

I have had to let my son who is now 15 know that a shower is important every day... His hair looks dirty if he doesnt. Its a hard thing to tell them without feeling like youre hurting their feelings... So.. what i did a few years ago is just start getting him axe body spray and the matching scent deodorant... at the time it make him feel like a "big boy". Its better coming from his mom than a mean kid at school.

Stock your shower with antibiotic soaps. Someday he'll be gone and you'll miss that grubby boy smell.

I remember in 3rd grade, we had a talk from the school nurse about body odor and deodorant.

My mom always took the honest but gentle approach. Just tell him honestly that as we get older and run and play harder we can get a little stinky so deodorant becomes a necessity.

Get him axe. I got that for my son when he was 10 and noticing he needed it. He still uses it and loved the smell. Sometims he over uses it LOL! It is in a spray aerosol though. Thats the only downfall.

Christine - I got the Axe both the stick and spray. I could not find just a deodorant everything is both a antiperant/deodorant. I thought he would get me a hard time but he was in the bathroom the minute I gave it to him and told he he knew how to use it. HE USED THE WHOLE CAN OF SPRAY. The bathroom stink soo bad, I had to open the window, put a fan in there, and close the door. So now he stinks in a good way. LOL
Thanks

Dolly - for once we disagree! Avoid antibacterial soaps. Simple friction and water with some basic soap is perfect.

Deoderant without antiperspirant can be found at health food shops or even ShopRite -- Toms of Maine has a "manly" one...

Speed Stick makes a plain deodorant. BF is very against anti-perspirant, it's deodorant only for him.

I am also anti-antiperspirant. I use Tom's of Maine, too. They recently changed the formula, and I find it's fairly effective. Sometimes you have to reapply midday, but it should be fine for a preteen.

What is so bad about Antiperspirants?? I mean the kid lives on Chicken McNuggents so he is full of chemicals already. Which could be the reason why he stunk to begin with but whole different issue
