Home Heating Oil Prices 2013-2014

Starting a new thread for this.

Norton is at $3.249
Day and Nite at $3.259
Greenworks at $3.459

What is Greenworks thinking? LOL

Calico696 Calico696

8/15 Thursday.

Usually competitive:
falconoil.net = 3.26
nortonoil.com = 3.25

Many are NOT usually competitive (not worth listing)

Does anyone know of any other competitive companies? PLEASE post their website(s) OR the company name & phone number if they don't have a website. Thanks.

Thank you for starting a new thread, Calico696!

Greenworks has had consistently higher prices for many weeks or months now.
I heard that they are under new management, but haven't confirmed that. I won't be using them unless their prices become competitive again.

Just this morning I heard on radio news that due to Egyptian unrest, the price of a barrel of oil has gone up today.

Spring Fever Spring Fever
Aug '13

So does anyone here lock into a price in the beginning of the season? Or know of any companies that do that?

If you buy from say Hackettstown oil, and to get the online price I assume you need to prepay for the amount you want to buy by credit card, do you have to guess how many gallons you need and prepay for that? What if you just want it filled and not sure exactly how much you need?

How do you guys keep track of when you need oil? Do you just keep an eye on the gauge? I think they have software that tracks usage by degree days. TIA

Joe M Joe M
Aug '13

I just look at my guage and can tell when it is ready to take at least 150 gallons.
At that point I start checking around on line for the best prices. I try to wait until prices drop a good amount, which could be over weeks or months, and then I go with the "winning" company. My oil tank holds 275 gallons, so I have quite some time to find the best price. I have paid with cash or my credit card upon delivery and have purchased from many different companies this way.

Most companies offer the "lock in " pricing. I have done better with the system above.

Spring Fever Spring Fever
Aug '13

My tank is about empty, so I will need a deliver in the next 2 months. For the amount that prices will go up or down in that timeframe, I decided to stop thinking about it and ordered from Hackettstown Oil on-line. $20 credit to register, so it averaged out to $3.16/gallon.

When somebody farts in the Middle East the prices rise or the threat of maybe possible bad weather in the Gulf of Mexico - or maybe rumors of refineries not allowed to be built even though the ones we have now are reduced in capacity output to keep the supply tight to fool the idiots who believe that BS .Those who control the oil supply tighten the noose every year and don't care what silly reason they use to do it .

Go ahead and build that pipeline from Canada and I guarantee prices will still rise - in fact I wish they would . After all what did the Alaska pipeline do ? It just gave the oil conglomerates more oil the majority of which they sold to Japan where they got much more money for it .

As of 13-Sept-2013:

Region Oil= $3.369
North Jersey Energy Corp= $3.35
M&M= $3.45
Norton= $3.349
Falcon= $3.34
Hackettstown Oil= $3.33 (online)

Went with Hackettstown Oil because 1) their price was the best (actually it ended up $3.31 instead because we got 300 gallons) and 2) their service is awesome. They are still running the $20 off for new online customers too!

Hi all,

Bumping this up, as it was a surprise to me.

Norton Oil has begun to end opperations on 11/8/13
as of 11/11/13 there will be no burner repairs - no contract repairs - no new customers & no oil delivery to anyone other than Automatic customers.

Their offices are closed, but you can leave a msg and they will return your call.

I know that I have them as my oil company in Great Meadows, not sure if they came out to Htown or not -

I figured it would be something that people would want to know about, since it is going to be getting cold.

Trying to get usse to the ups and downs of oil heat and I think I hit my first down, LOL. When I ordered from Hackettstown Oil in November, the price was $3.20 (online), and you had to order 150 gallons minimum to get that price. Checked the price this morning because we're getting low, and it's $3.61 ($.10 less online). Ouch! Since I might have to go the 100 gallon route, I will have to pay the higher price. Is that a common thing for oil customers to do or do you try to tweak it along until you get can get the 150 gallons and pay the lower price. Not sure I'm liking this oil heat thing, but I LOVE those radiators.

I would shop around there's a lot of oil companies that deliver to Hackettstown ....Hackettstown oil isn't the only one.I usually check online or call about 5 companies and order when I get the lowest price.But most companies if not all companies I have dealt with always make you buy 150+ gallons.Make sure you have your burner serviced annually ,on the coldest days of the year I only use roughly 2-3 gallons a day....if I get the wifey to turn down the heat I can lower that,but that's another story !

I ordered oil Nov. 29 and the price was 3.49 per gallon if 150 gallons or more. The
3.439 price sounds good to me, but we still have almost 3/4 of a tank left...

Day and Night has the least expensive price. However, when I look on line at reviews, people have posted complaints against them for double charging, not being cooperative in regard to resolving the double charging, and not coming out to fill oil on a timely basis, breaking delivery date promises.
The next least expensive is Liberty.
Can anyone comment?

Gardenfish- I called Mayberry's for a price one time and they were 20+ cents above EVERYONE else. When I asked why, they said so that if I should ever need service on my furnace, I could use them. Yes, it is crazy that they charge so much and there are so many people who are "tied" in with them...I know of a few seniors who are hesitant to make a switch because they feel they can't get the dependable service elsewhere. On the topic of oil. I got 200 gallons of oil Jan 3rd and I just ran out 2 days ago. I keep my heat set at 65 and have every window covered with plastic. Is it normal to go through this amount so quick. I am on the second floor of a 2 family house.

Mommyshell - I ordered 200 gallons just before the new year. We have a programmable thermostat. It's at 60 while we are at work all day, 63 at night and 67 when we are home. That 200 gallons is basically gone. As I stated above, I ordered 175 gallons today.

Calico696 Calico696
Feb '14

Mommyshell

Do you have a separate oil tank and heater for your floor alone or do you share the tank and heater? If so, the family on the first floor may have their heat higher than you. Plastic over the windows is a good idea, but a lot depends on how well your floor is insulated on the sides. You can buy outlet and switch insulators to help cut air leakage through those areas. They do also make an infrared measuring device that allows you to see if one section of the wall is much cooler than another or if something like an attic stairway is "leaking" cold air into the house. (Technically it's allowing heat transfer, but we won't go techie - LOL).

Another thing to consider (and there are actually a good number of things to pursue and/or think about ) is that if your heater also heats the hot water and is not a separate unit, then it will be burning oil too. By turning down the on/off temperature of the hot water section a bit, it allowed the burner to go on much less in both the summer (when you're not using it to actively heat the house), as well as in the winter. A good thing to do is to buy the brown foam pipe insulation (assuming you have baseboard hot water and not steam heat - I'm not sure if it will take the additional temp. and you do NOT want to touch any pre-existing insulation that looks almost like a cast on the pipe as it likely contains asbestos!

If you have bare copper pipes and it's baseboard hot water, you can use it (the brown foam to insulate the pipes. Another thing is to listen for a gurgling sound as the water circulates (again in BBHW systems). If you hear gurgling as the water circulates, then you likely need to bleed air out of the system. Air in the system doesn't allow the water to effectively transfer heat as well as it should. Also it depends on how long it's been since your burner was serviced, since clogging of the nozzle or buildup of dust in the air intake, etc. could mess up the efficiency of your burner as well.

I've found that I use more oil by setting back the thermostat at night and having it come up when it comes time to get up. That's usually the coldest part of the day and since most houses leak some amount of heat, it seems a bit counterproductive to not let it just maintain a somewhat lower setting 24/7. I think the best time for a few degree setback is for when I'm at work, which is normally makes it come back up around 4:30 PM, when it's not quite at the "bitterly cold" stage outside yet. A small electric/ceramic heater provides me a bit of extra heat in the bathroom or if I've been out shoveling for a good while, etc.

Best of luck at staying warm!

Ordered home heating oil yesterday, 3/4/14, from Liberty Oil. Tanya was kind enough to match smartclickenergy.com's price, even though they're up in Boston. Price given to me was $371.9/gallon. I'm staying with Liberty Oil - I am tired of shopping around and then asking the oil company which advertises in the window at the corner of Grand Avenue in Hackettstown to beat the given price. The latter company guarantees the lowest price, but never advertises it - they are always significantly higher than what you can find. Why don't they just show a better price in the first place? Hopefully they'll change and stop the gimmicks. I'm proof that they've worn me down, so I switched to some one else.
