Can we help this Warren County Group?

While I was reading Lynnada's thread about cleaning and uncluttering, I started thinking about what I could do with my stuff. I usually take what I don't need anymore to Trinity.

Then I remembered that we have the Warren County Battered Women's Service helping local women and their children.

Long story short: They were happy to get a call from me saying I was going to ask all of you to consider donating your unwanted items to them. We can keep this very simple. They have no storage so will ask for items as needed.

There is a woman who will be moving into an apartment in a week or two. She has two boys, four and six, who need school clothes. Also, twin or double sheets, silverware, pots and pans, dishes and apartment start-up stuff. Bunk beds if anyone has them.

I'll be happy to do pickups and deliveries.

There are lots of generous people on this forum and I'm hopeful we can make a difference to these families.

Wow this is such a FANTASTIC idea. Cbel - I like the way you are thinking.

Itsa great organization to donate to. Whenever I have stuff stuff from the store that I know they can use I call them. Just remember they do not have storage so they cannot take items all the time. I will look into what I have I can give them this time cbel. Unfortunately I have no childrens clothes but in the future we will. I will post back tomorrow. I know I have a coffee pot and a mixer that I can give her.

Reporting back: I spoke to someone at the Shelter a few minutes ago and I have a phone appointment on Monday to work out the details. They are very grateful to know of a group that is so willing to help (and they ain't seen nothin' yet).

Great, Christine. Like I said to colette, I'll know more on Monday.

I'm hoping on Monday, maybe they can give you a list. I do have a bin full of stuff, I also have the Lupus Foundation coming on Tuesday to pick up donations. If I have stuff in my give away bag this lady needs, I'll pull it out and put it aside.

Mar '12

Thanks, Bessie. The shelter coordinator and I are finally going to talk tomorrow to make a plan and I will report back.

I'm very enthusiastic that this effort is going to be helpful to abused Warren County women who thought there was no place to turn. I'm trying to keep it simple and take one step at a time.

A side comment: Kudos to all the HL women who have been so incredibly supportive.

I am really happy to help in the limited way that I can this "nameless, faceless, brave woman". She is every woman and I am very proud of her and all of us.

Firefly Firefly
Mar '12

Wouldn't it be nice if each of us women could also include just a card of encouragement to the woman starting out again? Like, "good for you! Take care of yourself, you're worth it."

That's what I'd really like to say to someone who has suffered abuse and is recovering.

Rebecka Rebecka

I'm proud, too, Firefly. It's good to stick together. I've had my many lean years and I live on a very strict budget, as do many of you, but I've always said "If I have two, I'll give you one".

I think that may make me a bleeding-heart liberal, but, oh well.

That's a really nice thought, Rebecka.

Hello ladies,

I am Carol. I work at the Domestic Abuse & Sexual Assault Crisis Center in Warren County. I have been reading everyone's comments.
I wanted you all to know how special you are to care about the clients in our agency.
Women and children who stay in our safe house eventually move into their own apartments. They leave with twin beds for each of them which are provided by the County. Other than that, they have nothing!
Most needed items would be sheets, blankets, towels, pots & pans, silverware, can openers, baking pans, coffee pots/tea pots, coffee tables, end tables, lamps, (a hot item-vacuum cleaners) bathroom sets,( shower curtains & rugs),curtain/curtain rods, dressers, table/chairs, televisions/dvd players, toasters, mixers, small appliances, pictures, garbage cans, toiletries, and anything you can think of if you were starting your life all over again. Please-all items must be new or slightly used.
Thank you ALL for caring!!!!!!!!!!!! God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just met someone (for the first time) at Panera to pick up some gift cards that she was donatiing.

There are angels among us.

"I have lots of help from HL women. It's really heartwarming." - cbel

That comment has me wondering, besides GC, Bubba and The Duke, how come there hasn't been any male posters jumping in to help? But yet when it comes to shopping local or saving a pet or loose farm animal, they're there. Is it because they see it as a "woman's" issue? I see it as a "human" issue.

Because SueR...

Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.

It took me awhile to appreciate the differences ( not talking anatomy now) but once you do understand - it makes life so much easier.

I will have a brand new set of colorful dishes from France. A friend bought them and never used them, and is moving. I am also going to go through things and see what else the ladies might be able to use. I told him about the cause and he told me to help myself to whatever they could use. :-)

Rebecka Rebecka

I think Rebecka, just said "Him" ...Sue R.. But you are right...Maybe the men feel this project is more a woman thing but there are men out there that have been victims of domestic abuse as well.

Let me know when the next "meet up" is - I have a few things to contribute. It sure would be nice if the shelter had a place to store these things - then the women could choose what they needed or wanted rather then end up with 3 toasters and no coffee maker. I'm offended but the suggestion made on here that men don't care about this issue...

Perhaps there are males (such as myself) who find it repulsive when another male beats on their partner.

With that said, I'm happy to help but don't have much to donate. I can check with my mom and sisters if they might have some things. However, I have a feeling I might be of more help through manual or technological labor. My schedule is sort of hectic at the moment since I am taking 2 classes 2 nights a week but after Memorial Day I should be more available to help.

Shame on those who tried to politicize this thread ...

Computer Sharp Computer Sharp
Mar '12

C# ~ it's good to see you here and thank you for offering your services. If you know of any other men that feel the same as you, that would be able to offer their assistance, please let us know.

Thank you, once again - it's really appreciated : )

happy2bhere happy2bhere
Mar '12

Oh, yes...shame on me for wondering and stating the obvious!! That NO men posters have posted on this thread offering to help.

I'm not policizing anything or trying start trouble. I was just curious. And I sure as hell didn't say men didn't care about the issue of domestic abuse. Any other thread where someone needed help, both men and woman were involved, or even commented. I just found it unusual, that's all.

What it comes down to is looking around to see if you have something you can donate to a "person in need", no matter why they need it.

I understand not everyone will/can/wants to help out on every situation that a HLer puts out there. I myself haven't and I don't expect everyone to either.

CS: A thank you from me as well...for your offer and your concern. Any support, even if it can only be moral support, is appreciated.

SueR - some thoughts are better kept to yourself and I think this is an example of one. Look back at what you wrote and think about why it can *easily* be looked at trying to bring up feminism in a thread that is geared towards helping those in need. To me, that's politicizing and again, maybe those things that appear obvious don't need to be stated so. I'm not looking to debate with you on this topic so I'll leave it at that.

cbel - I commend you for reaching out to the Crisis Center and bringing awareness to their needs.

cbel & carol p - I'm a young guy with experience moving furniture so if you think I can be of help with this kind of thing, let me know. Does the crisis center have a facebook page or a website? Have they thought about getting one? I know there's a degree of anonymity involved in certain situations, so maybe that wouldn't be the direction they're looking to go in.

Again I'm happy to help any time that I can, and my availability should open up in May.

Computer Sharp Computer Sharp
Mar '12

I am not looking to debate this either. So I agree, let's leave it at that and keep this thread positive and what it is meant to be.

Thanks, Bessie. Like I said before, we're just trying to get a process in order so this support can be ongoing.

Hello Ladies, its Carol P from the shelter. I know one of you have bunk beds to donate. Has anyone been in contact with someone who would be able to deliver them to Washington if they are left in Hackettstown?
The same client is also in need of summer clothes for her boys. Their sizes are 5/6 & 7/8. If anyone has clothes for these boys, they can contact me directly on the hotline-(908)453-4181. I am here Monday -Friday from 7:30-4:00.
I look foward to hearing from you.
Keep up the life changing work!!!!

Be sure to tell us what else you will need, Cbel. ...so we can plan for your next visit.

@CBEL, I have a few things, toiletries, & wash clothes. Will send them with GC if you're going to dinner tonight. I can't go, previous plans but would like to get them to you to add to the pile. Will probably have more after the garage sale.

That's great, Bessie. Thanks!

Bessie: That was some bagful of goodies. On behalf of Carol P, thank you!

Hi Ladies,

I have decided to post some quotes to clients who have received your donations:

" I knew starting over again would be difficult. Finally having dinner plates and a table to sit at with my children somehow gives us the ability to feel everything is going to be ok again."

" I never knew not having a can opener and glasses could feel so humiliating ."
Please thank the people who cared enough to think of the little things in life."

"I never knew that one day I would have to leave all the material things I worked so hard for in life behind. Having been given the bare necessities makes me feel like maybe I can start all over again!" "Thank you to the people who cared enough to donate items that may seem simple to others, but means the world to me and my children."
Ladies, please read all quotes and take a moment to realize that you are giving these people a chance at starting life over again. Not having dishes to eat off of and pots to cook a meal sometimes tempts these victims to give up!!
PLEASE keep up the good work, I can not do it with out you!! Carol P

Thanks for posting, Carol. It felt good to read that.

I have another container almost full that I can deliver at the end of the week (Thanks, Bessie!) and hopefully more after the town-wide garage sale is over.

To everyone having a sale: I'll be glad to pick up any leftover items that you think the Shelter might use. Just post here or PM me. TIA .... and Good Luck with your sales!

I am having a sale this weekend too, Cbel, and will be happy to donate any household items left over that the ladies might want or need. I will let you know.

Hello Ladies, its Carol P.
I am hoping one of you can help me.

We have a black cat with green eyes who comes to the shelter every day. She stands up on 2 legs and looks into my office window and cries every day!! She is full of personality and runs to you like a dog when you call her. She is obviously homeless and is extremely friendly and beautiful!!!!
Is there anyone who knows someone who could adopt her? She has been coming to us for weeks now and I am having a hard time finding her a home!
I am not suppose to feed her but refuse to turn the other way, so I am currently sneaking her food twice a day.
If you know of anyone, please let me know. I am unable to take her picture and post it from my phone at this time but will keep trying. Hopefully one of you can help her. Carol P

May '12

Hi, Bonv! Three HLers contacted me last week are donating yard-sale leftovers. My car is loaded with yesterday's pickup, and I have one more on Friday and one on Sunday.

The problem is that the Shelter doesn't have much storage space and can't store everything I collect. But since I don't want to turn down any donations, I'm taking everything and looking for storage space. So far an HLer has set aside a portion of her garage for me. I'll keep an inventory, tell Carol P what we have, and then deliver as needed.

So getting back to your question, please let me know what you have. I'll see what the Shelter needs right now, and will store the rest of your things.

Thanks!

cbel - I have a shopping bag with glassware and a small lamp that I packed in bubble wrap and newspaper and will bring with me on Sunday at the "Knights" breakfast.

I also brought the donated sewing machine to my client today and boy, she cried up a storm!!! All happy tears and is so excited that she can resume alterations that have been put on hold without her sewing machine.
Thank you all for all your efforts!!!

Hello Ladies,

I have a mom with a toddler moving out at the end of the month. She actually has family members that are willing to assist in helping move heavy furniture!!!
She is in need of a toddler bed which I had turned down in the past because I didn't have anyone to move it.
She will also need the following items: dressers, tv's, dvd player for her son, couch, bed, and any other furniture anyone is willing to donate. This is the first client moving out of the safe house that actually has family support and the means to move heavy furniture, so the sky's the limit on this one! Thank you all and good luck.

The violin is something that a victim once played when her life was normal and free of domestic violence. I would love to be able to give her that sense of peace back in her life.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for all the donations Cbel brought me.! I had 2 ladies that were extremely grateful to get them and would have exited the shelter with nothing if it wasn't for everyone.

Just thought of a great idea when cleaning out the attic. I have a small artificial Christmas tree...new boxes of lights, tinsel, bulbs, etc. and lots of new in box Christmas things. My mom has a good 12 boxes of Christmas things. I'm sure she can "donate/do without/won't miss/won't know/what she doesn't know won't hurt her/you choose" at least a box or five.

Thanks, GC. I'm sure we're going to make some families very happy.

Joyful and Bessie: I just took a carload of your things to Carol. She has two women moving out this week. One was hoping for a Christmas tree and one was hoping for red kitchen utensils.

Don't you just love it?

I have a lighted Christmas tree that I would be willing to donate to the woman looking for a tree. Can you tell me where to donate it? It is a 6' lighted slim tree in good condition.

We just upgraded to a fuller 7 1/2 ' tree to better fit the space in the new house.

Bessie Bessie

That's why I posted it, Bessie. Carol said the woman will be thrilled!

She told Carol recently that she would like some red kitchen things and Carol said that they take what they can get. And then I come along with your red-handled silverware. You can't beat it!

Someone else asked for a Christmas tree and I came with Joyful's tree and decorations.

And, Coralie, I asked and they would love your tree as well.

Yes, I was able to provide a small tree ( but with all the decorations and trimmings) but Coralie's sounds wonderful for the second woman or if this same woman wants a bigger tree. In fact, the next time I speak to Carol, I'll ask for a Christmas wish list ... if they do that.

Cbel:

Does anyone need Christmas lights and ornaments for the tree? Mine have gotten out of control (I buy more every year, I am an addict!) and I was just saying I should give some away. I can't think of anyone more deserving of some Christmas cheer than a family escaping domestic violence, so I would be happy to donate some of my beloved Christmas decorations to help. I have brand new boxes of lights, boxes of pretty bulbs, Fake snow, garland, etc. Also, I usually give a few toys to toys for tots every year, but I would be more than happy to divert those to the shelter this year. PM me if you're interested and we will schedule a hand off.

I see from a month ago that they were in need of household items. Since it is closer to Christmas I was wondering if the type of items I have below may be in need.

I was wondering if this would be a good place to donate used toys? I have some used mostly boy toys. Geotracks, Plastic Thomas, as well as miscellaneous items. I just do not have the time to get them ready for consignment and would would rather donate them to people who need them. Most of the items are not in original boxes but are in good condition.
