New here anyone from Morristown? Used to live there back in the day
Hi all,
Ended up on this forum by accident while searching for events. Anyone from Morristown? I lived in Hackettstown after graduating, and also had some friends there but it has been years. I live in Virginia now and really miss my old stomping grounds....

I have a lot of involvement with M'town. WHat would you like to know?? | just me July 19, 2008 9:52 pm | Link |
Karen in LV is from Morristown! Maybe she'll be on soon! :) | LadyBug July 19, 2008 10:31 pm | Link |
Dear Debbie,
I used to live in Mendham Township until I got married. Then I moved to Mansfield Township. I used to ride my bicycle to Morristown, shop at Epsteins and Bamburgers and various other places. I used to watch movies at the Community Theatre when they showed only one movie at a time. I went to a Meatloaf concert at the Community Theatre in 1982. Now they still have concerts and shows there. Did you ever eat at the New York Tea Garden? That was my favorite place for Chinese food!! Hope you enjoy my walk down memeory lane. Take care!! | Mansfield Mama July 19, 2008 11:03 pm | Link |
omgosh.... I remember The New York Tea Garden!! They played Kitaro in the background!!! It was so beaitiful inside.... like being in the Orient!!
And Bamberger's... wow.... wonder how many folks know that was Macy's former name...
I bought my Minolta XD-11 from there in 1978 and still have it and still use it exclusively.
Epstein's is/was my ex-husband's cousins! :D | just me July 20, 2008 4:58 am | Link |
I'm from Morristown originally....born and raised on South Street across from Seaton Hackney Stables! | BabyFireFly July 20, 2008 6:20 pm | Link |
Dear everyone,
I do remember the stables. I moved to Brookside in 1967 and still enjoy getting into Morristown. The square always looked so nice at Christmastime. I used to ride my bike to the Morris County Mall and also the Morris County Public Library. Do you remember "The Thirsty Ear"?(A bar on Washington St.). I could not go into it because I was underage but I bet there was alot of interesting things that happened there in the late 60's. | Mansfield Mama July 20, 2008 6:42 pm | Link |
Here I am! I grew up in Morristown, graduated from MHS. Moved away after getting married and then moved back there in '83. Raised my oldest 3 kids there, and just moved here to LV 4 years ago!
I remember the Thirsty Ear! I couldn't go in there either. Bamberger's, Epsteins - anyone remember the Florinne Shop? I worked there thru high school. How about Kresge's, Woolworth's? Miles Shoes, National Shoes? Jodo's Gift Shop? The Exclusive Shop? There were great little stores around the Green where they knew you when you walked in.
I wonder how many of us really know each other from the old days??? Debbie - did you go to MHS? | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 10:50 am | Link |
Ace Drug store (next to Woolworths), Oppenheim Collins, Salny Bros mens store? Speedwell Ave before the redevelopment-Winstons Toy store and Shalit Drugs? Food Fair down by James St. And that awful dingy Sears store? Remember when Calaloo Cafe was a pancake house? Remember when it wasn't even there?!?
Karen, which elementary school did you attend? I didn't go to MHS, but my parents did waayyyyy back in the 30's. | Slade July 21, 2008 11:06 am | Link |
Slade - my dad graduated from MHS in '37. I went to Alexander Hamilton over on Mills St. I remember well all those stores you mentioned! Those were the good ol' days in M'town. Remember the French Millenary? That's where all the ladies bought their hats for church! How about the Star Shop? | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 11:13 am | Link |
One of my first jobs was a driver at Glendale Florist on South St. Learned to play guitar hangin' on the Green. Hitched from Brookside to Motown everyday!
Glendale - remember it well! The Green was the best place to hang, wasn't it? :) (Of course, my parents didn't like that too much...lol) | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 11:17 am | Link |
Anyone remember the Park Theater? It was where Headquarter's Plaza is now. | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 12:58 pm | Link |
Saw "Born Free" and "X-15" there! Not on the same day of course!
Remember another Chinese Restaurant August Moon. Ah the Park Theater. Shalit's Drugstore, Santa landing on top of Bamburgers. All Souls Hospital, Fireworks at the High School | Clyde Potts July 21, 2008 1:08 pm | Link |
Hey Clyde - You have a resevoir in Brookside named after you! My grandfather helped build it in the '30's or '40's!
Clyde Potts - I was born at All Souls', then did years of volunteer work there. Those nuns were tough bosses! lol. I grew up near the h.s. - the fireworks were in my backyard - we had ringside seats! And, of course - Shalitt's! Remember the excitement with Santa coming down that ladder? "Don't fall, Santa!" haha. | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 1:18 pm | Link |
John C - funny you should say that. Everytime I see that name, I think of the reservoir. My dad used to pile us in the car to take my grandmother for Sunday drives to Brookside, and he always had to go by that reservoir! My dad always would remark at how high, or how low, the water level was. Such excitement on a Sunday afternoon! | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 1:24 pm | Link |
Debbie - see what you started? A great trip down memory lane for those of us with M'town connections! Thanks! :) | Karen in LV July 21, 2008 1:33 pm | Link |
I grew up in Hackettstown, but Morristown was the place to shop. We bought any special outfit from Epstein's, including First Communion dresses, and they also had a full Girl Scout supply department. The Jodo Gift shop was the only place to get a gift.....and then on to Woolworths for an ice cream treat. Years later, I worked at Epstein's after college, then the Office part time, hung at Society Hill and lived near Washington's HQ. It is sad for me to see Epstein's razed.... I hope all the "improvements" being made in Morristown return it to a wonderful place to be. | LVmomofboys July 22, 2008 9:52 pm | Link |
LV - I agree - it was sad to see Epstein's gone. That was such a landmark in M'town for many many years. Unfortunately, a lot of retail is gone now. A lot of restaurants and banks, though. I can't believe all the expensive condos being built there, too!
Anyone remember Lobel's? That where we got a lot of school clothes, and the ugly gym uniforms we're discussing in the 50's thread. LOL
How about Hank's on Speedwell Ave? A little family-owned store that sold kids' clothes. Darling's? If I remember, that was near Winston's and sold baby furniture? | Karen in LV July 23, 2008 11:59 am | Link |
Yes, I remember Lobel's and the ugly Gray Gym suits we had to wear, along with the polished white sneakers. Hank's I believe was named Shrank's also remember Kresge's Dept store | Clyde Potts July 23, 2008 12:11 pm | Link |
What year did you MHS Colonials graduate? "72" here | Clyde Potts July 23, 2008 12:13 pm | Link |
'70 here! My brother was '74! What grammar school did you go to?
Shrank's was another store. I can't remember what Shrank's sold, but Hank was Hank's Bargain Store. My mom worked there part time while we were in school.
Yep - I remember Kresge's well - they were on one side of the Green, Woolworth's on the other. If I remember, Kresge's had the cheaper prices. (According to my parents...lol) | Karen in LV July 23, 2008 12:26 pm | Link |
How about Burnham Park? I loved to ice skate there with the fire burning in the old stone fireplace. Then, of course, there was Burnham pool with the "Miss Burnham" beauty contest and the dances in the pavillion on a summer night. | Karen in LV July 23, 2008 12:30 pm | Link |
Hi everybody!!!!
Yeah Karen I see what I started and then wasn't on here to participate!!! What I was looking for guys was oldies concerts for when I come up...
Now let's see I graduated Mo'town High in 1977. I went to Lafayette Junior High School, and was at George Washington Elementary till 3rd grade and Thomas Jefferson till 6th.
My uncle's ran the barber shop in Morris Plains till a few years ago on Speedwell Ave.
I lived on Speedwell Ave till I graduated high school.
My dad owned his own typewriter business, and he also drove the school bus for most of his life.....if you grew up in Mo'town you probably know my father.
I remember August Moon, The Jewel Box, Epstein's, Bamburger's, the Community Theater, that church whose bell always tolled on the green, the recycled jean shop (1970's), Frank's fish market on Speedwell, my friend Dominick's dad's place La Rinachande , Rago shoe repair, etc etc.
I also remember racing around the green....
I do remember Burnham Park...we all used to hang out there.
Lobel's??? My mom got our clothes there every season!
Karen-you grew up on Early Street?? | Debbie July 23, 2008 5:48 pm | Link |
Debbie - do we know each other? I think we might! Drop me an email! :) | Karen in LV July 23, 2008 6:34 pm | Link |
Remember Vian's Market on the corner of Mills and Early? That was a favorite stop for h.s. kids sneaking out of school. ;) | Karen in LV July 23, 2008 6:51 pm | Link |
Lived in Morristown from 1997 to 2003. Since then it has completly changed so many new buildings. It is becoming more high end and losing a lot of its charm. To many banks and condos. | Matt July 23, 2008 7:01 pm | Link |
I agree, Matt. It's not the small charming town from the old days. It's hardly recognizable from what I knew when I grew up there. It's quickly becoming a city. | Karen in LV July 23, 2008 7:05 pm | Link |
Hi,
Yeah Matt I was long gone by then. I have been back to see family and for reunions and it has changed, I believe for the worst! I guess they think they have made progress.
So there seems to be quite a few people here from Mo'town!
I left around '77-'78, moved to Hackettstown, near the fish hatchery, and then to Lake Hopatcong. Used to go to a place called the Lighthouse back then :)Seems like a million years ago, but really about 30 | Debbie July 24, 2008 6:01 pm | Link |
