Good Mexican Food

Okay folks - - I have been here, a transplant from Texas, for 3 months now. I am adjusting well to pretty much everything except the taxes and the lack of good mexican food. HELP!!! Just where does one go for good TexMex? I am desperate!

I had some takeout yesterday from El Primo and it was very good, not like Chevy's or South of the Border, authentic I think, LOL. The tostada and empanadas were delicious as were the burritos. I didn't care for the rice and beans, preferring the puerto rican version more. They're green sauce and pico was very good and daughter said the guacamole was also good. All home made stuff!

El Coyote in Netcong (on 46 going east) is a decent Mexican place! I have been there a few times.

I LOVE el Coyote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's not tex-mex though.

I used to work on a cruise ship that stopped in various parts of Mexico (at least once a week) and the food at el Coyote is pretty similar to the food I ate in Mexico. I love, love, love, love, love it.

Also, I'm from Colorado which has as many Mexican restaurants as New Jersey has Italian. And I say "thumbs up, El Coyote!"

Claudio's Tex Mex in the Pathmark Plaza on Lakeside Blvd in Landing has been there for a bit over a year now. I've enjoyed what things I'm allowed to eat from there and there was a favorable article written about them in the Daily Record about 2-3 months ago. They're family owned and operated by very pleasant people.

My favorite though has always been the Rattlesnake Ranch Cafe in Denville http://www.rattlesnakeranchcafe.com/
They also serve exotic meat dishes after 6PM depending on what's freshly available - I've tried Alligator, Rattlesnake, Moose, Wild Boar, Buffalo, Kangaroo and a couple others I can't remember offhand. The sauces and seasonings cpmpliment that meat just perfectly! Delicious!

We tried to go to EL Coyote last night. I was so looking forward to left overs today! They are closed for vacation til the 14th. There was a cabinet co. truck there so maybe they are doing minor renovations also. They make amazing quacamole and fried ice cream!! Where is El Primo?

There is an AWESOME place Main Street in High Bridge...the name escapes me though. It's super cheap, great food, and BYOB. It's at the end of Main before you turn right to go unter the train trellace. Casa Maya, I think??

Blah! We've been calling El Coyote since Monday! I'm glad to finally know what's going on. We were afraid that they'd closed for good. I definitely recommend El Coyote. The place itself could use a little TLC but the food is great!

Rattlesnake Ranch is not only a bit of a drive, I found it to be way overpriced! It's a cute place, and there's a spot to eat outside, but a bit overrated.

The best Mexican food I'd ever had? New Hope, Pennsylvania. Ok, ok, a bit of a ride...but it's worth it. Plus, New Hope is a great town, so you could make a day trip out of it - it's about an hour from where I live. It's a little place called the Blue Tortilla, and although the price of entrees runs a little high, it's authentic stuff! A lovely Mexican couple do all the cooking and the serving and it has a nice ambiance too. I guarantee you'll come home with some jars of their salsa...

Not to be a debbie downer, but you're seriously not going to great Mexican you are used to being from Texas, it's like trying to find good Italian there if you are from NJ. ;) After I got a frozen enchilada at El Coyote, they were marked off my list.

The best texmex i've had were in San antonio and Arizona - i haven't found anything in NJ that compares, sorry!

I have been reading this forum for a week or so.. read the reviews for El Primo and suggested to 2 co-workers that we try it for lunch. I won't be going back. We walked in, and were ignored. So we found our menus on our own. We ordered 2 orders of encchiladas, tacos and an order of guacamole. Ok, so we sit down. One of the enchilada orders never came out, neither did our guacamole. Once my order of enchiladas did come, they were good.. but not at all how they were described on the menu. The tacos had just meat, nothing else. Maybe the guacamole is good, but we wouldnt know. The floor was filthy. Just my two cents.

The prices were good, granted. This was just today.. left around 12:50. The floor was very dirty. I honestly felt very unwelcomed.

Downtown Dover has a lot of neat little Mexican restaurants, though I like "Azteca" the best.

BUT El Coyote is my absolute FAVORITE!!! I always leave there stuffed, and oh so happy. Their food is soooooo good!!!

Oh! Here's a question of my own, as long as we're on the topic of Mexican food. I'm expecting, and am not supposed to have spicy food. Is there such a thing as a Mexican dish that's NOT overly spicy? (Especially one that's served at El Coyote) ;)

Thanks!
Diana

Wow, I'm shocked that so many people enjoy El Coyote! I've only been once, but it all tasted like microwaved frozen food to me. My dining companions felt that same. I'm very anxious to try El Primo!

Disapponted. I was there today also. Your taco fixings are on a table to the back. You put them on your self. They should have told you that. I would mention it to the owner.

When I go to El Coyote I usually get the veggie burrito and quacamole as an appetizer... and if I can possibly fit it, fried ice cream with strawberries. Mmmmmmmm... none of it is too spicy, but all of it is delicious.

I'm surprised to hear people say that it tastes frozen or microwaved. I haven't been there in awhile, so maybe something has changed. I hope not because it was the best stuff around.

Re: Good Mexican FoodMy favorite is Ojedas. The Place is Loud, the tables rock, the chairs need to be replaced. But I prefer it. Ohhhhhhh, I suppose you wanted someplace in NJ.

Had lunch there Monday. Nancy Edwards joined us from across town. She had the biggest Swirl they could make. I would still be there if I had done that.

Yeah, Margarita.... I was kinda hoping to find a place up here to have some TexMex. I can't jump on a plane everytime I need a Ojedas fix, but I am glad to know they are still kickin' down there.

El Coyote - el yuck. I moved to this area last year and hear great things about El Coyote and so we went. I ordered chicken fajitas and my friend ordered something with seafood. We waited a good 15 minutes before someone acknowledged us. Our drinks took another 15 minutes and we probably got our food 45 minutes later. I could tell she must have forgotten us because my fajitas were COLD. I don't mean luke warm, I mean cold. The rice was hard and crunchy. The chicken had zero taste. I basically didn't eat it and am still mad at myself to this day for actually paying for it. We will never go back. I'd much rather go to Jose Tejas!

Ojedas! Are you talking Dallas! We loved that place! Tell me it's Dallas you're referring to, Maragarita! We went there every week, and our 5 year old was like, "we're going here.... AGAIN!!!" the only thing that kept him happy was the $.25 ball mcachine that played baseball in the entry way. He was so tired of us going there, but we couldn't get enough! How about that hot salsa!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, from San Antonio here. And the post above was right. Cannot find good Mexican in NJ!! However, Don Jose on Route 10 in East Hanover (by Home Depot) is THE BEST & CLOSEST I've found so far to real Mexican food in NJ. Their beans are delishish!

I went to El Coyote to p/u food one day @ lunch and I thought the place smelled like, ahem, pee-pee.
Sorry, El Coyote, lovers. Just the stench that hit me as I waited for my soup.
