Electricity cost for pellet stove

How much did your electric bill rise after installing a pellet stove?

It doesn't take much to run a pellet stove. It doesn't use a lot of amps to run. Where I am EVERYTHING is on electric. Water pump, cooking stove, pellet stove, washer/dryer and a few extras. This months bill was about $167.00.

Something must be wrong, our's jumped over an additional $200.00.

Tidy,

Go back to your past bills and check the E's (estimates) versus the A's (actuals). Often when these decrpeancies occur, they have estimated one or more previous months very, very, low and then "make up for it" on the current month via an actual reading.

For example, if Nov and Dec were estimates and October was an Actual and very low --- then their stupid program uses October to estimate Nov and Dec. If you are using a lot of xmas lights or electric heating ----- you pay a low estimate but run up a bill that catches you in the actual in January.

JCP&L's estimation program stinks. You can ask for an actual I think at any time.

Probably not your issue, but it does happen more often than you think. They over estimated me during the "outages" and ended up crediting me for 3 months. Two months free and one month at $80. Had the nerve to tell me it was my fault for using budget payments and auto payments and not checking my bills against the meter.......

Two years ago, I got under estimated just like you and paid my highest bill ever in Feb ---- highest bill in over 20 years because of estimates and the extra electric heat for that very cold month. Luckilly I saw the E's and guessed it was coming. Then it takes 2-3 months for the autobudget plan to rectify itself.

We have a new pellet stove in use this year and had one for the last 20 years. Never saw any change in electric bill from using a pellet stove. Our electric bill went up this month too but we expected that due to extensive use of outside Christmas lights over the Holidays.

I agree your electric bill shouldn't have gone up that much

- Make sure it's actual not estimated bill
- Look at the billing period make sure from the last time you paid your bill did cross with this new bill and isn't two months of electric
- Did you have a lot of Christmas lights?
- If it's super high next month maybe make sure the pellet stove is hooked up right

It's close to 75 in here right now and trust me it wouldnt be if it doubled our bill

Checked bill, states is was an Actual Meter Reading.

It also states that it is a prorated bill, when I checked JCPL web site the definition for a Prorated Bill is:

"If this is on your bill, the current billing period is for less than 26 days or more than 35 days or a rate change occurred during the current billing period."

My bill states I was charged for 28 days, so I am guessing that they had an rate increase.

I realize that the electric bill always goes up during the holiday season. We really don't have any extra lighting, small 4 ft. Christmas tree.

Still $200.00 more in electric is not saving me the money I thought it would by getting a pellet stove.

I am befuddled.

Tidy --- check the previous month's bill to see if there were estimates. If so, and if they estimated low, then this month's acutal might reflect the higher electric for this month as well as to make up for last month (where they MIGHT have estimated and therefore estimated low). So you end up paying two months of higher than exepected costs or $100 extra per month rather than $200 for one month.

And if they estimated the TWO previous months, it could even be 3 months of catch up..... so $66 extra for each of the three months rather than $200 for one month.

It's still a $200 surprise no matter how you rationalize but if that's the case, then you might be able to see it coming the next this these boneheads estimate you into the poor house.

What brand is the pellet stove? Different manufactors use different electrical designs. However 200 dollars is nuts. I have a HARMAN runs me 7 dollars a month.

Just got off the phone with JCPL. My last bill was estimated but should still not have jumped $200.00. I was directed to go outside and read the numbers off the meter. It would appear that the meter reader made a mistake and my new bill should have been
$178.56. The JCPL rep stated my account would be adjusted. That is good news.

But of course I should have asked how could a meter reading be that much off. I was
so wrapped up with the new dollar amount I did not ask.

Does anyone know how to read a meter? I plan on being keeping an eye on wether the bill is estimated vs actual. But would really like to know how to read the meter.

Thanks all for your help.

Tidy, just like reading clocks from left to right.Just dont jump to the next number befor it actually passes.
