Panther Pub
There's another thread on it, but from what I was told month end, but that was from someone working in the PV Mall.
It's not the in the Pub location, its in the strip mall. And from what i hear it is a small place. Supposedly a Wine Bar.
BTW - How can it be a wine bar if it's supposed to be a sports bar? Anybody have correct info?
It's a sports bar and it's called Panther Pub. THe Pub part of the name has nothing to do with the old "pub" which was in the hotel, now converted into the assisted living facility.
Guess I'll just ask Tech Cleaners. THe owner knows everything :-)
lol @calico it's a sports pub trust me, we get all the scoop from Mattar and every other regular in there....
If they do not have Harpoon IPA at this new establishment, I will only go there once, and even that will be under protest.
Wow, there are so many GREAT IPA's, double IPA's, and Imperial's out there, sorry you limit yourself to just one:(( Dubhe
@BeerSnobGirl I hardly limit myself, but you have to AT LEAST have a lowest common denominator ;)
do they have coors light ?
i too am confused about how a 'wine bar' becomes a 'sports bar'; isn't wine french?
i don't appreciate the french.
@BrotherDog perhaps someone got confused when someone complained about sports fans "Whining" when their team loses...
Okay really??? It's a bar with a pub menu. A full bar with beer, wine and liquor. New York State separates a liquor license like that...not New Jersey..we go for it all here cats. I know we are in the playoffs but lets not get confused. sports bar? wine bar? Giants? San Francisco?
If you want the scoop just stop in the vanilla market and talk to the owners they are taking applications so I'm sure they are connected in some way!
Ah the PV Pub.......spent much time (and money) there downing pints of Bass. Twas a sad, sad day when I found it was closed.
Any update on when it's opening? Someone a while back threw out end of month...which is pretty much now.
It's not going to be sports bar. Just a pub with food and some TVs. They will show games when available but the focus is on being a pub with a casual atmosphere.
Since this place is near Vanilla Market, I'm just posting here to ask if Vanilla Market is still open. I just called and got a generic voicemail, and they're supposed to be open now, according to the Facebook page.
Thanks.
I walked by the Panther Pub on Saturday and peeked in the windows. I couldn't see much, but they had tables and chairs set up... still a few buckets and tools laying around. The sign on the door still said 'opening soon'.
Haven't been able to find a website or facebook page for the Panther Pub either... I'll keep driving by to see if its open yet!
Saw a beer delivery yesterday at Panther Pub!!!
Heard their trying to open within the week
Official word is they'll open Monday, 2/27, they'll be open for Dinner that night and then for lunch and dinner ever day after. The place is beautiful. Great wine list, fireplace and amazing bar. Dinning in the bar or in a quiter, separate room.
Panther Pub is official name. There are 3 big screen TVs in the bar but you can still have a conversation without being distracted. Capacity for eating probably 60 or 70. The manager really knows her beers so some quality draft choices. Same with wine. It's not a sports bar per se but a few photos are local pro team oriented. But the atmosphere is much classier than a typical sports bar.
Yes, I think you could have a beer and enjoy a game.
Sounds good. It will be nice to have a place to go thats close to PV rather than driving all the way into town.
Really looking forward to the opening. My mom, who works for Paintpourri, helped them with the interior window fixtures. Said it's beautiful inside.
We are so excited for the opening! We drive by every night from work and have been watching the progress. Hope the food is as good as the place looks!
As for Mattar's, healthy competition should keep both establishments on their toes.
The owners of Vanilla Market are going to be in charge of the food at Panther Pub.
After reading this..there seems to be a lot of confusion about what is going on here. The pub is being opened Skoda, the man who owns and is the landlord of the whole panther valley strip mall. As too the owners of vanilla market being in charge of the food there, that i have not heard and i have talked to Skoda.
Random Poster,
I know who Skoda is and what he owns. The owners from the Vanilla Market (Lisa & her husband) will be running the kitchen.
Saw the sign today that theyre opening on monday 2/27...I cant wait and Ill absolutely be there!!!!
PANTHER VALLEY PUB is OPENED TODAY 4:00 GO THERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! My son works in the kitchen.. Great food good people and amazing bar selectons......... PV people we have a place to roll to now......
After you all go check it out can you let the rest of us know what the menu is like? What's on the menu? Do they have a full liquor license or just beer and wine?
I will definitely be checking it out this week! Glad to see some competition coming to the 517 stretch. Looking forward it. Please share your experience if you go!
Gorgeous on the inside! Congrats to Marc and Elizabeth on the opening. The menu has appys like fried calamari, waffle fry nachos, cheese platter to name a couple. The rest of the menu are salads (about 3 or so), sandwiches like a pastrami Reuben, turkey burger, saw a burger on there that CR37 will have to try...and then about 10 entrees like fish and chips. I did not eat there but just took a quick glance at the menu. Looking forward to spending time there!
Also beers in tap served in frosted mug! Love that. Have about 6 beers on tap. I know Coors light and Smuttynose but didn't see what else.
Can the next person who goes, please take note of what beers they have on tap? Thanks.
Hi Calico:
They had about ten, but the three that stood out to me were the following: Smutty Nose, Yeungling and a white beer that starts with A. Alawash, maybe?
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I was enjoying my pinot noir!
I say we have a HL happy hour there, stat!
@Bryan, I didn't see wings on the menu, but OMG, the best fish tacos appetizer ever! Yum! Very nice pub! When you open the door it gets cold inside fast! I think they were trying to find an outlet for an electric space heater so it wouldn't be so bad, but oh well! Great little menu!
Good fish tacos are one of my all-time favorite things to eat!
Lisa_50 - was the fish grilled or fried?
So excited to go!
I love fish tacos too. Yum.
How big of a place is this? Meaning, approximately how many seats at the bar and how many tables?
They have wings. I didn't have any, but they looked and smelled great!
The atmosphere is warm and cozy. The menu is varied and includes all of the pub standards you would expect in a pub, but with a lot more. Service is fantastic.
Calico, the bar probably has about 18-20 seats plus a few pub tables by the bar. There are also a few regular dining tables near the bar and a room with more dining tables that looks like it could also be used for private parties too.
tacos looked baked to me, weren't fried, just awesome! i'll have to check out the wings, love them! The dining room has only 10 tables.
I went last night with a couple of girlfriends and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! Great ambiance, good food, and excellent service. It was very cozy and had a great Pub feel to it. We had the Turkey Burger which comes with this amazing onion sauce on it, Calamari that is made with a recipe from New Mexico and had such a great taste to it nice and light, the grilled cheese which is made like a panini, and these AMAZING handmade pretzels with a melted cheese dip!! Can't wait to go back and try some more great things.
Wow... a new place opening up, with nothing but RAVE reviews?!?! A first for HL!! Have to check the place out... since I was sorely disappointed with Marley's when it first opened, and Blackstones (lost a great one with Smokehouse), and haven't read great things about Crystal Swan...
I have since returned to Marley's, frequently, but sit & eat at the bar. The bar food is very good, good atmosphere. Still don't eat off the dinner menu or sit in the dining room. I dig the bar side.
Can't wait for the Irish Pub (Charlie Brown's) to open someday... big potential there... waiting with baited breath...
does anyone know the hours? also what time does the kitchen close? i know this is occasionally different than when the actual pub/bar/restaurant closes.
Thanks to Mark & Elizbeth for creating a wonderful atmophere and bringing in Lisa & Freddy owners of Vanilla Market(who's long time customers already know they are amazing) to oversee and manage the rest!
I went to Panther Pub and the food was great! The atmosphere was perfect and our server Deeana was so friendly and attentive!!!! This business is going to do well up here but they definately need to increase the portion sizes a wee bit for us country folk :)
I agree Shana. Love the atmosphere but I agree about quantity. Not a lot of fish in fish taco for the price...tasted more of the wrap than the fish. My husbands reuben was really really good and the fish and chips were okay but both of our fries were soggy. We will definitely go back and try again and we are hoping for much success to the new owners. Very happy we have a place close to home!
its the first week guys the place needs to get its legs but you make it sound great ill be there in an hour
Just got back from my first visit to the pub. I liked it. I had a pint and the Reuben along with some good conversation at the bar. I thought the quantity was fine. It was $16 for the sandwich platter & the beer without the tip. I will definitely patronize this place again. I hope they do well.
Does anybody know their hours? I can't find a website or facebook page...they should really get something up so people can find information. A facebook page takes 10 min.
pvmom,
If you are in PV, how far from this place could you be? It might be worth a 2 minute drive to the pub itself just to see if the hours are on the door. Or perhaps a call to information would provide you with a phone number...
I believe the hours are 4:00pm - 9:00 (weekdays) and 4:00 - 10:00 (weekends) but the bar stays open later. They are suppose to start opening for lunch this coming Thursday.
My 2 cents: Atmosphere is great. Food/menu - just ok. Liquor/beer proces - a bit high. Overall - just ok - not the kind of place I would go out of my way to frequent. I expect it will do fine just because it is "convenient".
Betterman, 1 pint, 1 reuben, $16 dollars, how much was the good conversation ? Too rich for my blood, Another One Bites the Dust.....
Ate there last night for first time. Husband's turkey burger was good, my grilled chicken sandwich a bit dry, fries were excellent. Have a Happy Hour but doesn't include wine....they need to change that! Service was excellent, a real cozy place, especially with the fireplace going. Will definetly go back.
Great experience with a great feel. as soon as i walked in, they just had customers streaming in. always says a good thing about a new restaurant. food looked a little pricey, but id rather pay more than have to drive farther and get worse service.
Agreed JFdaGR8. I don't mind paying a little extra if the ambiance is what I am looking for. Love the Panther Pub and super happy to have it in the neighborhood.
From the sound of the posts here, Panther Pub is not a sports bar. Is this a correct assumption?
Thanks Katie.
Was thinking of trying it tonight, but I bet it will be too crowded. We'll see.
@calico696 go early as you can or Saturday, it wasn't crowded last Saturday around 4:30
Thanks Lisa, I don't want to eat dinner at 4:30 though. I'm not old enough for that yet. ;-)
@calico okay just wanted to suggest a time to go, that's all. I was just letting you know that is a good time , otherwise Fri nite is a zoo starting at 5:00.
Lisa - I totally understand and appreciate you post. I think we will be skipping it tonight then, as there is no way we can get there before 6. Might try for a week night next week then.
TFulp - We'll have to catch up another time.
Does anyone have a phone #? Information, whitepages.com, etc could not help me. Thanks in advance!
The place was very nice, wait staff friendly and the food was great! Beer was cold . Much nicer then most bars in the area. Will visit again soon!
We went last night - my new favorite place in the Hackettstown area! REALLY wonderful English pub atmosphere with beautiful barn siding and brick walls. Terrific lighting and ambiance, furniture and decorations.
Food? Excellent! Shrimp and andouille sausage was outstanding. Chicken pot pie very good. The next table had calamari and wing apps that looked fabulous.
The service was terrific, and the place was packed.
I've always hoped for a really nice pub in this area, and we finally have one. Loved it!
We stopped in and made reservations for 7PM last night. We were really pleased! It was not overly crowded - just busy in a good way. We saw a lot of people that we know which made it more fun. We had the calamari, which was pretty good. Not great - but certainly good. DH had the egg salad and bacon sandwich, and he liked it. The homemade fries were good. I had the grilled romaine salad with shrimp. It was very good and the shrimp were plump and cooked just right. Drinks were fine. The house carbernet was nothing special and we would not order it again. But, it is a pub. We should have been drinking beer, not wine! I had a dirty martini which was just right. Service was excellent! All of the servers were prompt, friendly and made no mistakes. They checked on us often, but we did not feel hurried at all.
We will definitely go back. We are regulars at Mattar's, and will still go there. The Pub is a different kind of place. Loved the homey feel!
It's pretty good. Some of the menu items are a little odd - waffle fries as nachos? Weird. However, the burger is solid as are the wings, but I must admit the beer list is a bit mystifying - lots of microbrews except for yuengling and miller light... bottle beer selection is limited too, which is surprising.
The place is cramped and about 1/2 the size it should be - obviously there are factors that limit its size and I understand that. We'll see if the "new" factor lasts and they keep a solid flow of regulars. The PV pub was tired and old when it shut down, and with the advent of Mattars second coming, it was basically done. I'm glad its gone and this place has risen from the ashes... it's a great alternative to Mattars and 517. For a new place it is running pretty smoothly... though I did see a guy get burnt by the espresso machine while he was having dinner with his son which was a bit disconcerting...
Also, phone number is 908-441-6127 I know that's been driving people crazy... hard to believe they open this beautiful pub and have no website, facebook page, or listing info - this is, after all, 2012!
We stopped in with friends. Very nice atmosphere. But I must say fish taco's were yucky. Prices are high and they need to have specials and lower there prices. We won't be back. $16 for fish and chips OMG, had the pretzel appetizer, two rolls came out. Usually there is enough for everyone. They really need to step it up and give some more food. $8. for a quarter glass of wine is rediclulous. I was hoping for a decent price place. I wish we went to pump house. Oh well the help was nice except it took 15 minutes for check.
$27.00 for a steak that is about the size of a filet even though it looked good.
I was there on Saturday night to grab a beer with a friend, and I agree that it looks nice inside, kinda tight by the bar area, and the prices are too high. Two pints were almost $12 before tip.
I fear that they'll have decent business for a few months while people try them out, but look at the trend already with losing potential repeat business due to the prices.
Knock the beer down to ~$4 a pint and it would be the go to place for many people.
I was there Saturday night as well and the top two beer draft prices on the list were $4 a pint? So I'm not sure were your coming from Mark. So, you can get a pint for $4 at the Panther Pub...and one dollar less during Happy Hour for all drafts etc.
$4 should be for good beer, not the lowest price (of a bottle in some cases).
I think this would be a good mix for a bar in Warren County:
Bottles - $2 to $2.50
Domestic Draft - $3 to $3.50
Import Draft / Micros - $4 to $4.50
Happy hours could be 3 for $5 bottles and $0.50 off pints.
I'd rather see generally lower prices than dirt cheap happy hours. This isn't limited to this pub either. Get us in with reasonable beer prices and I'll buy appetizers and wings or other food, as well as several pints. Charge $6 after tax and tip for one beer and I'll sit there and drink it slowly and buy less overall.
Just saw this on facebook:
SAINT PATRICK'S DAY AT THE PANTHER PUB
Saturday, March 17th
*AUTHENTIC & RARE WOOD BARRELL TAPPING!!! 8PM
"get your glass & get your free beer!"
*BAGPIPER* 7:30 & 9:30

Here is the link:

I agree with mark , but the high prices do seem to make sense when one considers that these are craft microbrews that are probably wholesaleing pretty high as well. Of course, that gives them the opportunity to charge more, because then it becomes difficult to compare it to other places in the area, since they don't have "six point" or "Allagash White" or "Smutty Nose IPA". Yuengling is a local brew - and it's not very good. It should be $3 to (max) $3.50 a pint. Also, they should chill with the micros and go with a Stella/Heineken something that's "upscale" for a macrobrew.
Heineken and stell aste still going to end up being 4-5 for a pint, micros are the future as peoples taste buds evolve for the next few times only drink good beer stay away from the crap(coors, miller, bud) and you will see that good beer will triumph the crappy macros. You also have to relize this is a place to make money not give beer/food/etc away for free, if you want to go there go if not stop complaining about the prices,
Let's face it...the Pub is trying to compete with Mattars to get some of their customers. (certainly not trying to compete with Niles or 517!). Here's my opinion:
DECOR/ATMOSPHERE - Toss-Up - although if you like "cozy" the edge goes to Pub. Having said that, the Pub bar area is way too cramped
FOOD/MENU - Mattars - No contest on quality and breadth of menu
PRICES - Toss-Up
SERVICE - Toss-Up (Pub may have slight edge with the attentive girls but then again, i don't see the owner walking aroud welcoming and talking to customers like Mattar does)
CONVENIENCE - Toss-Up
Bottom line (for me): if you want a drink or two - either one will do. if you want to eat go to Mattars.
Just one person's opinion. What say you????
Looking forward to the Irish Pub/Rest opening in the CB's location. If they are good and I think they will be Marlys will be no competition. As for Mattars the food is overrated. From what I have heard the Irish bar will be a 2nd location for the owner. If thats true its a good sign as he/she is not a novice. Anyone have any more info ?
You really can't compare The Panther Pub to Mattar's for food, as the Pub is just that...a PUB! It has PUB food.
We tried it and thought it was fun although everyone is correct in that the bar area is really, really tight.
We had the fish tacos, fish and chips, a cheeseburger, Smuttynose and Six Point beers.
The fish tacos were good but we did take off the red onion ring slices that were on them. Never had seen onions on a fish taco (maybe in the salsa but not otherwise).
The fish & chips was good - definitely could taste the beer batter but the fries were soggy because they put the fried fish on top. Would be better if they put the fries next to the fish instead of underneath it.
The burger was good but not as good as Salt. The fries that came with the burger were crisp and yummy.
Beer was good.
Dessert menu looked great but we were too full and said we'd go for dessert some other time.
Service was slow. We weren't in a rush but other people around us were complaining.
I agree with Andrewm...if you don't like the prices, don't go.
All-in-all, a great place for a drink and some simple food. It's close to us and we'll be happy to support it.
Regarding the "If you don't like it, don't go" statements...
You realize that those comments aren't doing the restaurant(s) any favors, right?
Constructive criticism of a business can only help them. It isn't like we're "bashing" them needlessly. We're just discussing a point that at least several people have brought up, with some minor suggestions that they can take to heart and possibly incorporate to ensure that the broadest range of customers remain satisfied. They're new in town, and if I were a new business owner I would LOVE to hear the initial feedback from the first customers, good or bad.
Or... we can just "not go"... which means that when I'm with friends there's more people who won't go... and that's NOT GOOD for any business.
Went last night w/ girlfriends and finally ate there for the first time. I ordered the fish tacos and in my opinion they were delicious. I would absolutely get them again. It's on the appy menu so it's a smaller portion of 2 tacos but I prefer that. The fish is grilled and it is definitely a lighter option. I took some of the red onion off bc there was too much on there for my taste, however it was a nice, unexpected addition to the meal. For bevies I had a Bombay Sapphire extra dirty martini and it was made to perfection and then I tried the Allagash White which was awesome!!!
"You really can't compare The Panther Pub to Mattar's for food, as the Pub is just that...a PUB! It has PUB food."
Sure you can... the point is: 1) if you look at the menu items that overlap (i.e. some appetizers, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, steak, etc) then the prices are very comparable and, in my opinion, Mattars has better quality. 2) Plus you get ALL of the other menu options that Mattars offers that the Pub does not. Ergo - it's a better place to eat.
One example: The steak in Pub is $27, the NY Strip in Mattars is $25.
The Panther Pub does not have, what I consider, a traditional Pub menu (like say, Kennedy's)....I believe that's because they're trying to be a bit more "upscale" and compete with Mattars. My point is, I don't think they can win that battle in the long run.
Also...my comments are meant to be constructive observations (I'm sure these are being read)...they don't mean that I won't go there.
At least a business opened that isn't a chain. It beats an empty storefront or chain. We need business in this town.
I think it is decent for where we all live. You cant beat the location. I commute from NYC everyday and love that I can grab a quick "real" martini with a somewhat normal crowd.
I love the panther pub and mattars :) no need to compare.. i just like both places. life is good!
Had lunch at the Pub. I think it's really a place to drink not eat. It's very nice inside. service was great, but I just can't see paying 12 dollars for an app. Some of the entrees were as much or cheaper. I don't care if the french fries are hand cut, they were soggy. I ordered the fish and chips which was very good (the fish not the fries).Maybe not putting fried battered fish on top of the french fries would be a good idea.I choose that because I was thinking about getting the calamari appy but when I saw it was as much as the fish and chips I figured I'd get more for my buck. I would go again but not to eat.
luvjazz, I would say so. It's not a meat market by any means and I have yet to see any creepers. That being said, keep in mind that the men who typically sit at the bar are very nice, mid 50's, and are just looking to chat (with anybody!).
katievits24 - window treatments AND keep in mind that the men who typically sit at the bar are very nice, mid 50's, and are just looking to chat (with anybody PERFECT. I gotta get there again.
Luvjazz: I went there alone on their first night and talked to two nice men at the bar. 40 and 50somethings. It was not a pickup convo or scene at all.
Went to the Panther Pub on St. Patrick's Day. The service was excellent. The food was very good and the overall price was in line with what I was expecting to pay. All of the wait staff were exceptional and the atmosphere was exactly what we wanted. I hope they do well.
My husband and I went there last night. Enjoyed the atmosphere. Prices were right on for what we had. Sat at the bar. Bartender very good. Will definately go back again.
REALLY nice place! Some interesting microbrews on tap. We gave the wings a solid B+ which is pretty high on our list.
Hubby and I went to the Pub last night, have to say it was a little pricey but the fish tacos that I have been wanting to try were amazing, would go back for those, the service was very good and we got there about 7pm, good thing because it filled up fast...
We have enjoyed several visits to the Panther Pub. No complaints at all. It's nice to have options and that place is a fine option!
Enjoy your options!
Hello. Am I missing their Facebook page or website or any information on the web?
I'm totally frustrated trying to get people to go and I can only recite lines from the forum, but not show them anything concrete on the place. I'd like them to look and decide on food and prices and everything, but boy this is like a needle in a haystack.
I know someone listed the number, but who wants to call and ask a list of questions? If anyone knows somewhere to point me to their menu or anything, that would be great. Thank you in advance.
Here's their facebook
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003602646755
I hate when businesses only have Facebook pages... I don't use Facebook but you need to become a member just to view a menu? Get real...
Seriously, for like $4/month you can get an actual website/domain.
Mark:
I agree! I don't use facebook either & will not give personal information just to see a menu!
And I will not go to the Pub -- or any restaurant, without knowing the menu beforehand because of my dietary restrictions.
It's a foolish business practice -- they lose potential customers.
I don't mind the Facebook thing, but I agree that I need to see a menu before I go anywhere to eat.
The website is helpful and nice, but - I hate (it's a pet peeve) website that have music immediately. My sound is always on and when music blares up unexpectedly, I know I always click out. Imagine when people are in the office - lol - sounds like a porno going.
It also was slow loading. It's a nice site, with the colors, to me. Just my opinion. I would have them ditch that music. No need for it.
Enjoyed the place. Mixed reviews on food, some loved, a few were just okay, and great service and atomosphere. Overall, didn't think prices were bad. Loved it.
FF, I get Joe Cocker singing "You Can Leave Your Hat On". Do others get a different tune? It is a great song for sure.
I do agree, Eric Clapton always gets a Whoo Hoo!
Not much of a menu! Wonder if they are planning to enlarge it after they are open longer?
So we complain for a website. They put up a website and now website is not good enough. Good grief.
Steve-0
Don't love that song and the window is too small to scroll through. Website needs work but it is usable.
