HackCATStownLife

Just thinking we should either change the name of this forum or, at the very least, create a new "cats only" forum so the cats can find other cats looking for roommates.

More cats than humans in our town. I told the census bureau that in our weekly call today.

Wild Animal - "Is that cat?"... I don't think you understand, that isn't Tigger's cat, that's Tigger! ;-) Tigger is not a Maine Coon, he doesn't have that kind of fluffy coat at all. He's got the looks, but a Lewis Black personality. Life's not always simple in our house...

Thanks cbel, I like the fact that this group is really good at running with this stuff. I lived on Rutgers' tree hugging campus, and there were feral cats EVERYWHERE because kids would get caught with cats in their apartment and then release them. Bob Barker would be pissed if he knew what was going on in those woods...

And Hackettstown seems to have more cats.

I have two cats that are looking for pen pals. Taylor is a 6 year old who enjoys being brushed, tripping you when you walk, and foaming at the mouth during rides in the car. Acceptable cat age range: 4 to 8.

Her brother Chuck is also 6, but the similarities end there. Chuck is a recovering cocaine addict who spent some time in lock up for forging prescriptions. I suspect him of stealing my beer, and he DEFINITELY wears my clothing around the house while I'm not home. I think a good pen pal for Chuck would be an adult cat posing as a 6 year old who can report back if Chuck mentions anything illegal.

I look forward to coordinating this.

Slade, that photo of his 4, are they lined up on his side of the bed? I like the photo of your 5 as well. I like the cat on the arm looking at the dog like, you need to move. That's so nice you have a Brady Bunch pet family. :)

Lynnada Lynnada
Dec '11

@Lynnada - that is MY side of the bed. They know the hand that feeds them and that my other hand cleans their litter boxes.

@Lori - that's my secret ploy to get them off the couch..........I sit on the floor to give the dogs belly rubs & the kitties a good amount of love & some scratchin between the ears, then when they're still on the floor, I hop on the couch, stretch out and claim my spot!

I am continually amazed that all 7 pets have such distinct personalities. Two cats are so loving & people friendly to the point of being annoying. One is completely aloof and if she rubs up against my leg, I almost feel honored. In the picture of the 5 of mine on the love seat, the cat & dog on the right are inseperable. The other dog has severe separation anxiety and is a great dog until I leave the house. I have to crate her when I leave or let her in the yard to watch me walk across the street to my neighbor's home. The little tiger/calico cat (sitting on the arm of the love seat) is named Miller Lite, but we call her miller da killer because she's the one most likely to bring us a prize when she gets out.

And for anyone that's wondering, they're all rescues. Although I don't keep track, I think we spend more per month on food, litter & vet bills for them than we do for food, toilet paper & doctor bills for us. If you're an animal lover, you'll understand why that's ok.

Re: HackCATStownLife

Can I get in on this action?

Mom finally took a decent picture of me, which I think highlights my best assets (my pretty eyes!). And enough with the stupid dog pictures already mom, right?

I am mommy's BFF (best feline friend) and she says I'll always be her best cat ever. I came to her when she was working at a wildlife rehab place, and I needed a home because I had been living in a horse barn because my owner was an older lady who had passed away. Can you imagine - ME - a princess - in a barn?! No, me either. Now, my feet only touch carpet. And I have special bed privileges because I'm a special princess. Did I mention how special I am? Mom and I feel in love immediately.

That said, I still have room in my fancy heart for a handsome boy cat! Warning: must not be a dumpster diver or rat-eater. I have *standards.*

Please write back.

Love,
Hazel

Re: HackCATStownLife

I am unsure of Chuck's breed (or his sister's), as they are adopted from MSPCA without any documentation as to their ancestry. Chuck weighs in at about 17 pounds, his sister closer to 15. I say Maine Coon, my wife says "Shut up CR37!"

Taylor is a bit more shy, and probably won't come on here. I'll post a picture of her, also lying on her back.

(Not sure why it is upside down when you open it, and I am not aiming to find out)

CR37 - They're all fur then. Call me when they reach 22lbs. ;-)

Jesse James Jesse James
Dec '11

I'd be calling from a kitty funeral if either hit 22lbs.

CR37 - You say that now, but when it really happens you and I both know that 15 lbs was just a short time ago... ;-)

PS My grandmother in PA had seen a neighbors cat go from 22 to 28 without blinking. The cats name? "Pumpkin".

CR37 and GC: My Katie, RIP, weighed about 20 lbs and was miserable. She really had no quality of life. Tigger seems to carry his weight well. So, who knows?

Besides, he still seems to think he's hot, so good for him!

cbel - Tigger has a lot to teach us all. He's all attitude. He's been 11 lbs as a neglected younger pet with a tape worm and 22 lbs in his own Empire. And all stages in between. He's long and lean so that 18lbs seems quite reasonable. But as long as he's got Miss Kitty, who the ^!*&! cares!! That's a lesson we should all learn...

And I would be Joy Behar to his Lewis Black!

What is up with my crazy cat!? She smacks the water bowl until the water spills onto the floor. THEN she drinks it off of the floor...... Tired of wet socks.

Maja - unfortunately, many fellow cat owners are also wet-sock sufferers. Cats often have a thing with playing in their water bowls. Barny drops one of his toys in his water dish every day. Trying to drown his furry mice, I guess.

Rebecka Rebecka
Nov '12

Sugar consistently stands a foot away from the water bowl, then reaches out with one paw to pull it to her, spills most of it, and then only drinks the little bit left in the bowl. I have no idea why but she's ritualistically OCD about the bowl.

I read this thread and laughed!! I love looking at pictures of cats and to hear the funny stories of what they do :)
Here is a picture of one of the newest members of my 'cat family'. All curled up sleeping on my bed (her favorite place to be!) Her and her four siblings were born to a stray cat that I took in 7 mos. ago. I kept her and one of her sisters. She was born without one of her back paws. Her name is Thumper. She is the sweetest little thing :)

Barny, is your new sister from PAL? I volunteer there and she looks like one of ours...if so, hooray! Congratulations no matter what, as any rescue that gets a fur-ever home is a happy occasion!

Jules Jules
Aug '13

Both Wren and female cat (named "Melinda" temporarily) are from PAL. Wren was living with Patty for some time, and was deemed a difficult-to-adopt adult, because she's really not socialized, so we are going to do whatever we can to get her to come out of her shell. Patience, treats, socialization with nice cat (Barny)... she deserves to be given a real chance at home life, even if she's super shy, and doesn't even like to be petted yet.

Melinda I met today at Petsmart, after telling Patty I wanted a really friendly Calico who would hopefully like to sleep in bed with us. Melinda sure looks like she fits the bill! What a sweety.

We decided to take adults because they usually wait longer to be adopted -- kittens find homes more easily.

Rebecka Rebecka
Aug '13

Rebecka~ that is wonderful you are trying to help Wren come out of her shell....I have 2 semi feral females (both caught a little too old and females I think are tougher) but both are quite happy in our home. They do not like to be touched but are quite comfortable in the house....and with our other cats and 2 dogs. My 2 will be 2 yrs old next month......I got them when they were 3 and 4 months old. Born to a feral mom which also makes it more difficult....but they are all different and I have read amazing success stories! Keep us posted on her progress :)

Hastings Hastings
Aug '13

Rebecka, thank-you for adopting adult cats...there are so many loving, loyal ones that just need a good home. The cute little kittens we hardly ever have trouble finding homes for, but sometimes those adult ones are overlooked. Their owners might pass away or aren't able to care for them anymore and those are the ones that break my heart.

We have a rescue who was very feral and it took a long time for her to become comfortable. My husband had doubts if it would ever happen, but with love, patience and socialization, she became a loving, gentle cat. Her adopted sister also was key in bringing her around. She is my shadow and follows me everywhere!

For anyone on the fence, adopting an adult cat is rewarding! They are wonderful pets. There is a sweet, black cat from PAL that I am trying to find a home for - Twinny. He's on the website if anyone is interested in adopting a sweetie of a cat, check him out - http://www.palpets.org/LookupPetsResult.asp?typ=Cat

This is Gracie - aka Amazing Grace- found in someone's backyard with a huge gash in her chest - long story short - she was fostered, adopted and returned in a day - lived 2 months with a friend of mine who returned her - so she is my permanent spare - slowly turning into a really nice cat - but still has screaming matches with one of my others. Oh yes - I have 5 - 2 by choice - and 3 rescues.........

Jules I checked out the website and I noticed a black cat named Salem, I don't know if you are aware that his adopoted parents (If it's the same cat) put up a thread on HL about a week ago looking for him?

Julie and Max stated that they adopted a cat named Salem on 8/12 and they posted a picture of him. It looks like the same cat that is on your website. It didn't indicate that he was already adopted, unless it just hasn't been updated yet.

Not sure if it's the same cat but here is Julie and Max's contact number 908-684-1765.

FYI- I sent them a post last week asking if they found him yet but no response

Aug '13

Jules - I've met Twinny and he is so affectionate! I think he would sit in someone's lap all day. He's a really awesome cat. The only reason we didn't scoop him up is because we already have 3 male cats, and another male would probably upset the balance. We really wanted a couple females, especially a Calico. My first cat love was a Calico, and I just recently lost her.

Hastings - thanks for sharing your experience with ferals. So perhaps Wren may never be as social as we'd like her to be, but she could still live happily with us in the house? Hadn't thought of that, actually. She may just be a cat that always needs her space, but will enjoy the goings-on around here from a distance.

Wild Angel Wild Angel
Sep '13

Ah, the rare two-headed kitty, espo!

Dolly looks like she could hold her own, Wild Angel. Very cute, and also has a look of determination about her. Are your other two cats male or female? Males tend to give females leeway. Females might make a bit of a hiss, but then usually settle right down (in my experience). I introduced a new female to a very old and very tetchy female Calico, and in a couple weeks, they were sleeping curled up next to one another. Let us know how it goes!

Denis - your cats hit the jackpot when they came home with you. Think of the life they would be living now if they weren't taken in by a kind human...

Re: HackCATStownLife

One of our cats, Max went to the bridge on Wednesday. He had been suffering from kidney disease for about a year and his weight and quality of life had declined. He also had started staying in my bedroom in the last week, where it is quiet and he was away from everyone. We made the difficult decision to end his suffering, I pet him as he passed peacefully. This is one of the last pictures I took of him, a few days before his passing.

His friend Punkin has been looking for him and spending time in all the places he had been in his last week. The fighting between Punkin and Romeo has increased. It would be nice if they are able to become friendly someday, which I doubt, but hopefully they will sort out the new balance in a short period of time.

Fuzzy also wishes to say hello to all the HL cats. He weighs just over 4 lbs, and is the snuggliest kitten you can imagine. His fur feels like silky cotton.

Between the two puppies and the two kittens, our house is pretty much on cuteness overload these days.

Text conversation between DH and I just now:

Me (from vet's office): Guess what. Fuzzy and Petra are both FIV and Leukemia negative, and appear to super healthy!

DH: Awesome!!

Me: That's the good news.

DH: And the bad?

Me: Petra is pregnant.

(Delay of about 5 minutes.)

DH: Do we have a teeny little coat hanger somewhere?

----------------

So I guess my question to my wise fellow HLifers is: should I pack up and run away?

(In case you've lost count, there are currently 12 animals under our roof: 5 dogs of which 2 puppies, and 7 cats, of which 2 are kittens that were left by our barn... one of whom is pregnant)

Iggy - The Poodle Association is working day and night to make sure Fuzzy stays there forever. Just to keep an eye on you. You can thank me later. Circle and "talk"?? Heck, mine jump up on the bed while I'm barely awake and start in with phrases like "we need to have a discussion", "your lazy a@@", "lack of motivation", "things can't go on like this". And that's the nice one who says that. ;-)

Yeah, I know what that's like.

well - Sylvester - my tuxedo - flops on me and makes a subtle little request - ignored he escalates - jumps off me and back on - and says "neow" --runs out of the room and yells NEOW???? - and the cycle continues until I give in - then it's a question of who can get downstairs into the kitchen first ---I might have to video this one of these days - pretty funny

5catmom 5catmom
Jan '14

Rebecca, I just love that picture. Your cats are all beautiful (& your dogs of course). At one time, I was in the same boat...5 cats, 3 dogs. Now I just have 1 of each, along with 2 birds & assorted fish. Yes, how life changes with our animal families. I would adopt so many more if I could.

Re: HackCATStownLife

I suggest taking the request high than the kitchen table. Go on top of the fridge!!

See, he's got plenty of his food, where is mine??

I think Sylvester should just start with immediate escalation. I jump up on top, pound my fists on his chest and yell at the top of my lungs - "You stupid rotten human, wake the hell up and feed us you good for nothing lump of disturbance we got work to do and you just sit there or I'm gonna bite your toes like I used to do with mommy and you know she always got right up..."

Or something. I kinda ramble sometimes.

5catmom 5catmom
Jan '14

I didn't want to start a new thread just for this topic, because it is basically about... cat toenails. (Really.)

I need the opinions of cat people, here.

One of our cats is not approachable. Her name is Wren. We adopted her from PAL (well, technically we're just fostering her, but I don't think she's going anywhere). We chose her because she was the toughest case, she had been sitting in a cage for months, and was probably *never* going to be adopted. Why? She doesn't like people. At all!

She's very happy in our house, though. She *loves* the other cats and even doesn't mind the dogs. During the day, we see her lurking around behind furniture or curled up in her special bed by the window, but at night, that's when it's her time. She romps around and plays with two of the other cats all night. It's basically party time. So she's got a good home and all, but...

She doesn't like it if we try to get near her. She's no longer terrified of us like she was at first, she just doesn't like to be petted. So my question is this: what is happening with her nails?? Is it dangerous that I haven't been clipping them? Do they stop growing at some point? And most importantly: should I put her through the great trauma of trapping her just to cut her nails?

Thanks in advance.

Rebecka Rebecka
Feb '14

Rebecka - as a longtime cat person - I would not worry - assuming she scratches a post or something similar, she should be fine. I have one I rescued and it took him years to want petting. Now he is my mush but I can't hold on to him for anything - nails, brushing, trip to vet ...you name it. His nails are fine. Actually I don't clip any regularly...though on a recent trip to the vet she said it's more important to do the nails of older cats because their nails get thicker and can grow into the pads of their feet. I've never seen that but my two oldest do get nails done occasionally. Anyway bottom line - don't worry about it.........I took my "spare" to the vet for nail clipping and ear cleaning because I knew I'd be shredded if I did it myself and it was a matter of protecting me......

5catmom 5catmom
Feb '14

Rebecka - So long as she has sufficient scratching pads and uses them it will be just fine. Their nails splinter off when they scratch and it actually sharpens them back up. It may be that you have to watch the furniture because the very sharp nails can really do a number on it. But otherwise it's not an issue.

Re: HackCATStownLife

Thank you, both, so much. My mind is at ease. She definitely has her scratching posts, I just wasn't sure that was enough. So happy I don't have to put her through the nail-clipping scenario. I think that would have meant a big set-back for her.

I think our leather couch (see pic) is one of the cats' favorite "scratching posts." It was new just like 2 years ago. Oh well... the price of living with animals! (Small price. Obviously, we're not that hung up on having nice things with all the pets we have.)

Rebecka Rebecka
Feb '14

now there would be a thread - pix and commentary of things our pets have put their mark on ----at least I learned my lesson about wall to wall carpeting - put wood in when I moved here ---flatweave area rugs don't seem to interest them---
hmmm may have to take some pix of destruction....

5catmom 5catmom
Feb '14

Rebecka, I used to have a cat like that. I would just have the vet do it when Nadine went for her check up and shots. She was polydactyl and had 6 toes on all four feet. The nails on some of her extra toes were like crescents or crab claws, so she had some weird stuff going on and she was fine with only having them cut once a year. As she got older, she did start to come around and enjoy being pet and just started jumping up on the bed and visiting me just before she passed. Over the years, we could see that she really wanted attention, but her fear held her back.

Lynnada - I think Wren wants attention, too! I speak to her softly when I see her, and acknowledge her by leaving a treat on the floor, too. But I'm hoping that one day she'll come around like Nadine, and wait for us on the bed, and even enjoy being petted.

jj - your daughter's cat is an attack cat!? ;-)

Rebecka Rebecka
Feb '14

Rebecka - I remember seeing Wren's picture on the PAL site. There was a time right when I had requested some info about a companion cat that Wren might have been one of the choices. I really like taking in the ones that aren't just kittens and thank you every day because they know they don't get as many chances. But while they were 'thinking about it' for who might be best, Sugar and her whole saga unfolded. I still very much like one of the others still at PAL who has been there for quite a long time just like Wren was. I hope that cat gets his home just like Wren does. Even though it would be possible with Tigger gone, two is enough for now particular as they start to adjust and settle. So even though I can't take in another, I'm glad Wren got a home even if it's in a pretty busy household. Now if you could just do something about the poodles mile long locks. ;-)

Re: HackCATStownLife

GC - Tigger is missed, not only by you, but also by us - we will miss his posts. RIP big boy.

When I took Wren home, we had just lost two of our females. So we were looking to get two females to fill our home and our hearts. I was looking specifically for one who would want to sleep in bed with us. So I didn't find that one, but I said, you know what, we have two "spaces," let's give one to a cat who should get a chance, and might not get another one for a long time.

And yes, adult cats are great to adopt! We have friends who are looking to adopt a big (preferably "fat" lol) adult cat, and they asked me to find one for them. I'm so happy to know the ladies at PAL. I can email them, and I'm sure they will have suggestions!

Here is Fuzzy looking particularly handsome and all grown up. He was such a munchkin when he was left at our barn -- just about 4 months old. He has such a more mature look to his face now. He's maybe 5 lbs tops, and won't get much bigger. (We had a home to place him in, but got too attached to him and Petra - so they ended up staying and joining our menagerie.)

Iggles says to tell you he got a fur cut, but the Poodle Association's suggestion of a "shaved-bald poodle" was overruled by the powers that be (Mommy).

Sugar - I loved my brother very much but he lost his battle with kitty cancer almost two weeks ago. Daddy told us when he found out between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We had just the best possible Christmas with Grandma Tuna because we didn't think Tigger would last that long. He was just the best brother and had a long, long life. Even though he was a bit of a megalomaniac.

White Shoes - I didn't know him long, but I still miss him.

I found out today that my boy Chestnut is suffering from renal failure. He is 9 years old and I am deeply saddened at the terrible news. My Mom went and got him low protein food. That is what the vet suggested. Going to keep an eye on him and see how things go. Has anyone dealt with this?

Wild Angel Wild Angel

that's great, Rebecka! can you share what you have done to get to this point with Wren? I have one that does not want to be touched, but very happy & content inside......doesn't hide under a bed all day......just not a fan of being touched :( I got her when she was almost 4 months old

Hastings Hastings
Mar '14

Hastings - for the first couple of months, I just let her settle in and get comfortable here. I knew she was playing with other cats at night, so that was a great sign, and I knew she was eating and looked healthy. So I didn't "bother" her, and didn't try to approach her. Even looking at her made her scared.

Then I would speak softly to her when I would see her, but not look her directly in the eyes. Just so she knew that I knew she was there, and wasn't trying to catch her, that she was welcome.

We do something in the evenings we call "cat roundup." (Which makes us giggle.) We are in the kitchen and say "here kitty kitty" and all the cats come and get treats, milk, good canned food or catnip - something special. She started coming to the "round-ups". Slowly I could get closer to her as I was putting treats or food down. A couple weeks ago I could put the treats right in front of her and she wouldn't bolt. Then I saw she was interested in my hand, and I let her sniff. And then yesterday... I reached out slowly, and she let me pet her!

Hastings, I have one who I "caught" outside. He has only been to the vet once - the day I caught him - for tests, neutering, and shots. He is too slippery and strong for me to hold on to. For several years he hid from most people. Now he is out and around but only 2 people can pet him. He now jumps on my bed as soon as I'm in it and flops over my legs. He sleeps there most of the night and wants to be petted all over. Unfortunately he weighs 17 pounds - hard to get up with him there...........The bottom line is - most come around............and it sounds like yours is content.

He roamed around some neighborhood families and found a humble but friendly abode that gave him food and let him come and go as he pleased. Only problem was the other feline resident of that house said he "waz a troublez maker and gotz fleese", so he couldn't stay unless his future Cousin Zuzu wasn't at home. When it seemed like he was in real trouble he asked to get away, and "Hackettspatch here I come!!" ;-)

Aw, what a story about Tigger's early life, GC. I had no idea he wasn't yours from the time he was a kitty.

Rebecka Rebecka
May '14

Rebecka - My SIL who always calls and is a believer in talking, *wrote me a letter* about Tigger's condition. About 2 hours after I hung up with her arranging a holiday visit. Then 3 days later I'm telling my mom we have to go to Walmart to pick up a cat carrier before leaving the next morning for a 4 hour drive. The 4 hour drive back with a cat that seems like he needs a pit stop like mom does is a story in itself. The cat our of the carrier commandeered the car had his paws on the steering wheel when mom came back from her pit stop. True story.

So is him 7 days later getting caught lounging around the sofa when he said he wasn't coming out from under the bed. He wanted to know if I was "for real or not". I told him it was his home as well as mine so I guess he understood. The same night he jumped up on the couch to watch TV and literally hooked his elbow around my hand and wouldn't let go for the life of him. Thirteen years later and he was asking "what's your point, I'm the Lord Emperor of All That Is". ;-)

So yes, the guy had quite a history of additional details I won't even go into. But he came to me undernourished and with parasites and prior owners who totally were great one minute, and then cut him so loose I can't imagine what that college girl thought of the rest of her family. But when it comes down to it I knew Tigger as a marshmallow inside - what ever his Lewis Black exterior looked like.

I haven't seen a mouse in all the years I've lived in this house, 5cm, but I suppose there's always a first! I'm hoping it's just a harmless little spider or moth.... but they seem way too interested. They are still camped out there, with another cat on the other side of the piano.

The piano was delivered from the city. Hopefully a New York rat wasn't a stowaway!

Re: HackCATStownLife

Whelp, Miss Rebecka, I been staying in the girls section of the house with Grammy and Punkin. I was told I need to meet everboddy all gradual like. Punkin is a bit uptight and doesn't like me running and playing all the time, but she's not too mean about it.

Romeo came visiting and we sniffed noses. Then another time, he came and sniffed my food and toys, and then he left! He didn't even look at me, it was like he didn't see my own self, I knew I was a ninja or maybe a baby panther, but I must be invisible or sumthin! The Mamas, they said to be careful around that creature called Socks. He does think I am a toy since I'm kind of small and fast and never stop moving. He did chase me good once, but he didn't catch me cause I'm fast!

Lynnada Lynnada
Jun '14

You've got so many friends, Lucy! Lucky girl. Romeo is just playing hard-to-get, and Socks is just plain playin'. I bet you'll be curled up with Punkin in no time, too. You are just too cute. You look like you're still a wee kitty. <3

Rebecka Rebecka
Jun '14

She is a wee kitty, actually Punkin's nickname is wee one, so it gets confusing. Lucy is probably around a year old, not sure of her current weight, but she's smaller than Punkin and has the tail of a full grown male cat.

She's so cute, when she hears me go in Mom's living room, she comes running because I always play laser pointer with her.

I think you are right GC. When it was delivered and after my husband put it together we initially thought to ourselves wow this must have been very expensive. But after going on the website I soon realized it was quite reasonable for the quality and design.

You buy anything like that at either Petco or Petsmart and it would cost a lot more.

GC-I dont think so. Wood is cheap.

botheredbyuu2 botheredbyuu2
Aug '14

botheredbyuu2 - MDF is $35 a sheet. And you've got three six foot poles on top of the flat sections that have to be cat sturdy. Even if those are $10 each, with some cheap carpet remnants, you're at $75 worth of materials.

Still cheaper then buying and you do it for the love of your cat.
If you can get free wood, thats even better. ;)

Positive - we have the first tower shown on the wayfair site - unfortunately purchased from petco for a higher cost than listed on the wayfair site - it's a great tower, our cats love it, pretty sturdy, easy to vacuum - only problem we've had is that the "carpet" on the scratching poles gets peeled away from the tube - of course, one of our cats loves to climb the poles like a gymnast, leaping with all four paws at once up the poles in two or three leaps - avoiding landing on the platform in order to leap higher on the poles! ... otherwise, ours is a well used (5 cats) tower that has stood up well and has plenty of options to sit or hide out - often four or even all five are on it at once

Need to share this with fellow cat lovers: I recently saw one of the saddest scenes of my life. I have a spare table set up with a heating pad in front of a window for our cats to enjoy. There were a few on it late one evening, and they were staring intently out the window. There, on the ledge outside, was a stray/feral cat, in the frigid cold, sitting in the darkness looking in at our cats, and it's just like he *knew* they were warm and safe and fed. I felt SO bad. I've been feeding him and trying to trap him in a Hav-a-Heart, but he just won't go in the trap. It has always worked for other ferals who have come to us (and we adopted) but not this one. I've tried tuna, sardines, canned cat food of course, but nothing lures him in. I thought my heart was going to break for him the other night. I just wanted to scoop him up and hug him and bring him and take care of him... but he always runs when he sees us, and he is obviously suspicious of the trap. Any suggestions? No reason not to keep feeding him in the meantime, right? I mean the poor thing, I don't want him to go hungry. Not sure what he would be eating/catching with all this standing snow...

Re: HackCATStownLife

Espo - I apologized for Barny. Really I do. We ALL do! He's been living with too many dogs for too long.

Rebecka - Mowse. Today is perfect time for mowse running around. Mowses run around by bushes trying to get into garages with lotsa stuff. I say gives new kitty mowses. He can has mowseburger with cheese.

In fact, I think I see one now...

White Shoes White Shoes
Mar '15

White Shoes I do hope you are right about the mowse, however, we would like to catch the big guy to bring him to the vet. I know, yuck, right? But we want to at least get him his shots and make sure his carousing (kitty-producing) days are behind him. And maybe he would like a nice home to live inside, instead of being out in the cold all winter.

I've just been PM'd that we should try a drop trap, and we will be lent one. Cross your paws that this works!

Rebecka Rebecka
Mar '15

Rebecka - I hope you are able to catch the kitty and that he/she is ok...........a friend just caught the one that was crying under her house - thought it was feral - two days later she is petting and playing with her ----hoping the kitty is found healthy by the vet and that it finds a great home ---- let us know how you do.............

I'm 9 months pregnant and due in a week. My little Amelia decided to have her 1st heat cycle. I had enough of her shaking her little tush in front of of my extremely oversized Rottweiler puppy, and meowing like a crazy kitty. Took her to get spayed and brought her home this morning. What does she do in the 1st 20 mins? Take out 1 suture and almost another because she wanted to groom herself. What does she get in return? The lovely e-collar. I feel so bad for her wearing this and she is not a happy camper. Although, I will admit, it is slightly funny watching her run into things w/it. Hopefully she heals quickly!

Yes, she seeks out everything remotely warm. A real heat miser. She jumps from the kitchen table up onto the top of the refrigerator (which is right next to that shelf) and then onto the coffee maker. Even funnier is that the refrigerator is a built-in and there is only about 3 1/2 inches that stick out for her to land on.

I've seen Sugar squeeze into 2 inches of open window just to be able to sit on the sill and look at Bird-O-Vision. They can do even more miraculous things, they just won't show us humans.

Romeo once laid balanced on a metal railing, that was only about 1 inch wide and it wasn't even flat.

Lucy can flatten herself out to get under furniture that is about 2 inches from the floor.

Cody can open most doors in our house and sometimes even manages to close himself in the bathroom. He can't get out because he can only reach up and pull down the lever handle and push the door open, so if the door needs to be pulled towards him, he can't do that - yet.

Anyway, does anyone have brand, store or type recommendations? It's so hard to tell online what might be cheesy etc. I don't want something that is going to fall apart in 6 months or tip over while they are playing on it. I'm looking at spending around $100.

Calico,

I purchased my cat condo at Big Lots in Phillipsburg. Great price just under $100.00. Cat condo has multi levels. It is easy in and out and no shipping charge.

The top level is at window height so my guys can watch the "happenings" in the neighborhood.

Dec '15

Wayfair.com. Cool selection and the ones I've gotten I've been happy with. They do sell all different manufacturers, but they're probably all made in the same factory in China though, anyway!

I've actually purchased quite a few cat trees in my day. None have fallen apart. The only reason we change them up is because after a couple years they have been torn to shreds (and barfed on too many times) by their occupants. Even if you try to keep them clean, after a couple years they just look awful. Or wait... maybe that's just because of the number of cats we have! Your cat condo might be fine for a decade.

eBay has a wide selection too, and I've purchased from sellers there. Bang for buck is great, but just sifting through the thousands of listings can be overwhelming. So now I just use Wayfair.

I'm sad to report there has not been much activity in/on the cat tree/condo yet. Lydia and Oliver seem petrified of it. Sabrina sat on it for a few minutes and played with the dangling rope, but that's about it. Hopefully it will catch on in time.

Calico696 Calico696
Dec '15

Perhaps if you sprinkle some catnip or treats atop the cat tree/condo, the cats will come around. Our cat bonded to her condo with the aid of spray catnip, but that was a very long time ago.

Courtney
Dec '15

Thanks Courtney. I actually sprayed it with the catnip spray last night. I have also put some of their toys on a couple different levels. I think they just need some time to get used to it.

Courtney
Dec '15

Calico - hopefully they are at least enjoying the box it came in, in the mean time, lol. Our cats enjoy our small cat condo to look out the window and watch the birds. Mom will feed the bird to "turn on" the cat tv. So if it's near a window putting some food out for the birds may help.

Lynnada Lynnada
Dec '15

That's exactly what I do, Lynnada! Keeps them busy throughout the winter. Is your condo at a window, Calico?

If all else fails, you could resort to getting a couple rowdy German Shepherds. They'll be in their tree in no time.

@Sugar - Santa Claws must be blissfully unawares when it comes to your behavior.

Rebecka Rebecka

Calling all cats and cat lovers! There is a serious cat hoarding issue going on next door to me and I need your help. I'm so tired, have been trying to get help for these cats since May and no one's listening to me or helping. They're suffering. Maybe some of you might have better luck finding someone to help them. I'm at my wits end. This isn't in Hackettstown, it's in Belvidere. (I'm sorry...we don't have a forum.) If you're interested, e-mail me and I'll give you all the details, who, where, what, etc. The authorities aren't doing anything. But maybe if more people besides me call, they will do something. I think my one voice by itself is too quiet. Thank you for reading.

deeply concerned deeply concerned
Dec '15

Hi Deeply Concerned.Have you tried called NJ ASPCA or Common Sense for Animals. I'm so sorry you are witnessing this alone. The Barn Yard rescue has cats but I think are more focused on farm animals. Please keep calling the animal control and maybe take some photos for evidence. Also contact a local paper like Warren Reporter to see if they will run a story. Last resort call a local tv station and see if they will investigate and give more light to this distressing situation. I live in a complex full of feral and unwanted cats. So I really do empathize with you.

Natari Natari
Dec '15

If you have already tried NJSPCA and your local ACO, have you also tried police dept? Have you tried some of the bigger organizations, HSUS, Alley cat Rescue, Best Friends network? Even St Huberts may at least be able to give you some advice and contact info. I have been working with stray and feral cats for 22 years, and it is heartbreaking and frustrating. God bless you for caring.

Re: HackCATStownLife

Rebecka - What's "sleepytime" when it's dark all day long in Iceland? It's broadcast 24 hrs and I saw them sleeping with the lights on so I'm not sure why it would be dark. Right now they're in the middle of the day and someone's playing with them. Very active. And very funny.

It's a very standard YouTube live cam. Each of the 3 cameras has its own YouTube page. If you can't see the other one, try this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NUQUMT_jsE

Ok now I can see them! That is the cutest live cam I've ever seen. The kitty house designed for them is awesome.

How much collective time are we humans going to spend watching the kittens play, though? It's part of the larger plot by cats to take over the world. I'm sure of it.

It's a perfect day to Keep Up with the Kattarshians!! There's a whole new season. Now we've got Hekla, Katla, Vigdís, Bubbi, and Þór. What a great day in HackCATStown!!

I was hoping the kitty parents of HackCATStown life could help me out... I'm kitty sitting for my neighbors and one of the sweet baby girls needs to take a pill everyday.

They showed me how they do, but she's not having it with me. I've had success hiding it in her food that I could get her to lick off my fingers, but as of this morning she got wise to my trick. I've googled how to give a cat a pill and she hides well enough that I can't pick her up. She licks the food off my fingers while she is hiding in her tunnel or under their bed.

I can't just hide it in her food dish as her sister may get the pill and not her...

Doggiemomma isn't used to the kitty smarts! I can hide my dogs pills in anything and it goes down in a gulp. I'm sure White Shoes will have a comment on that!

Any suggestions on something I can hide the pill in that would potentially be irresistible???

dadogmomma dadogmomma
Mar '17

I don't know of any delicious substance that will hide a pill from a cat. They make a syringe-type pill-giver thing for cats. You might need something like that. I got mine at my vet.

Rebecka Rebecka
Mar '17

Ever try giving a 22 lb cat a pill that they didn't want??

Clearly no cat misses a pill in their food. Even if they eat it by accident it gets spit out immediately. For sure the pill gun is the only thing that's even close to effective. After you pull the trigger on it, you tickle their throat to get them to swallow. I know, I had to do that with Tigger. And he was a big boy who most certainly was IN CONTROL!! I needed patience, but the pill gun would work so long as he eventually opened his mouth. He tried not to but you have to wait it until until the need to breath takes over. ;-)

This method has always worked for me (don't listen, White Shoes):
Casually pick up kitty, wrap her in a towel so her paws can't fight you, open her mouth and place pill down as far as you can. Quickly close her mouth, and gently blow in her face. This forces her to swallow. Of course, you need to have pill & towel ready & hidden out of sight before "luring" her in. Good luck.

https://youtu.be/yTFfsRtHgCE - a read aloud of how to pill a cat

4catmom 4catmom
Mar '17

Be sure to give the kitty a little syringe of water right after the pill. This ensures that the pill is not stuck in his/her esophagus and will prevent accidentally choking on it.

You can also see if a liquid version of the medication is available if giving the pill is virtually impossible.

Just try to be patient – it's not an easy task with most kitties!

Jules Jules
Mar '17

We use Greenies pill pockets for cats. Pop that bad boy in close and my kitty gobbles it up.

Tidy
Mar '17

4catmom - So true.

You can try hiding it in baby food, any meat variety (chicken, turkey, beef, etc) check the label, make sure it's just meat and water. Cats usually really like it. You can try crushing the pill up and mixing it with a teaspoon or 2 of baby food. Pill pockets work sometimes too. You have to change it up, since cats are smart and don't like taking pills. Lol.

When Nadine and Romeo were alive, Nadine was a sniff alert pill detector. When they both had to take the same pill, Nadine would go over give the food a quick sniff and then alert Romeo by burying the food. Of course, then neither of them would touch it. Thankfully, Romeo was smart enough, that whenever we had to give him a pill, he came to realize, we wouldn't leave him alone until he took it. He would usually just swallow it, even if I didn't get it far back in his mouth. For Nadine, we needed the pill gun along with heavy clothing and winter gloves as armor.

Thank you all for the help! I'm still using the "put some food" on my fingers method but I've been mixing it up with what I use - over the weekend it was tiny hot dog bits lol. I'm kind of surprised it worked, but I was able to smoosh the pill into it to hide it enough I guess. She only needs to take 1/4th of the pill twice a day so it helps that it's tiny.

Her family returns tomorrow night, but since they say it's even difficult for them to get her to take it, I'm feeling pretty good about my success rate so far.

Here is the pretty girl pill taker...

And I am Paige, stealth kitty. Normally when my parents go away and they ask the crazy dog lady to kitty sit me I hide as much as possible.

But I decided to give her a chance and let her do my bidding (aka pet me). At least those silly dogs trained her to pet well... she gives good ear scritches so I guess she's not all bad.

******* Special Weather Statement for HackCATStown NJ *******

The Kitty Weather Service in Mt Hairball NJ has determined due to strong sunlight and pleasantly furry conditions, there is a 95% chance of dangerously cute napping, dozing off, and outright sleep. High expectations of snoring, REM alpha waves, and dreaming.

Due to the dangerous conditions, the KWS has no other alternative than to make an official declaration of SNOOZEFEST!!! Act accordingly.

Went out to dinner and had a huge shrimp cocktail that I could not finish. Brought home two jumbos, chopped them up and gave them to the cat. With a shivering tail, she vigorously ate them up. But it was a big mistake, since she stopped eating her regular food for two days, holding out for more shrimp.

My voracious shrimp lover is almost as excited about Bumble Bee chunk light tuna in water. So I stocked up before the storm, it being available everywhere, even 7-11. But only straight from the can...she won't eat the tuna salad I make for myself with celery, onions and mayo. Fine, we'll share tuna in our different ways..

DannyC DannyC
Mar '17

DannyC - Never try to feed cats onions, garlic, chives, scallions, leeks, etc. All those bulbs are poison to a cat. I'm not positive but I think they're poisonous to dogs too.

GC - No wonder she would not touch my tuna salad with those poisonous onions. No problem with basic tuna, right?

DannyC DannyC
Mar '17

If there was a problem with just plain tuna from a can, Sugar & White Shoes would never ever call my mom "Grandma Tuna". It's a treat though, otherwise they wouldn't have a very balanced diet. They get a combo of dry & different types of wet - tuna, liver, chicken, and special "Spot's Lamb Stew". (Halo brand)

GC - Fed her Purina Cat Chow Complete, which she thrived on for two years until she discovered shrimp, and now tuna. So now must mix it up to keep her happy and get her to stop begging and crying for what she craves. Love this little beast. Any specific brands and portion recommendations are most welcome.

Re: HackCATStownLife

Uh oh, just heard the forecat -

The Kitty Weather Service in Mount Hairball NJ has issued a Buzzard Warning, which is in effect from 8 PM this evening to 6 PM EDT Tuesday.

The Winter Storm Warning is no longer in effect and not even the half of it!!

* LOCATIONS...Eastern Pennsylvania and much of northern New Jersey.

* HAZARD TYPES... Low flying birds of prey and unnatural airborne waste bombs.

* ACCUMULATIONS... Flocking possible. Avoid dangerous crowds, corner and attack lone birds as a group, then dine individually.

* IMPACTS...Higher than normal chances of dirty windshields and bad hair days.

Poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel unless in case of bluefin sighting. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. Tuna, dog mace, ball of string. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle and have a human take any risks.

Sugar Sugar
Mar '17

DannyC - Ask your vet for portions based on age and activity. The Purina I give mine is the indoor one with hairball control and lower calories. Canned food as I mentioned is Halo brand, available from Hackettstown Pet.

GC - Thanks. For now, it's Purina Cat Chow Complete, sometimes topped with Bumble Bee chunk light tuna in water. She seems to be happy with this. Will try all your other suggestions after the storm. She has an appointment with the vet on the 20th, being only a bit over two years old, and needing booster immunization shots anyway. Thanks again.

I started feeding a stray cat before winter and a couple of weeks ago noticed her belly getting big so I trapped her and brought her in the house.
A week later she gave birth to 4 Beautiful kittens! Approximately 5 days after that someone found 2 kittens in a garbage bag at the landfill! They were still alive with their umbilical cords on; I took them and introduced them to Lily (momma cat) and she nursed them back to health and they are doing amazing :-). Then...... The next morning a kitten was found at a construction site with the umbilical cord on no other kittens and no mother ( apparently someone was trapping the cats and they believe trapped the mother ) After checking with my vet, I introduced that kitten to Lily and now she is nursing all of the kittens and they are all doing excellent!

Re: HackCATStownLife

This just in from Mt Hairball:

The Kitty Weather Service in Mount Hairball NJ has issued a Dangerous Weather Warning, which is in effect from December 3rd to December 25th.

This warning replaces all previous watches and advisories.

* LOCATIONS...Eastern Pennsylvania and much of northern New Jersey.

* HAZARD TYPES... Ridiculous blinding light flashes, broken bulb bits, tinsel choking hazards, and inflatable disasters. Approach holiday decorations with extreme caution. Assume all baubles and flashing lights are devil spawn.

* ACCUMULATIONS... Due to on going hooman OCD, massive rocket displays, piped in holiday music extravaganzas, and sky high electric bills have been known to happen.

* IMPACTS...Higher than normal chances of kitty kat alcoholism, hair standing on end, and long cat whisperer therapy sessions.

Poor holiday attitudes are likely leading to a run on local watering holes and barroom clashes. Flashing lights likely to cause menacing migraines and serious seizures. Pounce, floor, and shred all tree based products immediately. Presume hoomans will thank us later for assuring their species survival.

Mt Hairball Alert! Mt Hairball Alert!! :

**** LA BAMBA GENESIS ****

The Kitty Weather Service in Mount Hairball NJ has issued a Dangerous Dance Warning, which is in effect from January 4th to January 5th.

This warning replaces all previous watches and advisories.

* LOCATIONS...Eastern Pennsylvania and much of northern New Jersey.

* HAZARD TYPES... Spontaneous dance marathons, overt playing of Ritchie Valens songs, and shameless paid appearances by Lou Diamond Phillips

* ACCUMULATIONS... Potential vinyl garbage piles and emergency rooms filled with charlie horse cases

* IMPACTS... Unbridled stereo playing, carpet burns, and a false sense of falsetto possible. Clear all areas of dance contestants and 45 records immediately on sight.

A rare phenomenon of the re-birth of a classic late 50's tune causing severe health risks including headaches, sore ears, and delusions of dancing. Approaching any hooman singing with extreme caution. This rare birth of song is referred to by it's technical name "La Bomba Genesis".

Bad hair day, but a good day for hockey. Anyone else wanna go out and play?

Barny - You're supposed to get adopted by a family of four. Not eat them.

looking for advice - in a few months I will be moving (temporary) into a friends house to care for it and a cat, while he is deployed.
I have 3 male cats age 7 & 9 - his cat is a female age 2 - all are neutered or spaded

I have started to bring a blanket with my cats smells on it over to the house and his cat just smells it and walks away - my cats smell it and lay on it, no different than what they normally do. And I think I will do this until we move in - July ish

my questions come down to HOW do I handle it all when we do move it? bring my litter boxes and just combine with hers? All new litter boxes?

do you think it would be ok for me to lock her in a room, in the beginning and let my boys run the house and then reverse?
I would only let them been together in the beginning while I am home, that is my plan.

ANY thoughts would be great on how to get them to "like each other OR just get along" as it would be for 8-9 months.

We have to make it work as he will deploy no matter how they get along.

Thank you

Wendy

Definitely start with first putting your boys in one area or room first -- not her. If you put her in the room, she will think the other cats are in her space and taking over, and they locked her up! If the newcomers are in one area, she will know they are there and hopefully be curious to welcome new friends (and will for sure spend a lot of time by the door, sniffing). As she is the female, you have a good chance of all the boys respecting her. She will likely be the one to lay down the law; most boys won't fight a female (at least from what I've read). You might be able to just do the separation for a day or two, as well. A week might not be needed. My humble prediction is that it will all go very smoothly. Then again... cats! ;-)

Thanks Rebecka,

Re: HackCATStownLife

Oh no! New brothers!!

I agree COMPLETELY!! If it's my home, it's my home! Let the other kitties by themselves first. Absolutely everything in their room - food and litter boxes. When I get around to it and investigate and tell my human it's OK, then they can come out for a while.

Well maybe. ;-)

Unless if I like them, then never mind. Then they can come out and we all have a big paw-tay.

As Rebecka said, boys should be locked up. If possible after a few dto let them see each other through a screen or gate it would be good. I’d keep the old litter boxes and litter they usual us for all including your friends cat. They are very particular about that and may not like the change and potty elsewhere. They like their smells on the old box, it’s a territorial thing.
Good luck.

One other thing I just thought of, Wendy: Bach's Rescue Remedy for pets. It's a homeopathic calming liquid you give to stressed animals. Just a few drops works miracles. I don't understand how it works -- I don't even "believe in" homeopathy. And yet I've seen it with my own eyes. I discovered it when I was helping to rehab injured wildlife. It can take an animal from angry to chill in minutes. Might be good to have on hand. (And if all else fails maybe just get the drops for humans and take them yourself lol.)

Re: HackCATStownLife

I've been getting closer and closer to a feral cat who showed up looking for food on our farm over the winter. I was so happy yesterday when she took treats right from my hand. Less happy this evening though, when I came out on the patio just now to enjoy my leftovers from last night's special dinner at Ryland Inn. Darn cat just helped herself to every last bit of the leftover halibut. It was freakin delicious, too. I imagine the level of cuisine was lost on this scruffy forest feline. >\

Phew... I'm up against a deadline here working for daddy. I've been working like crazy getting all of my projects done so I can wait up for our visit from Sandy Paws. I just hope I can make it in time. Anyone else do Objective C phone apps and Struts with an emphasis on MVC paradigms?? Just jump right on in if you do...

In any case, back to hunkering down while I warm my butt.

Re: HackCATStownLife

How many hours of daddy's coding/ programming did you erase with your tail there, WS?! And why do cats get rewarded for naughty behavior?

My bro and sis: they are not even supposed to be in the kitchen and *definitely* not on the table it's a feliny. And they are getting treat of milk on the kitchen table! And I want some milk too an I cannot jump that high.

And Sugarplum I bet got tuna from Santypaws? And does she not have worse case of cattitude in recorded history? I cannot figure anything out I'm so confused with cats. Help.

Re: HackCATStownLife

For your information Mr Nedi-pot, my sister is an excellent coder. And if anything was erased, it would have been her own work. So she wasn't being naughty at all.

Sandypaws was just fantastic this year!! We had some nice lamb stew for our Tunamas meal, with a healthy dose of tuna before AND after!! We each gotz a fluffy animal from Grandma Tuna. She says she thinks the one looks just like YOU!! She may be right because White Shoes tried to scratch its eyes out. I bit into it and I think it's full of bolonka.

Did you ever think the katz getz rewardz because they're the best!! No wonder you're confused poochie - you need training!!

I gotz a great gift from Grandma for Tunamas. It's a pet doggie! I'm claiming him for me and giving the silly bear to White Shoes.

I am naming him "Fred". He's a Blushin' Radonka breed.

He smells! First up is a LONG LONG bath. With lots of scrubbing!

Good advice for ANY dog owner!! ;-)
