Bicycles + Hackettstown = Awesome

Bicycles + Hackettstown = AwesomeI admit it I'm a bicycle voyeur. I admire all cyclists. I recently moved to Hackettstown and am finding the town very bike friendly. I love it! Its easy to find byways around trouble spots. Plus were in a valley, no huge hills! I can leave my evil car sitting in the driveway for all around town trips, just need a bike trailer for heavier bulky items.
Heres a list of some interpid folks I've seen out enjoying the air, exercise, freedom etc....

Lady cruising out of a turn past me walking goes "beep beep" at me, I'm surprised at the childish beep beep til I see a little kid on a child seat mounted behind her.
Old dude in his 70's? cruising FAST along waterloo rd. helmetless with white hair flowing backwards
Looked out my home window and saw a strong looking dude riding a handcycle!
Middle aged dude with Team Discovery jersey going really slow down Waterloo Rd. sitting bolt upright looking terrifed as a car passed him.
Patient confident lady in street clothes & helmet waiting to cross Main St.
A guy pedaling with 3 or 4 of those small cooler bags wrapped around his torso riding while holding a plastic bag.
Middle aged chick riding a really big gear slow up a hill in a fleece in 80 degree weather. I wonder if she'll stick with cycling. I passed her spinning in a small gear to hint.
Fully loaded (more than just a day trip) touring cyclist passed through Main St. H-town as Ann & I ate lunch on the sidewalk. He was going far away.
A guy 'recycling' some curbside stereo speakers, towing them on a hand truck behind his bike - not bad!
Went out mt. biking and passed some kids pulling another kid in a radio flyer attached to their bikes, they were falling all over the place, when I got back, they had it down.
Out my living room window caught a smart dad teaching his kid to use hand signals while making a left turn.

Keep it up!

Re: Bicycles + Hackettstown = AwesomeWent last October and loved it! It's interesting that Holland has the lowest incidence of mental illness, or at least they are rated the happiest people. Maybe it's all that cycling?

Makes me feel a bit guilty that I haven't had my bike out yet this year. But I gotta tell ya that getting out of the bottom of the Trail where I live requires a few more gears than me or my bike has.

Deansangie,
I just started riding my bike to work. There really isn't much room to rideon the road on high traffic street like Grand ave and Main St. some areas you have to use the sidewalks witch are alittle small even smaller when there are trash cans out. I found it better to ride through the developments to get to where I need to go. The only thing you have to watch out for are Dogs that are running free and these drivers that are on their Cell Phone speeding on through. I have actually seen more people smokeing and talking on their cell phone while driving then I realized were doing it.

So becarefull out there. Happy pedaling

Re: Bicycles + Hackettstown = AwesomeDolly, I really wanna go, nice pic. The architecture looks great there. I think theres alot to be said about how our 'built' world affects our mood.
You must have an older model bike maybe or perhaps a race bike? Its kind of a pain to add lower gearing, it can get complicated / expensive but have Martys take a look, it could be easy. You do have some big hills outta there. I have some REALLY low gears to tackle the crazy NJ hills.

CJ, Awesome, I'm very jealous of you. I have a 25mile drive to work. I park my car about 10 miles out and bike the last part of the route.
It sounds like your doing great! I cant recommend this site www.bicyclesafe.com enough. It has completely informed my street riding. It talks about sidewalks, shoulders, general sharing the road issues.

I still have'nt seen the unicyclist I've hard about!

Dolly -

They just rebroadcast that "happiest country" bit on 60 minutes. That's Denmark that's the happiest, not Holland - and they tried to explain it as having low expectations. (maybe the mention of Copenhagen was the confusion?)

Holland is so flat it's a great place for bikes, but then most of Denmark is the same way. Yet, despite the web site in Copenhagen that was posted, it's not the bike crazy city Amsterdam is. Everywhere you go in Amsterdam it's just hundreds and hundreds of beat up dented 3 speeds all piled on top of each other. Sure there are bikes and cyclists in Copenhagen, but you don't see hundreds at a time like in Amsterdam.

Jan

Oh yeah GC. I have that that Holland/Denmark problem since 5th grade. If they start making a pill for that, I'd take it!

I bought my bike at the old bike shop that use to be on Main Street. It's got 21 gears and with the right rider can climb stairs. So the problem isn't the bike making it up the hairpin on the trail, it's the rider. But I've been thinking that since I go to the gym and workout and then do a cardio thing there, maybe I should just ride my bike to the gym. I'd save 50 cents worth of gas and be in better shape!

Thanks Ike!

It would make a great warm up for the gym too! I love hills ( i used to hate em)!!!
But ya know I'd imagine starting the ride off with a big climb would be tough! I think climbing is very mental...When you can pedal on flat ground nearly effortlessly, hitting hills that slow you down to walking speed is kinda demoralizing. Some things I've learned - - Use that lowest gear you've got and just spin up hills using a high cadence, I shoot for 80-100 rpm. Dont Worry about going slow, Be Happy!, the high cadence will keep your leg muscles fresh but it will tax your breathing (your lungs recover way quicker than your legs)...If your breathing gets outta control and your eyeballs start popping out, just slow it down a notch. If your legs get tired, spin faster. Ideally you wanna find the right cadence that does'nt kill your legs or your lungs and kind of balances out the effort. Break the climb up into manageable chunks in your mind...Pick different points, ride to that sign, then the pole, the driveway up there. Keep your upper body, neck, shoulders, really relaxed, look around & have fun.
And.... www.bicyclesafe.com :)

I towed some little duckies to safety along rt. 57. Left the pool on bike to head to Shop Rite for some groceries. I get on 57 and see two young scared looking bikers on walmart bikes stopped wondering what happened to the safety of the shoulder. The shoulder rudely disappears into a right turn only lane for Home Depot. No sidewalk. They're stuck. Normally this is a tough spot for me too, I take the far far left of the right turning lane and continue straight through that light depending on my visibility to keep my safe. They did'nt speak English so I kinda pointed at my back wheel, like 'hey, hop on, follow my line, we dont need not stinking sidewalks anyhow" So they did! They followed past all the other driveways and crazy shoppers in & out of the parking lots. It was kinda fun. Steady 8mph or so! I felt safer too, 3 cyclists are more visible than 1. They continued up Allen and I headed into the Shop Rite. That was my good deed for the year.

Last night the sun set so fast it really felt like fall. Anyway, I rode and did some shopping on Main St., coming back home I saw a fellow cyclist doing a shakey tracks stand at 517/46 light. It was nice to see a fellow biker with his lights blazing. It made me feel safer and less crazy for riding in the dark. I was in traffic so I only had a chance to give him a 'whoop whoop' as I rode by.

Riding home from the train yesterday, spotted another cyclist coming through Hackettstown! woohoo! Man he had funny sporty sunglasses on. Looked like he was exercising hard down Main Street.

Later in the night I rode by some ladies doing speed walking laps around the tennis courts near the high school. In the dark. what the heck? Are there no better spots in that neighborhood to walk & talk? Very very strange, nice ambience in the courts? I thought maybe they were locked in there?

I get funny looks & funny questions/comments when people find out I like to bike alot. They're simple questions but I usually try to convince them that cycling is awesome and get way too deep into it and end up sounding a little crazy and I get a funny look. So I think I'm a little too emotionally involved, I feel the need to always defend and endorse cycling. I made myself a list of easy responses to typical questions/comments.

Stuff like:
- Boy you must have alot of free time to ride that thing.
Yeah, it really cuts into my tv time.

- Are'nt you scared of cars?
Yes

- Should'nt you ride against traffic instead of with it?
You try that crap going 20+mph

-What are you manorexic?
No, I likely eat more than you.

- Man those bike seats hurt my butt
You dont pedal hard enough wuss.

- Why not just drive?
I see god on every ride.

- Thats great your being green
Yes I'm fueled by whiskey, not oil.

-Dont you sweat alot?
No, never ever.

-You wear a helmet?
Yes, I've given comas some thought

-Why dont you ride on the sidewalk?
Where do I ride when the sidewalk ends?

- I wish I could ride to work.
Could you ride to the grocery store or perhaps your grandmas house?

- I just wanna ride around, what kinda bike should I buy?
Start with a $300 mountain bike from a friendly bike shop close to your house.

- I used to love to ride.
If you loved it then, you'd love it now.

All day I had seen the fast bike guy with white hair riding helmetless through the neighborhood. I even drove by him a couple towns over and wanted be him on this fine autumn day. I had time to kill late Sunday and some errands to run so I got psyched up to ride. I rode past some bmx dudes who did'nt heckle me all helmeted and signaling left on my way to the park. A couple blocks away is a park that sits on old fish farm land, so there is lots of water and grass to ride around, all next to the river. Very scenic, today lots of dog walkers, duck feeders, leaf peepers, joggers, and a not so intense pick up volleyball game, they really seemed to be carrying the ball on every 'hit', my friends and I would'nt put up with those moves if we were playing. In the open field next to the river a crazy squirrel crossed right the heck between my tires for no good reason, I was surprised he made it out fine, and I guess he was too because he ran over to the side and looked me right in the eye and did a celebratory front flip, little daredevil. Leaving that park, there is a well groomed wide trail that goes maybe half mile into another park, took a muddy corner a little fast and fishtailed a bit and reached the old bridge crossing long since washed out. There were 2 kayakers, maybe wondering how to get around the crappy bridge and a girl reading a book on the bench overlooking the scene. Crossing the river here would get me to Blockbuster Video pretty quick, during the summer I could walk across the crap bridge with bike on my shoulder to the other side of the river, but with the recent rain, no way. So out to the main road. Passed a guy on a longboard skateboard. The guy has gotta be over 35, and riding a longboard, a sure sign that the world aint that bad. Made it to Blockbuster taking the lane when the highway gets shoulderless. Picked out the new Indiana Jones to try to continue the adventure. Next stop is the grocery store. Some nasty roads between here and there but not for me. Took the back way through the condos and out through the cemetery. Made the easy climb up to Tillie Smiths grave since its a great view, and the light is fading fast making for a slighly spooky time. Nice! In the calm quiet neighborhood streets I yelled out 'boo' to a guy who was adorning his yard with halloween decorations. I know I did'nt scare him but I hope he did'nt think I was being a jerk, I was just being a nerd. No problems biking the unfriendly to the non-motoring public road (such a shame; the shopping center I'm heading to is surrounded by hundreds of homes, if anyone tried walking from their homes to the shopping, they'd likely be scared to death) Front door parking at the shopping center like always, sweet. Had to beg the checkout gal to keep filling my shopping bag and not use those pesky plastic bags, I explain I need one bag to throw into my shopping bag pannier mounted on my bike while shes looking at me like I'm a dork, so I fill my own bag and giver her her plastic ones back. Back on the bike, rolling home, man this bike handles well with nearly 30lbs of groceries. Get to an intersection at the shopping center and stare at a red barn in a farm field still holding on for dear life between strip malls. Switch on the lights and take the easy way home through the little sidewalk to the high school avoiding a minor hill. Passed 2 more bmx dudes, twins actually, with little white boy afro hair. They actually stopped at a stop sign, respecting my right of way through the intersection. Nice! Made it home no problem. Man that was a nice relaxing ride.

Sunday I went for a quick 75 minute or so ride up into the hills around the northwest side of h-town. Its been a long time since I've ridden alone and with no destination, just exploring. Chilly windy day, headwinds only for a bit and got some good pushes up some hills, thats a great feeling, that free speed. The countryside of course was wonderful up on the roads wayyyyy less traveled. I smell burning wood, it smells old. The bike disappears under me and its easy to pretend I'm in another time, maybe 2 centuries earlier when I see the old lonely red doored hilltop church lovingly constructed from fieldstone and simple rustic yet stately farmhouses surrounded by worm fence. A cluster of old buildings, a few homes and a mill, a town! Rugged subsistence farmer type folks homesteading in a land still inhabited by rogue Indian tribes and mountain lions. The open farm fields are safe feeling but whats lurking out in the woods? The fact that almost no cars are out on these roads helps keep me in this mindset nearly the whole ride, only being rudely interrupted by a couple of noisey leaf blowers. Big climbing but generally pretty gradual...great view of the ridge that Jenny Jump State Park sits on (I dunno the proper name for it) and some more climbing to a Water Gap view! Long downhill back into town and this ride is over way too soon. Got some Rico Pan & big can o' beer on the way home.

For the past six years on my drive to work I pass an older man on a bike at least twice a week (until it gets too cold or there's snow on the ground). Passed him today. In the early years he'd be trudging along in his corduroys with a pained look on his face. Now he's out there in his biking gear flying along! I always get a smile when I see him and miss him when he's not there.

Why have'nt you been riding Alex?

I just got the bottom bracket in, man those cartridge ones are easy. Went out for a quick errand, bike rides well.

This trike fits 4 kids; http://www.dutchbikefactory.com/pages_eng/cargo.htm

Could you imagine the looks youd get riding that around h-town? Carting the kids down the road to play or shop!!

That was really really fun. Cant remember the last time I drew in chalk, hit a baseball and jumped a fence. Goofy fun! I love it!
