Free Trip- Anywhere in the World

If you were given a free trip to the place of your choice..expense free...where would you choose to go?
I would pick Ireland.

joyful joyful
Jun '11

Great question joyful! Good choice too- I was fortunate enough to visit Ireland last year and just fell in love. I would go back again in a heartbeat.

I would have to choose Fiji. I have always wanted to go there and then from there I could visit New Zealand (I am willing to take on that expense myself if I had an all-expenses paid to Fiji... strategy!)

get a fully loaded rv, hire a driver to take me and my family cross county, hitting every state, in the usa.. so much to see .. all expenses paid, no time limits, i would choose to do that :)

Jun '11

katievits24 - Take the trip to New Zealand, you can get the flight routed through Nadi. Then the expenses in Fiji will be far less than the $ spent in NZ. Work it out right, and you should even be able to go via Fiji in one direction, and through Samoa in the other. You need to go to the outer islands if you're going to get away from the modernization. I might choose Tonga because it's not so built up - it's still fairly off the beaten track. You can be right in the capital and do everything while you feel like time traveling 50 years ago.

As for me I would love to go back to Ireland, joyful. But if it were me, I wouldn't choose places like Europe or the South Pacific that I've already done a lot of. We had just been talking about Mongolia a couple of Sunday's ago. That with a stop over in Beijing for some time in northern China.

Rebecka - for a nature lover that sounds like a natural choice. ;-)

darluggh - Good for you. There are so many places here in the US that people forget to explore their own back yard. It's also so easy these days to hop on a plane and grab a rental and not really see a place. I was so fortunate as a kid to have the whole family go coast to coast camping like that - two summers in a row.

Australia...............where its warm on their beach!

With all of the interest here in our own country, maybe we should also include where you would want to go if you got a week's vacation anywhere here in the US?

I'd find that exceptionally tough to do. I have only four states left to go. Should I visit three of them and visit my cousin in New Orleans via Alabama and Mississippi?? Or Alaska if we're not limited to the lower 48? Or even though Arches is my all time favorite place, the one I want to go back to most is Idaho and raft on the Snake River. All things considered, I think I'd choose Alaska at the moment.

I ahve always wanted to go to the Grand Canyon and take a helicopter ride to see it........that would make me very happy!

Always wanted to go to Tahiti and wear a sarong........but as a kid one of my teachers taught us about the Galapagos....so that would be on my list too, so this is a hard question, I am discovering!!!!

We were in Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania in April-NZ is possibly the most beautiful country I have ever seen!

Caged - My Uncle married a lady from Maidstone in Kent. So that means being able to use that as a base for places like Dover & Canterbury. My aunt passed away some years ago but my uncle still lives in Kent and occasionally visits here in the US every other year or so.

When I was 27, I made a list of places I wanted to visit. I finished the list of places by visiting the Galapagos last month. I am now coming up with my second. Thought I would share... because when I posted "Galapagos" on this thread, I then got my free trip. (HL Gods, are you reading this?!)

jean09 - Fiji is beautiful, I don't want to talk you out of it. But if you want the over the water thing, you should go to French Polynesia. (Bora Bora or Moorea)

Rebecka - From a naturalist point of view I think Madagascar would be a perfect place for you to get to. PNG might be very rewarding, but it's a very tough place. The Solomons are quite similar in both ways although it wasn't always unsafe. I think Palau would be better for you than the Marshalls, and if you're interested in Kiribati, you should be interested in Tuvalu as well. I had a thought if it's bird watching you want to do in that area - you should try to latch on to some people with Fish & Wildlife. They do expeditions to the outter islands, ones that are starting to disappear like ones in Kiribati are. I forget which island it is, but one is now only above water 20% of the day time at lowest tide.

I'm sticking with my last year's choice of Mongolia. I want Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, or Ladakh yes. But Mongolia I know I would come back from.

A client of mine recently gave a flowing recommendation for Tunisia. Quite a bit easier to arrange than Mongolia. Perhaps that's what I'll do in real life instead of waiting for the HL Lottery to get my free trip. ;-)

Rebecka...When my first husband worked for the Government we flew to Hawaii and then he went over to the Marshall Islands for business. He said you could walk around that whole Island in a day. I stayed in Hawaii and still want to go back there again too if I can manage it. I visited Ireland only one time (My Mom was pure Irish) and all I can say is it felt like "coming home"...I really would like to do that again before I leave this world too.

Re: Free Trip- Anywhere in the World

Just thought I would bump this up there, so we can all dream a bit (or add to our dreams).

And I also wanted to share an image I just finished processing, because I kind of like the way it came out.

I took this in a place that is beloved among birders and bird photographers - Bosque del Apache New Mexico. If you're fascinated with birds - put it on your to do list!! If you're not wildly passionate about our avian friends, trust me, there is *nothing* else to do there - avoid!

Bessie - I've looked at that a couple of times but not lately. A leaky ger is not a good thing. Mongolia is probably higher on my list because I don't intend to live there, just visit.

Joyful - Sure, if we're going there, we need the Danube Cruise!!

Rebecka - Korcula claims to be the birth place of Marco Polo when it was part of the Venetian colonies. (although there may not be any real proof) It's a must see part of the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. When it comes to the Pacific, just let me know and I'll do what I can. By strange quirk of fate it's actually the Brit ones I know the most about, but I'll tell you what I know. PM when you want to.

Rebecka - For your wildlife, I keep telling you Madagascar is your place. ;-)

For me, of those 10, I actually think Santorini tops Ischia, and actually since we were just talking about it, Ischia looks and is supposed to be a lot like Korcula. I also think #10 Maui is just to make sure America wasn't left out. Any number of South Pacific places out do Maui. But that's just me. ;-)

Wow Rebecka you have such an adventurous spirit! How awesome is that! I do not even know the locations in the world of the places that you want to go to..Nor even heard of some of them...I most def need to get map of the world...New Zealand and Ireland are my hearts desire..

reedfamilyrocks reedfamilyrocks
Jun '12

Madagascar - yes, GC, I agree. It is high up on the list. But because I've been to Africa so many times, it's not on the top. The South Pacific is on the top, I think, at this point. Never been to Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, Palau, Tuvalu...

... when do we leave, again??? ;-)

Also GC - just saw that someone had recommended Tunisia to you. I second that recommendation! It is an amazing, easy, country to visit. You get better Roman ruins than in Italy, and if you drive to the southern tip of the little country, you can take a camel ride into the Sahara.

Reedfamily - I completed my first "list" of 50 places to go in the world, so now the places I long for are pretty remote and... well, way off the beaten track!

Yes, gelato everywhere ianimal. In Spain too. And great coffee. The only thing we would do if we went back to Cinque Terra would be to hit the beach and a few different restaurants.

There was a lot of walking, but I didn't think it was too bad. We also took two boat rides and a train back to our bus when we were done. The lunch we had in Monterossa was unreal. Fresh gnocchi and pesto along with antipasta.

Re: Free Trip- Anywhere in the World

Did you go to Corniglia? I believe it was the third of the 5 in either direction. There seemed to be about a thousand steps (probably closer to 400 in reality) from the train station to the town... one guy decided to make camp halfway up, lol. The limoncello at the top tasted that much sweeter, though.

ianimal ianimal
Jul '12

Now, as for places I've never been... I would like for our next European trip to visit the capital cities along the Danube. Vienna, Austria; Bratislava, Slovakia; Budapest, Hungary; and Belgrade, Serbia.

All I have to do is figure out how I can take a month off of work, lol. Maybe we can skip Belgrade and do it in 3 weeks; those Serbs are kinda scary anyway. (no offense)

As for an American vacation, I would like to drive out to Chicago and pick up Route 66 and drive it (slowly, stopping everywhere) all the way to Los Angeles. That would probably take a couple of weeks, too.

ianimal ianimal
Jul '12

Yes, I think, we hit all five. There were a lot of steps, but most of it was down. Our bus had to stop up top and drop us off at the first town because they had mudslides last year and the road was out.

Barcelona and Mallorca were two of our favorite stops. It was really friggin hot. 102 in Spain at one point.

Definitely want to hit Germany next. I want to drive on the Autobahn. And ski the Alps. Prague would be real nice as well.

MeisterNJ MeisterNJ
Jul '12

Wow, I envy all of you adventurists out there. Having grown up in Canada and lived in three different states in the U.S. I am ashamed to say I have never been to Europe. For Canadians, backpacking in Europe after highschool graduation is a coming of age/right of passage sort of thing. I guess I missed that boat. However, if I could choose just one place to go at this time in my life, I would have to pick Ireland. I hear it is just beautiful.

My other dream vacation when my son is older would be to treck to Everest basecamp. I don't want to climb the mountain; I just want to see it. I read many books that describe the journey there and many say it is half the fun of climbing the mountain. It is also very challenging so I really need to get in shape.

ian - To me Vienna is big and impersonal, urban and boring. So many nicer places around there than the city itself. Bratislava is great. Hungary is on my list, but the places between there and Serbia are supposed to be a long winding trip without a lot of things in between. I've never been, but I've got an open invitation waiting for me in Croatia. If you like the trip, start in Austria, take that small Danube cruise, but end up south in Croatia or Bosnia.

MeisterNJ - Hit the autobahn if you'd like, but if you want to ski Germany isn't a top destination. You could easily fly to Munich, but skip over the border to Innsbruck and the area if you want to ski. Either that or think Switzerland. Compromise is to make your base in Salzburg. Munich is small day trip, you can make Vienna if you like, and grab one of the weekend family train passes to ski Innsbruck. You get those for a family of four, plus one of a dog, bicycles, or skis, all for like half the price of a single rider. Only catch is it's weekend only and no national trains.

My favorite vacation spot - Costa Rica - i look forward to return to the rainforest, black sandy beaches and their warm water springs.

My dream trip would be New Zealand and Austrailia and a trip to the galapagos islands.

Very interesting timing Rebecka. I still would choose Mongolia as a far off, unrealistic destination I would pick with a free ride. But more down to earth choices I managed my trip to Finland & Estonia year before last. And now I'm doing Hungary like I mentioned. This really should be my trip to Croatia & Bosnia but the way things are now, it's just not in the cards. Getting there from Hungary I don't think is much of an issue. Getting back today you hear of so many horror stories of stopped trains and searches and multi-day delays. I really want to combine the trip with going to Poland, but the transportation routes are as easy as I'd like. So I'm not 100% what other countries I will or won't get to. I wish I could find more to do in Slovakia. Or Romania looked more attractive.

I would consider Nigeria if only to meet up with my rich uncle who has been trying to get in touch with me! LOL.

Yes, Old Gent, please try. NZ is, by far, one if the most beautiful countries I have ever seen!
I went to Alaska this past summer so I can cross it off my.list. Next wold be Vietnam, Africa (again), Costa Rica, Hungary.
So many places to see, so little time and money!

Greg - You'll find Nigeria extremely welcoming. Just go and you'll find thousands of your new uncles everyone of which was in the oil business and "shared a last name with you" even if they don't know what your last name is. Stand in as next of kin. Won't be hard at all to do. Just pay all the court fees and you're done. ;-)

Old Gent - My mom has traveled extensively to India and Egypt in her 80+ years. She was the youngest at 76 on her trip to India with 80 & 90 year olds. It's never too late. I was very lucky to have a whole summer off (yeah, that's January and February) to go camping north to south in NZ when I was 14. It's not just the place, the people will really set you back in NZ.

SD - The Tatras are actually kind of the problem. It's not hard to get there, I could see a bit of the one side, but then what? I really want to get to the other side to Poland. That would be ideal for me given places I've bee already. But the transportation that way is not easy. I've heard it described as a really rough mountainous area with little public transportation. I'm considering my options but it's not looking very realistic to go that direction unless I rented a car and did it on my own. That's expensive for a single person.

Rebecka - I'm going to end up there for sure. But it just doesn't look like it's this particular trip. How recently did your brother go there? Within the last 18 mo during the refugee crisis?? Did he cross to the Hungarian border? I'm not worried about going to Croatia or Bosnia either, no safety concerns while there. (although the night train Budapest to Belgrade is a different story) It's the border in the other direction and all of the border camps, the stoppages, and the riots that have me worried. Eventually I know I'll be able to go on a separate trip that does a much easier stint right down the Dalmatian coast. Hopefully Lubljana down through to meet up with the friends in Korcula to Mostar & Sarajevo, Monetenegro and out via Dubrovnik.

I need my fairy godmother to gift me a trip to Rabbit Island (off of Japan).
Also now dying to see NZ, too.

Anyone planning an amazing trip? (I know Iris is!)
