New Eatery on 57
I saw the sign for I think "Mack's" where the short lived cookery shop was across from Shoprite. It says coming soon serving breakfast and lunch. Does anyone got the scoop. Im always looking for super breakfast spots.
htown newbie - That would be great, but not sure that this area could sustain such a business.
Where I grew up (Essex County) not only were all the diners 24 hours so where supermarkets, gas stations, drug stores and convenience stores. I lived one block from the famous Short Stop Diner :) Out here everything shuts down at 11 the latest except the bars. I assume that is because there wouldn't be many patrons.
The lack of public transportation and metered taxis has also been a big adjustment for me.
Anyway, a good breakfast place would be super.
Yes, I would love to see a 24/7 diner too. There are no more in Hackettstown! They were great when I was younger and able to stay up past 11pm. We always stopped on the way home to get some food in us!
i was going to say the same nota we go to buddlake often for late night meals or snacks when we go out
Mack's Place is open! Serving breakfast and lunch starting at 5:30 A.M. Free coffee this week. Located across the street from ShopRite in Mansfield.
Great. Check the menu and its prices. Hopefully, they are somewhat lower than Budd Lake Diner. Also, is there sufficient seating inside?
Calico, never heard of the Short Stop diner... can't be all THAT famous, lol.
My favorite is Top's Diner in Kearny (East Newark, actually). Tick Tock in Clifton and Five Brothers in Little Falls were good when I was hanging out up that way as well. Cheeseburgers at the Lyndhurst Diner, the Happy Waitress at the NA... (North Arlington)... man, I miss that stuff.
If you're ever in Bordentown, check out Mastori's... great cheese bread. Also down that way is the Americana in Hightstown, which is top-notch as well. There are great diners throughout most of NJ, just not in Warren County...
I loved the 24 hour diners. Always the last stop after a night out at the clubs when we were young. ianimal, finished every fri or sat night at either arlington, lyndhurst or tops diners. I do also remember the short stop, they served your eggs right in the skillet, no plate just brought you the skillet to eat your breakfast from. It was very well known in that area at that time.
Tops and Tick Tock are my favorites as well. Also a fan of Five Brothers, used to go there all the time while in college. They all have liquor licenses :)
The Short Stop Diner was a 12-15 stool diner, no tables or booths. Located on the service road for the GSP's exit 148 ramps. They made an awesome California burger and served their eggs right in the skillet. Now it's a Dunkin' Donuts :(
My wife's and my first official date started at "Doc's" at the Totowa Holiday Inn and we ended up sharing a plate of nachos at Tops Diner afterwards... they always had the best nachos: fully loaded and the chips stayed crispy.
That, and the "Hungryman" open-faced hot roast beef and cheese with gravy on a hard roll (with disco fries, of course) were my favorite dishes at Tops... now, I'm beginning to drool. I almost want to make an excuse to go visit the in-laws, lol.
I remember the Short Stop Diner off the parkway in Bloomfield. Grew up in that town. My husband and his buddies use to hang out there once in awhile. I think they only had about 8-10 stools at the counter and that was it. Your right Calico696, they cooked the eggs right in a small skillet and you ate right out of it. No dirty plates for them to wash.
The place was small. If my memory serves me right, you couldn't get more than a dozen people in it at one time.
Paul - Can you elaborate? What did you order and what was the price? Can you also give a short description of what is on the menu? Thanks.
Mack's is right next door to us
Here is a sampling of the menu
Omelets $4.25-$5.25
Pancakes/French Toast $3.75 with meat $5.75
Egg Sandwiches $2.25-$3.75
Oatmeal, Biscuits & Gravy, Bagels
Lunch
Cold & Hot Sandwiches, Burgers, Wings, Mozz Sticks
Hope that helps or makes you hungry!!!
L&J - Are the omelets served with hash browns/home fries and toast? If so that is a great deal!
Tops Diner is the best! Used to go all the time when I was in college. I now work in Nutley so I'm still able to enjoy it and the Tick Tock Diner.
Short Stop was a gem. It sat vacant for quite awhile and I got excited when I heard that they were opening it up again, but as Calico said, it turned into a Dunkin' Donuts. No more charm.
I'm so glad I grew up in the NY-NJ area and have diners in my blood! LOL!
