Taking Chance

I watched this movie last night and cried through the entire movie. There isn't much of a plot to speak of. For anyone who doesn't know the story, it is about a Marine (Kevin Bacon) who requests the honor of escorting a fallen fellow Marine home to be buried. The movie simply chronicals what the process is in getting him home. But the respect and reverence shown to both the deceased and Lieutenant Colonel Strobl (Kevin Bacon's character) is just so moving. From the military personel, to the private citizens he encountered on his journey, the emotion and respect they all displayed made me feel so proud. I think every American should see this movie.

We all know young men and women have lost their lives in this war, but this movie really made an impact on me, by showing how much of an impact the lost lives make on so many Americans, whether or not they knew them personally. If you get a chance, watch it, but have tissues handy, I have tears in my eyes as I type this.

I'm not sure how old it is, but I don't think it is very new. It was a made for HBO movie, but I rented it from Redbox. It is definitely worth watching.

It was released in Dec 09, so it's not too old. I am going to rent it this weekend unless one of you beat me to it. I am a big fan of Kevin Bacon's dramatic acting roles.

This is truly a special movie, and I have always felt that it is important for people to see it. In fact, I show it to my students each year at Memorial Day so that they can get a sense of the human side of the struggles that America has fought for our freedom.

We watched a show( think it was on PBS) a couple weeks ago and it was about a group of people (senior citizens) who meet military flights. I think it was filmed up in Maine?? These wonderful people go out in all hours of the day & night to meet returning military personnel and give them a welcome home. Made me wonder if there was any place nearby where someone could do this locally? I'd be happy to go and welcome these soldiers home whenever I could.

Amommy, I would be with you doing that. Our military people who are not lucky enough to come home to continue with their lives deserve to be shown our respect and gratitude.

Mom of 1 & 1 I think that is wonderful that you show this to your students. It shows them what the "ultimate sacrifice" means to so many Americans. If I were still teaching, it would be shown to my students.

Brotherdog,
Redbox is a new DVD rental service that lets you rent from a vending machine-type box at certain stores. I think I've seen them at WalMart and there's one at my old Shop Rite (Wharton), but not sure about others. I've never used the service myself, but my brother really likes it. You swipe your credit card and it's pretty inexpensive....I think maybe $1 per day.

Maybe it's not really a "new" service....I just have never used it!

I saw this when it was first on since the write-ups were so good. As a true story they certainly got the support of the author and he was more that pleased with the result. Bacon did an excellent job! This movie did a lot.
