Over 50 need help to lose weight
I need help. Im over 50 how cn I loose weight. i ride bike goe to the gym at least 2x week. Now Im in Physcle therapy for back.
If you're doing all that and still not losing weight, you're obviously eating too many calories.
Cut out sugary drinks and replace them with water. Replace snack chips with vegetables and reduce your processed carbohydrate intake (pasta, bread, white rice, etc.) That should be a good start, anyway.
Consume less calories and exercise more. Unless you have a medical condition, this is the only recipe for weight loss that works. Good luck.
Eat whole wheat bread for lunch. drink alot of water. I drink coffee 2-3 cups no sugar Iced tea arizonia stress tea. Try to eat more meat and veg. I dont fry food. No ff,s
Weight Watchers... I just joined and you can use facebook tools to help you out. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time in little tiny bags.... Intervals, intervals intervals.... run, jog fast, walk.... bike and anything on incline. Best of luck.
I agree with PepperCat. WW is the way to go. I do not attend meetings, nor do I do WW online, but there are enough resources out there to do it without actually being a member. There are a few WW groups on FaceBook, and they are full of very helpful people. I just passed the 5 month mark this weekend and am down 35lbs. If you follow their guidelines you WILL lose weight. If you stray from it, you are only cheating yourself. Oh, and it may be hard to believe, but I actually eat more food while doing this plan than I ever did before...Good Luck!
Riverat, hopefully you got my email, I'm not that computer literate, however, It's kinda funny, I posted a topic here this morning, I'm over 50 and overweight. I am in desperate need of losing atleast 80 pounds or more, and it seems that it has packed on more in the last year, please contact me and lets see if we can do this together. I'd love to have a partner who has the same goals as myself, and maybe even a new friend......
a positive attitude also helps...
Either you want to lose it or you don't. I'm starting to wonder...
Join a FaceBook WW page, plenty of 50+ women there...
Weight Watchers! I started in jan and have lost over 50 lbs...there are many women AND men in our meeting who are older. Go to the Thursday night meeting at Trinity Church at 5...Carmela is the leader and she's AWESOME!
chickynoonoo While I agree that it is harder now at 50 + I would never say its hopeless. I also need to lose weight. I have dieted in the past to lose 20 lbs or so but now it's more like 35 - gonna be tough because I am not giving up certain things but I will exercise more to be able to enjoy them! hahaha I quit smoking 18 months ago! Yeah me and for those of you that know me here Yes it has been 18 months. I could not be happier BUT I have gained weight and now it is time to focus on that. I have started at Riverside Gym and hope to stay motivated. It can be done. Stay focused.
Yes, the older you get the tougher it is. It's so much harder for me to lose a few pounds now that I'm over 40 than it was a few years ago. Weight Watchers (although I have never tried it) is supposed to be great. I know many people who have had success with them.
what I like about WW is that it's teaching me to eat healthier...so when I hit "goalville" I can maintain a healthy lifestyle easily!
Im not afraid of exercise. I did 15 miles on Sunday by bicycle. Have always been a rider. My friend I ride with went away during summer. I tryed to get other women interested. No luck. They dont know what there missing. Once a week im trying for. Must get back to gym. Ive been to physicle therapy. Still going for back problems. When done I will go to the gym. Been there 16 or 17 years. So Im not lazy. I need help with diet. I dont have as much time as i used to I babysit my grand children when My daughter needs it.
chichnoono I dont live in Hackettstown. I work here. Right now I have Physicle therapy. I dont get home till 630
WW is very good - has helped me learn to eat better - I thought I was eating right! It was a struggle at first, but after a few weeks it gets better and you do see results.
I did not want to lose much weight, so am happy with where I am at now and it will be easy to maintain.
riverrat, I don't live in Hackettstown either, I work here as well but live not too far away. I guess I'm gonna have to go it alone, I was hoping to find a work out partner as well as some time for myself away from home. Best of luck to you.
chickynoon maybe we could walk after work. I work at allemuchy corprate. Im still going to therapy so it makes exercising hard after that. but it will be over soon. Maybe then???
You're taking in TOO MANY CALORIES.
Think about this. If your body needs xxx amount of calories a day, and you've added just a simple yogurt to your diet...that's 100 extra calories at day.
Doesn't seem like much, but 100 calories more a day equals about 3000 extra calories a month - or about 1 pound weight gain. Which amounts to 12 pounds in one year!
Crazy as it sounds, but yes eating just a measly extra 100 calories a day more than your body needs will help you GAIN 12 pounds in a year!
And as you age - you don't need me to tell you that your metabolism just ain't what it used to be. Exercising is wonderful...but if you take in more calories than you need, forget it, you're shoveling against the tide.
And as you age, you do need to exercise - PATIENCE that is. It could take quite a while before the weight starts noticeably coming off. And a common set-back is many times people erroneously think that when they exercise, they can justify eating more. FALSE. You still need to cut your calorie intake. PERIOD. However, if you cut your calories by only 100 calories a day, you're looking at losing just 1 pound a month.
The fact is, gaining weight takes just as long as losing weight, but it does seem so much easier to gain weight, huh? I mean eating a nice big piece of chocolate cake is EASY...but the willpower NOT to eat it...well, it's a mindset that has to be worked on. There is no miracle "cure". But it can be done.
I'd love to, I work in Budd Lake, live east of here, and usually don't get done with family things til around 7, so we can maybe try something when you're ready. I'm open to any help.
eat less, work out more,
write own every you eat in journal, do this for two weeks, don't freak out when you review this, just get angry enough to commit to working out more often for longer periods of time, and eating less and less.
in the morning do you have two eges and two slices of toast? just have one egg and one slice of toast. then get up from the table and get involved in something else.
keep trying, every day, and it is *NEVER* hopeless, thinking that way is a just a cop out on not comitting to doing what needs doing to lose the weight.
good luck to you and keep on truckin'
please post back with your progress and your questions.
My diet is so messed up. I will keep a journel. I dont eat sweets very often. No cookies no cake I seem to not have a disire for them. I have 1/2 bagel in morning then at 8:30
I have a snack with coffee. snack is Quaker true delites. I thought oat meal is good. 11:30 yogurt. Lunch small amounts of food. Iced Tea Stress tea or water. supper meat and veg. sometimes 1/2 potatoe. Nothing after Supper Water with supper
riverrat -
good info and keep posting particulars as it will help you focus on what your are eating.
questions:
how many carb calories are in that Quaker Ture delights at 8:30? how many fat calories?
what do you out on your bagle?
if you have yogurt at 11:30 what time is your lunch and what is it you are eating for lunch?
how much sugar is in your stress ice tea?
more details about supper, what kind of meat and how much is on the plate?
what do you put on your potatoe? butter? margerine? (stat using a non-fat vinigrete type of salad dressing on that half potatoe.
try and ride your bike at *LEAST* three times per week, and on the off days start with calistenics at home. sit ups/crunches, push ups (even the girl kind to start, you know the ones where you leave your knees on the floor). and learn how to do tricep dips with a couple of kichen chairs. if you wnt deatails , just ask and i will post them.
do you have any weights at home? you can get a 40lb dumbell set at the walmart pretty cheap. get one and start doing bicep curls and shoulder presses with them. again let me know if you want details on how to do these and i will post back for you.
do *NOT* put any butter or margerine on your vegtables at dinner, get used to eating them witout the added fat, added fat is bad as you probably know, but if you don't, I for one will beat you over the head with it. ADDED FAT IS NOT GOOD FOR YOU SO CUT IT OUT WHEN AND WHERE YOU FIND IT.
keep trying every day but don't beat yourself up to badly. even small changes done consistently will make a huge difference in your outlook and your self confidence.
Brotherdog, there is some benefit to adding GOOD fats to your diet. I agree that trans fats and most saturated fats should be eliminated or reduced and dairy products should not be eaten in the full-fat varieties. However, good fats found in things like olive oil, nuts, avocado and fish are all very healthy and should be consumed in limited quantities with every meal. They help to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates as well.
brotherdog, thanks for advise. I have been lifting weights for at least 16 or 14 years at Gibsons Gym. I love weights I was doing leg press's 200lbs. I lighted up I have back trouble I am going to Physicle Therapy. Been 6 weks now. Im trying to go 2x biking but very hard. I have family, limited time as I work. but I like to exercise. Just have to get diet right. It is so hard. Age against me But I will not give up. Thanks I need someone to talk to about this. I need to lose 25 lbs.
i put butter lightly on Bagel. carbs on Quaker Delights 19g. have to check on tea. when i have coffe no sugar just milk
You're probably a lot better off putting some butter on the broccoli and skipping the potato altogether... especially as you get older, I think you are more prone to blood sugar fluctuations that trigger fat storage and are probably far better served by a low carb lifestyle than a low fat one.
ian is right as rain ,
potatoes at dinner should be avoided due to the insulin spike from the simple carbs, unused sugar running through the blood will be stored as fat and that is what riverrat needs to avoid right now. so substituting a vegetable for the potato is smart thinking
and Tracy is right , we all need fats in our diets; can't live without them, the omega3 fats from fish is good, and peanut oil is also good. i was trying mostly to talk about the use of butter and margarine, leave that stuff in the fridge at mealtimes.
I will not have potatoes veg yes no butter no rolls bread Oh for lunch I had chicken salad on whole wheat and tomato salad. So I ate only i slice with tomatoe and the chicken salad. I would have like plain chicken but had to order out. I dont like mayo but I like chicken salad.
get the low fat mayo and/or salad dressing. there are also non-fat versions of these items out now.
i like chicken salad also, but it does pack on the fat calories.
the whole wheat is a good choice, keep it up! low glycemic foods are what you want.
Don't eat anything white. Bagels, breads, sugars, potatoes, yogurt and dairy, rice... all out. Get a juicer and juice all the vegetables and fruits you can stand. Concentrate on eating healthier and not so much dieting to lose weight. The weight will start to come off as a by-product.
RJ Thanks a juicer is great but I dont have room or the time to shop for all the veg. do they make a samll juicer for One person?
I had a birthday weekend that means icecream cake. Seemed rude not to have a small piece. It was just my sons birthday. Life makes it hard to diet. My food portions are small tho.
riverrat -
you can have one cheat day each and every week! so celebrate the birthday's with ice cream. just adjust something else the day after. in total over the two days you can balance out your dietary goals, no problem.
when asked about eating a quarter pounder with cheese at the McDonald's, Arnold Schwarzenegger said you can eat what ever you want, but the next day you better have a salad. (he has won the Mr. Olympia more times than anyone else in history, so he knows how to diet)
I recently found that keeping my scale next to the refrigerator, rather than in the bathroom, as we typically do, works like a charm!!
I think one of the best things you can do is plan plan plan. Always have healthy food available. Ask yourself, why did you HAVE to order food? Because you didn't have anything pre-made. Trust me, a little extra work at home goes a long way. And you'll know exactly what is going into your food, as you are the one preparing it. Have fruits & veggies handy for snacks. Chicken, eggs, cheese for protein, etc. I pack my lunch every day. And I know it will sound crazy to some people, but I keep a cooler of food in the car when we go out for the day, so if I don't have time to stop, or I can't find healthy choices, I have something to fall back on. You have gotten some good advice on here, now you just have to use it :)
I can see some items in your average diet that are probably holding onto some hidden calories and fat that you are not aware of.
2 choices mentioned here will help you uncover those items to cut out the extra couple hundred calories a day that you need to start the scale moving lower again.
You need to create a full food diary. Then look up or use an online tool to help you identify the true calories in the foods you are eating. During this time, you MUST measure the food you are eating (scale or measuring cups) to be accurate in your diary.
There are two ways of showing the amount of food you are eating - use WW (online tools will work if you don't want to go to the meetings) and their points values or Sparkpeople.com for a free option.
Both are excellent options to uncover where you can make some changes in your diet to support the weight loss.
Just a couple of items I noticed -1/2 bagel with butter for breakfast - most store bought bagels are low in fiber and higher in calories than you need in the morning. That combined with the butter.. there are better choices. Since you are snacking with a true delights bar and yogurt before lunch, that is indicating that the 1/2 bagel is not filling you up. Try changing the breakfast to include some protein and you may find that you do not need the extra morning snacks. On WW, your breakfast is probably about 5 points (not including the coffee). For that same 5 points, you could be having egg beaters with light cheese, light english muffin and fruit. Put a little I Can't Belive its butter spray on the muffin and you will not need the extra butter. This is a much larger and more filling breakfast for the same calories.
Lunch - Chicken Salad - unless you are preparing the chicken salad at home with no fat or light mayo - this is not the best choice. In fact most deli prepared salads are the worst choice for lunch. You could be having a roast beef and cheddar sandwich for less calories. If you love chicken salad, make it at home or switch to grilled chicken with some honey mustard sandwich. Then you could have a cup or veggie soup (progresso makes some good varieties - check lables for calories and sodium) and be fully satisfied for the afternoon.
Your dinner, in general sounds great - maybe just do fish a couple of days a week for a change up and watch the added butters or oils.
Use the tools out there to uncover the hidden fat and calories in the foods you are choosing. You will be very surprised on hoe just a couple of small changes may be all you need.
Good luck.
Buying vegetables takes no more time than buying bagels. How can you not have time? You go to the grocery store anyway don't you? A juicer takes up no more room than a toaster and since you won't be toasting bread or bagels anymore, simply switch the toaster for the juicer. Of course, it all comes down to how serious you are. Commitment will allow you to find the time and room if it is important enough.
Once you start eating good natural things, your metabolism will transform from one that is used to storing calories to one that will be burning calories and using them efficiently. Then on those special occasions you can have all the ice cream cake you want, or stuff yourself on Thanksgiving and not have to worry about it because your body will be in "burn" mode and you won't gain a thing.

you and i are on the same page, it's like i know you or something. bring your food with you, you save money and eat healthier.
use the coolers. i got them in small medium and large sizes, so i can always pack my own lunch and snacks.
and i always bring a coffee thermos with me, saves all of that wawa , quick check, or dunkin donuts money. and it's my own strong brew, (i am such a coffee snob at this point that the stoer bought stuff seems weak and watery no matter where i get it from) it's gotta be hundreds of dollars saved each year for sure.
BrotherDog,
I look forward to finally meeting you this upcoming soccer season. I'll be the one with the cooler, flaunting her new figure, haha
Its not the time its the room in frig. I Do eat veg and fruit everyday. I cut the yogurt out. You ar e right. the babel is not enough. but I Though small is good. Going on7 weeks. I going back to the gym Ive been with when Im done with this I usually goe 2x week try to go biking or watersking or tubing (using a lot of arm strength). So Im not lazy Poor choices in food. Tho I was at a party and ate 2tbs of psalad mac sald and samll amount of sausage no bread. Its a struggle. I will keep trying. Thanks for the ideas. I need them. Cheese you take with you. What kind and how much. Card size.

keep at it. yes, when we are busy it's hard to remeber to think of making all the perfect choices. it's all ok though, as long as your trying, in time you will get better at thsi and you get more consistent with it.
keep trying, and don't beat yourself up unduly. you are making positve changes in your lifestyle choices, this will add years to your life and make you feel better at the same time.
keep at it!
I took my Iced Tea Stress Tea 16 g sugar made a 50-50 water. But I think I will add more water as the sugar content is something i MUST WATCH.
right; that's why i asked you about it, they have a zero calorie version of the same ice tea on the shelf, look for it next time you are going to buy it. saw these at the shoprite for 1 dollar for the 42 ounce size, pretty good deal if you ask me
also that 16 grams of sugar was for one serving, so how many servings are in the bottle?
2 or 3? that would make 32 or 48 grams of sugrar in the whole darn thing! wow! that's a sweet tooth for sure man. (and too much sugar for snack time)
I take iced tea at lunch. 42 fl.oz. Yes it is alot of sugar Never noticed before. I will add water to the remaining And I will look for the herbal arizona stress tea with oout sugar. Thanks
good !
knowledge is power, and now that you have the power you can weild it!
42 oz / 8 oz serving = 5.25 servings in the bottle.
5.25 servings * 16 grams of sugar per serving = 84 grams of sugar in the bottle.
and form this web site:
http://www.weightlossforall.com/how-many-calories-in-food.htm
there are 4 calories in each gram of sugar so then:
84 grams of sugar * 4 calories per gram of sugar = 336 calories in the bottle.
yeppir, switch to the zero calories version of the same ice tea. $1 dollar american at the mansfield shoprite.
