Anyone use Fit Happens in Allamuchy?
Thinking of joining....has anyone had experience going there? I know I've read the threads in the past on Gold's and people trying to cancel wiith problems...and Achieve is too much like a basement and had young guys throwing around curse words the few times I was there. How about Fit Happens? It looks really nice in there and they have a lot of classes, etc.
I am going to try Gibson's in Washington. I was just sent a 14 day free membership. I need something
I used Fit Happens about 10 years ago. Don't know what it's like now but it was great then! Gibson's in Washington was really nice too. When I joined, my daughter was 2 years old and absolutely refused to stay in the nursery, meaning I could never work out. They refunded my membership in full after two weeks, even though I had used the gym a couple of times. I thought that was so nice. I know people who use both gyms and they love them.
Fit happens is a very boring gym its like being in a library and to top it off they are $88 a month !
Gee, the girl teaching aerobics was advertising on WRNJ that she ran "Lord based fitness classes". Not the place for me!
I've been going to fit Happens for 6 years as a pay as you work out person (during the week I can use my gym at work....so doesnt make sense for me to join a gym).......and I've been very happy. They have great equipment and its well maintained. They offer a ton of different types of classes (even though I'm too lazy to go to many!). Its privately owned and the owner is very nice and in great shape. I would reco trying a free trial to see how you like it.
I go to Riverside Health and Fitness. The place is awesome. They are also expanding and adding new equipment.
Why not come in and give us a try? We do offer one week trial, have almost 40 group exercise classes each week (only two are faith-based and are not offered through F.H.), all the equipment you need and don't charge anywhere near 88.00. Come in and see for yourself -
Jon what is your monthly rate then because i personally know 2 people who go to your gym and said they pay $88 a month
Fever for more cowbell- I was a member there and I have to say: 1. the equipment is well maintained 2. the place is not busy (so you can go from machine to machine with no wait) 3. the trainers are helpful (gotta pay for a trainer, but worth it to learn the machines and what exercises you should focus on to obtain your goal - I had an older gentleman and I was VERY happy with his expertise and jovial personality). 4. Great optional aerobic programs you can join through-out the week at an additional cost. 5. The normal crowd is in their 30's to 50's, no "Situation" Jersey Shore types.
If you are going there to be social-NO!!!! Members are friendly, don't get me wrong, but they are there for one reason (as it should probably be)- they are pleasant though. :-) Don't expect to bullshit for too long with others.
If you are going there to seriously get yourself in shape-YES. Great gym without the social dynamic BS. Me? I failed. I hate working out, so I just sucked at the whole thing to begin with.
My only problem with Fit Happens was I had to sign a year contract- I paid for many months while I sat on my ass eating chips and dip watching Family Guy re-runs at home. That's my fault, not Fit Happens fault. If you get a scheduled trainer, you are more apt to show up. :-) If you think you are THAT committed to sign a year contract, KUDOS to you! That policy may have changed. I would also see if you could get a free 2 hour session with a trainer upon signing your contract so you know how to use the equipment to your advantage.
In summary, I would highly recommend the place. Hell, I might try it again if I can join monthly. :-) My laziness runs in spurts. Right now I'm feeling lazy...... shocker.
Reggie, I did go there and they have pay as you go, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month and then of course the Holy Crap I Must Really Be Serious package. I liked that there were options.
Very clean. A lot of room and options and nice equipment. I know what you mean about the social part, but in all honesty, I want to go and work out and not feel like it's a place to be 'on' and such. Since right now, my work out plan is the same as your's...Family Guy and a snack. LOL. Last year I was doing really well, but then I think once you stop for a day, it turns into weeks, and then months.
I checked out other gyms online or ones I've gone to. Now, I'm just more confused. But I think they are right about 88 a month, since it was 249 for 3 months, but on special for 193. I know the atmosphere was more subdued and not like 'who's here? who's here?' like at Gold's. I don't want to be distracted. I want to work out and hope that in the meantime, corduroy doesn't make a comeback because my thighs are touching and I would start a fire with them rubbing...and then ya know....Pants on the Ground, Pants on the Ground.............Oh, no...I put the song in your head again!
Planet Fitness in Roxbury is having a special ONE dollar to join and 10 dollars a month NO contracts. Quit when you want. It is no frills but it is a gym! Plenty of equipment.
Reggie, Thanks for the great review. We are aware that our biggest competition is your couch at home. Maybe there is something we can do to inspire you to go out the door and work out. (We will do our best to get Stewie and company on the TVs here. Call it a compromise.) Orientations on the equipment with a trainer are complimentary.
I Need More Cowbell,
Thank you too for your great review and for being up to date on our specials. Without sounding too much like an ad, we have many membership options that are more economical than the pay one month at a time program that IJM's friends chose. They do come with a commitment but, like so many other good things in life, so does fitness. Hope this helps.
this thread has been funny as I too used to be in really great shape (before my almost 4yr old was born) and now the couch seems to call me louder than the gym does. I''m glad to hear I'm not the only one who struggles with this!
Whoever is looking to join a gym should shop around at the local places to see what they like best...........used to be that gyms offer a free week or 2 trial for people (at the very least a day) to check it out.
Well, I've looked at everything from Achieve (too many muscle heads and yelling out the F word like it was an all guys' locker room each time I went for trial). I don't mean they were yelling French Fries, either.
Gold's....I know too many people that go there and I can see it as a major distraction for being serious and getting things done...and I don't like what I've heard about their iron clad agreements. I don't wanna have to be rolled in in my coffin just to get them to cancel a membership.
Love the idea of Planet Fitness, bright, no frills, no contracts, cheap....but it's in Roxbury and I know I won't wanna go straight from work, and I can hear my excuses already for driving there and getting out of that mall. Plus, ya know, if I get TOO hot, they might ask me to dance at Smiles II on the way home. (cough...yeah)
Curves...did that once when it was in Htown and found that women were yelling across talking about their husbands and kids, etc....I just didn't want to have to hear other women's lives forced down my throat. I wanted to hear the music.
Riverside, just don't like the layout...plus, ya know, the ice cream place is right on the way on the highway...
Jon, I will say that when I stopped in, the girl was on her first day there working and she couldn't have been more nice or more helpful. I couldn't believe it was her first day. She left a very good impression with me and I did like the layout, cleanness and tons of equipment and classes....plus I don't have to drive more than 2 mins since it's right out the back gate. So.........the winner is.............
Oh, come on, Reggie and Firefly....join with me!!! I'm going to join for 3 months and see how it goes, but they do have 1, 3 and 6 or pay as you go.......
That's GREAT Cowbell, Come say hi when you come in. I'll play the opening notes from The Stones' "Honky Tonk Woman" 'til you have enough...
It's 88.81 including tax if you choose to pay month - to - month. The rates go down from there.
I have been going to Fit Happens for almost 10 years and love it. It is clean, friendly and lots of classes offered. It is not "jersey shore" or a "meat market". Wide variety of ages there and all interact.
I had a friend who signed up for Golds because they had big tv's - heck I have a big TV I can watch at home. I went to Riverside a couple of years ago just to see what they had to offer and NOBODY ever came to the reception desk. I went into Golds also and didn't like the atmosphere and it is too far from my house, as is Riverside.
Teresa (lady at desk) is fantastic at Fit Happens, very friendly, makes you feel right at home. If FH ever closed, I have no idea where I would go.
Jon, do you have a whip? lol, Sorry I just hate working out. Give me your motivational speech. I've been dieting and lost 13 lbs. I have reached my plateau. Convince me! I need convincing and someone to babysit me to make sure I go. 88 bucks is quite a bit if I'm not feeling it. How about an incentive? For instance, if I show up 3 days a week, every week for a month, do I get a discount on my membership for the next month or a discount to one of your aerobic classes. I need an incentive or a push! Help me to help you to help me. lol
Just Asking, It should be in that ball park, yea....because the sheet I have says 249 for 3 months, but special for 193. Wouldn't you know it, I get a mailing from Achieve today for a founding member sale and 99 a year. Part of me likes that....but I honestly don't like that gym. It's like in a basement and wide open and not all nice and lovely and clean and separate areas and nice person in front like Fit Happens. But, the cheap part of me like the 99 bucks for a whole year. I need to join ONE by the end of the week. I gave myself a goal!
There was a whole blog about Achieve fitness, most of it not good. I have not been there but think it would appeal more to college kids maybe.
Fit Happens rocks !
Reggie, A whip? What kind of gym are you looking for??? But seriously, we can inspire you to keep up with your workout regimen, we can offer you programs that will keep the interest and "change things up". Without these things the journey is a lot tougher. We encourage everyone to become as integrated into the club as they want to. Some socialization really helps. Bottom line is the motivation has to come from you. But ask yourself "where am I most likely to attend regularly and achieve my goals? Is it where I'm paying the least or where I enjoy it the most?" That's what really matters. That will make up your mind. Come see me, I've got a lot more benefits to discuss but am a REALLY slow typist.
INMCB, It seems like you and Reggie have similar concerns.(just like most folks looking for a gym) A lot of your concerns can hopefully be addressed in my post to Reggie. We are obviously not a $99/yr gym. That's cool. Again, choose the place you feel that you will truly be most comfortable. That's the place that is most likely to show you the most success. The place you'll stick with. I'd be glad to meet with you any time if I can be more help.
I really appreciate Jon's responses here -- the bottom line is that you should find something that motivates you and stick with it. That said, I know the owner of Fit Happens, and I truly believe she and her staff run a quality operation. Because they're a little more convenient for us, my husband has worked out at both Riverside and Achieve, and he has had good experiences at both. The gym environment is one that not everyone likes, though.
If you don't like gyms, and/or if you prefer women-only, and/or if you like to dance, I would like to suggest Jazzercise or Zumba. Jazzercise incorporates cardio, strength work, and stretching, and Zumba offers excellent cardio, too. Contact information for these and other area fitness options are listed in the Businesses section of this forum.
Good luck INMCB and Reggie -- and everyone! Just get moving, no matter what it is. Nothing on TV is worth trading off your long-term health! Seriously. Find something you like and do it.
don't charge anywhere near 88.00. Come in and see for yourself -
Jon

Thanks for the conflicting information -
IJM,
What's your deal? From the "boring" comment to the "conflicting info" comment (which Jon has explained) you seem like you're out to get this place...
Not at all, but when i stated it was $88 he was quick to say there rates are no where near that and them later retracted. Its a beautiful gym with great equipment just not my scene def. not out to get them.
INCMB that $99 for achieve also comes with a 2 year contract and a sign up fee unless they changed it

Katy, IJM or Shoebie..... you decide. see attached photo. How many personalities do you have, Sybil?
Well, things have gotten VERY interesting in this thread. Reggie hits another homer
I say go to whatever gym you want to go to. I go to achieve fitness, and why because it is my kind of gym. I don't need friggan fountains in the lobby, or a bunch of trainers walking around, or yuppies on the treadmills lol. I like the raw basement gym, where people go to get things done I don't want some sales person trying to sell me more crap while I am in the gym. We are there with one sole purpose, and that is to get in better shape. I don't need all the bells and whistles. For the money achieve is a great place, and they are starting to slowly upgrade their equipment. Hey I am not saying that achieve is the place for everybody, but I do have to say the people that go there are nice, and are always up for helping out if you have a question.
Firefly, I like dueling banjos. :-)
I can understand an opinion here and there, but when an opinion is "fake" about a very proper establishment someone has not COME CLOSE TO experiencing, I have a problem. My monthly rate at Fit Happens was 61 bucks and some change a month. Due to my yearly contract, as Jon specified... He stated the "rates go down from here"-- they do! Depending on your package. NO MIXED MESSAGES! month to month- higher prices. As it would be with ANY given company in ANY market. Of course they are providing a service, but keep in mind, they need to profit from their service. Otherwise, there would be NO service to begin with. Fit Happens provides a fantastic service. Unfortunately, I am too lazy, but I can at least admit my short comings.
As for my "calling out" IJM, Katy, Shoobie being the same person. It was very immature of me, but yet...... if the shoe fits...... Hey, it is what it is. Just be forthright is all I ask. I go by the saying if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all. But if you have something to say, then say it! No need to hide, honesty is a wonderful and respectable attribute. I respect someone's honest opinion rather than a random "anonymous" opinion anytime! Just be up front.
I would love to say more, but Christine is in my head saying delete, delete, delete.
I miss ianimal- he may be profound, but he is VERY realistic and ALWAYS has a great point..... posed in a very humorous manner. I, of course, blame Sybil for his absence. Thanks, Sybil.
I want ianimal back. He provoked thought and meaningful conversation. Debating the issues. I could care less about debating Applebee's menu.....
Reggie - I don't think Sybil has anything to do with ianimal's absence. I think he just has a lot of other things going on in his life and he's choosing to spend his time doing those things. Many other posters to this forum have done the same thing. He'll be back. In the meantime you are welcome to initiate your own meaningful dialogues. :):)
Didn't ianimal move? I don't think it's any more than that.
PS. Did I really see BLD refer to someone else as Sybil? Just checking. ;-)
meaningful debate is important,
if done in a hunorus way it is more entertaining,
i kinda miss that stewie gravatar myself.
for the record, in my life, 88 dollars per month is real expensive to get a workout done.
i can get in shape around my own house for nothing. i can also get in good running shape by refereeing soccer matches, and they pay me money to do it! (i need that xtra cash for my tax increase this year)
i know folks who go to riverside and love it , but i don't know how much that costs.
also mow the whole yard with the little push mower instead of the ride on mower. use less gas and gets me trimmer. i got weights in the basement and a ton of firewood to split, so i am i great shape for $0 / month.
for apt dwellers, i recommend a 19 dollar 'Gold's gym' chin up bar for the doorway. this will get you in good shape, do push ups one day, pull ups the next day, sit ups the third day, then run a couple miles around the neighborhood the fourth day. you will get in great shape and save a ton of dough
i kinda like sybill so the rest of youse just ease off on her (or them), ok?
It's always the seemingly innocent topics that go way off course. Yikes.
I agree with bits and pieces of a few people. I don't agree on Achieve. It's like a bargain basement gym...or more like a big locker room feel to me. I had gone a few times and thee were young muscle head types swearing up a storm and yelling across each time I went. The guy at the front desk wasn't knowledgable in prices to boot.
Just because a gym is set up nicer and cleaner, etc, doesn't mean it's for yuppies (didn't know that term still floats around) or a sales person follows you. In all honesty, I liked that they have membership for 25 and over at Fit Happens, because it would eliminate the guys I encountered acting like there were in a high school gym and not a public place with women around...and there were some small children with moms. I'm no prude, but if the employees just put up with the crap I saw/heard 3 times on a trial, then, nah....
Whoever said go where you're comfortable and you'll go...that's the truth. Whether it's the location or whatever, you'll have more success if you like attending. Fit Happens was spotless and the girl was friendly, etc. Will I pay more? Yes, but it's for all that, the different rooms, classes available if I want, and location, location, location.
Cowbell,
I said to go wherever you want. To me that's why there is more then one gym, it creates a choice for people. One gym is not better than another if it suits a persons needs. I also used the word "yuppie" haha. I am bringing the 80's back with that one!! Didn't know what else to call the business type people who come in with the attittude that they are great and constantly walk around like they are propped up from the backside by a large pole!!! hehe. Anyway, I was just saying me personally cannot justify paying 50 dollars+ a month for a gym, when A. I won't use any of the classes they offer B. I don't need any fufu kind of crap. and C. I just need the equipment that will get the job done. So that is why I chose Achieve. It's just my kinda place. I like a place I can go sweat out and work hard without hearing all the latest gossip from all of the people that go for socialization purposes. Don't get me wrong, we talk at my gym, but we talk shop. Helping each other find ways to do new workouts and get in better shape. Call me a meathead if you will but I love my gym!!!
Sorry have not been on in a few, Reggie i am not IJM it is my sister who occasionally pops on the forum while she is babysitting for me this is the first i am seeing this thread as she just told me to come look at this, she created her gravatar with an icon that was saved on my computer that i told her she could use because i have not used it in forever, I was not aware that you kept a log of icons from last year or i would have told her to find her own. I have never even been inside fit happens therefore would have no opinion on it not to mention i would be the last person to give an opinion on a gym right now i have not stepped foot in mine in months sorry for the confusion and i am sure most of you know that i am straight forward if i had an opinion on something i am not afraid to post it under my own name and argue my point for 200 some odd posts and when i changed to shoebie i did not do it secretly i let everyone know that i was changing so its not like im hiding behind multiple screen names ta ta for now
no I haven't. I have been a member at Riverside Health and Fitness Center for almost 18 years. The memberships are simple, no confusing contracts, no pressure. The classes and instructors are awesome. They have all the equipment you would ever need. They are alwasy expanding and will soon offer 2 floors with 2 cardiovascular areas. Zumba, Yoga and cycling classes are all part of the membership for around $40 a month. What I like most is it isn't a chain. You can ask to make improvements and they are eager to help. A great group of people and have recently added a childrens gym which many a lot of members are using.
Try Gibsons gym. Ive been there 17 years. Very nice people. The price is extremely fair. If you need to freeze memebership they will. Always helpful. Clean plenty of classes. Plenty of room. Always changing things too. Child care very reasonable. Plenty of machines and free weights. Some times busy with after work people but there are other times not. No problems for women there. Check out there website. Great place
