No ipod while running.
I am constantly arguing with my daughter about running with her ipod. She insists she will hear cars coming. I think this article proves my point. There was a young man hit and killed by a plane while running on the beach. He never heard it, he was listening to his ipod. So sad. Just wanted to share in case anyone else has this same issue.

I am not a fan of distractions when i run on the road so yeah it always seemed kind of dangerous to me too.
Thats sad a friend of mine runs with her i pod on i am going to email her this article thanks for sharing.
I agree, but from what was written in the article, he may not have heard the plane even if he wasn't listening to his ipod. Sad story.
When I run on the road, I don't have the volume too high so I can hear the cars passing. I also don't use the noise cancellation headphones. You can't hear a thing with those on.
Aren't joggers supposed to run opposite of traffic so that they can SEE the cars coming?
Yes Tracy, walkers/joggers/runners are suppose to go against traffic and cyclists go with the traffic. Yet many people don't seem to know this.
Yes, supposed to run against traffic.
Would be nice to hears cars from behind you who may turn across your path.
Gotta watch out for the ultra quiet hybrids too, when they switch to electric they're *really* quiet.
Just go running w/ your daughter. See how things go.
Sad and very dangerous. I almost hit a kid walking across the street. I was coming around a blind corner it was around the same time school was letting out. I know this corner so I was going the 15 mph around it. The boy (HS kid) must have gotten off the bus, his hood on his jacket was up, listening to his ipod, and looking the other way. I slammed on my brakes, beeping my horn. He was on arm length away by the time I was able to stop my vehicle. He never noticed me until he was past my vehicle and turned his head in my direction. He looked at me like to say what the F#%* lady. I reported it to the local school, hoping they would bring it to the attention of the students the dangers of ipods and walking in the street. That kid is lucky to be alive, and so am I.
I don't think this guy was expecting too much traffic on the beach and even without the music playing, it does not sound like he would have heard it coming. I am thinking about how naturally noisy the edge of the ocean generally is with the waves.
This is just an example of when there isn't much you can do when it is your time. The sad part is that his 3 year old's birthday was today. This is really sad..
Why would one have to listen out for Planes while jogging? ipod was not the problem, its like Coralie said: there isn't much you can do when it is your time.
I'm a firm believer in when it's your time it's your time, but like Coralie said, I don't think this guy was expecting traffic on the beach, or anything falling from the sky for that matter. Very sad either way...
Ok so I get the concern about the Ipod while running. I keep mine very low, just enough to hear some music but thats it. On the treadmill on the otherhand its up loud.
But with that said, I really don't know that the Ipod was a factor for this poor guy. It was just his time. Quoting the former NTSB inspector in article....
""There's no noise," said aviation expert Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general for the National Transportation Safety Board. "So the jogger, with his ear buds in, and the plane without an engine, you're basically a stealth aircraft. Who would expect to look up?""
Also name the number of times someone gets hit by a plane, ipod or no ipod? Unless you are standing on the tarmac, the chances are VERY slim. This story is a bad example of the dangers of jogging with ipod volume turned up loud.
Think about all the forces in the universe that needed to be aligned for that plane to be exactly at the same spot as the runner......what if he had left the house 5 minutes earlier...later....not gone running? Bent over to tie his shoelaces, stopped to look at the ocean.....? Maybe it is better he did not hear anything....he probably died with a happy heart. It is a very sad situation.....my heart goes out to his family.
You always look up while at the beach. Those darn birds like to dive bomb everyone. LOL. Just like in the old car commercial with the New Black car.
I would imagine he was trying to be safe by running on the beach instead of the road...who knew? Interestingly, I just sent the article to my brother and it turns he knows the guy through the online poker site he and his girlfriend run. Strange...
