Tomato planters from kitty litter tubs
Old topic couldn't be posted in so starting a new one:
Thinking about using the giant tubs from kitty litter for making the planters that hang. I think someone had the "instructions" for such a thing. Would greatly appreciate it. To make Mr. Blackcat happy, I am going to paint the outsides so we don't see kitty litter buckets hanging about the yard.....
I think you're going to have a hard time getting paint to adhere to those tubs without peeling and flaking. Scuff them up really well with sand paper and use spray enamel; that will probably be your best bet, but I still wouldn't put money on it.
There's a spray paint specifically for plastics. I've used it and it works. Just don't need to see "Tidy Cat" screaming from a yellow container:)
Thanks for the link! Since these buckets aren't recyclable, I needed to find a good use for them. Plus last year's crop of tomatoes got that black rot stuff and not sure if the soil is affected. An added bonus is I can keep them out of the reach of my little guy and just wrap some netting to keep other invaders out...I hope.
I recycle kitty litter tubs. I use them for different types of bird seed, dog food, salt crystals. I also lay several down, side by side with the lids removed. I use them like cubbies to store old shoes, boots, plastic & brown bags, magazines for recycling, etc.
I believe the spray paint for plastic is called Fusion. They used to sell it at Michaels.
Yep- Fusion. Now they have some nice colors too. Most paint places have it also. Just cleared out where the daffodils are coming up. I missed the smell of dirt:)

Lori - Rednecks wouldn't use something as classy as a cat litter pail for a planter.
They'd have something more like this >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Well, I will admit that we have an old washing machine and kitchen sink under the covered part of the garage....at least its not on cinder blocks:) When I told my husband of my plan for the kitty litter tubs his frist thought was that it was going to look hick-ish:) Then I told him I'd paint them....
